now, to a developing story. a brooklyn street is cracked and buckled, after a sinkhole opens up. cbs 2 emily smith is live in sunset park with more on how this is impacting the neighborhood. emily? >> reporter: good evening, maurice. look over my shoulder, you can see the sinkhole. it is about 20 feet long. and seven feet wide. >> this chopper 2 video shows a large sinkhole on 56th street and sunset park, in the center of a busy residential street. those who live here have access to their homes and still have water and electricity. but gas had been shut off to a few buildings, maria rodriguez says it caved right after a garbage truck drove by. >> the garbage truck came first. and that is heavy. that's when it started sinking more and more. >> reporter: there are no injuries reported. but neighbors say it is out of this world to see something like this on their street. >> reporter: getting my lunch, >> and what do you think? >> amazing. unreal. what is happening? like i say, the big one on fifth avenue, six, eight months ago was something, and now this. and in other headline, it did super tuesday, the busiest campaign day of 2016, a quarter of americans will have their say today. democrat hillary clinton and republican donald trump see an opportunity to pull away from their rivals. marcia kramer has the latest. >> reporter: using his private plane as a backdrop, donald trump was independent on putting on one really huge show, as voters went to the polls in 11 states on super tuesday. trump intent on showing brash confidence by moving ton battle ground state ohio, whose voters go to the polls in two weeks. he came with new jersey governor chris christie, the warmup act, to attack senators marco rubio and ted cruz. >> senator rubio is on the air desperate. senator cruz is on the air. washington, d.c. in the oval office, do we? >> with the new cnn poll showing trump dominating his rivals with 49% of the republican primary voters nationally, rubio and cruz are desperate to stop the trump juggernaut. >> i believe it would be an enormous mistake to nominate donald trump. >> i know is we will get a lot of delegates tonight. >> reporter: rubio and trump continue to tangle over the florida senator's decision to question trump's manhood. >> have you seen his hands? they are like this. and you know what they say about men with small hands. >> today, trump finally responded. >> he said i had small hands. actually i'm 6'3", not 6'2" and he said i have small hands. they are not small, are they? i never heard that one before. he has said, donald, you have the most beautiful hands. he wanted to be don rickles and it went down. klan member, hillary clinton says donald trump has not talked about it immediately. >> if there is a large voter turnout today, of across this country, we are going to do well. if not, we are probably going to be struggling. but i hope that there will be millions of people coming out and participating in what i call the political revolution. >> reporter: well, even if the polls are right, and donald trump and hillary clinton prevail today, it is not the end of the story. trump still has to win over the g.o.p. establishment. and associated press poll of republican senators and governors show that just under half won't mitt to backing him if he gets the nomination. -- won't commit to backing him if he gets the nomination. and it looks like hillary clinton will have to face off with bernie sanders for the entire primary season. he raised $41 million last month. enough to campaign to the very end. so we will have more tonight. >> busy night ahead. we will see you later. thank you. trump may seem unstoppable in the pursuit of the republican nomination but the general election is a different story. a cnn poll out today shows in a head-to-head matchup with lk the former secretary of state beats him, 52 to 44%. however, the poll says clinton would lose to rubio, by 3 points, and to cruz, by 1. if sanders would have been the democratic nominee he would beat trump by 12% in the matchup and beat rubio of florida by 8%, and texas senator cruz by 17. and we of course will have continuing super tuesday coverage, throughout this evening, and that includes results as they come in, and at 10:00, the cbs news special on campaign 2016, followed by a complete wrap-up with us on cbs 2 news at 11:00. new at 5:00 right now, the nypd announcing a plan to stop arresting people for the lowest level offenses. starting next monday, police will simply ticket suspects for offenses like littering, also, riding between cars on the subway. more serious offenses, like disorderly conduct, trespassing, loitering, and second degree harassment, will continue to result in arrests. may are deblasio says the change will allow police to focus on more serious crimes. scammers forced their way into a bronx river's apartment. and assaults her in front of her toddler. police say they were posing as utility workers. cbs 2 alice gainer has more on the hunt for the suspects. >> reporter: police were in and out of this bronx apartment building on ma genta street all day long canvassing the area for surveillance video. they say yesterday afternoon, two men knocked on the door of this woman who did not want to appear on camera. speaking to cbs 2 in spanish, the 26-year-old woman says the men claimed to be from con ed, and once she opened the door, they forced their way in grabbing her and covering her mouth and tied her to a table and hit her in the head and mouth. and both men wearing blue latex gloves. a knife from the kitchen, while the other used a cord to bound her to a coffee table. then police say he sexually assaulted her. her toddler daughter was nearby, and a neighbor heard the child's cries and called police. the men took $50, and ran off. >> to see a child, to see what has really happened to her mother, that is traumatizing. >> reporter: other neighbors were so frightened they didn't want to appear on camera either. but this woman who has lived here for 33 years says these scammers come around a lot. >> the evening, they come late evening. like 6:00, 7:00 in the night. >> she says this attack is frightening. but she already knows what not to do. >> i don't pay them no mine. i'm not opening my door to them. >> the utility company is issuing a reminder to all of its customers, about these impostor, letting people know that their employees always carry a photo i.d., with the company logo on it. >> the other problem residents say, is that it is so easy to get into the building. and that the outside doors are often unlocked. of the bronx, alice gainer, cbs 2 news. some new information, following the near drowning of a little girl last month. the health department has shut down the pools at a popular queens spa. since the incident, safety procedures at spa castle were reviewed by the city health accident and investigators found alterations were made to two pools, without the department's approval and inspection. the agency says the pools will stay closed until spa castle puts a revised safety plan in place that meets doh requirements. and an investigation is under way, after a new jersey transit train struck and killed an amtrak employee. the person was hit on the tracks just before 5:00 this morning. near the jersey avenue station. in north brunswick. no one on board was hurt. it is unclear what the person was doing on the tracks. the fight between the government and apple over the locked iphone played out on capitol hill today. the house judiciary committee held a hearing over apple's refusal to unlock the iphone in the san bernardino massacre. apple says breaking into the phone would set a dangerous precedent for government intrusion. the fbi director says investigators must have access to the evidence. >> it is about the case. and trying to do a competent job of understanding, is there somebody else? and are there clues to what else might have gone on here. that is our job. >> a brooklyn federal judge ruled yesterday that the government cannot force apple to help it break into a phone. in another case. and in two weeks ago a california judge ruled that apple must help the fbi hack the terrorist phone. there is no sign of a break in the supreme court standoff between president obama and senate republicans, after a short meeting at the white house, mr. obama and vice president biden met with g.o.p. and democratic leaders for less than an hour. democrats say the republicans held firm, in their reversal to consider any supreme court nominee from mr. obama. they want the next president to make that decision. make a nominee -- to name, rather, a nominee within a few weeks. breaking news right now. a key member of the yankees suspended. >> but it is not a big surprise. cbs 2 otis livingston here now with the details. otis? >> it wasn't a case of if. it was when. and we finally got the word today. new yankee closer rolis chapman has a 30 game suspension for violating the league policy on domestic violence for the october 30 incident. he will not appeal the decision. major league baseball statement eluded directly to chatman's use of a firearm, which was fired in a garage, and the impact of that behavior on his partner as being inappropriate. chatman released a statement in which he denied harming his girlfriend and saying i should have exercised better judgment with respect to certain actions and for that, i am sorry. he can still participate in spring lifetime concert in havana on friday, march 25. that is the first open air concert in the country by a british rock band. this will come three days after that historic visit, coming up to cuba by the the rain is arriving after 9:00 p.m. tonight, and by 9:00 p.m., i mean areas west of new york city, and i don't think new york city will get into the rain until, you know, more like maybe sometime around midnight or so. but the worst of it will be 2:00 a.m. until ak a.m. and gusty winds -- 5:00 a.m., gusty winds associated up to 40 miles an hour. out of here, late morning, it is gone. the temperatures will be dropping, after that. so here is the relationship between the two. the cold air gets here, after the moisture is already gone. and so what we are going to do is watch for how that cold air sets up later in the week with added moisture. here is the front. the snow around michigan is going north of us. we will be dealing with anywhere from the ohio valley to the tennessee valley. and calling for rain. starting up tonight, 7:00 p.m., it is not here. and 9:00 p.m., it is 49. 11:00 a.m., 50 degrees. or 11:00 p.m., excuse me. by 3:00 a.m., looking at 55. notice the flash there. i parent- teacher conferences. >> i believe in old schooling. >> psi-119 in glendale, queens is part of the new school way, turning to student-led conferences, students as young as kindergarten age, prepare and present their own progress report to their parents and teachers take a backseat and serve as moderators. the expeditionary learning school has been doing it for >> i would give myself a four because i like to meet new people and share ideas. >> some parents are not comfortable with the change. >> before, each teacher, they are different, and they told you what they do, and the grade for the son, and does he do well in school. >> a lot of things will fall through the cracks because especially the little one, you know, how much can you actually trust that they are going to be forth coming with all of the information that you need? >> scott, president of expeditionary learning education, oversees the curriculum at 150 schools across the country. including 10 in new york city. where students have been leading their own conferences for more than a decade. >> you see some things that are changing in the student. their learning. and you see them get smarter and smarter about what works as a learner, for them. and you see them get invested. >> the administration at each new york city public school decides what kind of conference to have, and while it is not mandatory to hold student-led education says they encourage it. >> i think i like the new way. and i think the students have a lot to say. >> do you think there is anything that you are having trouble in school? says that he thinks he caught the person responsible in the act. cbs 2 elise finch has the story from bay ridge, new at 5:30. >> reporter: last summer, brian noticed the bird feeders in front of his apartment kept getting damage and taken down and the food scattered below with ground glass or gasoline. the neighbors say they noticed cans of cat food topped with white powder and odd substances strategically placed around the block and they noticed animals started dieing. >> groups of birds dead on the ground. no reason whatsoever. in various locations. and then cats, just dead on the ground. or any bruises, blood, nothing. just dead. >> with his neighbor's help, brian installed a motion activated camera aimed at the tree where the bird feeders hang, and it took months but finally saw what he was looking for, a plan with a long pole taking down the bird feeders and had a liquid under the tree. and they say it is antifreeze. >> they are shocked or scared because they don't know if the person acted alone or one of many. >> i am really upset. >> it is such a cliche to pick on somebody small and defenseless. >> i personally think they're cowards and they have issues. >> brian says he hopes that whoever is responsible for destroying the bird feeders and animals caught before more people are hurt. >> the stuff is on the ground and the sidewalk, and any dog can track it and eat it and any kid can eat. it it is a danger to everybody. every living thing. >> there is an ongoing cruelty investigation squad. residents say now that there is video evidence, they hope the person or people responsible will be caught. elise finch, cbs 2 news. >> residents are urging anyone who recognizes the man in the video to call the animal cruelty investigation squad. at the 68th precinct. another emotional day of testimony from sportscaster erin andrews in her civil suit against a stalker and a tennessee hotel, suing a nashville marriott and the man who secretly videotaped her nude, for 7 $75 million, the stalker michael barrett admitted taping andrews through a hotel room peephole in 2008 and posting the video online. it has been seen nearly 17 million times. andrews says she has been emotionally traumatized. >> it has really hit home for me and hurts me the most is, when girls, high school, college, they tweet me, and they say i want to be erin andrew, except for the marriott stalker thing. and i can't control that. >> barrett spent more than two years in federal prison. the hotel says what happened to andrews is terrible, but that barrett is to blame. could sharing pictures online with your friends and family lead to a curious stranger at your door? it happened recently. to more than a dozen college students. cbs 2's tony aiello shows us how easy it is to become a victim of social stalking. >> in a city of 8 million people, i set out to find a stranger using social media. and within minutes, pinpointed her exact location and her real name. >> are you tammy? >> i knew about the japanese tea she had breakfast and where she recently traveled. >> are you going back to london any time soon. >> going back to london? >> yes. >> how do you know that? >> kind of scary. >> and kind of easy. i used an online tool that maps instagram pictures in realtime. to see who was nearby. and then scrolled through her instagram feed to learn more >> if you, tony aiello, can find this person, like that. so can anyone else. >> lance yulanoff is a social media expert at mashable .com. >> they are leaving a trail of bread crumbs for everyone, family, friends, criminals. >> alleged criminals. such as arturo gollbond. >> through my blinds, like i scream at the top of my lungs. >> these college students, two of a dozen young women the man targeted and stalked them using social media posts to figure out where they lived. pictures from parties, bars and restaurant, told them when they were away, and that's when he allegedly broke in. >> he took a lot of my underwear, and bras. >> stealing underwear. jewelry. and electronics. >> and you posted on instagram, repeatedly throughout the day, and there are services that can connect the dots. >> so what can you do? experts say delay posting and put up pictures that tell followers where have you been not where you are. and don't post pictures of your reveals your daily routine. and learn to manage the location and privacy settings on your mobile device. you can tell it to never use your location, when posting to social media. >> double check, to see what settings are available. and what privacy settings you could set. >> it is just people realizing when it actually makes sense to broadcast where you are. >> and when it makes sense to tell your smartphone to play dumb about where you happen was not just another assembly day for these youngsters inside the andrew muller primary school in miller place. or more specifically, for 7- year-old chance lutz. the second grade her no idea about the surprise visit he was about to get. young chance leaped up to greet a marine who had been deployed for many months. his classmates quickly added their excited approval. >> i'm surprised. >> so surprised, young chance could barely speak. the youngster worries his older brother tim, a lance corporal in the marines. but the admiration runs both ways. >> he is always my first person i want to see every single time i come home. >> the surprise visit was orchestrated by chance's mom. >> last night, we were on our way home, and he was talking about timmy and how upset he was because he misses him so much. so that was real sweet. >> amazingly the two share a common bond when it comes to chance's second grade teacher, barbara thompson taught older brother tim 10 years ago and did a double take when he met chance. >> i called him timmy by mistake, a couple of times, absolutely. >> now they are reunited, they have big plans for their time together. >> you will get me off the bus? >> and when we both get home, i am going to give him his christmas gift. >> spending time with him. just love him. just going to the backyard and play any type of sports. just watching sponge bob or >> wow. >> nope. speaking of the weather, nothing crazy around here right now, lonnie. we are a little cooler today than yesterday but not a bad- looking day out there. for this time of the year. it is going to be -- it will be the reminder that we are still in winter but let's first get you over to the weather- watchers and check in on temperatures around the area. and so, mid to upper 40s, some lower 50s out there. and down by the shore, what have we got here? we have a 50-degree reading. this is from john in patchogue, 50 degrees. sunshine. and john is telling us, this weather is just teasing us. for a warm spring. well you know what? it is really the ground hog, said spring would be getting here early. it never said an immediate start to spring but it may get here early. it may be the case. let me get you outside right now. there is the picture. high thin clouds overhead. 45 degrees as of right now. high temperature goes into the books as 52 degrees. typical is 45. above average there. interesting, tomorrow, you may very well be having a higher temperature on the almanac, and it is going to feel colder. it is one of those high temperature reading, you get like at 3:00 in the morning. march has everything. you can get some snow. get some rain. get some big winds. everything happens in march. it is a transitional mon as are you going from winter into spring. march. and actually, you know what? we will get everything this week. even some snow chances out there. here is how we see it on the picture. some high thin clouds come through the area. but not so bad. you can get out east end of long island, hatch -- patchogue, just like john was saying. clouds are starting to make their way in. off to the west, you can start to see a hint at some precipitation. we need to look at the big overall picture to get a feel for what is going on. this front is marching through the area and moving kind of like this, all right? so consequently we focus on this area. right around kentucky, tennessee, that's the precipitation that moves in for us. into the overnight hours. into tomorrow morning. now, watch how it is going to work out. here we are, like 1:00, 2:00 in the morning and then get to 7:00, 8:00 in the morning, can, and it is gone. how much rain are we picking up? models are indicating somewhere around a half of an inch of rain. maybe some spots a little more than that. but somewhere around a half inch of rain. then you go way out west, seattle, portland and looking at this system, well, that rain that we are going to pick up tonight and tomorrow is associated with a cold front. now the cold air is in place and mow we will watch this system make a long march across the country. but remember that cold air is there. and now, you put moisture on top of it and are you talking a snowfall chance, friday morning. how much snow are we looking at? anywhere from a coating, to an inch or two. and not a big system. but you don't really get a lot of big systems this time of the year. 53 will be the high temperature. for wednesday. but notice that big arrow that points down. you are going to catch 53 at around 3:00 in the morning and they just drop throughout the day. and a blustery windy one out there. with 27. and only up to 39. pretty good looking sky. but a cold one out there. and friday starting off at 27. and only up to 37. but now friday, late thursday into friday. next snow chance. >> okay. >> not over yet, guys. >> thank you, lonnie. a doctor, a police officer, a senator, how could teenagers pose as these professionals? >> reporter: maurice and christine, i spoke with the family who say they are absolutely distraught as they plan sheyla's funeral but they are also vindicated in knowing that the alleged driver is now behind bars. children in the neighborhood gather after school to see where 7-year-old sheyla pichardo was struck and killed. >> i am the father too of a 7- year-old. and i want her to see what is going on here. and i feel sorry for the family. >> sheyla's father addressed other parents today, asking them to cherish their time together. >> i speak from the bottom of my heart. take care of your kids. >> reporter: his family in mourning. after a hit-and-run driver killed his little girl, and injured his wife. sheyla and her mother were walking to school, monday morning, when they were struck. >> when they got me in the corner, i saw the little girl and she is already dead. >> left to die in the middle of street by a man police identify as fabian rodriguez-kya. a neighbors say was a father himself. his son, just one year younger than shala. police say after the crash came the coverup. at around 9:00 a.m. the driver's girlfriend joanna alvarez reported her car stolen. it was found around midnight. near their home. >> we were able to impound the car.
