peaceful. as marlie hall reports, the protests and legal actions appear far from over. >> reporter: more rallies are planned today as thousands have taken to the streets to protest the verdict in the george zimmerman trial. >> they are entering this intersection. >> reporter: demonstrations sunday lasted well into the night in cities from coast to coast. [ screaming ] >> reporter: in new york, protestors shut down times square and then marched through the streets to harlem. and in los angeles, demonstrators marched into the highway temporarily shutting down i-10. [ screaming ] >> reporter: most of the rallies sunday were peaceful but zimmerman's family and lawyers say his life is in jeopardy from people who are upset he was acquitted of second-degree murder in the shooting of trayvon martin. >> there's still a fringe element who have said at least in tweets and everything else that they want revenge. >> reporter: there are people who feel the legal system worked. >> it seems to me it was self- defense. justice was served. >> reporter: trayvon martin's parents were not in the courthouse when the verdict was read. family members spoke to the press sunday. >> very disappointed at this point. but we know in the end god will prevail and justice will be served. >> reporter: the martin family can still file civil lawsuits against zimmerman and the department of justice announced sunday it is looking into possible criminal civil rights charges. >> there seems to be evidence that suggest that is race may have been a factor. >> reporter: but experts say the legal barrier to even file charges in civil rights cases is high and it's even harder to get a conviction. marlie hall for cbs news, sanford, florida. >> and protestors were out in the street in oakland all weekend after the verdict was announced. chopper 5 caught up with protestors near 14th and broadway. by 11:00 last night, the crowds thinned out. police told people it was time to go home. and they did so peacefully. earlier protestors burned a flag and some new vandalism including broken windows and some graffiti was reported last night. >> it was a big impact on the community because that could have been my son. i have four boys. that could have been my child. you know? i don't condone violence, but when are we going to be heard as a people? >> oakland mayor jean quan criticized vandals who dishonored the memory of trayvon martin by engaging in violent activities. in san francisco, protestors picked a busy tourist spot to have their voices heard. kpix 5's don knapp has a look at yesterday's demonstrations in the city. >> reporter: crowded with tourists and shoppers about the busiest spot on san francisco's market street. and that's probably why trayvon martin's supporters chose this place to deliver their message. >> this is a system that doesn't give a damn about a black life, a brown life, about a poor life. this whole system is going to take you down. >> reporter: demonstrators were angry and loud voicing their disagreement with the not guilty verdict in the trial of george zimmerman. many claim the trial was something more about the black teenager shot to death. >> the next thing to prevent more trayvon martins is to attack that system, to attack the root cause that every 28 hours a black person is killed by a police officer, security guard or some other similar individual. >> reporter: some of those demonstrating here had protested in san francisco's mission district after the decision came down on saturday. only a few police officers were seen in the crowd. many more remained out of sight ready for violence and vandalism. after a half hour of protests, demonstrators marched up powell past astonished tourists waiting in line at the cable car turnaround and onto union square. then through the downtown area and on to justin herman plaza near the ferry building. >> justice for trayvon martin! [ screaming ] >> reporter: though noisy and angry, the protestors remained peaceful eventually dispersing. it was over but one said the protests would not be just a one-day event. in san francisco, don knapp, kpix 5. president obama called trayvon martin's death a tragedy but urged calm reflection in light of the verdict. meanwhile, the justice department says it will resume looking into the possibility of charging zimmerman with a federal hate crime. the department began its investigation last year but suspended it after the state of florida filed criminal charges against zimmerman. 4:35 now. this morning, police and volunteers will continue their search for 21-month-old daphne webb in oakland. the toddler's father reported her missing on wednesday and as kpix 5's linda yee tells us, the focus is now on other places the father and his daughter went together. reporter: sheriff's department search teams cons trade in the leona canyon preserve a popular hiking spot in the oakland hills looking for anything that could give them a clue where 21-month-old daphne webb could be. >> basically, looking through debris piles or anything of that nature that we see. >> reporter: based on your experience, that could be where somewhere could hide a body if they wanted to get rid of it? >> it could be anything. it's evidence. it's anything that looks -- that blends in with the normal trash that's out in the environment. >> reporter: she has been missing since wednesday. john webb told police someone kidnapped his daughter after he left her in his car with his mother, who suffers from dementia. he went into a supermarket on 79th and international boulevard. police say they are now searching places throughout oakland where the father may have taken his child. this particular sight happens to be the area in the hills behind the apartment complex where webb lived with her. >> anything is possible at this point. she could have wandered off and being that the area that she lived around is a wooded area as you can see, so we asked them to conduct a search for us. >> reporter: this isn't any specific tip you got that she could be buried in these hills? >> no. >> reporter: the father was briefly jailed on child endangerment charges. he hasn't been named a suspect. is the trail getting colder with each day she is missing? it's harder to find her? >> that is the common belief. but i refuse to believe that myself. we would hope and think that she is still out there and we can find her. >> reporter: so far nothing turned up in the oakland searches. linda yee, kpix 5. >> oakland police urge anyone with information about daphne's disappearance to give them a call. time now to check in on the weather. >> it looks like a cooler start to the week as we head out. we are going to see changes coming up in the next couple of days. today starting out very gray in much of the bay area. thick enough that we're seeing drizzle along the coastline and inside the bay. the temperatures now mainly in the 50s. we have mostly cloudy skies. concord reporting some clear skies right now but a strong wind gusting to 33 miles per hour at fairfield. so a good onshore push. you can see low clouds and fog that have filled into the bay some drizzle out at the coastline early on. and then by the afternoon, we'll squeeze in some sunshine. temperatures still going to warm up nicely into the 80s inland. we'll see a lot of 60s and 70s around the bay with only partial clearing and lingering fog into san francisco about 61 degrees. there are some warmer days ahead. we'll tell roadwork. we'll show you where it is coming up. in the meantime, getting a check of your bridges, right now they are change the lanes across the golden gate bridge. that's what those flashing lights are. but southbound traffic in the commute direction even with the lane changes going on everything is still at the limit. over to the bay bridge we were seeing slight delays in the far left cash lanes. but it looks like those are gone now. so no delay getting into san francisco. it's the nimitz freeway in oakland to hayward that's where we're seeing overnight roadwork. this is live near hegenberger exit. southbound lanes may be blocked, it should wrap up in the next 20 minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. 31 students and teachers who survived the deadly asiana airlines plane crash are back home in china. they arrived in beijing saturday night and returned to their provincial capital by high-speed rail yesterday and went to their hometowns. the group planned to attend a summer camp when the plane crash-landed nine days ago. three girls from the group tied. a colorado family was sitting a couple of rows in front of girls. they said they had no warning from the pilot before the tail hit the seawall. >> i remember something crashed down from the ceiling of the airplane. and then felt my chair going backwards and then after that, i don't remember anything. >> i looked to my parents and they were on the floor. i called out their name and they moaned and i knew they were alive and i just wanted to get out of the plane. >> the mom suffered a spine injury but somehow made it to an escape slide. once outside, she found her family. she says it's a miracle they all survived. a blood drive is being held at sfo today to replenish blood supplies following the crash. the drive happens from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the arrivals level of terminal three. travelers and others are welcome and encourage to donate. there is an outside chance the bay bridge's new eastern span could open as originally planned over the labor day weekend. the bridge's seismic safety review group says the temporary fix could make the postponement unnecessary but the chair of the mtc telling kpix 5, a lot still needs to happen. >> i know the plan needs a thorough vetting. caltrans and engineers as well as independent engineers need to review it to be sure this is a plan that can work. >> caltrans says it's looking into the idea now but it stands right now the opening won't happen until december. time now 4:40. shock at the pump. what's driving gas prices up and where it's became a breakout star on the fox's show "glee" about a high school glee club in the small town of lima ohio. on the show, he had an off and on again romance with a character played by actress lea michele. the two mimicked their story line becoming a well-known couple off screen. he was scheduled to leave the hotel saturday. hotel staff entered his room shortly after noon and found him dead. the 31-year-old canadian actor had talked openly about his struggles with drugs. he went to rehab when i was 19. and then again in april. police say their investigation shows other people were in the room friday night but that monteith returned alone early saturday. >> the coroner will be determining next steps with respect to establishing cause of death. all indications are that there was no foul play. >> reporter: fox television and the producers of "glee" released a statement saying monteith was an exceptional performer and person and that they will miss him immensely. monteith's girlfriend asked for privacy during, quote, this devastating time. other celebrities tweeted their reactions. singer taylor swift said, speechless and for the worst reason. and former "glee" actress kristin chenoweth said you will be loved always. fans are shocked. >> shocking, talented and young. >> reporter: an autopsy is scheduled for monday. the woman famous for writing the harry potter novels has apparently worked her own magic. she wrote a detective novel but nobody knew it was her. she penned the cuckoo's calling about a war veteran turned private investigator under the name robert galbraith. it was a hit with critics when it came out in april and word has just gotten out that was rowling who wrote it. she wished the secret could have lasted longer because using a pseudonym had looks like we'll be cooler to start out this week but as we get into the middle and later week, high pressure will build in and temperatures will warm up. this afternoon, 76 in san jose. 59 cool breezy into pacifica. east bay numbers up into the 70s even some mid-80s the warmer spots like livermore also into brentwood. inside the bay maybe a couple of lingering clouds into san francisco about 61 degrees and cool there. 64 degrees in santa rosa and about 67 degrees in oakland. next couple of days, we are going to see some cool temperatures but then wednesday high pressure starts to build this is a 20-minute drive time now on westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze. mass transit 20 bart trains on time no delay. muni caltrain and ace train number 1 all good to go. a live look outside what it looks like across the golden gate bridge. last time we showed you this you saw the lane chang traffic with flashing lights moving by everything should be normal now for the commute. so there should be four southbound lanes two in the northbound direction and everything is moving at the limit out. to the east bay now here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic heading into san francisco right now looks good. obviously no metering lights at 4:48 this morning. and oakland here's a live look near 66. we move this camera around showing you a little farther north these taillights that's traffic moving north towards downtown oakland. 15 minutes is that drive time between 238 and the maze. that's the latest "timesaver traffic." back to you. 4:49. the cost of gas could go up 15 cents a gallon in the next couple of weeks. some analysts say the big reason is the rising cost of crude oil and here are the current local gas prices for the metro area according to gasbuddy.com. regular unleaded averages $3.96 in san jose. here in the cities $4.07 and in oakland $3.97. these prices roughly 25 cents higher than a year ago. someone who bought a powerball lottery ticket in the bay area is $2.6 million richer. state lottery officials say the ticket was bought in san francisco at the cable car wine and spirit grocery on clement street. lawrence seems to think it's him. but the tickets match the five main numbers in saturday night's draw. 2, 8, 22, 35, and 37. but it did not match the powerball number, 6, which would have made the ticket worth more. the monsters versus robots action flick pacific rim. in this morning's healthwatch, the amount of time parents spend watching television may be the biggest influence on how much their children watch. researchers interviewed more than 1500 parents of grade schoolchildren and they asked about family viewing habits and rules as well as locations of tvs in the house. parents watch tv four hours a day and those who watch more also have children who watch more. people with type 2 diabetes may have increased risk of cancer due to genetics. a new study from france says a genetic mutation linked to cancer is four times more common in people with type 2 diabetes tha the rest of the population. it happens mostly with older patients researchers in florida say they developed an experimental drug that could someday lead to improved exercise endures. it boosts metabolism in the liver. lab mice given the drug were able to run 50% faster and longer. the findings could eventually help people who "sue ad-libs" "sue ad-libs" "sue ad-libs" ,, following george zimmerman's acquittal. i'm sue kwon in san mateo and i'll tell you about the high-tech tool that firefighters use to pinpoint a tricky fire. >> intense emotions following george zimmerman's acquittal. how some of the protests turned ugly in the bay area. >> plenty of clouds a cool start to the week. when will we warm up? we'll talk about that coming up. >> and san mateo bridge is off to a great start this morning out of hayward. coming up, we'll update you on some overnight roadwork. good morning, everyone. it's monday, july 15. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is nearly 5:00 now on this monday. and we begin with some breaking news in san mateo. fire at a condo complex destroyed six homes overnight. firefighters still at the scene on bridge point parkway and kpix 5 reporter sue kwon is there with the latest. >> reporter: you can hear some of the breakdown of the debris right now but for the most part the fire is out. at around 1:00 this morning they were called out to the scene here at 2201 bridge point parkway an apartment complex. what happened was residents woke up to the smell of smoke and then fire alarms going off. apparently on the second floor somewhere, there was a dryer vent that had a fire in it electrical or lint fire, which sent smoke up the vent system into the walls and up to the third floor. now, residents were evacuated. this impacted about six units. at the same time the alarms went off, so did the sprinklers. firefighters had to use a special thermal imaging camera to pinpoint the heat in the walls. once they located the fire, they knocked a hole through and got the flames out. and right now, it sounds like there's a lot of noise and saw action to get some of the debris out of the way. all of the residents who were evacuated were let back in except for those in six units directly impacted by the sprinkler water damage and, of course, the smoke damage, as well. no injuries here, very fast response from san mateo. the foster city san mateo and other fire units all called in from the area so all in all a very resourceful and successful evening here fighting this apartment fire. reporting live in san mateo, now back to you. [ screaming ] across the country, protestors took to the streets angry about the acquittal of george zimmerman. this is los angeles where about 200 protestors took over interstate 10. they blocked traffic in both directions for about a half hour last night. marlie hall joins us from sanford, florida, where it's clear the zimmerman fallout is not over yet. marlie. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. the case that started right here in sanford has thousands marching and rallying in protest. reporter: more rallies are planned today as thousands have taken to the streets to protest the verdict in the george zimmerman trial.
