meat processing facility. in san francisco a gas leak at fourth and folsom near the moscone center. chopper 5 is overhead as you see. a huge trench where crews are working there several streets have been blocked off and as you might imagine, it has snarled traffic in that area of san francisco. pg&e says a chunk of concrete hit a pipe yesterday and that was supposed to be fixed. it's looking to see if the same thing happened today. new at 5:00 a guilty verdict in the case of a career criminal who murdered his former girlfriend as the relationship was ending. randy alana was also found guilty of robbing sandra coke who worked as an investigator for the federal public defender's office. coke disappeared from oakland back in august of 2013. her body was found in vacaville a few days later. he showed no emotion as the verdict was read. alana and coke had an on and off 20 year relationship. prosecutors say it went sour when coke tried to end things and she accused him of kidnapping her dog. the day coke disappeared, she was out with alana looking for that dog. prosecutors say he murdered coke in the back of a north oakland motel before then dumping her body. a happy ending to an early- morning amber alert. a 6-year-old girl taken from her home in san jose was found in stockton. police say the child was kidnapped about 1:30 a.m. an amber alert was issued after the girl's mother called police saying her ex-boyfriend drove off with her daughter. that man was tracked down in stockton and police surrounded his home. he surrendered the girl what the not hurd. >> a lot was going through my mind just her being saved and getting back to her and everything being okay. >> the santa clara county sheriff's office is now taking over the investigation. developing news. the oil spill near santa barbara is much worse than initially thought. the pipeline company now says 105,000 gallons of oil spilled on the coast. that's much more than the 21,000 gallons first reported. now, to give you an idea, that's twice as big as the cosco busan spill in 2007 in san francisco bay. the onshore pipeline broke yesterday at refugio state beach. amy johnson reports. >> reporter: the strong smell of oil continues to hover here over the coastline and crews continue to clean up the oil on the beach. the coast guard recovered 6,000 gallons of oil so far. but we have also learned in the worst-case scenario, more than 100,000 gallons may have been spilled. >> we're sorry that this accidental release has happened. >> reporter: plains all american pipeline has admitted it was their 24" pipeline that spewed what's estimated at thousands of gallons of black sticky crude oil on the coast at refugio state beach yesterday. >> presently we have no estimate of the amount of oil spilled. >> reporter: santa barbara district attorney's office is investigating. d.a. joyce dudley looked at the damage. >> we'll likely be working with the attorney general's office, the u.s. attorney's office, and making a determination as to whether this is a criminal, civil or matter that was simply just an accident. >> reporter: it was just before noon tuesday that the first signs of the oil leak began to emerge. >> once we identified it was our leak it was should down immediately. >> reporter: the oil could be seen in the water and on the sand. a slick totaling about 9 miles in length. crews in white suits began the taxing clean-up while booms and vessels worked on the water clean-up. >> the spilled oil is difficult to contain and collect once it's on the water. therefore, it is likely that there will be some environmental impact including oiled birds and shorelines. >> reporter: refugio state beach was immediately evacuated and has been shut down as well as nearby el capitan. >> we're very aware of how big an impact this is on memorial day weekend and the visitors that are coming. >> reporter: for now, the focus is on the clean-up and saving wildlife affected. it's still not clear what caused the pipeline to leak. in fact plains all american pipeline says it is regularly checked and has shown no signs of weakness. in fact, it was just checked about two weeks ago and the results hadn't even come back yet. reporting at refugio state beach, amy johnson, kpix 5. >> northern california teams took off for santa barbara to help the clean-up effort. a state wildlife team from sacramento flew out this morning. the plan is to help assess the damage and aid the clean-up crews. the group plans to stay as long as they are needed. after months of heated debate, san francisco's catholic schoolteachers are no closer to a contract deal with the archdiocese. in fact, they rallied this afternoon in front of the chancery office calling for a rejection of archbishop cordileone's latest revision of the teacher handbook. it requires strict adherence to the church's teachings on things such as homosexuality and contraception both in and out of the classroom. protestors say the latest draft of the handbook is a little softer in tone but the substance is the same. >> so the good news here is that there has been some changes to this document. so it seems as if the archbishop is willing to listen to a certain degree. we wish he would listen more and really communicate with us more. >> negotiations between the archdiocese and the union are ongoing. now, in a statement today, the archdiocese said, quote, both sides are hopeful that they are closer to resolving the few remaining bargaining issues on which there is disagreement." new at 5:00 a scary moment inside the terminal today at l.a.x. [ screaming ] >> a suspect got tasered right in front of passengers! the man had been uncooperative with tsa officers at a screening checkpoint. the pushed an officer out of the way and ran toward the gate. l.a. airport police caught up to him and that's when an officer used his taser. the suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment. police say he did not have a weapon on him. a car filled with fireworks and m-80s goes up in flames in oakland. take a look at the aftermath. west macarthur on-ramp to westbound 580 shut down this afternoon. flames shooting from that black suv and that situation made much worse with the fireworks in the car. crews were able to put out the flames pretty quickly and clean- up is now under way. took most of the day for bart to recover from a shutdown caused by a mechanical problem. the train holdup started during the morning commute with a damaged receiver coil on the tracks. that was at the interchange between west oakland and 12th street stations. passengers saw hour delays. all the trains are back on track tonight. dangerous airbag recall has drivers rushing to the dealership but tonight, the new frustration for millions trying to get their million cars. julie watts reports dealerships can't keep up with the demand. >> reporter: well, dealerships has been ordered not to talk to the media. one dealer said they have had to hire 7 extra people and they had 70 repairs scheduled today alone. but those 70 people are the lucky ones who likely scheduled those appointments weeks if not months ago. most dealers say they can't get the parts. rick slides his seat back as far as he can every time he gets behind the wheel. he is terrified of his recalled takata airbag. >> 18 inches from my face is an explosive device which may or may not be there to save my life. >> reporter: the defective airbags in several makes have been blamed for at least five deaths after sending shrapnel flying into the driver's face and body but many dealers like rick's were saying, they don't have the parts to fix the recall long before takata doubled the number of recalled cars to 34 million. now more than 1 out of every 7 cars on the road may be affected. to find out if your car is one of them, simply enter your v.i.n. number at safercar.gov. only two out of ten on this row were confirmed recalls. nhtsa cautions it could be weeks before manufacturers add all the vin numbers to the recall list that could include most of the cars in this lot. but even after a car is officially recalled, it's unlikely car dealers will have the parts needed to fix it. honda did eventually find the parts to fix rick's car. and it said it would provide a loaner at no cost to others waiting on unavailable parts. but at ford you have to ask. at least in the case of the airbag recalls, it seems being the proverbial squeaky wheel can pay off. now, dealers tell us that insistent customers are often moved to the front of the line. keep in mind they order parts v.i.n. number by v.i.n. number so while they are supposed to take about two weeks to arrive, many are now back ordered indefinitely. takata promised to step up that production of those parts by september. but, you know, they still haven't definitively identified the cause so the fix might not actually work. >> i know a lot of people are frustrated they think should i disable the airbag? >> reporter: look at ehow and google it online. you can find ways to disable your airbag but many say if you disable it you're going to disable other functions. >> sure. >> that you need. so it's you know -- >> don't do that. >> six of one, half dozen of the other. you can check to see if your vehicle is affected on our website, cbssf.com. cbssf.com/recall. well, despite a busted rod, caltrans says its tests show the new bay bridge tower will function as designed. the rod is one of hundreds installed at the base to help the bridge withstand a major earthquake. caltrans noticed it last month during testing because it was about 6 inches shorter than the rest of the rods. caltrans says it's the only rod that failed a stress test. caltrans removed it and says the bridge is fine. surprising revelations douglas hughes on 6 charges that carry 9.5 years in prison. the florida postal worker exposed a major security gap when he flew through miles of restricted airspace and then landed on the capitol lawn last month. he said he was protesting the influence of big money in politics. gopro camera revealing new clues into the death of two base jumpers in yosemite. dean potter seen here in some earlier jumps was killed saturday along with his friend grant hunt. investigators say the camera mound on potter's helmet shows he may have tried to avoid hunt who had slammed into a ridge. potter hit the rocks a second later. officials are using that helmet video and witness photos rerecreate the accident. newly released documents are giving us the most intimate look yet at the final years of osama degrees so the air above it is also chilly and that chilly flow continues to spill into the bay area keeping us below average for at least the next couple of days. we'll be a bit milder on the weekend. mostly cloudy tonight. watch out for a few sprinkles and drizzle. we are going to stay chilly tomorrow and friday. and a minimal shower chance as low pressure makes a close pass. you may deal with a shower for five or 10 minutes but only a 20% chance but it's worth mentioning and it will trend milder but still below average over the holiday weekend. highs tomorrow, san francisco 61. still police say she was hit in the head at least twice as she got off a muni bus in chinatown. the 77-year-old is in the hospital with severe brain injury. a surveillance photo from the day has police
