>> we had the rain this morning. we get -- we get here so early that sometimes i think that what happened at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning when we get here, people don't even know about. right now it's okay on the roads. this morning it was raining and there were a lot of accidents early. it seems to be drying off. i don't see any rain at all. it's a beautiful morning and the traffic is backed up for a 15 to 20-minute delay at the toll plaza. and we're also looking at a commute in san francisco that looks good on northbound and southbound 101 heading down the peninsula. there's a new crash in san mateo. southbound 101 at highway 92. it's early enough that it's not causing a big delay. and if you want to avoid the whole thing you can use 280. 6:02 and let's go back to the desk. actually, speaking of that wet weather -- i always forget this -- some of the wet weather is moving through the south bay. ktvu's janine de la vega is live in milpitas with conditions on the outside. is it still raining where you are? >> reporter: no. it's stopped in the last hour. it's really died down. if you look behind me, cars are traveling on the roads that are wet. so it's still slick for the morning commute. and that's because of this. here's video we took. this was probably taken about 4 a.m. in the morning in north san jose. the rain started coming down and pounding pockets of the peninsula and up north. one of our photographers shot some video of an accident on his way in to work in oakland. three cars were involved and no one was injured. it was not much of a traffic impact but one of several accidents. i've been monitoring the chp's website and six accidents crossed in the last hour. it's unknown if it's because of the slick roads. it's supposed to stop completely by sunrise but not the wind. there's a high wind advisory on the benicia bridge. in san jose we were feeling the occasional gusts, no consistent wind. if you're headed to work, bring a light jacket but no need for an umbrella. and it feels calm. it's just right now in the south bay, just wet roads and nothing is coming down. and i'm not feeling my wind right now either. >> we'll check in again. now to the sierra where there's more snow headed there. this is video from interstate 80. the latest storm is expected to bring 5 inches of new snow. be sure to bring the chains. chains are required on interstate 80. the snow is welcome for many resorts. and reno has announced they are extending operations through may. what a change from the past four years. a high surf advisory is in effect at bay area beaches. some areas could see waves as high as 16 feet. avoid turning your back to the ocean and also avoid fishing from rocks. developing news from japan. you told us about the 6.2 magnitude quake that hit the southern part of japan. >> it was a strong earthquake that hit near the city of temana 30 minutes ago near the east china sea and the korea strait. we are getting conflicting reports. japanese authorities saying it was a 6.4. there's no doubt that it was a strong one. >> and we're getting pictures in. look at the damage. this is inside of a store. look at the shelves tipped over and products all over the floor. and you can see this is someone running through a restaurant. >> and take a look at the lights, they are swaying. this is after the fact i'm assuming. >> similar to what we saw after the napa earthquake. these are our first pictures of the damage. we haven't seen major damage. the story always changes. it's very early. it's at least a 6.0 quake. the good news is that there's no danger of a tsunami. but we'll track it throughout the morning. turning now to sports. remember the warriors just a couple of years ago. for a lot of years, they didn't win half of their games. >> the golden state warriors stand alone with 73 wins taking their place in the annals of the nba. >> they own the record for the the most victories in a single regular season. last night they beat up the memphis grizzlies 125-up with hundred four. steph curry made 10 three pointers. christien kafton is on the floor at oracle arena and they are preparing for warriors to defend the nba titles. >> preparation are underway for the big game. let's talk for a moment about last night. you and i were talking. unbelievable. you and i are still tired and a lot of people stayed up late to watch the game. the warriors handily beating memphis. and steph curry unbelievable and giving a lot of credit to his teammates. >> we have oyster identity of how we play. and obviously, shooting at a high level. moving the ball, everybody has a role. and we have fun doing it. >> absolutely incredible team effort and the team did look like they were having a lot of fun. steph curry scoring 46 points on his own. the hard work is still ahead and the playoffs are just around the corner. and the warriors learned who they'll be playing. the houston rockets will be here at oracle arena this saturday. last night's game is still on fans' minds. >> the 400 threes plus the 73. even though the team -- all the pressure on them, young men, it would be an overwhelming moment. but the coolness and calmness of them was very, very impressive. >> houston now on the warriors' radar. houston winning last night over the sacramento kings, and we did a quick search and there are still tickets available. the cheapest are $214. and those $214 tickets will be way up there. that would still be a great way to watch the warriors play. and an amazing night for basketball all the way around. a lot of people had to switch back and forth between the warriors and the lakers. it was amazing. kobe bryant scoring 60 points on his farewell performance. and a lot of great basketball ahead. >> how does it feel to be on the court this morning? inside the store. members of various unions from around the bay area. and this is all part of the fight for 15 campaign. a series of protests happening in about 300 cities nationwide. and organizers are calling for better pay and union rights for workers everywhere. and i want to bring in a local worker from the bay area. guadalupe salazar. why are you and others out here? >> because we want 15 now and we also want a union, union rights, bigot. respect at our workplaces. and we want to be able to move out if we want to. about not having enough money to move out of our places if we want to move out. >> how big a victory was it to see the governor of california sign a bill to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. >> it was a huge victory but we also want 15 now. and the union now. because the big corporations, they can pay that money now if they want to. >> guadalupe salazar, thank you for your time this morning. and i think we're still showing a live picture. and protesters are trying to make their way inside this particular mcdonald's store. and that did not happen. and now you have a crowd of at least 100 people, demonstrators who will continue marching down market street. there's a rat. one of the organizers tells me that represents mcdonald's in this particular case. and this is all part of the fight for 15. this is a series of protests happening in cities across the country throughout the day today and again, 300 cities, and you can see this group of protesters is on the move. we're watching as the san francisco police officers get organized and they'll walk alongside this group as they make their way down market street. and we'll continue to follow this demonstration and give you updates as we get them from the city. >> an ongoing live raleigh calling for a higher minimum wage. we'll check back with you later. tensions flared at a town hall meeting where police and community members clashed over a shooting of a homeless man. dozens of angry people packed the union hall. 45-year-old luis gongora was shot and killed. he was holding a 13-inch knife and would not put it down, police say. some witnesses say he lunged at officers, and others say the knife was in his waistband and the police overreacted. >> you are telling people this is what we think happened. how can you say that, chief, when the investigation is still ongoing. >> friends say gongora became homeless when he was evicted from his apartment. they believe police should have spent more time trying to deescalate the situation. and the family may sue the city and the police department. the justice for mario woods coalition wants a civil rights investigation of san francisco police. the deaths of mario woods, perez lopez, and -- a couple of examples of excessive use of force by police. they say an independent investigation is needed to uncover whether there's a pattern of discriminatory practices. in a letter to kamala harris. the group highlights what they call a new series of homophobic and racist texts between police officers publicized by the -- george gascon. the letter says a review by the u.s. department of justice is a step in the right direction. and it is still lacking because it only provides nonbinding recommendations. bart's board of directors will consider a plan to punish seat hogs. if approved the rules would only apply during weekday hours. violators could be fined up to $500 for repeat offenses. lyft is launching their -- in san diego, denver, philadelphia, newark, and new jersey. those are the fastest growing a younger generation. and he's willing to at least try out the idea. he thinks millennials could be better served at a movie theater. when you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone and not ruin the movie. they hear please cut off your left arm above the elbow. that's now how they live their life. some of the possibilities include perhaps something certain sections of the theater where texting is allowed or having the entire theater text friendly. held like to see millennials go to the movies with the same intensity as baby boomers did during their lives. for everybody he says he would like to see amc having a better loyalty program. this is one of the topics do you like people texting on your cell phone or using a cell phone during the movie? we'll pose this question on social media and we'll talk to people in the streets and see how they feel. maybe they'll go to a different movie theater than amc. >> and this all has to do with the bottom line. fewer people are going to the movies than they did in the past. and they want to keep the people and the money coming in. >> when i was reading this variety article, gasia, he's not a typical hollywood type. he's a newcomer. and bringing
