Thats more than 6 1 2 feet and other parts of new england are still digging out of piles of snow from previous storms as the next round heads their way. The city is working to move as enough snow out of the way as possible. People are getting ready for their daily lives and routines to be interrupted once again by another storm expected to dump more than a foot of snow on top of whats already here. With a windchill at minus 13 degrees, boston city workers and the National Guard were digging out neighborhoods before the next major snowstorm. Boston has already receive mder than 74 inches of snow over the last 30 days. Mayor marty walsh. Were preparing for this weekends snowstorm, so snow removal is our top priority in the city of boston right now very very. Reporter crews are hauling away 1,500 tons of snow a day. Snow workers are working around the clock mving more than a thousand tons of snow an hour. The arctic blast is affecting an estimated 127 Million People across 27 states and the district of columbia. Friday the windchill in berlin, new hampshire, was minus 28 degrees. Minus 45 in langdon, north dakota, and it was one degree warmer in ail a gash maine. Chris mohammed is with community serving. He and his group have served meals to 929 this week. In 20 years he has never missed a dinner no matter the weather. Theres challenges all the way around. The storm doesnt look ought that impressive but as it dives toward the coastline, its going to pick up moisture. Going to pick up rapidly. Snow develops this afternoon. It becomes steady this evening, but a little lonely action either side of midnight before the snow fills back in. Bands of moderate to heavy snow whipping in the coastline of new england. Tomorrow morning with blizzard conditions wrapping up west to east during the afternoon and evening. The jackpot still looks to be in central and Eastern Maine where 1 to 2 feet is possible but northeast massachusetts could see a foot to a foot and a half. Lesser amounts the farther west you go. Gusts will be impressive with this storm. On the backside of the storm, over 50 Miles Per Hour at the coastline to 50 Miles Per Hour across the interior and some gusts higher than that near cape code that may exceed 70 Miles Per Hour in some spots. High tide possible tomorrow. Northfacing beaches especially with that wind whipping up the waves will experience some significant beach erosion from plum island back down to the cape cod bay area. Police in canada have stopped a valentines day murder plot at a mall. Two people were allegedly plan gog to a Shopping Center in halifax, nova scotia today. The plan was to kill as many people as they could before killing themselves. I wouldnt characterize it as a terrorist event. I would classify it as a group of individuals who had some beliefs and were willing to carry out violent acts against citizens. One of the suspects shot and killed himself friday when police surrounded his home. Another suspect, a woman from illinois, was arrested at the halifax airport. Two other canadien men are alleged to be involved in the plot. Americans across the country and people around the world say they are praying for the three Muslim College students killed this week in chapel hill North Carolina. Search warrants shoal that police found an arsenal of weapons in the gunmans home. Vicente arenas has more. Reporter daily prayers at the Raleigh Islamic Center where all victims worshipped were held with a heavy heart as friend after friend approached one of the victims fathers, mohammed barakat. The president is hoping to sign up silicon valleys top tech firms in the growing war against hackers. Major garrett has that story. Reporter president obama used his executive power to create more information sharing between the public and private sectors when Cyber Attacks strike. His goal is to get government and business to Work Together to prevent the next sony target, or home depot hack. Its one of the great paradoxes of our time that the very technologies that empower us to do great good can also be used to undermine us and inflict great harm. The president designated the center to coordinate and connect the dots for agencies fighting Cyber Attacks. Sean henry is a former director and assistant to the fbi and head of the cyber bran hes now the head of security. Good morning. Good morning. What exactly is this agency going to do . Put in place plans with those agencies. Theyre operational. Theyre collecting intelligence. Theyre trying to operate to mitigate the threats from these hackers that are coming from abroad and collect that intelligence so it can share with Senior Leadership. You mention its five agencies now overseen by one. Weve heard the numbers. A staff of 50 a 35 million budget. Did the other agencies lose any power . Those agencies will still be in place according to the president s plan and they will actually be out operating to stop the hackers, to arrest through the fbi, through the Intelligence Community to identify who the hackers are. This agency will collect intelligence so those agencies can feed up intelligence and Senior Leadership will have clear visibility. Thats the plan. Sean, when you were with the fbi, you were at the for front. Have we fallen behind here . I think were falling every day. They dont have to follow legislation. They dont have to not pricecy issues. Theyre developing new techniques every day. Its hard. The defense is outpace fwid offense every time and its really a significant challenge. Do you think the Tipping Point in all of this with toe sowny and the government saying we think this is north korea, were identifying a country thats responsible . I think North Carolina was a significant change here. These types of attacks have been going on for well over a decade and when sony occurred there was an actual destruction of physical hardware and there was a massive change. Its good to see the government giving it a sense of urgency here because we need speed. One thing has been convincing private companyies to take part in this. Is there actually a relationship here now . Yeah there is. And this is a great point here anthony. The companies are not sharing personally identifiable information with the government. What theyre sharing is threat information. What are the tools and the tactics that the hackers are using back to the government and the Government Vice versa. What can they share with the private sector. So within the networks, people can hunt and detect on their networks, new officer news of attack. It makes everybody smarting to stop these attacks. Thats happening now. This is the issue. This is what the government wants to see. The encouragement into the private sector is critical. There has to be a sense of trust. Has not always been the case. Its going to require a little bit of effort here to gain that level of interaction. Sean henry, thank you do so much. Thank you. A new study examined how much plastic is being dumped into the worlds oceans. The findings are beyond frightening. Heres John Blackstone. Reporter researchers collected details of how 192 coastal countries got rid of their trash and they calculated that 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean each year. Coauthor of this study Janet Jan Beck showed how much that is. Five bags like this of filled with plastic for every foot of coastline in the world. This plastic ends up not just floating on top of the ocean. It goes all the way down through the water column and to the bottom. Some of it tends to sink and some tends to float and were not exactly sure what happens to the fragments when they get below. They found 20 countries are responsibility for 80 of the plastics going into the ocean. China is the worst with 2. 4 million tons. United states with over 120,000 pounds. Thats just the toich the iceberg. Theres more. Reporter hes been tracking whats known as the pacific garbage patch aboard his boat. Shes got over 1,000 miles of research that out there is finding plastic. It sure is. His latest rediscovery is ropes, floats and traps that have created an artificial island. Theres cups like this theres lids of trash cans like this. Theres a Floating Island of plastic that you can walk on . In the middle of the pacific we discovering this summer. We were there for a month. Its beyond my wildest fears how bad its gotten out there. Time now for morning rounds with cbs news chief medical correspondent dr. Jon lapook and cbs contributeor dr. Holly phillips. We talk about womens hearts. Tell us about this study. It looks at thousands of patients who had heart attacks men and women. What they found out is women reported more stress and had a slower recovery in the first month after a heart attack. Now, the study couldnt prove that the stress caused the slower recovery, but it did establish a really important link and its one of the first really big studies to look at the psychological effects on our recovery. I think everyone thinks they know what stress does to them, but are there any universals on what it does to the body . Sure. Stress releases a huge cascade of hormones and substances that raises inflammation in the body raises your heart rate and Blood Pressure. But i think in my practice i see people who are really stressed have a harder time quitting smoking, have a harder time following a hearthealthy diet or even exercising, so i think it has a huge umbrella effect on how we approach our health. Jon women have whats called a worse health status. What does that mean . They look at things like chest pain angina the quality of their life what kind of life theyre having and how they report that and their mental health. All those are worse. Another study looks at the power of cat naps. For some it mate be the right anecdote for those with a lack of sleep. Researchers found 30minute naps are the best and boost the immune system for the sleep deprived. They work for me. But its widely effective . Its a very small study but what im rooting for. Im a nap enthusiast myself. They looked at a small group of men in a sleep study. They looked am them getting over two hours of sleep a night. The second time they were able to take two half hour naps. What they found is after having that extreme sleep deprivation, there are changes in markers of hormones that create stress and something that helped the immune system. So they saw these really major physiologic effects on the body but the night after the men were able to take two naps all of those markers went back to normal. It shows that napping might have some protective or repairrative effect for the body. We traditionally get 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. If youre taking a nap, is there a window . They feel as though one of the magic numbers is about that 30minute nap. We know it boosts our mood alertness, cognitive abilities to learn. It my be that longer naps have the same effect but youre more prone to get grogginess afterward. So 30 minutes might be the magic number. Experts are changing their minds again about what we should and should not eat. A federal panel is ready to reverse five dekatsd of advice on avoiding cholesterol. It could appear in the next issue of die. They used the term nutrient of concern, theyre saying cholesterol is no longer a nutrient of concern. The higher the bad cholesterol the higher your risk of having a heart attack and other bad things. In terms of the amount of cholesterol in your tight theres no good evidence that the amount of ch cholesterol that you consume directly translates to a significantly elevated level of cholesterol in the blood. The problem is law never catches up with Technology Fast enough so i can give you, sell you my dvd, i can certainly go out and buy a new one and sell it to you again, but lets say that what im dealing with is this digital product. Well, the law says going back 100 years, theres something called the first sale doctrine. And what the first sale doctrine is in plain english is this. You would owe the person that owns the copy right you would owe them money if you going to resell something, but because of first sale you dont owe them anything. If you own it, you get to be able to sell it if its physical and you can touch it. Right. It doesnt apply digitally. No. And the reason is the difference between used and new. If you use Something Like a dvdd or book it deteriorates. Digital material never deteriorates. Its the difference between distribution and duplication. Lets bring it to the forefront. A company said, no we were migrating files. They were saying i have a file im giving you the song and im going to lose rights to it. What happens is redigi said were going to create this service. So if i have itunes and im done listening to them, im tired of them and i want to sem sell them to you. I would go on redigi and resell it to you. You would wind up getting it. I cant remember the countless amount of times that we ate boiled potatoes and eggs with a little bottle of olive oil and vinegar on the side. You were initially looking to go into architecture. Was. When did you decide it was food . Before that it was basketball and soccer. My dad said, hey, youre too small to play basketball so i started studying architecture and interior design and i couldnt do this for too long. I couldnt sit still. Was very energetic. It took a trip to the Culinary Institute of america at hyde park, nok, that i said like the hustle and bustle and stress of working in a professional kitchen. It seems you trained in both spanish and french food. Did you think ill try Something Else and come back . Yes. My initial training was classical french and modern french and then traveling through france and spain. And then it came to a point in the early 2000s i wanted to be a chef, have a restaurant one day and i wanted to create my own identity.
