necrophiliac. 10 hours passed before officials notified authorities he had escaped. by then he had boarded a plane to maui and after a commercial plane to san jose.>> there was a breakdown in communications and safety protocols. we don't know whether it was purposeful or not.>> reporter: staff members at the hospital have been relieved of their duties while the investigation continues. authorities have charged randall with escaping from the facility. something which could send him to prison.>> this is something that was not done by somebody that was suffering from any sort of mental defect or disability. we intend to press that argument with the court when he is brought back.>> reporter: he will appear before a judge in california before being extradited back to hawaii. and ex-convict found guilty of first-degree murder for what the prosecutor said was the cold-blooded killing of a popular ice cream vendor. he was shot and killed two years ago with children standing nearby waiting to buy ice cream. jurors deliberated for less than a day before delivering their verdict against -- lopez. he faces a state prison term of 45 years to life when he is sentenced in
