care of your brother or he's next. it was apparently a message to the family's youngest son. we are expecting san jose police to finally give us more details about this case today. but thanks to some good detective work by the san jose police, got a big break in the case. we're live in downtown san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. a former san francisco police lieutenant is charged with hindering the investigation of another officer suspected of rape. curtis liu is accused of lying to investigators and making false statements on a police report. he allegedly did it to help a former officer jason lai. both worked in the sunset district. lai has been charged with sexual assault. during the rape investigation, police uncovered racist and homophobic text messages allegedly exchanged between the men and two other officers. liu retired and laree signed. turning our attention to the race for the white house now the presidential hopefuls are setting their sights on california now. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in the newsroom with the latest on who is coming to town. anne. >> reporter: the whole circus is coming to town at least on the republican side. [ chuckling ] but first donald trump will speak in southern california today in costa mesa just one day before the state gop convention kicks off in burlingame. winning california would help trump win the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the republican nomination for president. lately he is sounding more presidential speaking critically of the country's current stance on foreign policy and speaking directly to isis. >> i have a simple message for them. their days are numbered. i won't tell them where and i won't tell them how. >> we do have some new details on a campaign office for democratic front-runner hillary clinton. [ chuckling ] >> it's opening today in oakland. volunteers will be phone banking there through the june primary. mayor libby schaaf is going to be at the evening opening ceremonies. that's at 5:30 at the office on 14th street in oakland but starting tomorrow the focus is certainly going to be on the republicans here in the bay area together in burlingame. trump is speaking tomorrow afternoon. john kasich that evening. and ted cruz will speak on saturday afternoon. >> a lot of voters amped about this. the focus here on california shows just how important that june 7 primary will be. >> yeah. california holding the last primary in the country. we have 172 delegates up for grabs but they are going to be divided between california's congressional districts which means the candidates will have to bounce all over the state to try to collect each vote. back to you. >> thank you. after ted cruz chose carly fiorina as his running mate the twitter verse lit up from an unlikely source senator barbara boxer from her personal account. she wrote tweets like, quote, i predict that the latest carly fiorina merger will be as successful as her last one. or this one. quote, cruz fiorina equals a perfect match. he wants to ship immigrants out and she is a champion at shipping jobs out. kpix 5 political analyst melissa caen says the tweets are fitting for a senator ending her career. >> reporter: it's a beautiful thing to be liberated by not having to run for election again. [ laughter ] >> reporter: not that she would necessarily lose many votes by going after a republican. but she clearly is feeling like she can say whatever she thinks. >> senator boxer and the former head of hewlett-packard went head to head in 2010 which boxer addressed in another tweet, quote, cruz thinks fiorina will help in california. maybe he doesn't know carly left after she lost by a million votes. it is 6:04. time for a quick check of traffic with gianna. >> let's jump to the roads now. we have double trouble along 580 westbound. a stalled big rig accident stuck in lanes. traffic hazard near flynn with the number three lane blocked causing a delay there. past that you see another accident. it's at airway. three cars involved. it is over to the right shoulder but we have a backup building behind it. once you get past that, it gets better though. traffic is actually okay most of the delays being held back with that accident and that stall. so if you head towards 680 you won't have any problems connecting once you get past airway over towards the dublin interchange. bay bridge metering lights are on turned a little earlier. we have had a couple of trouble spots past the toll plaza. everything now cleared. you are backed up into the maze. so 580 westbound to 880 delays toward the bay bridge. injury accident eastbound 12 at oakmont left lane blocked lots of activity there on scene avoid the area if you can. >> good morning, everyone. yesterday we had high temperatures from 59 degrees in san francisco to 69 in santa rosa and today we can tag about 10 degrees on. 10 degrees on to our numbers away from the bay into our inland areas. we are looking out from the pyramid towards angel island and alcatraz. the waters are calm. we have a small craft advisory in effect outside the gate. temperatures 47 degrees in santa rosa, 47 degrees now throughout the tri-valley. it's in the mid-50s in oakland. area of low pressure that produced anywhere up to about a quarter inch of some locations yesterday like in hayward and now over las vegas. high clouds but overall mostly sunny skies and you will feel the difference a day makes with bright sunshine a bit of a breeze however along the peninsula. gusty at the coast. bright sunshine approaching 80 in the saint helena area. we have the pollen report. levels are going up. we'll talk about that coming up shortly. it's going to take another battle to open a beach. the owner of the land has blocked access since 2009 with a locked gate and no trespassing sign at martins beach. the previous property owner wanted public access to the beach the new owner doesn't have the authority to change that. the board is expected to approve a revised $64 billion plan for the bullet train to shift the central valley starting point to merced and add a station near bakersfield. the first leg is supposed to stretch from san jose to the central valley at a cost of $21 billion. that would start operating in 2025. the board will meet this afternoon in sacramento. bart is explaining its latest mishap one of the brand- new train cars crashed into a sandbarrier. chopper 5 was over the hayward testing facility last week as crews dug the car out. bart now says the car's braking system lost power after a door slammed shut on a cable. >> as a result, that system shut off and locked out. >> the auxiliary braking system also ran out of fluid. the car was only traveling 5 miles an hour at the time of the crash. it was not damaged. happening today talks to build a stadium near the vegas strip and potentially move the oakland raiders there. the l.a. daily news reporting that raiders owner mark days of will be in las vegas for a -- davis will be in las vegas for a meeting about plans to build a 65,000-seat stadium. he will offer a commitment for relocation if funding for the stadium project is approved. a bay area muslim man will get nearly half a million dollars after his house was trashed by police. mohammad monid filed a civil rights lawsuit after police busted into his santa clara home in the middle of the night with guns drawn in 2014. he says police mishandled his koran and other items while looking for a camera he was accused of stealing. that camera wasn't found. the charges were dropped. he is an airport customs agent. the victim in a car crash is blaming snapchat for the accident. why she claims that the app encourages dangerous driving. >> and apple is releasing a new tool that could revolutionize the healthcare industry. how doctors and patients could benefit. >> from the kpix 5 weather center, good morning, everybody. we do not have a raindrop in sight. in fact what we're looking at is a warming trend. >> and we are look at delays along 880. new reports of an accident near thornton. details coming up. ,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,, it is thursday, time now 6:12. we are looking east from san francisco all the way to mount diablo in the background there. can you see it? across the san mateo bridge delays here at least 17 minutes now for your drive time between 880 and 101. once you get on the peninsula traffic is okay. metering lights were turned on earlier this morning. we had an early backup in the cash lanes. everything is cleared as far as accidents go but you're slow out of the maze. it will be busy through the metering lights past there. extra volume across the upper deck into san francisco but traffic is moving okay. couple of things going on, on 580 westbound near isabel. that accident over to the right shoulder. another stalled big rig near flint. that's going to cause a backup anyway. you're slow out of tracy this morning. busy through there. 18 minutes altamont pass and 680. shouldn't have any trouble though connecting over to 680 itself. we have an injury accident in the santa rosa area, eastbound 12 at oakmont. use an alternate. eastbound 12 right at oakmont. the south bay northbound 101 no accidents right now. but it is 28. i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. troubling new developments in the search for the person who killed a husband and wife in their bay area home. kiet do is live in san jose where couple's son is the prime suspect. >> reporter: san jose police were quiet about a case where a killer was on the loose for four days. it turns out they were tracking the person who turned out to be their main suspect and arrested him last night. habib rabbi now facing charges of killing his parents. now, it has been a long tense week in the neighborhood of evergreen. an area known for expensive homes and good schools in san jose. friends and family were trying to get a hold of golam and shamima rabbi for days. they came to the house to find a terrible scene. the couple was shot dead, taunting messages on the walls and floors. sources didn't want to appear on camera but saw the messages described as pure evil. one line said, sorry my first kill was so clumsy. evidence technician even cut out large parts of drywall where the words were written. all week police were not calling the son a suspect and didn't know where he was. we caught up with the family friend who at the time was urging habib rabbi to talk to police. >> i want closure. i think we can shed light on what happened. that's the reason i want him to come forward. >> reporter: the victims were described as good people who were pacifica police are looking for a man accused of shooting his pregnant ex-girlfriend in the head. police are considering 25-year- old ricardo colindres armed and dangerous. but his ex-girlfriend may help track him down because she is still alive. police say that she fought him off yesterday morning at the casa pacifica apartments when he apparently tried to kidnap her. the struggle was brief. he shot her in the back of the head according to neighbors. someone helped her. now police say that the suspect is likely driving a silver toyota camry. for the first time in decades the california primary will have a huge impact on the presidential race. all the candidates are preparing for the june 7 primary. kpix 5's anne makovec reports from the newsroom. anne, donald trump is coming to town. >> reporter: his campaign says that the bay area, sillicon valley, has the economic force of california, is the perfect place for trump to play the capitalist card. california has 172 delegates, and donald trump will speak in costa mesa today in southern california. he is then heading to burlingame to speak at the gop state convention tomorrow. a lot of voters looking for more solid plans from trump. yesterday, he talked about foreign policy. >> the countries we are defending must pay for the cost of this defense. and if not, the u.s. must be prepared to let these countries defend themselves. we have no choice. >> and on the democratic side, hillary clinton focusing on california trying to lock in the nomination before the national convention. today a new campaign office opens also to the north in santa rosa, we do have a clear slot right now. it will be mostly sunny in the bay area, 75 degrees concord, clayton and walnut creek. low 70s in oakland. temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s around the peninsula. northwest breeze 10 to 20. but gusting up to 30 along the seashore into the 60s. inland 80s. upper 70s in santa rosa, guerneville and occidental. 80 also napa and pretty much into sonoma and glen ellen areas and upstream we go again 80 degrees outside number in saint helena. but wait! it gets warmer this weekend. those details coming up at 48 minutes after the hour. okay. gianna, what problems up now? >> we have a problem in san bruno. unfortunately, it is a traffic alert. east el camino real on to 80 the on-ramp is shut down eastbound to 380. big, big on its side trailer and vehicle itself, big rig on its side, trailer and vehicle itself. noninjury so that's good news. but it's going to take a big tow truck to get this off the freeway and in the meantime you have a couple of options here. if you need to get on 380 eastbound is open. just the on-ramp from el camino real is shut down. you can use 380. use san bruno avenue though over to 280 north to get on 380 itself. or use surface streets if you are trying to get to 101. eastbound 380 is open. the on-ramp is shut down for the accident. south 880 past thornton, some good news here. that accident is now cleared over to the right shoulder. but you have a backup behind there. slow-and-go conditions if you are headed towards the dumbarton bridge this morning. 30 minutes to go from 238 to the 84 on the southbound side of the nimit freeway. delays on the san mateo bridge, as well. traffic heating up 580 near north flynn a vehicle fire on the riled shoulder causing spectator slowing. it's a busy morning westbound out of tracy is this morning. it will be slow at least to where the vehicle fire is on the right shoulder in north flynn. to get past there traffic is better heading towards 680. no delays making the connector at the dublin interchange. kenny? san francisco police are trying to figure out who is to blame for a deadly crash near at&t park. it happened yesterday around noon just before the giants game. witnesses say that a bmw tried to turn left along the embarcadero when it was t-boned by an suv. a passenger inside the bmw was killed. two other people were taken to the hospital. a 99-year-old san francisco woman will get to stay in her home for now. the details are still being work out but iris canada will be able to stay in her lower haight apartment of 60 years with certain conditions. >> the judge, um, adopted his ruling today which we were okay with. we hope that miss canada is going to be able to remain in her home. obviously, at this point, she is going to have to come up with, um, payment of, um, a fee that's owed to my client or she is going to have to agree to execute paper so the building can be converted to condominiums. >> the two sides will return to court in the next 30 days. the shooter in a deadly attempted robbery in pittsburg is still on the loose. 29-year-old [ non-english language ] was killed29-year- old [ non-english name ] was shot and killed. a potentially [ indiscernible ] is growing in popularity in the bay area. it looks like like the real thing but health officials say this pill is a popular painkiller norco but contains fentanyl a dangerous narcotic. over doses have been reported in contra costa, alameda, santa clara and san francisco counties. no deaths have been linked to those cases. the dea says the fake tablets are probably made in china and smuggled into mexico and then into california. >> it's the biggest priority we have in the region right now is to take these pills off the street and to stop the people that are selling these pills that are hurting people. so we have to -- we are conducting a thorough investigation. >> health officials believe that the overdose cases are linked to norco pills sold on the streets. britain's top health officials are making a sweeping change to their stamp on ecigarettes and "vaping." britain's royal college of physicians says that the use of ecigarettes could improve the general wellness of the public. they say "vaping" and other new trends are much safer than cigarettes and say smokers should consider the switch. the governor of tennessee has signed a bill into law that lets mental health counselors refuse treatment to patients based on religious reasons. the governor says he spoke to counselors of many faiths before deciding. opponents say the law legalizes discrimination against the lgbt community. 27 people were killed in syria in an air strike at a hospital. the attack happened in a rebel- held area of aleppo yesterday. but it's unclear now who the fighter jet belonged to. reports indicated that the victims include children's, doctors and hospital guards among other groups. the conflict has grown more and we have some wheeling and dealing to lead things off with comcast buying dreamworks animation for $3.8 billion. comcast owns universal pictures and will use dreamworks to go after disney. dreamworks behind hits like shrek, "kung fu panda" and madagascar. shares in dreamworks are up on that news. facebook doing some serious heavy lifting this morning. its shares are soaring off its performance in the 1st quarter. revenue up more than 50% to about $5.5 billion, big profit, big gains in advertising revenue and facebook user base continues to rise more than 1.6 billion users around the world. the u.s. economy not looking quite so good. growth in the 1st quarter really sputtered only a .5% growth. businesses cut their inventories, they cut their spending plan. a lot of that due to weakness in the energy sector. consumer spending was up nearly 2% mostly on rising utility prices and healthcare. spending on big ticket items was down compared to a year earlier. stock market off to a sluggish hunt in the coming months. linda katehi is on administrative leave. she is accused of hiring outside consultants to clear the inn internet of video that showed campus police pepper spraying student end of it. >> many students have called for katehi to resign. that push started in 2011 when the protestors were pepper sprayed. happening today, bart's board of directors are taking up a plan to put continues. if you are taking eastbound 580 or 380 rather just a heads up. el camino real ramp to eastbound 380 is shut down at northbound 82 due to a big rig on its side. the truck and trailer both on the side so they are waiting for a tow. it is a noninjury accident but it is going to take some time to clear it. 380 itself is open. you can still get on 380 via san bruno avenue to 280. that will help you access 380 over towards 101. use that as an alternate or surface streets over towards 101. but again, el camino real shut down the on-ramp as you get on 380 this morning. looks like traffic is busy at the bay bridge. we have a trouble spot reported an accident blocking one of the toll lanes there. so busy conditions anyway as you work your way through there. it's going to be slow past
