good morning. i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. a former marine convicted of killing american sniper author chris kyle and another man faces life in prison. lawyers for eddie ray routh say they will appeal. routh admitted shooting kyle and chad littlefield at a firing range two years ago, but as adriana diaz reports, late last night jurors rejected claims that he was insane. >> reporter: two hours and 25 minutes after nine days of deliberations in this courtroom behind me to decide the fate of eddie ray routh. >> we've waited two years for god to get justice for us on behalf of our son. >> reporter: judy little field fought back tears of joy after a judge sentenced eddie ray routh for life for murdering her son chad along with chris kyle on a shooting range in texas. >> we the jury find eddie ray routh guilty. >> reporter: jurors took just over two hours to give the verdict during which his wife recounted the day back in 2013. >> that we loved each other and gave our kids a hug like we always did. >> reporter: the panel of ten women and two men show as video surrounding and captured eddie. the defense argues he was not guilty by reason of insanity. they said he had schizophrenia and was having a delusion when he opened fire on kyle and little field. >> reporter: prosecutors say he did no right from wrong despite any issues. >> this man shot down two men in cold blood in our county. >> reporter: the defense asked for the case to be moved from pretrial history largely create by the film "american sniper" based on kyle's best-selling memoir. they now plan to appeal. routh's lawyers are expected to appeal. now, before the trial they had to have the case moved to a different jurisdiction because of the familiarity of the case here in this area. adriana deyasz cbs news stephenville, texas. now to the weather and the winter that will not give up. this morning another winter blast of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is spreading across the south to the atlantic coast. two to four inches of snow is expected in the atlanta area. most schools are closed there today as are state offices. states of emergency have been declared in georgia and alabama, and the governor of north carolina is thinking a more snow is also expected in new england by this morning. it's been so cold in maine that many lobster boats are stuck in the ice. meteorologist eric fish e of our boston station wbz has more on the latest winter storm. >> well yet another southern storm under way here as we head through. winter storm warnings stretching from texas right across the north carolina. this is going to put dom some pretty significant snow. it starts this morning. dallas area and southern arkansas. by this evening it's tracking its way across mississippi, alabama, and georgia right around the commute time. birmingham, atlanta, right on the line. we could be talking significant snow in the city. heading overnight the snow overspreading north carolina. we'll see some of the biggest totals. it will be brushing the southern jersey area before it moves out to sea. snow totals we start to see this dark blue. we're talking up to six inches of snow potentially. you notice it comes right through the northern parts of mississippi, alabama, and georgia. here we could be talking over a half foot and certainly some totals in north carolina including around the triangle. it could be over 6 inches total before it departs. after it more snow moving in. highs. you'll feel it first across the front range of the rockies into the midwest. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. southwest airlines grounded 128 of its planes because it miss add deadline for its safety inspection. it had to cancel about 0 flights yesterday and expected to capsle another 19 today. the groundings involve about one-fifth of southwest's fleet. the faa agrees to a plan allowing the planes back in the air as long as the inspections are complete within five days. federal investigator will be on the scene this morning of a fiery crash of a southern california commuter train. it slammed into a truck and derald in oxnard about 60 miles west of los angeles. the accident injured dozens of commuters. police arrested the drivers of the truck. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: authorities began removing the wreckage of a commuter train that struck a train in oxnard. the train derailed. >> i grabbed onto a pole. >> reporter: fred maloney climbed on top of one of the passengers cars to help. >> it was very quiet. one man was standing up pointing to a lady. >> reporter: he showed pictures from inside. >> the lady was lying between the seats. >> reporter: 28 were transported to the hospital, four critically including the engineer. the engineer spotted the vehicle on the tracks and was able to slow down. the truck caught on fire on impact but firefighters quickly put out the flame. the police say the 54-year-old driver from yuma arizona, took a wrong turn and took off down the tracks and abandoned. they found him about a mile and a half from the scene. police arrested hinn on a felony hit and run. >> when you're involved in a hit-and-run accident the law requires you to remain at the scene. in this case id did not happen. >> reporter: metro said the train was designed to better protect the passengers. it would have been much worse without it. >> reporter: passengers say they're grateful they're survived. >> i feel blessed, i'm lucky, and it could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: danielle nottingham cbs news, oxnard california. >> the truck driver has been described as jose ramirez. his attorney said he tried to free his truck from the tracks and onto fled to get help. the fairfax country police -- county virginia police department says daniel rosen was arrested at his home yesterday. police say he tried to arrange to have sex with a minor over the innert, but rosen was communicating with a detective posing as a minor. he's listed as a director of counterterrorism for the state department. the attorney says trayvon martin's family is distraught that george zimmerman won't face federal charges. the justice didn't says there isn't enough evidence to make a case against the former neighborhood watch volunteer. he said he killed the unarmed black teen in self-defense. the attorney benjamin crump was with the family when they got the news. >> they were heartbroken. they knew it was going to happen but just hearing it, that an unarmed person would not be held criminally liable. >> a florida jury found zimmerman not guilty of murder in 2013. the senate is moving closer to a deal to fund the department of homeland security and avoid a partial shutdown. rbs say they're willing to vote on a stripped bill. house republicans meet today to determine their strategy. republicans say they'll keep up the fight for the keystone xl pipeline pipeline. president obama vetoed a bill tuesday that would have approved cover strukz of the project. the $8 billion pipeline would carry oil from canada to gulf coast refineries. coming up on the "morning news," damage control. the head of veterans affairs clears the air
