ahead on 7 >> santa clara county sheriff's office hopes to get a cell phone tracking system that hasntroversy aross the country. chris nguyen has the story. >> at the santa clara county sheriff's office community members voiced concerns about a new device. a cell phone tracking system, known as a sting ray, that could be used to help locate missing high risk individuals. >> we are no intention of eavesdropping on people. california constitution is very very specific about when we can listen to private conversation. >> the sheriff's office looked into this since the disappearance of sierra lamar. they say the device would be secured by a homeland security grant to pinpoint a defined location of the person being sought. only used after obtaining a search warrant from a judge unless a life or death situation but the sheriff's office only has until may, otherwise funds will be dispersed to another community. >> we need to be familiar with what this can, and cannot do so we can set rules to it. >> this issue is shared by judge la doris cordell. >> if the judge does issue a warrant, sting ray can capture the cell phones and that is concern to me. >> the sheriff's office says it's trying to be as transparent as possible. >> if we can potentially save one life that is a victory for us and the community. >> the proposal will go for approval on tuesday. wall street lights up with word on a deal with greece granted an extension of a bail out loan, agreeing to provide a list of reforms keeping the greek budget in check. with that the dow climbed to close at a new record high. and nasdaq is the highest it's been since 15 years ago. >> well consumer news home security systems are supposed to make you safer but it doesn't take much to hack into your network. >> this hacker tested 16 smart security systems connected smoke alarms and thermostats. and he found weaknesses in all of them. >> this is how an alarm system is supposed to work. someone breaks into your home. and sets off the alarm, and the crook is caught on video. but colby moore is a professional hacker. >> we can watch what you're doing and we can shut off your video camera. and sometimes turn off your home alarm system. >> he's part of the professional team in redwood city. it bought cameras, controllers, thermostats and smoke detectors. >> on all 15 took about 20 minutes to do what we call rooting the device. we can run a code on it. >> he can hack into a thermostat and smoke detector. >> it pivots to compromise cameras. >> look implanted his logo on the device a third hacker tried to crack until it spit out the network key. >> it's as if you were in the house and another device you're on their network. >> weak pass words are where a hacker's job is easy. another is lack of encryption requiring a secret key or pass word. >> it's one reason is that security is bad these people are not security people. they don't have security background. >> seven on your side went to moore while he hacked into a home from his car, outside but could have been anywhere. hacking into a home in the bay area and then, sending someone to carry out the burglary. >> we do what we call reverse engineer the device. and to just how it works and then you can figure out how to compromise it. >> it can take weeks but once that happens, the rest can be done in seconds. took him less than 30 seconds now, watch as he disables the alarm. >> connection is established i will now disable the security. now we can go and rob the house. >> there 12 seconds is all it took. how can you protect yourself?
