the way up to the north bay. i will tell you it looks like one little cell wants to hang out over medesto. we do have cloudy skies. some rain will pick up as the system gets closer. it's not the most organized system i have ever seen. a lot of this may not be showing up on radar. it could be a bit below the beam but it's cloudy skies and rain working its way up from south to north. there was that light rain for san jose it looks like it let up a little bit. 50s on the temps to near 60- degrees. everybody is pretty close. heaviest rain looks to be to the north along the coast. sal, i think we will get through most of the morning commute but there is light rain out there. we have seen some wet roads. we will keep an eye on all the commutes. when it does rain, it tends to be correlated with more crashes. let's take a look at westbound 80. as you can see traffic is moving along pretty well heading out to the mccarthur maze. there are no major problems along the way. 60 minutes is pretty good. about as good as you get to drive that stretch and the average speeds are up there. no problems on the span itself getting into san francisco. one of the heaviest commutes is livermore valley and right now traffic on the altamont pass a little bit slow but the actual commute on 580 looks good. 5:02 let's go back to the desk. work crews are speeding up their efforts to fix that big sink hole in san francisco. ktvu alex savidge is joining us live from san francisco. you have more on this project and other ways the bay area is bracing for today's rain. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, to you. the rush is on to fix the huge sink hole in san francisco before more rain arrives later on today. we will show you the progress crews have been making out here. you can see it's quite an under taking here. as it turns out, this huge sink hole was caused by a broken storm drain line nearby and all of that water eroded the sand underneath the road and that is what led to the collapse. the 20-foot by 20-foot crater opened up during wednesday's rainstorm here at the intersection of sixth and lake in the city's richmond district. the sink hole runs about nine feet deep. gas and water surface was restored to the neighborhood late yesterday and crews will spend today trying to fix sewer lines in this area. the work to repair the big sink hole probably won't be completed though in its entirety until sometime early next week. in the meantime, there is quite a bit of storm damage up in marin county to tell you about. flood waters seeping through the front door of the champagne salon and day spa in tiburon. they have quite a bit of repair work to do up in that area. bring you back out here live. all around the bay area. lots of cleanup to do. obviously this is one of the biggest projects around. they will try to get things patched up as much as possible before the next system arrives later on today. more rain on the way and folks still drying out and cleaning controversial cases involving police using deadly force in ferguson, missouri and new york city. for a second straight night there were demonstrations from new york all the way here to the bay area. protestors walked across the brooklyn bridge carrying symbolic black caskets. be phoenix, arizona is the latest city dealing with the white police officer shooting and killing an unarmed african american man. last night 150 people marched through the city to protest tuesday's shooting which began with the officer trying to break up a suspected drug deal. after chasing the suspect to his apartment, the officer opened fire thinking the suspect was reaching for a gun. he was putting his hands in his pockets to conceal a pill bottle. >> it's a problem that is happening all over america and now it's so close to home it's kind of hard to ignore. >> the 34-year-old man leaves behind four daughters. while he was not armed, police said they did find marijuana and a semi automatic handgun in his car. it used to be home to several hundred homeless people in san jose but they have been forced to move out. many of them watched as their belongings were thrown into garbage trucks. the city of san jose has been working for the last 18 months with nonprofit organizations for finding alternative housing. already 144 people have found housing while others have temporary shelters. but many more still have no place to go. >> we're already homeless. and now we are displaced homeless. they don't want us on the streets. it's illegal to be homeless yet they are taking this away from us. >>as for all of that debris stacked up in the jungle, it will take two weeks to clear it out. happening now it's definitely beginning to look a lot like the holidays across the bay area. tara moriarty is on a holiday tour of some of the fun things happening in san francisco. your first event is something that people up and down the peninsula can enjoy. >> reporter: that is right. this is the cal train holiday train. and joining me live is christine dunn who is with cal train. you have this all decked out with lights. it must have taken a lot of time to decorate. >> yes. our volunteers start until october. we are running the train saturday and sunday night. we will be stopping at four stations on the peninsula. the main purpose is to collect toys. so we want everybody to come out and see the train and bring a toy. >> great. and there is no extra fee or anything like that. >> no, it's all free. we have live entertainment in the stations as well as on board the train. of course san tam claus will be on the train as well. >> reporter: you guys also have a band and a choir. >> this is the salvation army band. traditional holiday music. it's a great family event. >> reporter: how long sewage department. the crew happened to be in the area doing pipe maintenance work and wanted to help. they used a camera. the water is pretty murky but because of the rain it made it pretty clear. >> it was gold so it was very shiny. we had a light on the camera. we were able to see it quite well. all the stars and moon lined up. >> it wasn't something in their job description. >> that is just morning. welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 5:15 is the time. you're looking at what is going on preparing for another major storm in the philippines. thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes this morning as a typhoon moves toward the philippines. the storm was slightly downgraded over night but winds are still expected to reach up to 145 miles an hour with waves up to 45 feet high. the storm is headed for the same area devastated by super typhoon hyon last year. while the storm is not supposed to be as strong as hyon, many areas hit by that storm are still recovering. more than 3,000 people were killed and rosemary miguel says her family survived the last storm but worries for their safety. >> if it's going to hit us hard or even close to where it was with hyon they are going to go with the same thing. they are going to be suffering again. >> local organizations are monitoring the storm and preparing to help. they are looking for ways they can send money, food, and other items to families in need. the city of san francisco is putting tons of sand back where it came from. 42,000 tons of sand on the north end of ocean beach it will be moved down to the south end. strong waves, wind, and winter weather push all of that sand from the south end of the beach to the north. as it builds up, it's hard for people to get to the beach. it can also bury wildlife habitat. this is scheduled for daylight hours monday through friday. this may continue for several weeks. the new devils slide tunnel south of pacifica it will be closed for six hours starting at 10:00 tonight. however, this closure on the san mateo county coast has nothing to do with the recent stormy weather. cal tran is shutting down both bores because of a state mandated response drill. imagine paying just $0.29 a gallon for gas. that is what happened at one louisiana gas station. it was all because of a mistake made. cars, trucks, suvs, and boats lined up and people called their friends to tell them about the cheap gas. >> just pulled up and i paid and this is what happened. >> filled my truck up for $3. >> drivers were supposed to pay $2.59 a gallon. it took eight hours before the mistake was caught. the attendant says no one paid more than $10 for gas during that time. they are filling up. the station owner does not know how much that mistake cost him. >> but somebody is going to pay. >> maybe people will go back to the station to thank them. >> maybe. we are going over to sal. you are watching our commute. i would love for us to find something like that. >> not going to happen, dave. >> i know. let's take a look at what we have on the roads. it's not too bad here if you are driving on 880 north and southbound. it is a very nice drive and there are no problems but as steve said the rain will return later. steve has been tweeting with a gentleman who is going up to tahoe and just to let you know steve said that it's going to be better if you go early. we will bring in steve in a moment. bay bridge toll plaza the traffic here is light. i keep a close eye on the livermore valley because 580 is busy over the altamont pass. so far it looks good going into dublin. going out to tahoe earlier is better. >> not only that but it's a warmer system. snow level will go up pretty high. there is some thunderstorms to the west here and i think the breeze will pick up. the earlier you head up to 50 or 80 the better off you are. the rain is picking up. but it's almost all the observations say cloudy. a nice report from windsor saying rain picking up. we've had light rain. quarter of an inch to an inch and a half out of this system. the heavier amounts will be to the north. there will be some rain here in the morning. as the front gets closer, it will pick up for everybody. right thousand it's isolated isn't the snow level. even though it's 31 in tahoe. they have a south wind. that almost send the temperature up as well. pretty good cell right there out toward medesto and stockton. underneath this we are getting light rain. other than that all observations say cloudy. highway 17 back toward santa cruz proper. we get to the cloud cover. this thunderstorm could pop up from that. cloudy day, rain. temperatures 50 to 60. plenty of clouds and light rain. lighter amounts to the south. heavier amounts to north. it looks like san francisco and oakland. there will be another system camming in late sunday into monday. cloudy with rain. rain picking up later. coast bay inland. it really does matter. cloudy with rain today. we have a little bit of lingering into saturday but out of here. the next late system in the north bay on sunday. that will be a weak system on monday. there are signs of a very strong system. >> so they drivers, and also test delivery service. it will also subsidize prices and some of the 250 cities around the world where it's operating. this new investment puts it at $41 billion. that makes uber the highest valued private start unin the u.s.. we will be keeping an eye on gap stock when the markets open this morning. the san francisco based clothing retailer reported better than expected sales for november. same store sales from old navy chain went up 18% from the same time last year. banana republic sales were up 2%. sales for the name sake gap store they were off 4%. the owners of the south bay can day store are asking for help from the public to find something that is worthless to almost anyone else but priceless to them. kristin and dean scott run artisan candies in san jose. they use a handcrafted cart to fill their suites throughout the state. now the scotts are worried the thieves might toss out george and just keep the trailer. >> the nightmare and it's been raining for the francisco. there is a little bit of backup here in some of those cash lanes. looking at the richmond bridge in marin and also the whole area it's off to a good start. steve said tonight the commute is probably going to be bad. i concur with that. if it's raining at all for a friday evening getaway, you know what those are league. you might want to think about using public transportation. let's go back to the desk. crews work fast to fill in a massive sink hole before another storm moves in today. alex savidge has more. >> reporter: a bit of a race against the clock here trying to get all of this repair work done. you can see the progress being made out here. as it turns out this sink hole it was caused by a broken water storm drain line nearby here and all the water eroded the sand underneath the road. that is what led to this collapse. the 20-foot by 20-foot crater opened up during yesterday's rainstorm near sixth and lake. the sink hole is about nine feet deep. late yesterday gas and water service was restored to the area. crews will spend the day trying to fix sewer lines. it may take until early next week to finish repairs. in the meantime, a lot of cleanup to do elsewhere in the bay area. let me show you video out of marin county. this is surveillance video. shows flood waters seeping through the area. several stores in that same shopping center were also flooded and will have to be repaired as well. to bring you back out here to a live picture in san francisco. they have been filling the huge zheng hole up with sand and still quite a bit of work to do. they still have to repair the entire road. sewer lines still need to be repaired. and they want to get as much of it done as possible before the rain arrives later on today. a lot of people still second straight night of protest following a grand jury cease decision. 300 people marched in downtown oakland raising awareness of what they call a crisis of confidence of police officers. another group of protestors rallied at the fruitvale bart station forcing it to be temporarily shut down. the san francisco commonwealth club a close friend of martin luther king junior, former mayor andrew young spoke about race relations and the need for dialogue. >> if you don't have community, you are going to have chaos. well, we talk about building community. and that is by in large what we have to do. >> protestors plan another demonstration in oakland at 7:00 tonight at telegraph avenue and 27th street. protest in san francisco briefly stopped traffic on market street last night. several dozen demonstrators gathered at market and powell. at one point they forced a couple muni lines to be rerouted. new york city remains the epicenter of the police protests. 200 people have been arrested so far as thousands of demonstrators fanned out across the city last night from the brooklyn bridge shown there to the new york police headquarters. now the daughter of eric garner the man seen there, the african american man who died says that the officer who applied the choke hold to her father should take responsibility. >> nothing is going to bring my father back. you need to do the right thing, admit that she was wrong and do your time. walmart has removed a controversial television ad because of the eric garner choke hold case. that commercial which promotes a walmart brand cell phone plan shows -- the girl wraps her arm around her neck and she starts taking is selfies. her father is heard muttering i can't breathe. now those are the words that eric garner was saying as he was dying while being held in a choke hold by a new york police officer back in july. a 16-year-old girl is in custody accused of running over a san leandro police officer. the story we first brought you yesterday. investigators say the -- she had a minor injury to her hand. believed to be the result of police gunfire. police also arrested a 19-year- old man that was riding in the stolen car. san francisco police investigating two separate accidents involving cars and pedestrians. the latest one happened early this morning. police say a hit and run driver hit a woman crossing the street but she was not seriously hurt. police are still searching for that driver. according to witnesses, the driver was behind the wheel of a gray nissan sedan. a man is fighting for his life after being hit by a car as he walked across great highway in san francisco near john f. kennedy boulevard last night. the man was rushed to the hospital. he is listed in critical condition. the woman who was driving did stop immediately. she is cooperating with investigators. bart is making new efforts to prevent bikes from being stolen at its stations. representatives from bike east bay they will be at the bart stations during the evening commute. sharing bicycle security tips and also passing out free theft prevention materials. bikes are allowed on bart. there are about 6,000 bike lockers and parking spaces throughout the bart system. bart has secure bike stations to park bikes at four stations. next month they are planning to open another bike station another the 19th street bart station in oakland. there is also a bike station that surround construction at san francisco's civic center station. time is 5:40. forced to move out of a san jose homeless camp. coming up at 6:00, the cleanup
