answer questions about his time at the white house. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning folks from the gulf coast to new england are being hit with a nasty wintry mix of snow, ice, and some very cold temperatures. there are freeze warnings posted from texas to alabama and winter weather advisories and warnings from georgia to maine. snow fell through the day in louisiana. it's part of a system that's moving into georgia this morning. schools are closed in atlanta where it's expected to feel like minus 2 today, and up to an inch and a half of snow is expected. roads are dangerous in houston. the city was caked in ice following yesterday's severe weather. schools there are closed for a second day in a row. and in raleigh, north carolina, 2 to 4 inches of snow expected today. lauren haviland, our raleigh affiliate wncn has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. those 2 to 4 inches are coming to somewhat of a surprise to the folks here in raleigh and beyond because we just got snow just two weeks ago, and to see snow again is quite amazing. so we are preparing here in north carolina. the governor, roy cooper, has declared a state of emergency. that just means here at least in north carolina, emergency responders and department of transportation crews are going to be able to move throughout the state to those areas from the mountains to here in central north carolina, they're expected to see as much as 5 inches of snow. that snow has not begun to fall quite yet, but it's expected to fall later this morning, so crews have already brined the roads. they began that process just two days ago. they have laid down 1.7 million gallons of that brine mixture, so now the only thing left to do is snow. in raleigh, i'm lauren haviland for cbs news. lauren, thanks a lot. in washington now, the political temp is downright frosty. house conservatives are scrambling to prevent a government shutdown. john schiumo is here in new york with more on that. good morning, john. >> good morning, anne-marie. house conservatives insist they have the votes to reject that plan. now, that plan also does not include democrats' demand to protect immigrants brought here illegally when they were children. with a doed deadline looming, the pressure is mounting. lawmakers in washington are working to strike a deal to avert a government shutdown, but with friday's deadline approaching, the focus remains on finding common ground on immigration reform. >> the only one who can allow a government shutdown is donald trump, and i don't know why he would humiliate the united states, humiliate himself, humiliate his party by having a government shutdown. >> reporter: at issue, what to do about d.r.e.a.m.ers, immigrants brought to the united states illegally when they were children. democrats are threatening to vote no without a deal on daca protections. complicating matter, president trump's description of haiti, el salvador, and african nations as blank-hole countries. testifying before the committee on tuesday, the homeland security secretary kirs stin nielsen said she never heard that language. >> what was the strong language? >> let's see. apology? i never heard the word. >> your silence and amnesia is complicity. >> daca supporters held a sit-in at senator chuck grassley's office on tuesday. with emotions running high and a deadline looming, the white house says the president is committed to fixing immigration. yesterday it announced it will try to lower a court's ruling to block president trump. it also plans to file an appeal with the supreme court. anne-marie? >> john schiumo in new york. thank you. the president now 71 years old had a physical last week. navy doctor ronald jackson who took care of mr. trump said the president needs to lose some weight but that the president did expedienting cognitive screening test mr. trump requested. >> he has absolutely no cognitive or mental exceedingly well on a cognitive screening test mr. trump requested. >> he has absolutely no cognitive or mental issues whatsoever. he's very sharp. i think the reasonable goal over the next year is 10 to 15 pounds. we talked about the diet and exercise. he's more interested in diet that than exercise, but we're going to do most. well t house intelligence committee plans to call former white house chief strategist steve bannon for a second interview. bannon appeared before the committee voluntarily yesterday but refused to answer questions about his time working for the president. the committee is investigating russian election interference. when bannon wouldn't talk, the the committee issued a subpoena.
