the flames. i said, oh, my gosh. the screaming and hollering. that's when i got the phone and dialed 911. good firefighters were on the scene three minutes later. 11 fire companies and 40 firefighters and medics rushed to his aid. despite their best efforts, they weren't able to save the veteran. he was not able to make it out on his own. >> he had one leg, but he used a wheelchair and a walker. >> when resuwas no longer an option, firefighters went in to recover benjamin boone's body. his burned out wheelchair and other personal belongings a reminder to everyone here of exactly what was lost. >> he was a very nice person. >> the cause of the fire is under investigation. whether there were working smoke detectors inside of the home, something they're working very hard to figure out right now. reporting live in south philadelphia, i'm pamela osborne, nbc10 news. >> pamela, thank you. a philadelphia mother is accused of killing her 7-month-old son and her 3-year-old daughter during a visit to south florida. authorities found the children in an apartment near ft. lauderdale yesterday. michael spears from our sister station wtvj in south florida has more. >> 7 months old and 3 years old, those are the ages of 2 kids police said were found dead behind this miramar home. this philadelphia mother allegedly smothered her two kids with a bed sheet. investigators have charged 40-year-old sophia hines with two counts of premeditated murder. miramar police tell us she and the two kids were visiting from philadelphia and had been in town for about a week visiting a relative. wednesday, 5:20 in the evening, a 911 call came in about a medical emergency involving the kids. investigators tell us they arrived to find the mom and a relative outside, the kids inside, unresponsive. cpr couldn't save them. according to the newly released arrest report, hines was alone with the kids, and she admitted she grabbed a bed sheet and held it over both of her kids mouths until they stopped breathing. there were no other apparent signs of injuries, but hines gave no explanation why she murdered her kids. she's expected to appear before a judge later today. back to you. >> and philadelphia police continue to investigate a home invasion and restaurant robbery in the city's logan section. two masked men held a family at gunpoint on a corner of warnocand rus comb while they went through the house and the china garden restaurant downstairs. the two men took off with cash, two cell phones and an ipad. medics responded to the scene, but no one was hurt. now an nbc10 exclusive. surveillance video captured an accident involving a philadelphia police cruser. this happened during a traffic stop at 21st and carpenter street. if you watch here, the driver of the stopped vehicle suddenly throwed the car into reverse, hitting the police cruiser, and then just speeding away. the officers were not hurt and the driver got away. philadelphia's full city council will now consider the so-called soda tax after the bill passed its first hurdle last night. a council committee approved a consensus measure to put a 1.5 cent per ounce tax on sugary and artificially sweetened soft drinks. the mayor jim kinney had been pushing for a 3 kept an ounce tax to pay for universal pre-k, community schools. passage of the lesser tax came after the kinney administration revealed that some of the money raised would go to the city's general fund. >> a bait and switch used to plug a bunch of holes. what retailers tell us is they're going to be forced to pass this on to consumers. >> traditionally, the bills come out of committees with a significant vote, more often than not, it will pass on a final passage. >> council is scheduled to cast a final vote on the soda tax next thursday. >> you'll soon have more places to buy wine in pennsylvania. yesterday, governor tom wolf signed a bill to allow wine sales in restaurants, hotels and delis and it will give them more flexibility over hours and prices. the union that represents state liquor store employees says the changes will lead to job losses, but the governor predicts the stores that can now sell wine will add jobs. it's looking more unlikely that you'll be able to carry booze on the atlantic city boardwalk this summer. koor to the press of atlantic city, council pulled the ordinance from its agenda that would permit open containers of alcohol on the board. he delayed the vote to alloy the state alcohol and beverage control board to take a closer look at the ordinance. council only meets monthly, so it will be july before it could be considered again. a cool start to the day. warming up now down the shore. you can expect plenty of sunshine today. we take a live look at our camera in shot, it is 68 degrees right now in atlantic city. we'll take a closer look at our philadelphia neighborhood temperatures. 65, parkside, 67 in philly international airport. 64, chestnut hill. 64, winchester park and fox chase. society hill coming in at 67 degrees. nice and sunny across the area we're at 64 through much of the lehigh valley. as we go through the day today, the sunshine is going to stay with us. not going to see storms like we did yesterday. sunny skies, if you're in king of prussia right now. by 2:00, 70. by 5:00 p.m., 74 degrees in king of prussia. also, your seven-day warmup and thunderstorms on the way for your weekend. that's straight ahead. >> people all over our region continue to clean up debris and damage after storms roll through yesterday. certainly a busy morning for the tree removal companies. trees fell across many roads in our area. here's a look at a tree smashing through an svu that was parked on the street in philadelphia's east oaklane neighborhood. it knocked down power lines. >> now to delaware, nbc10 found power lines and trees all over the roads in north wilmington. this mess was on silver side road, just west of the i-95 underpass. >> and at the jersey shore, the wind were so strong, they ripped the roof right off this apartment building in atlantic city. as you can see, there are workers trying to repair and remove that roof. part of the pavement buckled when a tree uprooted and toppled onto a home on willowdale drive in cherry hill. the family wasn't home when it happened. also this photo from a woman who was driving this car when a tree crashed down on it. this is in camden. >> the front, no way they would have made it. and the only thing i can say is the lord loves me. you hear me, he loves me. >> yes, indeed. power crews worked through the evening to fix downed wires. at last check, psg skn e and atlantic city electric report under 2500 customers remain without power. >> closer arguments in the corruption trial for congressman chaka fattah are expected to happen monday. so the jury should have the case early next week. all parties rested their cases yesterday. the government says co-defendant herbert veederman gave fattah money to get a ambassadorship. ed rendell testified he was a friend and wasn't trying to bribe him, just wanted to help him out. prosecutors claim fattah took an illegal $1 million loan to fund his mayoral campaign. >> bill cosby's lawyers are again seeking to have the sex assault charges against him dropped. they filed a petition against the use of statements of his accuser, andrea constand, abused at his home in 2004. his lawyers say constand should have been called to testify in cosby's preliminary hearing last month. prosecutors instead used her police statements. a judge upheld the charges and sent the case to trial. the new jersey supreme court this morning upheld a 2011 law that ended cost of living increases for people with state pensions. the state estimates that freezing the raises safe the state more than $17 billion. public unions wanted that law overturned. time now to check the roads with first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. what are you seeing? >> unfortunately, things are extremely slow going on the blue route southbound. let that be a warning to you. you're going towant to add extra time to your trip or just basically avoid the blue route at this point. there's a slow-moving maintenance vehicle. it's headed southbound, and it's taking out two right-hand lanes. this is the 476 southbound at baltimore pike where things have really gotten better since the slow-moving maintenance vehicle was in their path. still, check out the drive time. it's going to take you close to 50 minutes to go from the schuylkill expressway to 95 on the blue route. 76, things are moving pretty well for this time of day. eastbound, a 17-empty drive from the blue route to the vine street expressway, and 95 southbound, no problems to report between woodhaven road and center city, philadelphia. live look outside, this is the 42 freeway right at route 41 in depferred. you can see it's taking about seven minutes which is longer than normal to go northbound on the 42 freeway between route 95 and the walt whitman bridge. for our delaware drivers in and around wilmington, a pretty smooth drive on 95, if you're going to 295 and 445, about 11 minutes. >> thank you. happening today, a group of philadelphia school students will weigh in on the city's community schools plan. that's one of the new initiatives mayor kinney hopes to pay for with the sody tax. they plan to open five to seven community schools in the next school year, but the district wants to hear what the kids themselves think. the students will two days of events will be held in louisville, kentucky. >> mourners arriving early for the muslim funeral prayer service. >> as good as he was in the ring, the ring stopped at around 42, but he never stopped fighting. >> fans and admirers stood in line to get tickets to today's service and friday's funeral. tomorrow, a slow procession will drive through the streets that played a key role in ali's life. it's held in an arena. pallbearers include lennox lewis and will smith, who portrayed the boxing great in the hollywood film "ali." former president bill clinton, friend billy crystal, and broadcaster bryant gumbel will deliver eulogies. >> what you're seeing are muhammad's wishes, and he had a hand in all the planning. >> heads of state, an array of clergy and hollywood stars will be present. but ali placed an emphasis on his service being accessible to the everyman. the service will also be streamed online. muhammad ali making sure his fans can hear his final message. ali will be laid to rest here in town. his attorney says the grave site will be modest, in keeping with muslim tradition. in louisville, kentucky, sarah dallof, nbc news. >> decision 2016. dementic presidential candidate bernie sanders arrived in washington, d.c. for a private meeting with president obama at the white house. sanders reportedly requested the meeting, which is scheduled to take place at this hour. it's expected the two men will discuss the state of the presidential race. sanders' rival, hillary clinton, earned enough delegates to become the presumptive nominee, but sanders has continvowed to continue his campaign until the convention here in philadelphia next month. >> happening now, speaker of the house paul ryan unveiled a national security strategy that includes an overhaul of the immigration system. we're looking live at the event that andrea mitchell is moderating at the council on foreign relations. it would install added defenses to keep out extremists, criminals, and drug dealers. the strategy called for high fencing along the border, but does not include building a wall as proposed by presumptive republican nominee donald trump. >> tropical storm colin is long gone, but it left behind beach erosion that is now threatening some homes along florida's gulf coast. inspectors deemed two houses unsafe. they say they're on the brink of collapse. at least two condo buildings are being monitored as well. charlotte county says it's working with the homeowners to keep them safe from future storms, but it's up to the homeowners to make repairs. >> good afternoon. philadelphia, 15-mile-per-hour wind speed almost in allentown. today is going to be one of those days where it's gusty at times, but it's still beautiful. sunny and mid70s. that's the forecast for the afternoon. here's a look at your neighborhood weather for the afternoon hours. topping out around 76 degrees in somerton. if you're in the lehigh valley, bethlehem at 76 degrees as well as reading. in south jersey, we expect the mid 70s across the board, and along the shore, mid 70s. plenty of sunshine, a nice dry day, but a pretty windy day in some cases. delaware looking at 78 degrees in dover this afternoon. we stay breezy today. this is future weather. nice and dry. nice and sunny. then we go into tomorrow. we're still going to stay dry and sunny, but it is going to be warmer, closer to 80 degrees across the area. now we look into saturday, we'll see showers and storms approaching the area. this is by 4:30 saturday afternoon. we do have a risk of some severe storms around the philadelphia area, down into northern delaware, new castle county and points north and west of philadelphia. that's going to be the best chance for strong to severe storms saturday afternoon. the lower chance will be along the shore, and the delaware beaches, but you still at least have a small chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. so if you're heading to the shore, 75 degrees saturday. mostly sunny with a slight chance of a shower or storm. sunday, 83 degrees, looking good, even into monday. if you're headed towards wildwood this weekend, saturday, 78 degrees. slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm, sunday, around 81. cape may, low 80s on saturday. mostly sunny, chance of a shower orstorm. sunday, nice and dry, mid 80s. the shore forecast and delaware beaches products is taking effect. happening due, a new law goes into effect ain california allowing terminaly ill patients to end their lives. it states patients with six months left to live or less can ask a physician for life-ending medication, but patients, doctors, and pharmacists can opt out any time. supporters say it provides an end to suffering for those who need it the most. >> california residents now have to be at least 21 to buy tobacco products. governor jerry brown signed legislation last month raising the state's minimum age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21. the new law also regulates electronic cigarettes. california is the second state after hawaii to raise the legal age to 21. the tough loss for a south philadelphia neighborhood. a disabled world war ii veteran is killed in an overnight house fire. what we're learning about the victim and what may have sparked the flames just ahead. >> and it's case that generated so much reaction and controversy, now we're learning new details about the former stanford university swimmer convicted in a sex assault case. there's been another fire death in the city of philadelphia, and this loss is especially tough for a south philadelphia neighborhood. the victim was a man in his 90s who was disabled, and his loss is being felt by his neighbors. pamela osborne joins us live after talking to the people that knew him. pam, this man was beloved and revered in his neighborhood. >> he most certainly was. they tell us this is just another tragic loss for this family. benjamin boone was his name, but neighbors knew him as b.b. they tell us he had a daughter who lived with him at the home. she passed away not long ago. they say that he served our country in world war ii, returned home and settled into this block prayer service for maholm ali. about 14,000 are expected to attend. this is a live picture inside the room where the service is about to begin. nbc national correspondent jay gray is live for us in louisville. jay, this is like the funeral of a head of state. >> yeah, you know, vai, it really is. people from around thp country and around the globe showing up today. the kentucky expo center, shifting to a makeshift mosque for the morning, and you said 14,000. we're now just getting an updated number. 16,000 or more expected to be part of this typical prayer service in the muslim faith that is said for all who pass. muhammad ali was very specific before his passing, saying that he wanted this service open to people of all faiths. so his fans could be a part of this final good-bye. he will do that. that will take place today. tomorrow in the arena behind me here will be the public memorial. 22,000 are expected to be here for that. this town full of people who just want to express their love, their sympathy for the ali family, and they really exhibit how he touched so many lives over his lifetime. not only from the boxing ring but more importantly as a humanitarian after his boxing career was over. that's what you hear from most of those who have come here to be a part of all this. again, it is this tomorrow, tomorrow, a procession through his old neighborhood and past his childhood home, down the street that now bears his name. they'll end up at the arena here for a public memorial as a week of different events to honor and memorialize muhammad ali will here. beautiful shot outside, and in philadelphia right now. it's slowly warming up, but it's also a little breezy outside, gusty, too. winds gusting near 26 miles per hour, sustained wind at 16. 67 degrees. today will be a little warmer than yesterday, but the wind is going to stay with us. also don't forget your seven-day forecast is always scrolling at the bottom of the screen. for philadelphia, as we go through the afternoon, sunshine. we stay dry. nothing like yesterday. we'll continue to see clear skies even through tonight, topping out in the mid 70s. then our pennsylvania in the mid 70s. clear as we go into tonight. more sunshine for your friday, but it's the weekend that we're keeping an eye on. some areas could see potentially strong to severe storms for part of your weekend. i'll show you which areas can expect that coming up. >> thank you. new information in the tel aviv attack. two palestinians opened fire in central tel aviv killing four israelis and injured several others. it's one of the deadliest attacks in an eight-month wave of violence. a report now from tel aviv. >> they have two suspects in custody, and what they'll be trying to work out is how exactly they made their way from the home in the west bank inside israel and past and through all of the security barriers and security measures that israel has in place to check that kind of transit. their home town in the southern west bank has been completely closed off, and in another punitive measure by the israeli authorities, 83,000 travel permits issued by israel to palestinians living in the west bank and gaza, giving them special permission in this holy month of ramadan to visit the holy city of jerusalem, all of those permits have now been revoked. as far as israel's security forces and security services go, their priority will be preventing another similar attack. that is really very difficult for them to do. difficult, tough challenge because what happened in tel aviv last night bears all the hallmarks of the kind of attack that has been characteristic of this wave of violence which started last fall. that is young people are the attackers and their appear to be acting on their own without the support of any kind of militant network or terrorist organization. that makes their actions and makes their attacks difficult to anticipate and very difficult to prevent. back to you. >> workers found the body of one of the two workers buried in a landslide in southern mississippi gravel pit late last week. the two men were operating heavy equipment when they were buried in 10 to 12 feet of mud, water, and slush. rescue crews are still looking for the second victim. an official with the mine safety and health administration says the agency will investigate this incident. and we are learning new details about the character of that former stanford student and swimming star sentenced to six month for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. brock turner lied to the court about his drug use and drinking, and the proof is right on his cell phone. we have an update on the case that sparked outrage from coast to coast. >> in a memo filed by prosecutors presented during sentencing and obtained by news, brock turner caught in lies about drug use and drinking. the proof on his own cell phone. this in stark contrast to the clean cut image he presented to the court, writing to the judge, coming from a small town in ohio, i had never really experienced selling or partying that involved alcohol, and telling probation officers he had never done drugs. but multiple texts references drinking, smoking, weed texting one, i did acid with blake last week. they also show him using a bong. in the months before the sexual asaultd of an unconscious female on stanford's campus, a text message saying do you think i could buy wax so we could do dabs, and before that, he was chased and arrested on campus by police for underaged drinking, caught with a fake i.d. in response to another friend bragging about candy flipping. >> the act of taking lsd and mdma together, he texts, i have to try that, i heard it's awesome. now at least one letter of support for turner withdrawn. his high school counselor saying he should be held accountable. i'my sorry for the additional pain my statement has caused. contradictions new to the court of public opinion, but not to the judge who although under fire for the sentencing still has his supporters. frustrated prosecutors, however, say this isn't justice. >> i had hoped for more time. we fought for more time. the victim. >> that was gadi schwartz reporting. with good behavior, turner could be out of jail by labor day. even so, his lawyers have already begun the process of appealing the sentence. >> officials say a georgia police officer went to the wrong house and mistakenly shot a homeowner. it started when someone called 911 to report yelling and gunshots in georgia just outside of atlanta. officers responded to the wrong address and were met by a 63-year-old homeowner armed with a handgun. when he did obey officers' comants to drop the weapon, they shot him in the neck. he's hospitalized in critical condition. police eventually found the house and it turns out no shots had been fired there. the officer who shot the homeowner has been placed on administrative leave. >> hundreds of people had to evacuate their homes as a wildfire raged in one arizona town. close to 300 people left their homes. the fire grew to 600 acres yesterday but is expected to ease as cooler temperatures move in. no one has been hurt. this fire is the same town where a wildfire in 2013 killed 19 members of an elite firefightering crew. >> and check out this video that shows two young girls in florida saving a drowning toddler. police believe the 3-year-old either slipped or jumped into the pool while walking around its edges. no one notices for a minute and 30 seconds and then her 9-year-old cousin swims over and pulls the toddler out of the water and an 18-year-old gives the toddler cpr and revives her just before paramedics arrive. the toddler is now doing okay. >> philadelphia authorities released new video this morning. they hope can help catch theperson they say threw an object at the window of the district attorney's office causing it to break. this happened at south penn square in center moving in. this is saturday afternoon, expect widespread thunderstorms for the philadelphia area up towards trenden, down towards wilmington and points north and west. the lowest chance will be delaware and the shore this weekend. that's probably the best place to go anyway. here's a storm threat for saturday in the yellow shaded area, that's where we expect the highest chance for strong to severe thunderstorms, gusty winds, lightning, heavy rain, potential for hail. we could see all of that in the majority of areas we go through saturday afternoon. if you're heading to the shore, you are a slight chance of a shower or storm saturday, but the lowest across the area. high temperature for the shore saturday around 80 degrees. marigate, low 80s. rehoboth beach, 79. sunday looking good. as we go into the next ten days for the philadelphia area, tomorrow, we're warmer than today, around 80 and sunny. thunderstorms saturday, mid 80s. by sunday, we're dry. mid 80s as well. we're going to stay in the 80s. we're going to stay warm. take a look at next week. we're still in the 80s. we're not looking at any 70s coming back into the forecast, and by the middle of next week, that's
