light winds in san jose, also in fremont. but a little gusty around san francisco at 16. same in fairfield. was it a windy day yesterday and gusty winds last night. today breezy winds 10 to 20, some gusts up to 25. temperature-wise 60s, 70s. slightly warmer than yesterday. partial clearing back to the coast. full forecast is coming up but first, let's go ahead and send it to jaclyn. >> good morning. right now, we are tracking a quiet start to our wednesday morning commute. no metering lights yet. speeds are in the green as you head into san francisco. we'll take it over to the altamont pass, westbound 580 starting to see a few brake lights there in the yellow as you approach livermore. then speeds pick up. we're already in the yellow for your travel times. out of antioch we are getting reports of a crash. this is along westbound 4 near somersville road. it doesn't appear to be blocking lanes. hat's a check of your traffic; over to you. a passenger plane has finally arrived in the bay area after a laptop fire forced an emergency landing in michigan. joe vazquez reports from sfo with more on the frightening moments on board. >> reporter: the flight with 158 on board originated from jfk airport in new york heading here to sfo. but it had to be diverted to michigan after a fire on board. >> any injuries on board from the fire? >> not that we're aware of. >> reporter: sometime after jetblue 915 left new york, passengers noticed something was wrong. one passenger from san francisco emailed us to tell us passengers noticed smoke coming from row 25. turns out the lithium battery from a laptop in a backpack in the overhead bin had caught fire. she sent this photo of what she says are burn marks left by the battery. flight crew put out the fire and decided to do an emergency landing in grand rapids, michigan. >> i was stunned. i knew something was going to happen because, you know, lithium batteries catching on fire at 38,000 feet -- [ laughter ] >> you can't help but think you have to do something. [ laughter ] >> so i was prepared for it. >> reporter: the jet landed around 8:00 local time. it was on the tarmac for nearly three hours. joe vazquez, kpix 5. >> passengers had to sit on the runway in michigan for nearly three hours. [ microphone trouble ] >> finally took off and was at sfo. >> it was a scary calm situation. it was like you're in shock but you can't really do anything. that's how i would describe it. i can't really put it into words because it's just, like, it just happened. >> the flight landed safely around midnight. a san jose state student has admitted the story she told about being kidnapped at knifepoint was a lie. she told investigators she was abduct at her off campus apartment and forced to drive to coos county, oregon where she claimed to escaped but she recanted as they interviewed her. san francisco police could be one step closer to finding a missing toddler. kpix 5's betty yu shows us the clue that's getting loved ones of the three-year-old some hope. >> reporter: a three-year-old ariana fitts disappeared more than a year ago. she was last seen in oakland. her mother 32-year-old nicole fitts was found murdered in a shallow grave at mclaren park in san francisco last april. police confirmed that a car associated with ariana's disappearance and possibly nicole's killer has been found. >> hopefully it's good. hopefully that means that we're closer to finding ariana. >> it's exciting and relieving but at the same time, this shouldn't be part of the situation at all. >> reporter: arianna's aunts say they believe their niece is still alive. >> i feel that someone fell in love with her personality and someone wanted her as their own, you know? she is very charming girl. >> reporter: the family says investigators initially focused their investigation on arianna's babysitter helena martin. >> the period of time before all this happened, um, my sister was having difficulty with the babysitter. when it came time to pick her up, pick arianna up, they would come up with excuses as to why they aren't home. >> reporter: since her disappearance, the fbi executed search warrants in oakland, emeryville and daly city in an effort to find her. there is now a $10,000 reward for information leading to arianna's return and the arrest of nicole's killer. betty yu, kpix 5. state safety inspectors are trying to find out if the steep angling of an east bay waterslide extent a 10-year-old boy flying. video shows his ride on the emerald plunge saturday ending with him toppling over the side rails. dublin's new city-owned park had only been open for 90 minutes. cal/osha says that the slide's incline is among several factors it's now checking out. >> we're also taking into account the angle of the descent for this ride which is pretty extreme at 80 degrees as opposed to other similar rides, for example, the two water slides in concord at 30 degrees. >> inspectors are also reviewing the water levels in the slide's tube. the boy who fell off the ride was not seriously injured. we are just one day away from game one of the nba finals and if you want to see the game in person, get ready to pay up. ticket prices are fluctuating before thursday night's game between the warriors and cavs. but it looks like it will cost at least $500 just to get inside oracle arena. that price doesn't even get you a seat. that's for standing room. the cavs arrived in the bay area yesterday. the team is staying at the saint regis in san francisco and they are hoping to draw a little less attention than last year when they stayed down the block at the four seasons on market street. i don't know if that's going to happen. >> fire alarm possibly at the hotel? >> no, no, no. we wouldn't wish that. >> to let people know where the opposing team is staying? >> we have seen issues in the super bowl where the patriots' opponents got a fire alarm in the middle of the night. >> right. >> and the players had to wake up. [ laughter ] >> this is the bay area. we're classy. we're civilized. [ laughter ] >> we can give them a wake-up call. we're up anyways. you got a wake-up call from the raindrops on the rooftops in the east and south bays. this morning i believe we may have some video and there you have it, it's live actually not even video. this is the rain falling -- thanks to our photographer this morning -- we have the rain falling in san jose early- morning showers. my latest computer models suggest that we will see some measurable precipitation across the bay area up to about .10" of rain in some locations. i had the rain in the pleasanton area this morning all the way back in through castro valley. this is not virga. this is light to moderate rainfall and all this is sliding east over delta and sacramento valley. so more than likely as you head out, unless you're in the south or east bays, you're not going to see even drizzle. mostly cloudy skies. temperatures now pretty uniform in the 50s due to the deck of cloudiness. wind speeds up to 6 in oakland, 16 san francisco, 8 vallejo, 16 in fairfield. boy, it was a gusty windy day yesterday. same again today with this trough passing through the bay area. temperatures just a couple of degrees warmer than yesterday still 50s and no sunshine at the beaches. right around the peninsula today, in the 60s and low 70s. 75 degrees in morgan hill. now, when you look at these temperatures, they are pretty spot on for this time of the year. low and mid-70s throughout the tri-valley. high 70s around the delta. 78 degrees in fairfield. again, a variable wind throughout the day about 10 to 20 miles per hour. occasionally a stronger gust. meanwhile, 61 degrees in stinson beach with no sunshine. you will have some partial clearing of the skies in novato through petaluma. we'll have some sunshine in sonoma. and also, becoming sunny later today in clearlake at 77 degrees. a change in the forecast just in time for the first day of june. that full outlook coming up but right now over to jaclyn. >> good morning, happy wednesday to you. if you are getting ready to head out the door, we are tracking a crash. this is in the south bay. it's along northbound 101 just past 85. and as you can see, it doesn't appear to be slowing folks down. we also have some roadwork along that stretch but we are told that one lane is currently blocked and they are -- chp is running traffic breaks through the area. so you may just have a few slowdowns until they can get all that cleared out of the lanes. over at the san mateo bridge, things are looking good. those taillights are westbound out of hayward to foster city. 14 minutes in the green no delays. through oakland, still looking good from 238 on to the maze. the richmond/san rafael bridge maze some flashing lights on the left side of your screen there. that's caltrans doing some roadwork but no lanes blocked and no delays. back to you. >> thank you. new security concerns over whether president trump is making government secrets vulnerable to hacking. according to current and former u.s. officials, the president gave his personal cell phone number to the leaders of canada and mexico and urged them to reach him that way. officials say canadian prime minister justin trudeau has taken him up on his offer and according to a french official, mr. trump also exchanged numbers with french president president emanuel macron. no response from the white house. time now 4:40. a bay area girl is accused of secretly recording a high school classmate inside a bathroom stall. why the alleged victim's parents say the administrators aren't doing enough. >> plus, united airlines is accused of flying an unsafe plane after it was informed of a problem. who are these people? the energy conscious people among us say small actions can add up to something... humongous. a little thing here. a little thing there. starts to feel like a badge maybe millions can wear. who are all these caretakers, advocates too? turns out, it's californians it's me and it's you. don't stop now, it's easy to add to the routine. join energy upgrade california and do your thing. the faa is accusing united airlines of flying an unsafe plane. mechanics replaced a fuel pump pressure switch on one of their 747 jets back in 2014. the faa claims the airline did not complete a required inspection of the repair before the plane resumed flying. regulators say two flights happened after the airline was notified about the problem. united says it immediately took action after identifying the issue. the faa is proposing a $435,000 fine. two east bay parents have a message about bullying. they say their daughter was attacked online and now the district needs to do something about it! kpix 5's christin ayers talked to the family. >> reporter: at first, denise lynch thought it was nothing more than a childish prank. >> oh, my god. our front yard was a sea of skittles. >> reporter: thousands of skittles scattered outside her and her husband's danville home one april morning. but she quickly realized it was far more sinister. >> i was shocked! i was shocked! >> reporter: friends sent their daughter a sophomore at san ramon valley high school screen shots from instagram, another student had posted this, don't you dare say blank about me and my friends back again. hope you enjoy the skitsles. attached a video we cannot show you. it shows their daughter being secretly recorded as she goes to the bathroom inside a school stall. the lynch's filed a restraining order and called police. they say the girl admitted to recording their daughter and was arrested at school. >> this is a crime. the video that was uploaded clearly shows her using a toilet at a school facility and identified as sports practice at san ramon valley high school. >> reporter: but the family says van moan valley high school allowed the girl to come back to school the next day. they say she was eventually suspended for a few days but the school has declined to transfer her to another school. >> part of that process is not seeing that predator at the same facility same environment where she perpetrated that crime against my daughter. >> reporter: today, the superintendent and school board sent out a letter disputing some of the lynches claims. not all the information that has appeared in factual or accurate. while the district's drive for transparency, we are at times prevented from communicating all the facts because of federal laws that protect student privacy. >> reporter: but the family said it's true and the district's slow response has been a pattern. last week the school board faced a mob of angry students and parents. >> when are you going to actually do something! >> reporter: they blasted san ramon valley high for allowing a student to become class president after being accused of making a video that was racially insensitive to muslims. the lynches say it all sounds very familiar. >> the school board and the school administration seems to turn a blind eye to all this outcry and all these voices. >> reporter: in danville, christin ayers, kpix 5. the engineer behind uber's self-driving cars is no longer at the company. anthony lewandowski was uber's vice president of technology and former long-time employee at google. google claims he stole trade secrets and patents and brought them to uber. uber denies the allegations and urged him to testify but he refused to cooperate and invoked the fifth amendment. uber released a statement yesterday saying, he had been fired. hunter pence trading in his giants jersey for a barista's union for a day. he served drinks at peet's's coffee in san francisco's ferry building. monday's brawl against the nationals still has fans buzzing. pence is one of those players who helped separate hunter strickland and bryce harper when the nats star charged the pitchers mound. >> just trying to get everyone peace making, get out there get 'em off the field. >> pence is such a peacekeeper, didn't want anybody to get hurt. >> yesterday, strickland was suspended six games for his role in the brawl, harper is suspended for four games. both will play while they appeal that decision. >> yeah. >> for the suspensions. >> we were waiting to see what the punishment would be. >> it's a good idea to just hold back sometimes. you know, it was buster posey held back. you don't want to get hurt. >> he has all that equipment with him. >> he has been a whole season on the disabled list. >> he got bumped early in the season, too. >> grown men fighting. that's my two cents. >> right. this is something we haven't seen for the entire month of may light rain. it has been falling in the east bay and also into throughout the santa clara valley. i heard it start coming down about 12:20 this morning. i was like yes! i don't have to water my cantaloupe and my jalapenos and my habeneros today. or my cilantro or basil or rosemary or tomatoes! it's just gorgeous this morning. so all that rain is going to dry up. mostly cloudy skies right now only partial clearing away from the coast. temperatures into the 50s. it's 54 in santa rosa, 57 in oakland. linda is our weather watcher in fairfield this morning, she reports .2" rain. winds are up to 16. boy, those winds have been howling all night long. thanks, linda, for checking in with us. in fact, george hughes our weather watcher in san francisco is reporting gusty winds but only drizzle associated with the marine layer, just socked in. in the city of san francisco right now, also half moon bay. sfo with winds up to 14. you see lighter winds in hayward back through the tri- valley. 16 in fairfield. winds will be pretty breezy again today. satellite and radar that trough we were talking about ever since monday, it is now due east of the bay area. so any kind of precipitation you may be experiencing is short-lived. satellite-radar indicates lots of clouds overhead. again, here's the trough. that's the core of the center of low pressure, that will go east with more of a zonal flow with the onshore push. wednesday afternoon we clear out to the beaches but quickly fill back in tonight overnight. and then thursday we start off gray. we end up with earlier burnoff along the seashore and the temperatures will respond. but meanwhile today, i think this is a little bit advantageous as far as our computer models are suggesting but we are seeing a little measurable precipitation around the bay area. the rain dries up a little bit of sunshine 60 at the coast, 78 degrees in fairfield. as you take a good look at these temperatures they are where they should be for this time of the year. 73 in mountain view. the extended forecast calls for similar conditions on your thursday as far as temperatures are concerned. we begin to warm on friday through the weekend. it is a dry weather pattern through tuesday. let's play ball! it's matt cain on the mound for the good guys tonight. dress in layers even though the temperatures at 62 for first pitch. that temperature falls off very rapidly with a bit of a breeze. that's a look at your wednesday forecast. here's jaclyn. >> good morning. and we are definitely seeing those slowdowns now in that crash in the south bay. this is along northbound 101. we have actually had multiple reports of problems at bernal, 85, 87, one at blossom hill so it's definitely out there. speeds under 10 miles per hour. we'll keep an eye on that and let you know when all lanes are clear and when the speeds are back in the green. in the meantime if this is part of your ride give yourself a few extra minutes out the door. the rest of the ride through the south bay speeds in the green no reports of any other crashes. heading through the altamont pass, westbound 580, the usual slowdowns as you make your way out of tracy into livermore and then things start to pick up about a 30-minute ride from 205 towards 680. still in the green out of antioch. 27 minutes to hercules connecting with 80. over at the bay bridge toll plaza, looking good. traffic nice and light. we're tracking a 13-minute ride from the maze into downtown san francisco. back to you. time now 4:51. a california teenager learns a painful lesson while trying a dangerous car stunt. good morning, we are tracking an accident northbound 101 just past highway 85. be prepared for some slowdowns. we'll have a full check on traffic coming up. >> a teenager in temecula is in the hospital after doing a viral stunt called ghost riding. reporter crystal cruz shows us the dangerous game and its consequences. [ unintelligible rap lyrics ] >> reporter: watch as the drivers get out of their cars and dabbs around as the car drives on. an old music video once showcased the tricks. >> ghost ride ♪ >> reporter: the chp says on sunday a temecula teen tried the same stunt called ghost ride the whip and fell down then his truck ran him over, seriously injuring him. >> he had major injuries from what i saw. collapsed lung, shoulder and all that stuff. it looked worse because he was really bleeding out the head. >> reporter: dexter found the 16-year-old boy bleeding in the street in a neighborhood under construction near his home in temecula. >> they think they can come to an empty neighborhood and pull these stunts and he will answer for that and he got hurt. >> reporter: the teen's friend was also in the car according to the chp and dexter says he spoke to the frantic friend about what they were doing that led up to the injuries. >> he goes, oh, we were trying to pull this stunt on, you know, trying to youtube it and i'm just like oh!! >> reporter: because the driver is 16 and has a provisional license, he isn't supposed to have other teens in the car and could lose his license says a chp spokesman. neighbors are using this ghost ride the whip injury as a teachable moment for their kids. >> brings it to up okay, we need to keep an eye out and make sure we're communicating more with our children and their friends. >> reporter: the chp says alcohol and drugs not involved and said this was a case of bad judgment. the teen is lucky worse didn't happen. i'm crystal cruz in wildomar, kpix 5. more than a dozen burglaries and acts of vandalism were reported in a 24- hour period at bart stays. nine at millbrae, one at colma and two el cerrito stations where a car was also stolen. bart says that overall car crimes at stations are down. we found a rider at the millbrae station whose friend's car was burglarized but he says there's a way to keep his car safe. >> don't leave valuables in your car. always go back and double-check you locked it. >> bart says riders need to protect their belongings because it's difficult to patrol 47,000 stalls in the system. san jose high school students have scored a victory in a battle between artwork and wrecking ball. this tile mural and a few others lining san jose high school were set to be destroyed as part of a remodeling project but students and alumni pushed back saying the artwork celebrates the campus and the city and their letters to school and district administrators put this construction project hold. >> especially having all these students collaborate and having one idea come from so many different people it's such a nice feeling to have our school especially because this school is diverse in many ways. >> one of the school's art teachers is now trying to register them on campus with the california office of historic preservation. ♪[ music ] a jetblue flight from new york to here at sfo has to make an emergency landing. we caught up with the passengers who were on board and will explain the situation. >> reporter: and a major hearing on a rule that could crackdown on bay area oil refineries. i'm jessica flores live with the story coming up. good morning. it's wednesday, may 31. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. let's check the conditions this wednesday morning. a live look at the city of san francisco from our sutro tower. looking due east and, of course, the live look at the golden gate bridge this morning where things are looking good. >> right there. >> right there. >> what about everybody else? >> we are tracking some things. we'll get to that in just a moment. >> i had to use the windshield wipers today, not for long but just a few little wipes. >> for me it was from pleasanton through oakland. that's what we're forecasting in the east bay and south bay. i was on the phone this morning with kcbs radio. they are going what? there's rain? yes. we have weather and traffic on the 8s [ laughter ] like 56 times in the morning between 5 a.m. and noon and what you're not listening to me? no. honestly, we have had some substantial rainfall and photographer jim flanagan in san jose was providing us with the rain shots earlier this morning. right now light precipitation, bethel island antioch island all this jogging east. leaving in its wake mostly
