this morning at all. but when it does, it's all going to be associated with that right there that moisture coming into the bay area. mostly cloudy skies. hints of sunshine today but boy, is it much cooler, 35 in santa rosa to the mid-40s around livermore and in san francisco. redwood city at 44 realizing a high today of 50. look at that sky. we'll have some sunshine. we'll track the incoming storm in a matter of minutes. first good morning, roqui. >> good morning. it's 4:31. let's take a look at your wet roads. no rain but you still got to drive safely and slowly. the bay bridge toll plaza from carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will take you about 18 minutes and then expect no delays through the toll until around 5:30 or so. if you are heading into the peninsula here's a live look at the san mateo bridge from 880 to 101, that should be a smooth ride across the way. now to our problem this morning the altamont pass coming out of tracy you're moving at 50 miles per hour and north flynn road at 42 miles per hour. we have had multiple accidents this morning from potholes so westbound 580 before north flynn road there's a pothole there that is causing trouble in the right lanes so if you are head there is stay way from the right lane. otherwise good through livermore to the dublin interchange. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge from 580 in san rafael to the toll plaza that will take you 15 minutes. nearly three dozen people are out of their apartments after a fire in concord. the flames were so intense children were jumping out of windows to escape. this is the scene at the lakeside apartments. one unit caught fire. then it quickly spread to several others. firefighters say they had to rescue two children. >> two females have been transported to a local hospital to get checked out. [ loud background noise ] >> minor injuries. >> at least four apartments were severely damaged and the rest of the wing is off limits. crews had to cut off the utilities and are hoping to get it restored today. he cause is under investigation. meanwhile, water is the cause of all kinds of trouble in the santa cruz mountains. kpix 5's kiet do shows us, sheets of rain have kept crews busy and drivers on alert. >> reporter: this is what drying outlooked like in the santa cruz mountains. foggy, wet and slippery conditions on highway 17 made a mess of the evening commute again. as much as 7 inches of rain fell in the santa cruz mountains. much of that rainfall started to drain and pool overnight causing minor flooding like here at plateau and valley drive in selden. lee anne thought she could cross it but it was deeper than it looked about 6" in some spots. are you used to this kind of weather here? >> um, well, it's been missing for about five years. >> reporter: yeah. >> nice to have it back. >> reporter: in the words of one santa cruz county public works employee, they were busting. this was the scene on socal san jose road where multiple mudslides cut off access. the same happened on rodeo gulch road. half the road was covered with mud. on kings creek road a 45-foot- tall douglas fir with a 12-inch diameter trunk crashed on a high voltage power line. kiet do, kpix 5. >> the santa cruz county department of public works said they typically need a week of sun to dry out from this kind of storm. snow is piling up in the sierra. so much in fact that some ski resorts are closed because of avalanche danger. eu are firing off cannons in hopes of triggering a -- crews are firing off cannons in hoping of triggering a controlled slide and the avalanche warning is at high. >> i wouldn't go there now. i would let it settle for two or three days before i went out there. >> parts of heavenly are closed along with squaw valley, kirkwood and "sierra at tahoe." alpine meadows and donner are completely shut down rockslides south of big sur closed the highway. signs lined the road forcing drivers to turn around. this is the second time in less than a month that highway 1 near big sur closed. new details on the recovery effort for a couple who went missing on their what to big sur. authorities confirm they found one of the bodies. it was discovered near a wrecked car down the side of a cliff off highway 1. authorities say the victim is olivia gonzalez. the 20-year-old went missing when she and her boyfriend brian fernandez went on a road trip just before christmas. gonzalez's sister spoke after hearing the news. >> i was trying to race to get to my mom before she heard the news on tv and you know, i just -- when i heard this i just pulled up and i took off my shoes and i ran upstairs and grabbed my mom because -- [ crying ] >> it was her baby. that's our baby, you know? my sister was, like, my daughter to me. >> crews are still searching for fernandez. bad weather has slowed things down significantly. a "go fund me" page is set up to help the victims' families. so far nearly $5,000 have been donated. 4:36. roberta, this is real, not a rehearsal. >> thank you very much. what is very real is this storm that's coming into the bay area. it's not the biggest storm we have ever seen. once it starts raining on saturday it won't stop all weekend and will pile up on top of the rain we have already seen. yesterday in pleasanton i got home, it started to rain, it never stopped. it was just that light little rain. did that happen to you? >> it did. it just kept going. >> that's what it's going to be like this weekend but heavy rain. and gusty winds on top of that. so the drought-stricken trees will come down. there will be some power outages. and there will be some urban and small stream flooding. right now, our live hi-def doppler not picking up a raindrop in sight for the first time this year. we are dry and we have a 48- hour window to get outside and get it done. i brought my christmas lights down last night. because you can't do it this weekend. all because of this right here, this plume of moisture is roughly about 40 miles wide. right now it wants to take a direct aim let's say from the santa cruz mountains into the san luis obispo area. and it could shift courses and veer more to the north but that's its projected path right now and that's where we'll see a foot of rain in the santa cruz mountains. right now, mostly cloudy skies looking out towards the bay bridge. it's cooler than it has been all week long. 34 now in santa rosa to the mid- 40s across the bay area. we'll have some sunshine today. a good day to dry out. temperatures will be cool, however, only in the 50s. we'll track that incoming over the bridge this morning. roberta, too. that's right. roberta will tell you, too. kenny, not so much because he is from san francisco. let's check the roads starting with the altamont pass. that's our first problem of the morning. we have a lot of accidents here due to a pothole coming out of tracy. you're at 52 miles per hour and then slower towards north flynn road at 41 miles per hour due to pothole accidents. chp says we're not sure when they will get that pothole fixed or filled. so just avoid the right lane if you can. so north tracy boulevard to the altamont pass will take you about 20 minutes and then it frees up through livermore. once you get past that traffic on to the dublin interchange, 580 westbound to the altamont pass to 680 will take you 14 minutes. moving over now to our bridges, take a look at the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city. that will be a quick 14-minute drive. the nimitz freeway looking good. i'll send it to you. >> all right, roqui. thank you. firefighters are looking into a scary situation at a bart station. they had to rescue a han when he got stuck between a platform and a train. it happened last night at the 24th street station in san francisco. kpix 5's andria borba explains how they got him free. >> reporter: behind the locked gates of the 24th and mission bart station, one of the most unusual rescues in san francisco fire history happened. it was around 6:30 when a man slipped off the platform as the train was approaching. >> at bart there's a small gap about that big so your foot doesn't fall through. he was trapped in that little gap between the platform and the car. >> reporter: that space is only 4 inches wide. battalion chief charles crane says the man was small, likely only weighing 130 pounds. firefighters unhooked train cars and then deployed two airbags capable of moving 20,000 pounds apiece to push the car off the victim. >> any other situation going in any other direction, probably would not have survived it. >> reporter: surprisingly, the victim was alert and talking during the rescue. he was taken to san francisco general hospital with crush injuries. now, this rescue was filmed so other firefighters can learn what to do in the future if this ever happens again. in the mission, andria borba, kpix 5. >> the man is reported in serious condition this morning. police are searching for this missing pregnant woman from gilroy. amanda dailey is 4, protect, hasn't been heard from since monday, she is 24. they want to share her photo with the public and hope someone will information will call police. petaluma police have a mystery on your hands. they want to know who left a safe in the middle of a field near willowbrook court off north mcdowell boulevard. here's a picture of it partially hidden in the weeds. a city worker found the century brand safe yesterday morning. it is not clear what's inside the safe. you can see someone already tried to pry it open. time now 4:40. still ahead this morning, how a bay area nonprofit hopes a trip to the movies helps girls from underrepresented communities reach their full potential. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, from being displaced from their homes. oakland city councilmember rebecca ka there's a push to help people in oakland from being displaced from their homes. it's to help artists face eviction from warehouses. >> what we're doing now is trying to raise public awareness. we are trying to city councillors on our side so we can pork together going forward. >> the city council is also reviewing an ordinance to prevent displacement for people living in nonresidential buildings. apple's ceo tim cook has said apple employees would start moving into the massive new spaceship campus in cupertino sometime in 2017. we sent betty yu to find out when it could begin. >> reporter: city officials say this campus will be ready for its first employees to move in, in the spring of this year. locals have been looking at this complex for three years with curiosity. in the latest video you can see that this monster complex is about to be finished. today cupertino's vice mayor says it will happen in phases to eventually house more than 10,000 apple employees. apple had no comment on the specifics of the move and also would not commit to a specific move-in date but it did say it expects the spaceship to be ready for workers in, quote, early 2017. in cupertino, betty yu, kpix 5. ♪[ music ] it's 4:44. let's get another check on weather with roberta. >> we're just focusing on what's going to happen this weekend. good news about all this is we have some major rain coming but it's not a commute warning. >> yeah. >> so that's going to be really beneficial because you don't want to be on the roads saturday or sunday at this particular time. good morning, everybody. that's if our timing serves us correctly. today will be the first dry day of the brand-new year. our live hi-def doppler radar not picking up a raindrop in sight at all. mostly cloudy skies. the winds are relatively calm. and we have some cold air mass that's filtered into the bay area. santa rosa now at 34. this is the coldest morning so far this year, as well. 46 in san francisco. 44 redwood city. it's down to the mid-40s in san jose. so we will have a lingering rain shower out towards the monterey bay area today. otherwise, we are drying out. we are seeing right now atmospheric river conditions set up. this is the weather pattern here. when you see this plume of moisture it trails all the way back to the tropics. our jet stream is guiding that along the path into the bay area. so as it does so, once it starts raining, it's a training effect. we'll just see the rain keep on going, keep on going, all the way through sunday. at this particular time, everybody is in complete agreement as far as the national weather service is concerned and our kpix 5 weather department, we are forecasting three to six inches of rain in throughout the city of san francisco back through the peninsula. the targeted area will be the santa cruz mountains. we'll see more rain there than in the north bay. that plume of moisture is about 40 miles wide. so the targeted areas pretty much like the peninsula, santa cruz mountains into the monterey bay area. big sur is going to get slammed. so about a foot of rain is anticipated there on top of the 8 to 9" of rain that happened around ben lomand just yesterday. up to 7 inches in the west locations of the north bay. three to six inches of rain in the east bay. so what are we talking about for tahoe? we are talking about temperatures in the 30s and 40s but additional 11 feet of snow is expected. but this is really high. we are talking about 8500 feet, 9,000 feet and above. at lake level it's going to be rain up to 18 inches of rain so there will be some flooding in the greater lake tahoe area. winter storm warning in effect all the way until about 4 p.m. later today. our standard forecast calls for temperatures today into the 50s. we'll have a peek of sunshine, a good day to get out and get it done. same on friday. then the rain begins very early on saturday. doesn't stop -- we will end up seeing a little bit of break in the activity on monday before another system works in on tuesday and wednesday. roqui? >> thank you, roberta. it's 4:47. mass transit has changes for the san francisco bay ferries. so if you are taking that listen up. 6 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. ferries from vallejo to san francisco will be replaced by buses and that goes -- that's the same for the 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. from san francisco to vallejo. and then for south san francisco, we have 7:25 out of alameda and 7:40 out of oakland those two ferries to south san francisco are canceled due to mechanical problems. otherwise, bart, ace and muni are on time. to the roads, here's a look at the traffic on the altamont pass. coming out of tracy you're moving at 55 miles per hour and then traffic goes down to just 35 miles per hour. and this is due to multiple accidents out there because of reports of a pothole or debris. we are still getting mixed signals here from chp so we'll tell you the update later. north tracy boulevard to the altamont pass will take you about 22 minutes. then it frees up through livermore on to the dublin interchange where you have slow commuter traffic so from the altamont pass to 680 will take you about 15 minutes. moving over to the peninsula commute across the span of the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city, you're moving well and same goes for the bay bridge toll plaza. from the carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze that will take you 18 minutes and then expect no delay through the toll plaza. those metering lights their mentor believes a screening of hidden figures will prove inspirational. >> reporter: inside impact hub oakland the women behind the nonprofit black girls code are rolling movie posters for the movie all about the original black girl who coded, catherine johnson. >> i have never seen a mind like the one your daughter has. >> reporter: the movie hidden figures tells the story of three women catherine johnson, mary jackson and dorothy vaughn, who worked at nasa in the '60s and put john glenn into space. >> yes, sir. i prefer it over euclid yann coordinates. >> it's good for people to see, like, what their possibilities are for the future and a lot of this work has already been done by young women in the past. but it's just been untold. >> reporter: kimberly bryant the finder of black girls code has also launched this website, future catherine johnsons.com. telling the stories of members of black girls code for hopes and careers in "stem." >> we focus on the future for these young women but we want them to be aware of who paved the way. >> reporter: kimberly and company are also screening "hidden figures" to all 11 chapters of black girls code across the country who are admired for their brains, not their tiaras and boyfriends. >> these are heroes the girls need to see so i can't wait for the girls to experience it as well. >> reporter: for kim the story of women's of color set in the space race hit even closer to home. >> it's our hope that the work that we are doing with black girls code will indeed create future katherine johnsons that will help the world get to even co-owner of aq restaurant says he will be closing it down for good later this month. >> the last few years haven't been what we thought they would be. >> reporter: aq is one of several restaurants in midmarket and just south of market to shut down recently. there's his other restaurant, bon marche, citizen's band and a bakery. the blog called sf eater calls it the midmarket massacre. >> they are more sensitive to operate, shortage of labor which is a challenge across the country. i know you know the rent costs, insurance costs, all that goes up every year. and the profit dwindles. >> reporter: there's the twitter factor. the golden gate restaurant association says there was hope tech workers would fill midmarket restaurants on a nightly basis. one problem? >> in the twitter building alone there are three cafeterias. >> reporter: the bigger companies often serve their own food. >> if they have free food upstairs, what's the incentive to dine in a restaurant? once in a while you will make that choice but not daily. >> reporter: she says holiday sales have been down, eateries across the board are seeing fewer customers. she encourages you to support your favorite restaurant so the massacre doesn't continue. joe vazquez, kpix 5. >> macy's has announced plans to close 68 location across the u.s. and cut about 10,000 jobs companywide. the department store chain says that sales at its established stores fell more than 2% in november and december compared to last year. no northern california stores are on the list of locations to be closed. but back in november, the retailer announced that it was consolidating the two locations in san francisco's union square shopping area. macy's says that selling its men's store there. then it will lease the property for two or three years as it reconfigures the other store. one of the world's largest tech conventions gets under way in las vegas tonight. the consumer electronics show is where companies give us a glimpse of the future. hena daniels shows us some of the coolest new gadgets. >> welcome to the future. >> reporter: it's a chance for to us look at the latest out of this world tech and make us say, wow! gadgets like the mars levitating hifi wireless speaker available now. the smart home seems to be the trend at ces 2017 this year as companies have tech guided by artificial intelligence and voice activation. how about this guy? a surveillance robot keeping an eye on your house. >> robots are showing up all over. maybe not because the building is advanced but the software underneath it, cameras with vision. >> reporter: robotic smart lamp available in the fall, moving and adjusting brightness and connects to wi-fi and takes pictures. there's also aristotle from mattel coming out this summer. think of it as a high-tech baby monitor and the amazon echo in one. mattel says it can recognize when the baby wakes up and soothe them back to sleep with a lullaby. also order diapers and play guessing games with the kids. one requirement, when your children interact with the aristotle, they have to use the word please. and for the kid in all of us, the lego booth teaches how to code and build robots with the legos you already have. >> people wanting their kids to get their hands on tech earlier and understand how it works and how to use it. >> reporter: it will be
