of the shooter to be suicide. >> reporter: authorities now say chris harper mercer died by his own hand shooting and killing himself after exchanging gunfire with police. >> the suspect is down. >> reporter: a newly released timeline shows the shooter was down 10 minutes after the first call to 911. >> to the families of the victims, our hearts are with you. >> reporter: authorities say the gunman killed nine people whose ages range from 18 to 67. 16-year-old cheyenne fitzgerald was among the nine people injured. she lost her kidney. >> she was shot through the back and it clipped her lung. >> reporter: anna boylan was sitting next to her. the family says the shooter singled out his victims based on their religion. >> he was asking people what their religion was if they were christian and when he would stand them up and if he said they were christian he said they will be with god soon. >> reporter: the shooter left a document with one of the students to hand over to police. it could offer more insight. it was a rant of someone mad at the world feeling like a loser without a girlfriend, hatred of black men and going out in a blaze o glory. they found another gun. and that brings the total number of weapons found in the case 14. weapons found in the >> chris, the students must be going through a rough ordeal. what's being done to help them? >> reporter: yeah, it's not just the students in fact. it's a lot of people in the community. with that, they have set up a number of areas here around town where people can get free counseling, a hotline has also been set up and then beginning monday, there will be some counseling available here at the school for students and faculty although the school itself will be closed for the week. >> chris martinez in roseburg, oregon, thank you. and we have more now on 16- year-old cheyenne fitzgerald whom chris mentioned in his story. she was shot in the back and remains in critical condition after having a kidney removed. her family says she is studying to be a nurse. they describe how she survived. >> when this incident occurred, she laid down on the ground and played dead. and -- [ sigh ] -- that saved her life. >> healing is going to be slow. but i know my daughter is very strong and she is going to get through this. >> thursday was cheyenne's fourth day of college. her mother says she is beginning to talk now but she is still jumpy when she hears a noise. one student who was in the classroom is being called a hero. he is 30-year-old chris mintz an army veteran. his family says he was shot seven times while trying to stop the gunman and survived. >> tried to block the door to keep the gunman from coming in, gets shot three times, hits the floor, looks up at the gunman and says, it's my son's birthday today, gets shot two more times. >> chris will be okay but he faces a long recovery, as well. a "go fund me" page has family started requesting $10,000 for medical expenses has already raised more than half a million. overseas now at least 19 people are dead following air strikes that hit a hospital in afghanistan. u.s. forces were conducting an operation in the area at the time. many of those killed worked with the humanitarian group doctors without borders. kpix 5's anne makovec with the angry response to the bombings. >> reporter: this building was a busy working hospital before today the only hospital in the city of kunduz, afghanistan. now it's virtually abandoned while small fires continue to burn inside. doctors without borders, or [ non-english language ] has been treating victims of violence and disease here for years. but in an instant it was too late to help many of their own. just after 2 a.m., local time, bombs started dropping on to the facility even though hospitals and medical personnel are explicitly protected under international humanitarian law. afghan troops have been fighting the taliban here with the backing of the american military. the fighting has intensified this week. today a spokesman for u.s. forces in afghanistan said in a statement that u.s. forces conducted an air strike there overnight, quote, against individuals threatening the force and said that the strike may have caused collateral damage to a nearby medical facility. [ non-english language ] >> reporter: a spokesman for the afghan interior ministry called it a clearance operation and said the commission appointed to assist the affected victims is doing its job. doctors without borders is calling the attack abhorrent and a grave violation of international humanitarian law. in a statement, its president said, we cannot accept that this horrific loss of life will simply be dismissed as collateral damage. anne makovec, kpix 5. >> defense secretary ashton carter had this reaction. i want to extend my thoughts and prayers to everyone affected. a full investigation into the tragic incident is under way and coordination with the afghan government. just a half-hour ago red flag warning in effect for the parts of the east bay and north bay meaning high fire danger. this map showing us where the danger areas are. the high fire danger is the result of high winds and warmer temperatures. the warning stays in effect through 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. and in lake county only a few firefighters remain at the "valley fire." it's expected to be fully contained by early next week. it burned more than 100 square miles, killed four people and destroyed nearly 2,000 buildings. and no relief in sight for the soggy east coast. flooding has turned deadly and more rain is on the way. >> also, a shocking announcement at tonight a priest at the vatican is stripped of his duties after announces he is gay. monsignor krzysztof charamsa made his announcement today a day before a major church meeting that will define the church's teaching on family. the priest wants to challenge the church's doctrine on homosexuality. he says he is in a relationship and he is happy and proud of his identity. the vatican called his actions serious and irresponsible. the east coast may dodge the full wrath of hurricane joaquin but some places are still dealing with the record setting rains and also destructive flooding. cbs reporter weijia jang says even more bad weather is on the way. reporter: a number of areas in charleston, south carolina, are flooded by as much as several feet of water stranding cars and effectively shutting down the city. >> what we want to do is help people get through this next two days with no one getting hurt. >> reporter: the high waters are affecting parts of the city that don't usually flood. >> normally with the storms, you know, we have a little water on the streets. what we have now, this is a disaster. if you are coming downtown you need an inflatable boat in the trunk of your car. >> reporter: it's the same situation in florence. a coastal city near new burn as well as other parts of north carolina. heavy flooding and rain that keeps falling. >> we do have flood warnings right now primarily in the southeastern part of the state. and in the far southwestern part of the state something we didn't expect two days ago. >> reporter: here in norfolk, virginia, water hasn't receded in some areas possibly setting the stage for serious flooding when even more rain moves in over the next 24 hours. the coast guard is dealing with another emergency. a missing cargo ship that has 28 americans and 5 polish nationals on board. el faro disappeared near the bahamas while en route from jacksonville, florida to puerto rico into the path of hurricane joaquin. weijia jang, cbs news, norfolk, virginia. two deaths linked to heavy rains have been reported in the carolinas. flood watches and warnings are in effect in delaware, new jersey and maryland. well, a change could be coming to california's law banning plastic bags. an environmental group is proposing changes where the money goes collected at grocery stores. currently stores keep the fees at 10 cents a back. they wanted it redirected to a wildlife conservation fund. it has successfully collected enough signatures to put it to a vote next year. get ready. the 35th annual fleet week kicks off next week. san francisco's waterfront will be bustling with military ships and planes. it starts monday and runs for a full week. ship tours, food trucks and musical acts will be set up at the pier 80 village and the u.s. navy blue angels will launch into the sky for official shows on october 10th and 11th. fleet week began back in 1981 as way to honor the servicemen in the armed services. coming up, more than 1,000 children will need to words heard around the world 20 years ago today. oj simpson acquitted of killing his ex-wire, nicole brown simpson, his ex-wife and her friend ron goldman. more than 150 million viewers tuned in to see the outcome of the sole called trial of the century. after the acquittal in the murder trial the brown and goldman families were awarded more than $33 million in a civil suit. they have seen only a fraction of that money. more than 1500 kids will have to get revaccinated in san mateo all because of a faulty refrigerator. health officials say the broken refrigerator compromised 10 different vaccines stored at a medical office affiliated with stanford children's health. letters are being sent out to those affected. the second vaccines will be free of charge. and officials say new refrigerators will be installed at the medical group's office. a major archaeological find out of michigan this week discovered by a farmer. partial skeletons of a wooley mammoth were unearthed 10 miles southeast of ann arbor on thursday. officials from the university of michigan say it was an adult male in its 50s and lived, they say, 10 to 15,000 years ago. there's evidence humans placed remains there. >> the pieces having been brought to this place by ancient humans for storage in a pond it was their intent to come back later and retrieve this when they needed fresh meat. >> officials are now waiting for the bones to get dated. the geologic age could uncover how long ago humans were active in this part of michigan. right. brian hackney is out in the elements with mobile weather in sausalito. hi, brian. >> reporter: juliette, it is windy enough to fly an iron kite today and so we thought we better come out. there's -- by the way, stand by because i'm going to need your help later. >> i'm ready. >> okay. good. we have low pressure that's coming down from the pacific northwest. as a result it's going to be and already is very windy around the bay area to the point that we have red flag warnings post the throughout the north bay mountains and along the diablo range and as we look now at the peak wind gusts, ocean beach already up to 50-mile-an-hour gusts. mount diablo the same as well as sfo. redwood city a 34-mile-an-hour gusts and it could get windier tonight. that at least is the possibility. as a result, red flag warnings are posted until 10:00 tomorrow morning. the winds will be gusty tonight. especially at the higher elevations. northeast winds from 15 to 30 miles an hour but those gusts to 50 miles an hour maybe up to 60 in parts of the bay area. so danger with that downed trees could bring power lines down and that always introduces the possibility perhaps of some fire. now, ladies and gentlemen, as we have a live shot of the golden gate bridge, juliette goodrich is now going to tell you what the current readings are. juliette? >> okay. here we go. right now in concord, 68 degrees. same for oakland. and livermore. and san francisco, 59 degrees. san jose 67 degrees. and santa rosa 75 degrees. currently right now. brian, back to you. >> reporter: you're doing that disconcertedly well, juliette. as we have a look at high -- here's what's happening. there's low pressure that's coming down from the pacific northwest. and high pressure that's just abeam the bay area. the combination means that with that low passing through, a very strong pressure gradient and as a result, very gusty winds. and they will persist through tomorrow morning. so to sum it up, partly cloudy night with gusty winds in the bay area and how. there will be less wind by the time we get around to sunday. and we'll have a sun and cloud mix. some low clouds along the shoreline but some clouds inland as well and a little warmer tomorrow. forecast highs in santa rosa 85 degrees. 84 for napa. in fairfield 84 degrees, as well. so still plenty warm inland with temperatures in the mid- 80s. here in the city we'll have 74 in san jose 81 and the same for mountain view. the sonoma county harvest fair is happening, as well. we have the -- you know, the super bowl trophies are taking a tour of the bay area and they are going to be showing up in santa rosa at the fair with the forecast high of 85 degrees. extended forecast we'll be looking for numbers in the warmest spots in the mid-80s inland. cooling down a little bit for monday, tuesday and wednesday. bay will be in the mid-70s. along the shoreline as per usual low clouds at the shore and temperatures will be in the mid-60s. but the headline tonight gusty winds, and if anything says that better than my hair, juliette, i don't know what it would be. we'll be back to have an update at 6:30. nicely done, by the way. five blocks of entertainment starting at fruitvale and mcarthur a selection of 200 beers making it feel like the real thing. and, of course, there was plenty of german-inspired cuisine. proceeds from the event go towards projects in the diamond district. and a big day in sports and andrea nakano is here. a lot of fans were saying good- bye to a long-time baseball player. >> this is a tough weekend for the giants because first they have to say good-bye to tim hudson and then it's going to be jeremy affeldt. it's a packed home opener for the bears and we'll have more on the giants and a's and college football right after this. it's the pac-12 home opener for the bears and they are looking to do something they haven't done since 2007 going 5- 0 to start the season. they are facing ahigh-powered offense in washington state. bears leading 21-7. goff up top to kenny lawler who makes the one-handed catch and nine-yard touchdown pass and cal 21-13 after missing the point. the cougar fake the point in the second half and get near the first down marker but the ball pops loose picked up by stefan mcclure who returns it 45 yards to the house. cal down 21-20. but wazzu respond. next ball the four yard score. cougars up 8. 3rd quarter 28- 26, goff throws the fourth touchdown of the game to harris who goes 24 yards for the score. it gave cal a 34-28 lead after a two-point conversion. the bears are now 5-0 and 2-0 in the pac-12. auburn beat san jose state in other college football action. 35-21. despite another big day from tyler irvin senior running back ran for 160 yards already has a 100-yard game with the season. san jose state falls 2-3. georgia and bulldogs hosting alabama for the first time since 2008. they won't be upset if they don't cam back soon. the crimson tide dominated from start to finish. jakealabama wins 38-10. urban meyer and the top ranked buckeyes on the ropes against indiana. down 17-13, in the third, ohio state would go for it on fourth down and ezekiel elliott does a little more than that. he goes 65 yards to put ohio state back on top. elliott finished with 274 yards and three touchdowns. and that made this buckeyes fan very happy. the hoosiers though would rally back in this one and have a chance to tie it in the final seconds but a bad snap on fourth and goal sent the hoosiers all the way back to the 30-yard line. the desperation heave is knocked down and ohio state hangs on to beat indiana 34-27. and the buckeyes have won 18 straight dating back to last year. jim harbaugh joined on the sideline by his brother john as michigan visited maryland. the wolverines held the terps to 71 yards on offense and forced four turnovers. they record back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2000 and michigan was without their star running back devian smith but no problems. drake johnson stepped in and wracked up 103 total yards and two touchdowns. the wolverines beat maryland 28- 0 and are outscoring their opponents 122-14 during their four-game winning streak. to the raiders now. they are checking off things off their bucket list. they are in london. they are well on the way with a chance to match the win total from 2014. the raiders will try for their first three-game winning streak since 2011 tomorrow in chicago. the game will be a reunion for the bears head coach john fox and oakland as jack del rio who is fox's defensive coordinator in denver the last three years but del rio knows the game isn't about the coaches even if he wants it to be. >> i wish it could be us wrestling on the 50. but -- [
