>> well, i thought it was a smart idea. it was summertime. we went down on the beach with our attorney, the late and wonderful, our dear, dear friend. we go down, and he brings along his dog named claude, who was a poodle. and every time we start to get into something important, claude started humping my leg. and it went on a long time. and finally frank looked at our attorney and said you know what? claude feels about it the way i do. there will be no prenup. so we don't have one. and we got married about a month later. >> you don't really know how someone is going to react -- >> i would have given him to you yesterday, i told you. when i told you about the story that he wouldn't eat the pasta. did we get any reaction for that? tell me the one thing that was the issue and find out which issue was the common thread among all three. ask them. and that's your issue. >> most people aren't talking to them anymore. >> but if you could, they would tell you -- imagine, though if -- i didn't like him because he was too contrling. this one i didn't like because he was too money hungry. and then you have to figure out what was your issue with all of them? because you're pretty forthcoming about all that. >> it was easy to right. it was easy to write because i'm 82 now and i've been past all that stuff. >> you don't remember it anyway. >> no, i do remember. writing a book, it makes you recall certain things. >> uh-huh. >> and some of the things are painful, like my father's death, even to this day. and i was only 13 and he was 39. it still -- i did an audio version of this book that's coming out at the same time. i couldn't get through it. >> your father was an alcoholic as well. >> well, he drank too. they all drank in those days. they didn't have drugs. >> right. >> they were drinking. you know? >> your life is so fascinating. and i think there are so many interesting things people are going to take away from the book. one is -- and i didn't know this at all. that archie bunker could have been you. >> yeah. >> tell us about that. >> i just finished doing another -- i did "those big valleys" with missy stanwyck. >> yes. >> and this one i was thrown off the horse and i was on a cane, recuperating from this terrible accident, and i got a call from marianne reese, who was norman here -- don't i look a lot alike? anyway, norman here's assistant. and said gavin, come over and see. i went over to see her. i was on a cane and she said we're doing this thing, "till death do us part." she sent me a script. that was the one they did in england. she said i think you're perfect for it. it's a big hit and is going to be likable. i said i hate bigotry in any form. she said, well, this is funny. i said this is funny? >> yeah. didn't seem possible. >> she said but norman's got his eyes on carroll. you know? and so they flew me to new york. and i got a free trip to see my mother, brother, grandmother. >> but it wasn't meant to be. >> i did the whole -- it just wasn't meant to be. and i was so grateful because i knew -- i told my brother before they called me, i said, ron, i said i don't think i can -- i really just -- i just can't do that. but it worked out great for carroll. he was absolutely brilliant as that character. >> and you were brilliant as -- you wouldn't have been the captain. we only have a minute left. tell us about what happened in your faith journey. >> oh, my lord. it just has changed my whole life completely. i know i'm not alone anymore. i know what eternity means. it's like when i brought ted knight to the lord. i know when ted died in 1986 where he went. >> right. >> and i was so grateful to be used that way. i walk with jesus christ every single day, lord of my life. he gets me through everything. and patty and i are just having a great life. >> when did that happen for you? >> yes. exactly. so this is a fun costume. >> oh, wait. this is spike and ziggy. come on out. >> well, hello. >> oh, my goodness. marilyn monroe. >> if you have a diva of a dog, why not make them marilyn mutt-roe. >> blake wants a little -- >> i know. it's a really fun costume. we added some nice decolletage. bedazzled the back, gave her a little bit of a blond weave there. and lots and lots of diamonds. >> that is so cute. >> very cute. >> and the escort is nice and dapper. >> of course. let's bring out jen and dexter. this is the beach babe. >> this is a hot dog. >> oh, my gosh, a surfer. >> instead of the traditional wiener dog, this is a dog that's so hot. there he goes. and what's great about this costume is this is actually good as a last-minute costume. you already have your beach wear at home. the only thing that sort of required anything was to make the sun mask. all we did was add cardboard. >> wasting away in margaritaville. >> i love it. >> and for covering hope, we want to say hi to them. >> let's bring out debbie and erica. oh, my god. what is this? tell us. >> a monkey, organ grinder monkey. >> i can't take it. >> oh, he's going potty. oh, no. did he do it? >> he has to go. >> he can't see. >> oh, no! >> oh. >> if your little buddy is a little monkey, of course, he's right by a fire hydrant. organ grinder costume, american apparel brown hoodie and we just literally sewed on -- >> i can't do it. i can't handle it. >> what would we do without those little -- >> an accordion as well. >> everybody come on out. >> everybody's adorable. >> oh, you guys are the best. >> thank you. >> thank you so much. we need a pop of fun for your halloween -- >> we're talking about some cool cocktails coming up after this. but first, this is "today" on nbc. ♪ time to take you into "today's" kitchen for sweet treats for halloween with a pop of a little something extra for the adults. >> that's right. the kids aren't the only ones who should be having fun. so invite your friends and neighbors over because jean benedict, author of "cocktail pops and spiked frozen treats," which sounds like a great title, has something the grown-ups and the kids can enjoy. congrats on your book. >> i'm so excited to be here. i've done a lot of cocktail pop segments and you inspired me to write the book. i'm not kidding. >> really? >> i wanted to even thank you in this book but i thought i'm not going to do that. i thought it was weird. like a creeper. >> a little stalkerish. >> yeah. >> there are 50 recipes, gorgeous photos, and tips and techniques to make your pops look their best. >> okay. >> the first ones we're going to do, these are these cosmo pops. >> look how cute. >> i developed this window pane technique to make the garnish really stand out. here's how you do it. you take some sugar glue. want to do it, kathie lee? >> i was going to eat one. >> you're going to eat one? >> take some sugar glue and brush it on this little lime. and the sugar glue, there's a recipe in the book for that, too. position it on the frozen pop. >> at bottom or the top? >> at the top. basically, wherever you want the garnish to go. then here's the trick. you put like a tablespoon of pop mixture back into the mold and then you plunge it down in -- you plunge it down in. and what happens is the fixture comes up around the mold and it almost like laminates the pop. so it doesn't have that blurry embedded look. >> you have to be careful so it doesn't go sliding off. >> yeah. these with the red tharks great for a vampire party i think for halloween or -- oh, and then these pops, too. this is a kiwi-pomegranate vodka pop. it's got an eyeball for halloween. >> this is delicious. >> thank you. this is a sonic gin and tonic pop. it has a blacklight quality to it because it has b2 in it, which is riboflavin. >> we should point out that tim stack is downstairs with the black light. they glow in the dark. >> that's awesome. >> my goodness. >> that's weird! >> awesome. >> explain why they glow in the dark. >> basically a gin and tonic recipe, right? your tonic, your water, your lime. but you put these b2 capsules in it. i don't know if you can see it. >> you get cut off after three. >> you get them at the health food store. >> oh, my gosh! >> they're very strong and fun. you just mix up the recipe and then you dump in in the capsule in powdered form, you dump this right in and then it sort of dissolves. >> we only have 30 seconds, hate to say. >> pumpkin mojito pops, bubble gum boo. bubble gum pops. >> i want the mojito. >> look how pretty they are. this is like a disco zom bao party. basically, the book, $5.99 on kindle. on amazon. it's great for mocktails and cocktails. >> so great. >> so delicious. >> bye, everybody. >> i'm here to help. you and i will get through this together.
