san jose you will top off at 82. average high is 83. 60s at the beaches today. pacifica a little sunshine. 90s in the santa clara valley. 80s at the peninsula. from the 80s to 94 degrees east of the bay. the winds will rotate from the west to northwest 10 to 20. that will help clear some of the smoke out of the inland areas. we will be cloudy in stinson beach in the mid-60s. we'll be in the 70s in mill valley. then topping off at 85. if you want heat go not far reaches -- to the far reaches of the north bay, 101 in ukiah. a minor change in the forecast. i have those deals coming up. we have actually a chp traffic alert for a fatal crash -- excuse me, first let's get to the nimitz freeway where there was a car fire, now it's on the shoulder and the fire department has put that out so there was some spectator slowing. highway 9 lane closed in the area, use 17 as an alternate. this was the traffic alert. earlier a fatal crash, unfortunately. carquinez bridge to the maze to the maze, westbound 27 minutes. toll plaza looking clear. in just a few hours, hundreds of court workers have plans to strike outside the hall of justice. kpix 5's maria medina reports from the courthouse reporter: this is going to be a much different story in a couple of hours. at 7:00 nearly 400 santa clara court workers plan to strike. they say they deserve more pay. now, the court is offering them a 5% increase and six months later another 5%. but the union workers say they want three increases because the last time they saw a pay hike was nearly a decade ago. the court says they can't afford it, they are $5 million in the red and the workers say if that's true, why were so many high level employees given raises and how did they build a new courthouse? they simply say enough is enough. >> unfortunately, to live in this valley, you need some decent living wages and it's been eight years since our last raise. and we feel at this time that we cannot afford to live under these circumstances anymore and work in this area. >> reporter: so negotiations stalled in june and that's why they plan to strike today. many of them are clerks, countywide. so again, this morning, they plan to strike at 7:00 right -- just a few feet away from me. court operations will be scaled back. they say expect delays and longer wait times. if you have jury duty, they say check n and as far as crim -- they say check in. and as far as criminal proceedings, they will do the best they can. maria medina, kpix 5. it was a wild kidnapping for ransom case that made headlines around the world. at first vallejo police called it a hoax. and now we know why. new court documents show a lead investigators didn't believe the victims' account because its outlandish nature. denise huskins was kidnapped last march. her boyfriend's account of the ordeal contained odd details like the abductor was wearing scuba gear and took their blood pressure. police say another red flag was that when she was found she didn't act like a victim. >> it's just outrageous that officers would go out and continue to do this after they had been through. >> denise and her boyfriend filed a defamation suit against the officers for calling the experience a wild goose chase. the officers hope to have the suit thrown out. [ pause ] [ no narration ] right now, police are looking for two men who reportedly shot someone in broad daylight. it happened yesterday afternoon near the arroyo bike trail in livermore. officers say the two confronted a 25-year-old man shot him in the stomach and then ran off. the victim is in critical condition. there are no suspects and no descriptions. police say it's an isolated incident. officers need your help tracking down this woman. the palo alto police department says she robbed a bank. she reportedly hit the star one credit union on el camino real yesterday morning. a teller says she handed them a note demanding money. she did get some of the cash and then ran off. looks like san francisco's homeless crisis solution won't be funded by tech tax revenue. but the decision could end up on the november ballot. the measure would have taxed larger tech companies 1.5% of their annual payroll. the bill's sponsors says it was an effort to get them to pay "their fair share." it would have been funneled into homeless services. the proposal was shot down monday by business leaders and the mayor. the backers plan to fight until the decision is up to voters in november. in the presidential race, some prominent republicans are announcing their support for democrat hillary clinton. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live from the newsroom to explain their rationale. reporter: the most recent party defector is hewlett- packard executive and former candidate for california governor meg whitman now intending to vote for hillary clinton. in a facebook post she said trump's reckless and uninformed positions on issues from immigration to our economy to foreign policy have made it clear that he lacks both the policy depth and sound judgment required as president. the snubs go both ways. donald trump gave an interview to the "washington post" withholding endorsements for house speaker paul ryan and arizona senator john mccain referring to speaker ryan, trump telling the post, we need very strong leadership and i'm not quite there yet. about senator mccain, trump said he has not been a big fan because of the way he treats veterans. president obama challenged republican leaders to take to stand. >> if you are repeatedly have to say in very strong terms that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him? >> the democratic party still faces its own internal struggles. three more top officials at the democratic national committee resigned tuesday in the wake of of the committee's email hack. back to the republicans, new york congressman richard hannah says he is also planning to vote for clinton. he by the way is not running for re-election. live in the newsroom, anne makevoc, kpix 5. is there any indication that whitman is planning to throw money into this campaign? >> reporter: yes. she hasn't said how much but said she would provide a substantial donation to clinton's run and whitman used to be a top republican donor so when she says substantial, she usually means it. >> thank you. the father of a u.s. soldier killed in combat is continuing his criticism of donald trump. khan first gained national attention while speaking at the domestic disturbance. democratic national convention. yesterday khan called trump a draft dodger. >> he wants to be the leader, commander-in-chief of this united states of america, you had your chance. you skipped. you dodged the draft. >> the comments were in response to a story in the "new york times." the report indicated trump avoided the vietnam war draft through one medical deferment and four student deferments. trump said yesterday he regrets not serving in the military and accepted a purple heart from the military veterans. president obama and first lady michelle obama were dressed to the nines last night for a state dinner with the prime minister of singapore. the party celebrated five decades of diplomatic relations between the u.s. and singapore. over 3500 american companies have some kind of presence there. singapore was also the first country in southeast asia to join the fight against isis. there's a new push this morning to stop the dmv from suspending driver licenses of low income people who fail to pay traffic fines. advocates for the poor sent a letter to the dmv demanding they stop the unfair practice. licenses can be suspended for failed court appearances but many can't afford them. driving is a source of income for so many in the bay area and suspending that right further entrenches residents into poverty. today the san francisco police department is having a ceremony. a horse named gunny is getting to retire at the age of 19. sfpd is so proud of his work fighting crime, the acting police chief is giving him a bucketful of apples and carrots. but the ceremony also involves a very special tradition. gunny's shoes will be nailed above the bar's front door along with the horseshoes of six other horses who helped keep the city safe. so thank you to gunny. >> happy retirement. [ laughter ] traffic is probably not as controversial. heading to berkeley, westbound 80 through berkeley there was some roadwork that was getting some late clearing there. it's causing a backup but there's clearing up on the way to the bay bridge, cars moving about 19 miles per hour so keep that in mind and then to the bay bridge toll plaza, cars moving smoothly carquinez bridge to the maze westbound taking you about 25 minutes. and then altamont pass, usually our normal trouble area, cars moving 32 miles per hour. you can see the yellow and the red. altamont pass to 680 westbound will take you about 16 minutes and then golden gate bridge four lanes going south are open. so that should be pretty easy- going into the city. and then all trains and mass transit are good. no delays. ro? >> reporter: pretty interesting. so, if you have a court hear they say you may be told to come back and as far as criminal proceedings, suspects who are expected to face a judge today, they say they are going to try to do those as best as they can. back to you. >> thank you. firefighters have their hands full this morning at the scene of a wildfire in napa and yolo counties. it started near lake berryessa late yesterday and quickly grew to 1700 acres. evacuations are in effect at the canyon creek campground near winters and residential area known as golden bear estates. the fire is burning near monticello dam, which is on the southeastern edge of lake berryessa. they are trying to get more firefighters on scene. >> there's fires all over the state now so we are trying to get resources. everything is dry because of the drought. >> the fire forced the closure of state highway 128 in the area. there's no indication of when it will re-open. firefighters say that an illegal camp fire is to blame for a deadly wildfire in monterey county. it was abandoned when two hikers came across it last month. the soberanes fire is currently burning more than 44,000 acres, hundreds of evacuations and dozens of homes have been destroyed. one man died when he was working on a dozer last week in the fire battling the blaze. the fire is 25% contained. it could take a month to get it under control. new information about a crash-landing at dubai international airport. passengers aboard the emirates airlines flight say the pilot came on the loudspeaker minutes before the crash to say there was a problem with the landing gear. all 300 passenger and crew were evacuated through the emergency exit. no one was hurt. time check 5:33. let's get a check of weather with roberta. >> i'm pulling up our live weather camera looking across the bay bridge towards the port of oakland and for the first time this week, seeing some clearing at this very early hour. >> good. >> in fact, let's share that particular view with you at this time. good morning, everybody! this is the scene looking out again from san francisco due east and we have the skies clearing from that thin layer of low clouds and fog. it is clear in santa rosa and as a result, 49 degrees in comparison to 60 in livermore. it's now fallen to 57 in san jose. these are the numbers that will be reported in our weather books later today. temperatures near seasonal: sunshine at the beaches, 70s and 80s at th peninsula. 90 gilroy. 82 santa clara to san jose. that's spot on for this time of the year. then in the eastern portion of our bay area and just like the santa clara valley we'll have a pollution in the atmosphere during the afternoon hours with the smoke from the fire to the south of us. otherwise, 80s and 90s will be common. 94 in brentwood. north bay numbers 64 in bodega bay to 83 in napa and 84 degrees towards the glen ellen area. we have the full forecast coming up at about 48 after the hour but first here's roqui. >> thank you, ro. not much going on right now, pretty slow time now 5:35. metering lights came on around 5:30. the maze downtown to westbound will take 11 minutes but that total traffic is not looking pretty. then altamont pass to 680, westbound will take but 17 minutes. but there is a crash coming out of the interstate 205 to 580 causing delays, about 29 miles per hour. and then san mateo bridge 880 to 101 westbound will take about 13 minutes. you can see the cars are moving but there is some delays -- there are some delays going up there, as well. authorities are trying to figure out what led to a fatal crash on highway 99 in merced county. five people were killed and more than 20 others injured when the northbound charter bus ran into a sign pole that happened about 3:30 yesterday afternoon between atwater and livingston. it took more than 15 hours for the california highway patrol to fully re-open highway 99. the bus was headed from mexico by way of los angeles to washington state. the bus was nearly split in half when it hit that sign. [ speaking spanish ] >> i woke up and he was lying on the floor. and i think it crashed into a post. the bus was split open and that's how i got out. >> the bus was about to get a driver change in livingston when the accident happened. the driver is among those injured. in los gatos, a story of locals versus an app. council members have just approved several street closures this summer so they can't be used as waifs shortcuts. it will be cut for several weekends this summer. it will be saturday and sunday in august and the labor day weekend. the idea is to prevent the heavy traffic that builds up when drivers use waze for shortcuts. the traffic is unbearable according to the neighbors. [ inaudible ] >> we have never seen traffic this bad in the whole time we have lived there. >> council members are eager to gather data from the closures because they may consider permanent closures on south santa cruz avenue. a new warning this morning for any pg&e customer. a customer in half moon bay lost more than $4,000 when they got a scam letter in the mail that said the bill was past due and they must send a prepaid money card to pay it off. if you have a question about the bill, call pg&e before praying some republicans are crossing party lines supporting hillary clinton. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live from the newsroom to explain why they are abandoning the republican party. >> hillary clinton picked up the support of republican meg whitman who raised a lot of money for the gop, a hewlett- packard executive and former candidate for california governor. she says, quote, to vote republican out of the party loyalty alone would be wrong. the snubs go both way. paul ryan and john mccain are not being endorsed by donald trump in the primaries. the controversy between trump and the family of a muslim- american soldier killed in combat. a purple heart was given to donald trump yesterday. >> i always wanted to get the purple heart. this was much easier. but i tell you, it was such an honor. >> president obama criticized trump calling him woefully unfit to be president. republican congressman richard hanna announced he will vote for hillary clinton. he said it's not enough to simply denounce his comments. he is unfit to serve our party and cannot lead this country. reflecting a cbs poll from earlier this week, a new nbc surveymonkey national poll shows clinton with an 8 point lead. in the newsroom, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >> back to meg whitman, didn't she back chris christie? >> she was his national fundraising chair when he was running for president but then when he endorsed trump after dropping out, she cut ties accusing christie of a, quote, astonishing display of political opportunism. >> thank you. trump was also involved in a more lighthearted controversy yesterday when a baby started making noise at a virginia rally. >> don't worry about that baby. i love babies. i love babies! i hear that baby crying, i like it. i was kidding. get that kid out of here. i love having a baby crying while i'm speaking.
