an incredible achievement, willie. now we'll all find out it happened on the burbank lot. >> like the moon landing. 36,000 miles an hour and more than 300 million miles away. i had the same thought when they were celebrating. i was thinking the people, the american people and people around the world who sat in a room and thought about how to do this. they crunched the numbers and pulled it off. for the first time scientists successfully landed a vehicle on the comet. this time yesterday we were waiting anxiously as rosetta separated. in the end the lander the size of a dishwasher made it successfully to the comet's icy dusty surface. just in this morning, this is the first image from the lander on the surface of the comet. there were celebrations the world over particularly in germany where the mission was controlled, some cried. tears of joy, obviously. others paid tribute in their own

senators. harry reid is reportedly holding talks with senator elizabeth warren about joining the leadership in an especially creative role. senator reid is promising to work with senator mitch mcconnell and other republicans and open to align more votes in the lame duck session. >> i saw firsthand how strategy of obstruction was debilitating to our system. i have no desire to engaging that manner. although the desks in this great chamber may move around and change our duty to help working american families never will. senate democrats are ready to work in good faith with the republican counterparts whether it is today, tomorrow, january, no matter when it is to help the middle class and when we do that we help all of our citizens. >> however at least on wednesday five democratic senators would not commit to backing senator reid for leader and republicans are already making him a top target for 2016. nevada's other senator republican dean hiller is urging
governor sandoval to run. sandoval said he's focused on being governor. >> nicole, if sandoval runs we'll win by 20, 30 points. i was one of the few people to predict harry reid would win in 2010. sandoval if he runs it's over. democrats don't want harry reid. he's become the face was obstructionism. a lot of people were laughing while he said that. he's the face of obstructionism. he's going to be fighting for his political life over the next two years. he should to be done. democrats would be stupid to let this guy lead over the next two years. >> i love what mary landrieu said. she's making it a political asset. she's basically running against the senate leadership, against harry reid and if she is, i hope she isn't, i hope a republican wins but if she is successful
she will weaken him even further. >> keystone which will create 55,000 jobs. >> which the obama state department would not have the environmental impact that democrats said. >> obama state department says it creates 55,000 new jobs and not have a bad environmental impact and obama says he'll veto the bill if it passes. democrats will try to help mary. >> an issue they have been hemming and h awing for six years. the senate and house will vote on the keystone xl pipeline and it's because of that razor thin senate race in louisiana. they are both sponsoring bills in their respect chambers trying to show they are delivering for their home state. senator landrieu has branded herself as critical to louisiana as chair of the senate energy committee, a committee republican leadership says cassidy would join if elected.
landrieu face an uphill re-election battle even more so after the party's campaign committee pulled its tv money ahead of her runoff. >> if take my name off of this bill helps it to pass, go right ahead. this is not about credit. it is not about glory. it is not about politics. it is about getting our work done. >> senator landrieu, national democrats have pulled their ad from your campaign, your leaders are not standing with you today, our lost cause? >> i don't believe i am. of course i've stood against my leadership when i've had to and this is one of my times. my leadership at least two or three that have been elected have not been strong keystone supporters. this is another example of many that i can give you where i've had to stand up to my caucus and have done it. now having won two elections in runoffs like this i wouldn't say -- i wouldn't count on me
being a lost cause. >> is barack obama, steve rattner, the suggestion from the white house he would veto a keystone bill that his state department says creates a lot of good jobs and doesn't harm the environment. is that an example of how big money in politics is irrationally distorting the political process. who are the big funders of the left. >> this is an emotional issue. yes some jobs being created. yes it would help us on the energy front. in either case not quite as much as proponents say but it's a touch point, a symbolic -- >> the big question is why would you not do it. >> why would you not do it? >> yes. jobs will not spring forth forever and it's not going to create a major impact in oil supply any, where but why would you not do it if its 50,000 new jobs >> because what you've got is a test of will between the
environmental groups who basically -- >> i'm talking logically. why would you not do this? forget the ideology of the extremists. >> if you thought there was an environmental concern. or you want to stop fossil fuels. stopping fossil fuels is not a reality. >> is there a down the middle study that suggests keystone will harm the environment? >> there are studies that keystone would help the environment in the following sense. right now that oil is being transported by trucks and by railroads, which consume more energy and more environmentally dangerous than putting it in a pipeline. >> the state department coked that. >> barack obama's state department -- that's the ill logic of this. it's a stupid political issue that people on the far left have decided to make a cause when there's just no logic attached to it, and people on the far right are talking about how it's
going save the world and it's not. >> here's what it does for mary landrieu. the refineries we have down on the gulf coast are used to procession heavy oil coming from venezuela. they are not as equipped to process the oil we're producing in north dakota. this would bring heavy oil down from canada to those refineries. it would help mary out a lot. >> let's bring in a couple more guests from washington, mike allen and kasie hunt. good morning to you got. k asm kasie let me start with you. >> she got the answer out of senator landrieu. i've been through a couple of runoffs before. don't count me out. >> it was a fascinating day up there. we're just saying after six years of sitting on the shelf and being in limb jobs boom, it springs to the floor in one day.
>> hey, guys. if you talk to mary landrieu's supporters in particular they will say this move she made ticked off some democrats and republicans. republicans don't want to give her a win on this that's why you saw all that last minute maneuvering in the house. they put her opponent on the house version of the bill. on the democratic side there's a lot of tension up here yesterday. a tense moment between mary landrieu and senator chuck schumer who is a leader among the democrats and this puts a lot of democrats in a tough spot. the question at this point whether mary landrieu can get the 60 votes she needs to push it through the senate. will chuck schumer and harry reid help her find those 60 votes. it could be a loss for her. >> when you see five democrats have come out already and said they may not support harry reid, what that usually means there's about 20 or 30 more that are saying the same thing off camera
or away from the borders. do you sense or do you have any reason to believe there's a growing ground swell to push harry reid out of his leadership position or is it limited to these five people? >> i think that harry reid not coming out of this as a minority leader of his caucus would be a huge surprise. i do think that supporting either one of these, either michigan mcconnell or harry reid has become toxic to a certain extent. jean shaheen is typically supportive of harry reid but the race she went through he became toxic. on the republican side i talked to ted cruz in a asked him whether or not he plans to support mitch mcconnell and his answer was call my press office. ringing endorsement there. >> i don't understand that answer. you are right there so why don't you answer yes or no? is that straight talk? i don't get it. i guess that's because i was always too stupid to say things
like that. i would go yes or no. imagine that. let's bring in mike allen. mike, harry reid, you broke the story harry reid is trying to figure a way to give elizabeth warren a position in democratic leadership. tell bus it. >> that story that katy had at the top a push for new blood. only five will come out publicly. you know there are so many senate democrats who would love new leadership. there are plenty of senate democrats who are none too excited when harry reid won re-election. so having elizabeth warren in there, in this made up job, a new fifth seat in senate leadership is a way for them to bring in these new ideas, to put a stamp on that economic populism that she talks about. what kind of signal does this send to republicans? this doesn't send any kind of a signal we want to work with you. it would be considered by
republicans to be a hostile signal but one that the white house would like and would encourage democrats who could use some encouraging. >> yeah. hey, so kacie what's it like on the hill now? everybody has come back after this, this surprise of sorts. >> yeah. >> are republicans and democrats, do you sense that peace may be breaking out? what did you pick up on the hill yesterday? >> well, i would say first of all there was a sense of celebration among republicans. i mean there's just a level of giddiness that we haven't seen in a while, all the new incoming senators were up here for orientation, joni ernst, thom tillis from north carolina they got taken out to the senator floor to be given their tour. their main concern was whether they could use iphones and blackberries on the senate
floor. we can relate. but i think mike makes a good point in that one of the things and this ties in what we were talking about earlier these democrats coming out and being skeptical of harry reid most of them are moderates. reid says i might put warren on my leadership team and that shows where reid has put himself in his caucus. he's become supportive of the liberal left wing of his caucus. if that's how it's going to go forward we're in for some pretty knock down drag out fighting. mcconnell talked with reporters and went very hard after the president on this china deal. we went quickly claiming from everything would be conciliatory to being back in partisan warfare. >> somebody else who doesn't like this move is hillary clinton. we know that she feels the ghost
of elizabeth warren in this race but to elevate her more and politico has a story up this morning about how the liberal media, the left media keeps pushing the idea of elizabeth warren and her issues, not satisfied with what hillary clinton has said so far so it's giving elizabeth warren wing not just her personally an even bigger platform. >> liberals. >> i'm so excited. liberals against liberals. >> republicans certainly have their set of internal issues and democrats have their set of internal issues and elizabeth warren represents an important and growing part of the democratic party and just to use the old joke you always want them inside the tent looking out rather than outside the tent looking in. but i think harry reid will thereabout for at least another two years. >> okay. >> good for us. >> mike allen and kasie hunt thanks a lot. still ahead -- this is a huge, huge lineup.

dramatically. >> do you have a favorite profile in here >> it's like asking about my favorite kid. i like the hillary clinton ones. a lot of them were done, were set in 2008. i was able to mine some parts of her life that hadn't been talked about. i uncovered a whole bunch of letters she wrote in college and wrote about them and i think those are fascinating. jeb bush piece i wrote in 2002. i rewrote it in putting it together and you see a time piece how technology has changed. jeb bush was the head banging conservative in 2002. >> it's remarkable. >> now what he's the establishment qu asi moderate. >> you've done it again. shocking. seriously. >> shocked and appalled. >> haley's comet twice in two

years since he died next year and i think if you look what's happening in my country, in britain, people remember 1940. but they don't remember all the stuff that made up churchill, that give him the huge courage to take that decision to fight on alone, to fight on as we did for two years. and i think it was important to tell people about all the things he did in the first world war. he went up in planes when they had barely been invented. >> he made some disastrous decision. john mecham, my favorite quote from churchill, when he's right he's right but when he was wrong turned into disastrous decisions which turned him into a joke in the 1930s. you write about him because of what he did in one year, 1940 so
remarkable. the greatest statesman britain had ever produced. why? >> because -- >> isn't that remarkable also? >> absolutely. i would defend his achievements and his huge career before 1940. he was colossally important in the '20s, all the rest of it. but he also was the only guy in 1940 who conceivably made a difference and if he hadn't been there, if chamberlain, h al if ax the other guys -- >> nobody saw that in the beginning of 1940. that would have come as a shock to almost all of his contemporaries including the king. >> that's right. he was thought to be erratic. he was thought to be a guy who made colossal mistakes, the abdication crisis. india where he totally lost the
plot. yet, he the moral courage to see that britain had to fight on, even though the day he took the decision, got the cabinet to agree to that a year later, 30,000 british men, women and children had died. you couldn't imagine a politician taking that decision today. and yet if he hadn't done it, we would have had -- >> we would have had an american from washington, d.c. who would like to talk to you, katty kay. >> boris, hi. good to see you. listen, i'm just wondering when you're promoting your book here in the united states and promoting it back in britain what's the difference? what's the reaction from americans in another book for churchill. >> churchill said in his last cabinet meeting he said two things. man is spirit and never be separated from the americans. >> in that order. >> what he meant by man and
spirit is, you know, the mysterious. don't be separated from the americans because i think good sound political advice which most leaders of our country -- >> do we love church little more than brits love churchill? we love thatcher more than brits. >> judge incincarn ate empmpbin sphere. the idea of democracy, free speech, all those things which we take for granted in britain and america they are not taken for granted in russia or china, around the world. so these are still things that are worth fighting for and worth articulating and worth remembering his role in setting up the code words, building the anglo-american alliance. that was his greatest achievement.

♪ all right. time for a special edition of sports here. steve rattner style. alabama and mississippi state face off in one of the biggest games of the college football season and steve you have some charts on college football. what your telling us today >> it seemed like a good time to take a look at college football and high school football. >> i thought you were joking. i'm so excited. >> i'm steve rattner. but some interesting stuff happening in football and a lot of it gets in blue states and red states and all that kind of stuff. if we start looking at the whole country this is a map that shows if you take all facebook use erosion how many of them have liked a college team in their home town or in their state. and you can see that in the northeast not surprisingly you see nothing. and, in fact -- >> that's incredible. >> in fact, if you take the five counties in the whole united states, the five boroughs of new
york are the least liking of football of all counties in america. >> of college football. >> college football. for now. >> that's fascinating. >> look at alabama. >> yes. let's go down south and you will see in alabama it is the state that most likes football of any state in america, 34% of all facebook users like a college team in alabama. and so why is this? a lot of it is rural versus urban. some of it is the lack of professional teams in some of these other places so who do you root for but your college team. you see some interesting anomalies. colorado has almost no college supporter but then nebraska right next door is a huge college place. you see minnesota with almost nothing and you see wisconsin with a lot and so it's very interesting as you move around the country to see the differences. >> it's interesting. i lived in both worlds.
i grew up in new jersey where nobody thought twice about college football it was the giants and jets and then i went to school, i went to college in tennessee and got totally wrapped up in the world of the sec and southern football. >> i lived in tallahassee where it was the whole -- >> let's take a look at what's happening with controversy whether football is safe or not. let's do it at the high school level. if you take a look at this chart at the high school level across the whole country since 2007 a 1.4% drop in the number of kids playing football. if you separate the country between -- >> that's fascinating. >> between states that supported obama and states that supported romney in the red states that supported romney there's been an increase in participation of 5.4%. in states that supported obama there's been a decrease of 6.6% in the number of high school kids playing football. now that's not true in every single state. arkansas which is a red state had a decline.

>> it's so amazing. >> rattner is like -- >> let's go to katty kay now with more news. >> i which i had something as exciting. nato officials say russian tanks and combat troops have been crossing over the border into eastern ukraine in the past few days. the development has renewed fears in violation of fighting and a peace agreement that has been signed in september has fallen apart. the russian minute city reject these accusations. it denies its troops entered ukraine to help pro russian separatists there this coming on the same day russia announced plans to send long range bombers on patrol missions in the gulf of mexico and caribbean. if you thought everything was stable in ukraine think again. >> what is putin's play here? what do nato officials, the eu think his long term play is? >> nato officials, the osc officials have been alateraled
of what they've seen of these columns. we've seen the pictures of tanks carrying artillery into eastern ukraine. you have to think if putin thinks the world's attention is distracted. he'll take advantage. that's what people speculated. when our backs are turned he'll take advantage. >> strange story out of turkey. united states navy is working with officials in turkey to investigate a mob assault on three u.s. sailors. the pentagon said it happened yesterday in istanbul at the hands of a left wing political group. attack was caught on camera and later posted to you tube. >> because we say you are murderers as killers, we want you to get out of our land. >> go home! go home! go home! >> go home yankee was the chant
there. joining us now, nbc news chief pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski. the video gets worse as we cut to you. we'll recue that. >> reporter: officials at the pentagon call the attack reprehensible and grateful it escalate any further than it did. these sailors were on shore leave from the uss destroyer ross that pulled into istanbul. it's the turkish group union anti-government, strongly anti-u.s. group of radicals there in turkey that were just laying for anybody to come off that ship and even though these sailors were not in uniform they were easily identifiable. at first it was just the taunts, go home yankee, murderers, killers.
but it quickly escalated into a physical confront secretary of state condoleezza rice. but if you take a close look there's some pushing and shoving but no fists were thrown. this group came prepared to make a point -- make a propaganda point they could immediately post on youtube. they came with balloons, water balloons filled instead with red paint to signify blood but the most disconcerting part is this what you're seeing now they took out plastic bags and momentarily placed them over the heads as if there was a symbolic capture as we've seen so regrettably by ti isis forces there in iraq and syria. now the sailors themselves conducted themselves properly. they didn't escalate the situation. nevertheless because of all of this future ships that put into turkey, their crews will probably not be allowed to take liberty in istanbul.
>> we have rough relations right now with turkey, probably the worst relations we've had with that country in, god, i don't know, my lifetime. this certainly doesn't -- this doesn't help even though it wasn't a group of islamists. it doesn't help. >> the current government in istanbul has probably been following the script that this radical group would promote. they are not necessarily cooperating with the u.s. on all levels and this group is not only anti-u.s. but anti-turkish government there in istanbul. they are grown out of some 16 universities there in turkey. almost harkens back to the '60s and anti-war demonstrations here in the u.s. but, again, people here think that this entire episode was not intended to harm these sailors but to get the propaganda they wanted to display all over the
internet. >> glad we could help them out. thank you so much. >> those three sailors were not injured. got back to the ship. how scary. you don't know where that's headed. people putting bags over your head and roughing you up. >> the turkish government should be more concerned opinion if they are not cooperating they should be more concerned. if president obama knows what he's doing and his foreign policy leaders know what they are doing, we have to make turkey make some tough decision and make some tough decisions quickly. the president wants to be everybody's friend and doesn't want to do anything that can be seen as provoking. but turkey is either going to have to decide that they are our ally or not. if not we have to double down and help the kurds. >> turkey is a member of nato. they have committed to be our ally. if they want to going other direction they need to make some choices. >> some politics here at home. for the first time both the senate and house will vote on the keystone xl pipe mostly
because of a razor thin senate race a runoff in louisiana. bill cassidy and mary landrieu in that runoff after they finished very tightly in the general election. both are sponsoring bills in their respective chambers trying to show they are delivering for their home state. senator landrieu has branded herself as critical to louisiana as chair of the senate energy committee, a committee republican leadership says cassidy would join if he's elected. landrieu face an uphill re-election battle even more so after the party's campaign committee pulled tv money ahead of her runoff. >> if taking my name off this bill helps it to pass go right ahead. this is not about credit. it is not about glory. it is not about politics. it is about getting our work done. >> national democrats have pulled their ad from your campaign. you're leaders are not standing here with you today. our lost cause? >> no, i don't believe i am.
of course i've stood against my leadership when i've had to and this is one of the times. my leadership, at least the two or three that are elected have not been strong keystone supporters but the fact of the matter is we have 15 members of our caucus that are. this is another example of many that i can give you where i've had to stand up to my caucus and have done it. now having won two elections in runoffs like this i wouldn't say -- i wouldn't count on me being a lost cause. >> so nicole we were talking, they are both going to bring it up in the respective houses. do you think the pipeline will be approved? >> it will be approved democrats are running against this white house and against democratic senate leadership. it confirms the polls that are out this morning showing national democratic brand is at an all time low. in part because of this. there's popular support in this country for this. president obama's state department said the
environmental impact is negl ig ible. >> first thing democrats do is they push keystone. if i were tom styer -- >> senate democrats want to save mary land draw. they have another election to fight in two years. having one more incumbent makes it easier to get that. they are willing to throw keystone overboard. >> can i ask you a question, just throw a question out. why is it that, you know, the environmentalists seem to be one
of the biggest supporter of the left, maybe the biggest supporters of the left, why has that issue fallen flat? why has that issue fallen so flat with american voters when it's so important to a very important wing of the democratic party. >> should be important to all of us. >> i'm just asking the whys. the political realities. always on the bottom. the question is why? >> my answer, you know, this is what my perspective, my answer is because i think the average american does care about the environment but they care more about their wallet and right now their wallets are getting thinner. jobs are tough. isis, you have ebola these are all issues. >> i think the democrats sell it as a zero sum proposition. i think what the public wants is clean air and clean water and they want to use new technologies to get there. they don't want to sacrifice jobs.
>> it's also because you can't see it changing your life today, tomorrow next week it might be 100 years. the pocketbook that affects you right now can you buy groceries today. the environment, although it should concern all of us is viewed i think something off somewhere on the horizon. >> it's seen as a zero sum game by a lot of people on the far left. not barack obama. barack obama, his approach at least what he said is what i've said all along, all of the above. we want to be the top oil producer, and we want to be the top natural gas producer and we want to take that money to invest in clean energy. >> clean coal. >> to make the transition pup said clean coal not me. i'm not running in west virginia any time soon. but it's not an all or nothing. >> it's not an all or nothing. >> did you get paid to say clean coal. >> i'm just saying the republican message on the environment is what the public is attracted to more than the
democratic message because people especially in coal country want to hear that you're going to wipe out their state economy but you'll do it in a environmentally sensitive way. >> people one kentucky say they want clean coal and then fight every epa regulation to achieve clean coal. let's put that aside. >> my point, steve is the democrats have to figure out how to do both. or we'll keep losing elections which is fine to me. >> to me there's a place in the middle. people on the left are absolutist. they don't want to burn another gallon of gas or ton of coal. they don't even want nuclear. people on the right want to burn coal left and right. the sensible center the all of the above strategy is gradual transition. there's no free lunch. it cost money to bring in these renewables. costs money to substitute natural gas for coal. >> that's where most americans are. the middle. let's bring in from capitol
hill, democratic representative from illinois, congressman great to talk to you. let's talk first about the question about the environment. what is the sensible mid signal why is it this issue isn't resonating with americans as much as it did say in 2005 and 2006. >> look i think when they stripped the environmental protection last year they lost a lot of support. i think we can do both. obviously the labor movement wants the jobs. the environmentalists want to keep our environment. each of them are doing their jobs. can't we just reach a middle in which we can preserve america's pristine environment. it may cost more but still achieve energy, more energy independence. let's pay a little more today so that tomorrow we can have a better more beautiful america for children. >> let's talk about yesterday, the two issues that really dominated talk on capitol hill where keystone and immigration. on the immigration tissue
president is going to unveil, i understand, a ten point plan for his executive order, republicans are talking about fighting it. what's the sensible mid there'll? >> here's what i think. the president should act in a bold manner, in a generous manner and he should act quickly and swiftly. i've always said that the blessings of thanksgiving should be bountiful this year for millions of immigrants that have been waiting for the congress to act. joe, you know that i stood with paul ryan in chicago, with judge carter in san antonio and congressman in bakersville. i stood with republicans. when they said hey, luis they can't all become citizens right away i said okay. when they said we have to do it in a piecemeal manner. i said okay. every time we set the menu, we set the table they walked away. they keep talking about this poison well.
joe, you want to know something? they double down on poisoning the well. >> do you think on the democratic side because jose belard believes this and said it repeatedly that democrats were hurt because the president didn't move faster on immigration reform before the election. >> look what happened. the president decided to make a political calculation. he said i'm going to delay what i've been saying. okay so june 30th the president got a call from borne. boehner said we're not moving on immigration reform. president said i'm going act as i said i would in the absence of any action of the congress of the united states. he said he would do it by the end of summer. by the end of summer i'm going to wait until after election. you don't get good public policy and what you get is cynicism of the public when you put politics ahead. we lost the senate anyway and infuriated, angered
disillusioned lots of voters that might well have come out to vote in florida, in the florida election and in the colorado election. not to talk about other elections that might have been close. so here's what i say. let's stop the politics, put it aside. the republicans really double down during the election. you know, secure the border, secure the border because the mexicans are coming to take away our jobs and bringing crime but not only that they poison the welby winning elections to the senate, by saying ebola is also coming through and isis. so they really poisoned that well. let's move forward. i say to my republican colleagues i'm willing to sit down at the table and work with you and we still have time to do it, joe. >> let's hope you work something out. congressman gutierrez thank you so much. >> still ahead on "morning joe," actor john lithgow back on broad

♪ what the president needs to do is give immediate and significant relief to those families that are being wrenched apart and living in fear. i'm proud to join my colleagues in that request. and i will be proud to support the president of the united states in acting in a big, bold manner. and then work -- >> this was congressman seven chip hoyer yesterday on capitol hill calling for an executive
order by the president on immigration. he was joined by military veterans, some of whom who say despite their service their families are being deported and the minority whip joins us now. steny, we see this in politics all the time where people play it safe. the president puts up the executive order because he wants to help democrats running for the senate in north carolina and in georgia and in arkansas and in alaska and in louisiana and then by trying to play it too safe you get the worst of both worlds you end up losing the states anyway. louisiana is still out. that's an uphill battle. you upset your base. it seems like the president has no reason to hold back now, does he? >> i think that's accurate, but further this may well be a forcing action. 18 months ago the senate pass ad comprehensive immigration bill, supported by the chamber of commerce, by the afl-cio, by growers and farm workers and faith groups. it had broad support, 70% of the
public indicated they thought we ought to fix the immigration system. so this may be a forcing action and give john boehner who joe i think really wants to pass, he said he wants to pass a comprehensive immigration bill, i believe speaker boehner, i think he's very sincere in this effort. this may be a forcing action which will give him the opportunity. >> let's explain that to viewers because i tried to bring it up earlier that this actually would allow john boehner and others, republicans who want immigration reform to be passed. you call it a forcing action. great way to put it. right now if they don't want to pass immigration reform they do nothing, nothing happens. if the president as if executive order then they are forced to do something. their own form of immigration reform which will be a lot less but their own form of immigration reform. >> right, joe. it may give speaker bone terrify opportunity to say to his members look the president has done an executive order but that's not permanent law and we can change that and make the law
if we pass a comprehensive bill. and every republican leader that i talked to said the immigration system is broke. it's not a situation where action is not needed. everybody concludes action is needed. i'm hopeful that neither side, however, whether it's keystone today or immigration reform says look if you do this then i'm not going negotiate, i won't compromise, i won't sit down and talk. what we heard in the election was an american public deeply frustrated, angry and saying hey, you guys need to sit down and get the work of our country done and help make our lives better. i think we ought to all listen to that. after all everybody shares two things in common in the congress of the united states. number one, we're all americans. number, two we've been sent here by our constituents, our neighbors to try to make things better, and i think we can do that if we work together and i think speaker boehner wants to do that. >> all right. we have a question for you
steny. >> steny, steve rattner here. >> hi, steve. >> just to broaden it out a tiny bit one of the things that impeded progress before and i'm not trying to be partisan and blame republicans but we know john boehner couldn't deliver his caucus on a lot of important matters including the budgetary compromise and things like that. some people feel this election may make it harder you had some senior more moderate republicans, more conservative ones arrive. how do you assess the state of the republicans in the house and the ability for the democrats assuming they are willing to compromise to do business with them. >> well, i think first of all, steve, speaker boehner has a larger working majority. so a small group of people will be less able to hold him hostage to an ideologically rigid standard. i think that's number one. number two, i think the fact that when this legislation passes the house it has a shot at being considered seriously on the senate side because senator
mcconnell will be the majority leader. so that i think there will be, frankly, i hope, greater sense much responsibility. look this, is real. this is not just a political message. this is policy that we're passing that may well be sent to the president. the president may not sign it but at least it will have a responsibility and they just won't be able to blame senator reid. >> katty kay is in washingtoner and has a question for you. >> congressman, i was wondering how this would work on immigration reform. let's say the president passes something by executive order, congress passes its own bill which is less ambitious than the president's, which then prevails? because the president said if they can get a bill to my desk that would be the law it would override the executive order. if it doesn't include legal status for people who have children here who are american citizens then what would happen? >> first of all, we have a template, as you know. the senate pass ad bipartisan bill with about a third of the
republicans in the senate voting for it. it's not as if we're starting with a clean slate. we do have an exemp lar of what happened bipartisan support. if the president wes to the bill it doesn't become law his executive order stays in place. but i would hope that the president, speaker boehner, majority leader mcconnell and all of us would understand that we have to come to an agreement. it's not our way or their way it is an agreed way and i think that's how it will work. i hope. and i think that's what's the american people expect. so, i think the republicans hopefully will take some of what the president suggest. i think we and the president should take what the republicans suggest and fix the system that everybody says is broken. >> all right. steny hoyer, thank you so much. great talking with you. why is it steny looks ten years younger than when i worked with

today's celebrity culture is that not everybody stands up under the lights. this happens in politics too. not only does she stand up you love her more. the thing she does when the cameras are off of her are as astounding as when she's in the spotlight. i saw her a week ago with young fans and there wasn't a single young girl she didn't stop and take a picture with. they all have their iphones and their moms there are. she's real deal. she's very special. her legacy is on two tracks. you call her a rock star. >> when i say a rock star that's the highest compliment. >> you mean it in the literal sense. >> baeptleatles, stones i don't that to female vocalists that my 11-year-old daughter loves. that's the remarkable thing. i was talking to my 26-year-old son about taylor swift and, you

leadership in a specially created role. senator reid is promising to work with mcconnell and other republicans and is even open to allowing more votes in the lame duck session. >> i saw firsthand how strategy of destruction was debilitating to our system. i have no desire to engage in that manner. we move around. and change. our duty to help working american families never will. senate democrats are ready to work in good faith. with their republican counterparts. whether it is today, tomorrow, january. no matter when it is. to help the middle class. when we do that, we help all our citizenry. >> at least on wednesday, five democratic senators would not commit to backing senator reid for leader. and republicans are already making him a top target for 2016. nevada's other senator, republican dean heller, is urging governor brian sandoval to run.
sandoval says he's focused on being governor. >> nicole, if brian sandoval runs, he's going to win by 20, 30 points. i was one of the few people predicting harry reid would win in 2010. sandoval, if that guy runs, it's over. democrats don't want harry reid. who first of all has become the face of obstructionism. a lot of people were probably laughing when he was saying that. you could say tea partiers are in the house if you're a democrat but harry reid will be fighting for his political life. he should be done. democrats would be stupid to let this guy lead them over the next two year, wouldn't they? >> i love what mary landrieu said. she's making it a political asset. she's basically running against the senate leadership. running against harry reid. if she is successful -- if she's successful, i think she's weaken him even further. >> that's a big question, willie, is she going to be successful. it looks like there's a fight. key stone, which by the way, would create about 45,000
jobs -- >> the obama state department said would not have the environmental impact -- >> saying it creates 45,000 jobs and it's not going to a bad environmental impact. apparently democrats are going to try to help. >> hemming and hawing on for six years. for the first time, both the senate and house will vote on the keystone xl pipeline. mostly because of that razor thin senate race in louisiana. cassidy and landrieu are in a runoff after finishing very close in the general. both are sponsoring bills in their respective chambers trying to show that they are delivering for their home state. senator landrieu has branded herself as critical to louisiana as chair of the senate energy committee. a committee republican leadership says cassidy would join if elected. and landrieu faces an uphill re-election battle. even more so after the party's campaign exicommittee pulled itv
money ahead of her runoff. >> if taking my name off of this bill helps it to pass, go right ahead. this is not about credit. it is not about glory. it is not about politics. it is about getting our work done. >> mary, national democrats have pulled their ads from your campaign. are you a lost cause? >> no, i don't believe that i am. and, of course, i've stood against my leadership when i've had to. this is one of the times. my leadership, at least the two or three that are elected, have not been strong keystone supporters. the fact of the matter is, we've got 15 members of our caucus that are. so this is just another example of many i can give you where i've had to stand up to my caucus and have done it. now, having won two elections in runoffs like this, i wouldn't say -- i wouldn't count on me being a lost cause. i'll just underscore that. >> is barack obama, steve
rattner, his -- the suggestion of the white house that he would veto a keystone bill that his state department says creates a lot of good jobs and doesn't harm the environment, is that an example of how big money in politics is irrationally distorting the political process? >> in this case big money from the environmental -- >> from the left, who are the biggest funders of the left. >> this has become an unbelievably emotional issue. yes, there are some jobs created. yes, it would help us on the energy front. it's become a touch point. it's become a symbolic -- >> i guess my big question is why would you not do it. yes, jobs are not going to spring forth forever. it's not going to -- you know, create a major impact in oil supply anywhere. why would you not do it if it's 50,000 new jobs? >> because what you've got is a test of will between the environmental groups who basically -- >> i'm talking about logically. why logically would you not do this? forget about the ideology of the
extremists. >> is the only reason you wouldn't do it is if you genuinely thought there was an environmental concern. or stopping fossil fuels. >> so is there a down the middle study that suggests that keystone is going to harm the environment? >> well, there are actually studies that show that keystone would help the environment in the following sense. right now, that oil is being transported by trucks and by railroads which consume more energy and are more environmentally dangerous than putting it into a pipeline. >> exactly. >> the state department echoed that -- >> no, barack obama's state department. that's the ill logic of this. it's become a stop pit plid call issue that people on the far left have decided to make a cause when there's just no logic attached to it. and people on the far right are talking about how it's going to change the world. >> this is just the technical point. the refineries that we have down on the gulf coast are used to
processing heavy oil coming from venezuela. they're not as well equipped to process the oil we're now producing in north dakota. this pipeline would bring heavy oil down from canada to those refineries. it will really help out a lot. >> chief white house correspondent for politico mike allen and on capitol hill msnbc political correspondent kacie hunt. we saw you ask a question of senator landrieu there. >> she's got the answer of the day out of senator landrieu and i loved hearing her say, you know, i've been through a couple of runoffs before, don't count me out. i thought that was a question -- >> always gets the good answer. it was a fascinating day up there. we were just saying after six years of kind of sitting on the shelf and being on the limbo, boom, to the floor in one day. >> if you talk to mary landrieu supporters in particular, they would say this move she made ticked off some democrats and some republicans.
republicans do not want to give her a win on this. that's why you saw that last-minute maneuvering in the house. her opponent bill cassidy's name on the house version of the bill. on the democratic side, there was a lot of tension up here yesterday. there was a tense moment between mary landrieu and senator chuck schumer who of course is a leader among the democrats. this puts a lot of democrats in a tough spot. the question at this point is whether or not mary landrieu can get the votes she would need to push this through the senate. whether or not they will help her find those 60 votes. could end up being a loss from that perspective. >> we see five democrats have already come out and said they may not support harry reid, now, what that usually means there's about 20 or 30 more that are saying the same thing off camera or away from reporters. do you sense or do you have any reason to believe there's a growing ground swell to put harry reid out of his leadership
position or is it limited to these five people? >> look, i think that, you know, harry reid not coming out of this -- the majority leader of the caucus would be a huge surprise. i do think that -- supporting either one of these, either mitch mcconnell or harry reid has become toxic to a certain extent. the race that she just went through, he became absolutely toxic. so i think on the republican side also i talked to ted cruz yesterday and asked him whether or not he planned to support mcconnell and his answer was to look at me and say "call my press office" so ringing endorsement there. >> i don't understand that answer. you are right there, so why don't you just answer yes or no. is that straight talk? i don't get it. i was always too stupid to say stuff like that. i'd go yes or no. >> imagine that. >> mike allen now. mike, harry reid, you broke the
story reid is trying to figure out a way to give out war beren position in democratic leadership. >> that story catty had at the top from politico reflects this push for new blood. there's probably only five that will come out publicly. you know, there are so many senate democrats who would love new leadership. there are plenty of senate democrats who are none too excited when harry reid won re-election. having elizabeth warren in there in this made-up job, a new fifth seat in senate leadership, is a way for then to bring in these new ideas, to put a stamp on that economic pop u lisism she talks about. what kind of signal does this send to republicans? it would be considered by republicans to be a hostile signal, but one the white house would like and would encourage democrats who are -- who could

here? this is not your normal iphone case. what is that? >> this is my favorite innovation. it's just plastic. usually plastic is made by breaking down petroleum. in this case, found a way to use enzymes to combine the carbon from methane emissions with air to create a blast take looks like other plastics and lasts just as long. instead of emitting carbon into the atmosphere during the process, it's actually taking it out of the atmosphere and using it as a sync. >> turning a negative into a positive. impact of that could be great. >> we produce 660 billion pounds of plastic a year in society. if you turn that into something that can store carbon, that's pretty huge. >> i'm not good at science. i'm a republican.

it. >> not literally. >> on stage with bob. he has fa effect on me. >> it sounds a little bit like garp which made you laugh but at the same time was painful and tragic. >> to me the best stuff is comedy hidden inside of very serious work and vice versa. albi uses humor brilliantly. we have show-stopping laughs in the middle of this incredibly angst ridden play. >> speaking of -- music's going up which means we're supposed to go to break. i'm really bad at taking cues. that was the first time we saw robin williams beyond mork or at least the first time and even at that moment i was stunned by his range, his sensibility. it was nothing i expected. you could really tell, what was that, 1980 maybe, '81. could tell right away, he was so
