police officer. very few details have been released at this time. but the alameda county sheriff's office has confirmed there was a chase involving at least one officer today. it ended on eaton canyon road in castro valley. just off of 5.80. at some point there was a shooting as well. it's unclear who fired the weapon or if anyone was injured. but we are expecting more details from hayward police any moment now. we're going to bring you those updates as we receive them. but again, there is a shooting under investigation in alameda county. stanford no longer requiring masks on campus and inside classrooms. as of today, kron four's charles clifford joining us live now with more on how the sanford community is reacting to the change and what went into this decision. charles? >> yeah, well, we there's some concern out there that there could be a surge in covid cases this winter. but here on the stanford campus university decided the case numbers have been low enough for long enough to ease some of its big mask mandates. starting on monday. stanford university is no longer mandating mask-wearing inside classrooms. although individual instructors can still require masks as long as they give students advance notice masks are also no longer required on the marguerite shuttle buses. the university says the policy change is possible because the number of covid-19 cases on campus and in the surrounding community are low. >> on campus on monday, only a handful of students and faculty could be seen wearing masks. the people we talked to said the change was welcome news. >> the thing i think, know, multiple could get vaccinated and unpredicted. so that can time to move on that time to move i per se side for things to move i understand like, you know, i'm mom. >> my mother is a compromise. i can understand folks want those that are immunocompromised. but we're excvted for things to just move on. honestly, stanford university is still encouraging mask-wearing in crowded situations for people who may have tested positive for covid-19 but no longer need to isolate. >> and for those who know they have been exposed to the virus. all right, back live now, the university is also encouraging people to get vaccinated against covid-19. get your booster shots and masks are still required inside stanford's medical facilities that include stanford hospital and clinics. but this winter. >> they say the flu coronavirus and the respiratory virus rsv. we'll be circulating all at the same time and it could place a strain on hospitals. flu cases are already spiking in parts of the united states. and that respiratory virus. rsv is rising quickly in children. straining pate, pediatric hospitals in several states. covid cases do remain low here right now. but europe is seeing an increase in hospitalizations and deaths, which does suggest a u.s. outbreak is around the corner. while there is no rsv vaccine, health experts say the shots for covid and the flu offer the best protection against severe illness and death. an update for you on a major mystery in the peninsula on the peninsula. african police have finished their investigation on site of the mansion. we're found buried in the backyard have been reported stolen to palo alto police back in 1992. police will no longer be investigating at the mansion. however, the case is still open. happening today, nurses at alta bates summit medical center are going on strike. they're taking to the picket lines to call on sutter health to address several issues, including high turnover at the facility. kron four's will tran is in berkeley with more. >> it is loud, which is why we are across the street. but you can clearly see them over my shoulder and they will be there for the next 5 days. so they will not be inside. instead, they're outside. and if you have an appointment from now through saturday, you might want to call ahead. just in case your appointment has been canceled or just pushed back to another time when the show you video of the overnight hours, this is center helped bringing in replacement nurses. they have a lot of nurses to bring in because we're talking approximately 1800 nurses between 2 locations, the city of berkeley, as well as oakland. they have been negotiating since last june with no movement that is suitable for either side, which is why 10 days ago the nurses said we will be striking this mohning and actually started at 7 o'clock in the morning. the nurses they have too big contention that they want addressed. one is workplace violence. they claim that they want to feel safe when they were work from patients who might be unruly and 2 workplace turnover of that. it's happening too often for them. and they say the ones who lose out are the patients. i mean, i think it's true to out the hospital, but especially where training takes longer. so put all the specialty areas. we're trending content a super long time. so you bring in new nurses, train them all over again and when they're being trained. >> they say the patients are the ones who will not benefit from this. so center health did reach out to us. they have the response and they are saying by moving forward with a costly and disruptive strike, local nurse union leadership has made it clear they are willing to put politics above patients and the nurses they represent despite the intervention, a federal mediators. so we do know that this will last at least 5 days. no word on when they will get back to the bargaining table. we are talking again, 2 locations, berkeley and oakland, and it is very loud here. cars driving by and honking supporting the nurses. back to you. a man has been arrested after a deadly shooting at a high school in st. louis, missouri. police say 3 people were killed and at least 6 were hurt. >> dramatic video shows students and staff fleeing the building. the shooting started just after 6 this morning at central visual and performing arts high school police shot the suspect and arrested him. at least 2 of the shooting victims are students. one person suffered cardiac arrest. students told the st. louis dispatch they initially thought the incident was a drill. but then they heard gunfire. a motive for the shooting and the identity of the gunman has yet to be released. we will bring you updates, though, as we receive them. in the meantime, a 16 year-old boy has pleaded guilty to killing 4 students and hurting 7 more after he opened fire at a high school in michigan last year. even crumbley dropped his insanity plea this morning and told the court he knew what he was doing and he's ready to face whatever sentence he's given. his parents have been charged with involuntary manslaughter. they were called to oxford high school. the mourning their son opened fire to discuss his disturbing behavior. they said they would get him counseling but refused to take him home that day. shortly after they left as when the shooting took place. a former minneapolis police officer has pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting manslaughter. he was accused of doing nothing while george floyd was killed. alexander king pleaded guilty to state charges for aiding and abetting derek chauvin who was convicted of killing floyd he's the second officer to plead guilty following thomas lane, a 3rd former officer tote how rejected a plea deal earlier this year. this is the 3rd and likely final criminal trial connected to floyd's death. both former officers are already serving federal sentences after being convicted on federal charges for violating floyd's civil rights. former president donald trump's company set to go on trial on charges. it helped some of its executives cheat on their taxes. jury selection begins tomorrow in new york city. the trump organization's accused of aiding some executives in avoiding income taxes on compensation they received outside of their salary. that included things like rent-free apartments and luxury cars. trump signed some of the checks at the center of this case. but the former president is not charged with any crimes. across the pond. a former treasury chief rishi sunak is set to become britain's thought, look at all that sunshine today. and blue sky was just kind of a a golden day to be on the golden gate bridge. no doubt about temperatures right now. you can see we popped up to 70 degrees here in san francisco. 68 in santa rosa. 71 in concord. 72 in fremont to 60's and 70's all across the bay today, wind has still a slight northerly component to it. but you can see it's very calm out there. so it's going to be a nice day with lots of blue skies. and you can see here. yeah, lots of blue skies right now. as we look live look outside and again, just a tiny little bit of a breeze. so looking for temperatures to be kind of at or maybe a degree above board to below average today, so really will are in the 60's and 70's. and that's exactly what we're going to see. warmest temperatures, of course, will be inland spots like livermore concord, getting up to about 76 degrees. so here is the next kind of weather maker, low pressure system that's bringing some rain to the right? not a lot of fog this morning, which is quite nice temperatures today we're looking out for a 60's and 70's all across the bay. the warmest temperatures in the usual spots as we head inland at spots like santa rosa looking at about 76 77 in livermore. but around the bay here, really even half moon bay. 63 degrees. not bad for 8.71. if you're in redwood city about 70 in oakland today. so our weather headlines as we take another live. look, this is from the east bay right across. you can see san francisco there. you can even make out the golden gate bridge today. you know, you've got great visibility. when today, we're going to this beautiful day with plenty of sunshine. we do have a few clouds rolling in tonight. lee coming in from north to south and that is from that that a system that's to the north of us and what we have for rain chances this week. well, looks like next weekend could be a possibility. let me roll you lhrough this. this is the system to the north of us right now. now, i would like to come and bring us a little rain but doesn't look like it's going hold together. there's tuesday afternoon. those clouds roll through from that system and you can see just a whole lot of nothing right as we get to wednesday. but as we get later into the weekend to take you now into the weekend. so this is saturday afternoon. models are not locked in on this yet, but you can see the next system trying to make its way towards us. if that does happen, it will likely be saturday night into sunday would love to get some rain in here. so we'll see how we do a current kron four's rob nesbitt joining us live now from the scene of the incident. i'm rob. what can you tell us? >> i'm rate below the 5.80. overpass here on county road. you can see behind me beyond this caution tape, their police cruisers gathered at the entrance of the on ramp for the westbound side of 5.80. i want to show you some video, though, of what it looks like closer up to this scene. alameda county sheriff's hayward police and california highway patrol are on scene here. according to hayward police. this was a vehicle pursuit that ended with an officer-involved shooting. some new information that we just learned from an alameda county sheriff's office tweet is that there was also a carjacking that happened. police have the area around the on ramps around it. so it's hard to get a good vantage point of what vehicles are involved. still a lot of questions to be answered as to what happened during the shooting. and, of course, if anyone was hurt, police are expected to give an update here at the scene around 01:00pm. we will, of course, update you with any information that we learned from that press conference on kron 4 news dot com. and later this afternoon on kron, 4 news at 03:00pm for now reporting live in castro valley. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. seems like still a very active situation there, we will await from you and policing so much. >> other news this afternoon, a late night sideshow waking up of neighborhood on sunday. 4 people were actually arrested for this crime for them. harry spoke to neighbors who say these sideshows just keep happening. >> i spoke to several people in the neighborhood who told me they're afraid more people are going to get hurt. i found this piece of a tire. this is the rubber from it. it's all cooled upon itself. and you can see the wires poking out. this is just some of the debris left here. but take a look behind me. you can see tire marks still left on the street. >> it's a sight that's become all too familiar in this fillet who neighborhood the major intersection of columbus parkway in georgia street. again, the scene of revving engines, thick smoke and cheering >> 3 times this year's 200 people close to 200 people. the whole street was. >> cars on the street. the evidence is everywhere, debris and skid marks from the doughnuts and burnouts city is worried about people's safety at these sideshows, even if they're only there to watch my worries about the expert figures, the people that are standing there because the cars are going very, very fast. >> they can easily and loose. >> as you can see santa rosa is also talking about how to stop sideshows. their city council set to meet tomorrow discussing passing a measure that would give police the ability to arrest or cite everyone involved in a sideshow. that includes those driving the cars. the passengers as well as those watching from the street and organizers, if approved, this ordinance would go into effect november. 25th. new at noon, an arrest has been made after santa rosa. police found 200 pounds of pot in a home as well as guns, ammo and suspected fentanyl pills. here's a look at the hall. police conducted a probation search on a home on walter road. they found several handguns, a stolen rifle, a 50 round drum magazine and evidence of drug sales. police arrested a man named luis fuentes for possessing all those goods. they're still looking for luis, his brother, jose, who is wanted for violating probation and other charges related to that stache. a new report is shining light on the damage the pandemic may be causing to children's education, according to the national association of educational progress, scores fell at a level we haven't seen since 1969. and reading scores have fallen to a 30 year low, for example, shows more than 60% of 4th graders are testing at basic levels or below for both math and reading. the report is the most comprehensive snapshot yet of the pandemic's damage to an entire generation's academic progress. well, hurricane roslyn slammed into a sparsely populated stretch of mexico's pacific coast over the weekend, winds of almost 120 miles per hour brought heavy rain and large waves. the storm also left flooded roads and damaged homes. once it made landfall, though, it kind of lost steam. it was downgraded to a tropical storm as it co tinue to move north and east. thing is what the hurricane does come in to land in mexico, it hits mountains and that helps to tear it apart. but boy, a very dangerous system. >> starting with a live look at temperatures here. we're having a nice cool going to be about at or just slightly below average in most spots could see that 72 in san mateo, 70 in berkeley, 69 in napa, but up to about 73 degrees already up in saint live look outside. this is half moon bay where you can see the gorgeous sunshine is out there just sparkling on the water. so pretty very nice run. as far as marine layer was concerned. we'll kind of see that as we head into tonight. you're taking a look at podcast now and take you throughout the day today. you see some of the clouds coming from the north. that is from the system to the north of us up in the pacific northwest. but really are going to be limited as we get into the overnight hours tomorrow. we should have another kind of nice day. now those clear skies do mean that we get cooler temperatures at night like we did last night. so that's kind of the cabbie out to that. but today, highs looking about, as i mentioned at or near normal that 68 san francisco. 71 in oakland, san jose about 74. we'll see a mid 70's in livermore. concord. and same story in santa rosa were right about where we should be this time of year. so stormtracker 4 showing you those nice clear skies out there. but as we zoom out, you do see the system to the north of us that we're going to see some clouds from as we get to the next 24 hours. i'll have details on our chance of rain potentially popped up over the weekend. a banner was displayed over the 405 freeway near long beach airport with the caption, quote, was right about the jews referencing kanye west's recent anti semitic comments on social media. also, flyers were distributed to at least 25 homes in a neighborhood on the west side of l a with the caption, quote, every single aspect of gun control is jewish. that was written next to pictures of jewish lawmakers. a local rabbi said these attacks are taking a toll on the younger generation. >> children sometimes not always want to. we had the gun the car and that's it says they will. but they kind of wearing a baseball cap. now. why they hiding? >> because i have no way this of hate. >> and the think themselves, what did i do? y you hating? >> police say they're investigating the hateful fliers, but at this time they believe there is not an immediate threat to anyone's safety. to the north. the mayor of portland, oregon has a new plan to fight what he calls an escalating homeless crisis. >> he's proposing to ban camping on city streets and move people to designated campsites. alex caprariello has a closer look at the proposal. >> there's a state of emergency in portland where more than 3,000 people are living on the street. that's why the mayor is introducing a new initiative to combat what he calls a humanitarian catastrophe in his city. we have to do something. people and we need to do something different and we need to do it scale. it will make a difference in the proposal. 3 designated camping sites would serve up to 500 people. a piece providing access to basic human necessities like food in bathrooms and social services like mental health and substance abuse care. the police could arrest or cite people who continue to camp on the side of the road. we can no longer tolerate the intolerable. it's time to build. it's time to innovate. and it's time to take some reps to get our city out of the blanchet house, an organization committed to helping the homeless of portland has expressed optimism in the mayor's plan that the executive director also has concerns. he says some people are resistant to living in congregate shelters with hundreds of others due to past trauma and that arresting homeless men and women could overburden an already backed up criminal justice system. >> suffering from a shortage of hospital beds, psychiatric staff and public defenders. we're going to have to do something very significant in comprehensive and compassionate about mental health and addiction services. and frankly, that's going to take the state of oregon because they are really the ones who can play the biggest role in moving these services for. >> that was alex caprariello reporting for a city. officials say they faced off in their one and only debate of the election season. it happened in san francisco last night. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace was there. keep in mind this debate aired primarily on the radio and competed directly against sunday nfl football. nonetheless, it focused on the issues facing california >> 2022 california gubernatorial debate, democrat gavin newsom and republican brian dolly squaring off at kq ad headquarters in san francisco. >> in the only california gubernatorial debate of the election right up the top. both candidates going after each other. and i want to start unclear. no arrests have been made. this marks the 29th homicide in san jose. so far this year. and the east bay, there are fewer guns on the streets of pittsburgh over the weekend. the police vehicle spun out lost control into the embankment. the suspect then fled on foot, armed with a handgun northbound. canyon officers gave chase. and at that point, the subject was seen attempting to a nearby passerby at gunpoint. and that was when intervenes and shots were fired. the suspect was taken into custody. he treated for at least one gunshot wound and was transported to a local medical. facility for treatment. and that's a world. pass it over to the tenant. kelly. to get further updates. >> so so following up on that, we've our preliminary investigation thus far has revealed that this vehicle that's that's over here on the embankment was earlier involved in a a kidnapping robbery situation in the city of emeryville working with emeryville police department right now to get further details that had that just came in, that this car, our suspect was armed with a handgun. he had multiple magazines. we know that he fired close to a dozen rounds at the scene of the apartment complex we believe that had people not intervened at that complex, that it's likely he might have commit a homicide while the pursuit was going we've we've so far we've learned that he was actually holding the gun up to the pursuing officers and threatening them with a handgun. this was a very active unfolding situation. i'm very dynamic when they did the pursuit intervention technique here, they were able to push the car up into that ravine on the side of the road. that did not stop the suspect. he continued tried to flee in the car as the we're trying to get out of their cars to approach him. he rammed one of the patrol cars. we believe one of the officer's legs was pinned between the door and the frame of the door and he was injured. so we have one injured here. police officer that was taken to the local hospital non life threatening injuries. we have to see the severity of those more to follow on that. the suspect has since been pronounced deceased at the hospital. we're working right now in identifying the individual and also working notifying next of kin. this investigation is complex. there's multiple locations here all the way from the apartment complex, the the route of travel, the pursuit intervention technique and then it's as you go up the road. there was a resident who lives up the road into the canyon. that rural area. it's mostly a ranch small community up there. one of the residents was on her way to work this morning when she came across this man with a gun stopped her car, put a gun to her and threatened to shoot her or take take the car from her by force with that handgun. that has been about the time that officers intervened and the shooting occurred. we've been listening. we've been listening here to the alameda county sheriff's office and the hayward police department. >> discussing a police pursuit that ended in a crash and then a with a suspect that's pursuit of that suspect started in emeryville. he was in a car that was involved in a possible kidnapping at a robbery when police tried to pull him over the suspect vehicle spun out, landed in an embankment to the suspect then got out, tried to flee. they then tried to carjack someone at gunpoint. that's when officers opened fire and shot the suspect. that suspect was taken to the hospital. according to alameda county sheriff's. that suspect has died. there is a lot
