good morning. thank you for joining us, wednesday, may 8th i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. you said it was going to be tricky to figure out how to dress. >> it is a little cooler but it will be nice this afternoon. that is correct. maybe layers here. a little more chill in the morning air. temperatures have dipped into the low 50s. still under cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. it will be in the 50s to low 60s. not a bad drive at all. it's a little crowded. when you do get to the toll plaza you will see more traffic. 6:01 let's go back to the desk. we are still following developing news from oakland. firefighters investigating the cause of a fire at the well known merritt bakery. this was reported at 2:45 this morning. it took 45 minutes to put out the flames. the battalion chief says the fire started on the first floor and then it spread. he also says some kind of plastic was burning and that made the smoke toxic. >> it was thick black smoke. >> reporter: describe what could have been burning. >> some type of plastic. some kind of petroleum products. something of that nature. at that point everybody is on oxygen. >> >> this was not the first fire there. we'll tell you more about that and other challenges firefighters face. that is coming up at 6:30. oakland police are searching for a shooter that gunned down a man and sent firefighters running. claudine wong is outside the station where damage from the shooting has been covered up. >> reporter: ground pam. we're at 50th and ban crowd. plastic now over one of the bay windows here. that glass that used to be there was shattered by a stray bullet and there is another windowed in in the station that was also happened. several firefighters were inside when it happened. let me show you where it started. you are taking a look evidence of the gunfire that ended uptaking the life of one man at 9:00 last night. firefighters heard those shots at their station a few blocks away. eight of them were inside the building. they had just come back from another call, were putting away their fear, cleaning their rig -- their gear, cleaning their rig when they heard glass chartering. >> it was ten seconds from moving away. and they started to dive. they heard the shots and they were not alarmed but then it got louder and then they dove. >> reporter: fortunately -- fortunately no firefighter was hurt. they were tweeting out captions saying where did that bullet come from? and stay safe out here. firefighters say the old station that was here was also hit. but they continue to work as usual and say today things will be business as usual because the battalion police says we are here to serve. live in oakland claudine wong. three brothers arrested at a house where three missing women were found are expected to be interviewed by police. amanda berry, tina dejesus, and knight were found alive. since then the fbi and investigators have been combing through the house. the three women were teenagers when they were kidnapped between the ages of 2002 and 2004. the family of the men arrested say they are still waiting for answers. >> there is two ways to be sorry. i'm happy because the girls were found. and i'm sorry because the damage was done by a member of my family. >> reporter: cleveland police officers are also facing questions about how they handled the case. neighbors say they made multiple reports about seeing strange things at the house. police never entered the home to investigate. coming up at 6:22 we will go live to cleveland for more. we continue our coverage of the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge saturday night. criticism is growing as the flames engulf the limo. several survivors and relatives of those who die told the chronicle the driver was slow to react. and he did little to help the women as they tried to escape the flames. but brown said he did everything possible to help and feels terrible at the fire. in the meantime the coroner released the names of all five women who died in that limo. 31-year-old near race is a for has was the newlywed. michelle estrera was a coworker and friend. jenny balon lived in dublin. anna al canter a also had two children. and 43-year-old felomina gore on coo was a mother also. two retrofit options are under consideration. a final choice will be revealed today along with details about the cost. we are also expected to learn whether or not the span's scheduled labor day opening will happen on time. the new 49ers stadium could have a official name as early as today. they plan to announce a naming rights deal during the press conference today. janine de la vega joins us now from the future home of the niners in santa clara. >> reporter: pam, construction workers are already starting to show up today to work on the new stadium. now let's take a look at it. i haven't been here to the site in a month or two. it may be named after a blue jeans company. ktvu has learned the 49ers will hold a news conference in san francisco to discuss a naming rights deal later today and a new name for the stadium may also be announced. the 49ers and santa clara city council -- [ inaudible ] >> all right we're having a little problem with janine out there. are they still going to be callrd the san francisco 49ers? [ laughter ] [ male announcer ] connect all your wi-fi-enabled devices with u-verse high speed internet. rethink possible. welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. police in cleveland, ohio are facing questions about how they handle missing person cases after the discovery of those three women missing for over ten years. tory dunnan is live in cleveland. good morning, tory. >> reporter: good morning, pam. things have started to get moving today. the investigation continues. we're told what police will be doing is securing the scene and they will also take a look at where we stand right now. take a look at all the evidence and decide where to go from here. all of this is coming at the same time as the three women are being reunited with family. amanda berry's grandmother waited ten years for this phone call. >> hello. >> amanda. >> yeah grandma. >> how are you? >> i'm fine. >> i thought you were gone. >> nope i'm here. >> reporter: the last time they talked berry was 16 but on monday she escaped from a cleveland home with the help of a neighbor and made a desperate call to police. for the family heart ache over in an instant. >> if you don't believe in mer cans i suggest you think again. >> reporter: amanda berry, gina dejesus, and knight disappeared between 2002 and 2004. they were found on monday in a home three miles away. family members of one of the women said berry and dejesus were in good condition but knight was weak and thin. now three brothers are behind bars awaiting charges. police say they never received any tips regarding the women in the house but neighbors are left to wonder how signs went unnoticed. reports of a naked woman spotted in the backyard yelling. suspect ariel castro seen with a little girl. >> those are the little things that we overlook. it breaks my heart. >> reporter: the fbi is investigating the case as the three women and their families begin to heal. and pam, charges have yet to be filed, but we are told by the police chief you can expect that to happen later today and there will be a news conference. >> reporter tory dunnan live from cleveland, thank you. time now 6:27. jc dugard the woman held captive for 18 years is talking about the discovery of those three women in cleveland. >> i want to say an amazing time to be talking about hope. with everything that is happening. >> dugard was in washington, d.c. last night. she was honored for her work supporting kidnapped victims. talking about the place in cleveland she wants the three women to know the kidnapping and abuse does not define who they are. it's just a horrible moment in their lives. here at home san francisco supervisor david campos now dropping his proposal to rename san francisco international airport after harvey milk. instead he's going to refocus his efforts to have one of sfo's terminals named after the slain gay rights leader. he gave up the original proposal because there was just too much opposition. time now is 6:28. a warping for you drivers in napa and the surrounding areas. the major backups expected in the coming days because of the bottle rock music festival. we are live in oakland where a restaurant goes up in flames.
