From the look of some parking lots in San Francisco, others just gave up on Public Transportation altogether and drove their cars. All toll bridges except the Golden Gate Bridge will also be affected. Just about 90 minutes ago, federal investigators updated the probe of the deadly train accident that killed two b. A. R. T. Employees working on the tracks on saturday. Among the new details, word that the person behind the controls was in training and that the purpose of that train ride was to teach him how to operate that vehicle. Federal investigators spent about ten hours interviewing people today including the operator of the train. They say he was a trainee and he was working toward his safety certification but he did not have it. Five other people were also onboard the train at the time of the accident. Two or three were there for trouble shooting, and mechanical type operations with the trains. One was there to do training and two were trainees. Reporter federal investigators say the person operating the train was aware of an announcement that there were workers on the tracks and that he tried to stop the train but it was too late. Preliminary information we have right now puts the speed between 60 and 70 miles per hour. Okay . And there was an emergency stop of the train. Reporter b. A. R. T. Says the train was on a routine maintenance run and an automatic mode on saturday when it struck and killed 58yearold Chris Shepard of hayward and 66yearold Larry Daniels of oakland. The two men were investigating a reported dip in the tracks. One mile north of the walnut creek b. A. R. T. Station. Just after the accident, b. A. R. T. Officials said the person behind the controls was an experienced train operator, but multiple Union Officials and b. A. R. T. Employees have since identified him as a b. A. R. T. Manager who they say was in training to replace striking employees and he hadnt operated a train in more than a decade. Both of the victims families were too distraught to talk on camera today. At daniels home in the oakland hills, family members told me theyre planning a Memorial Service for possibly later this week, but that the coroner had not yet released his body. Chris shepards family told me theyre flying his body back to his hometown in new jersey where he has family and planned to have Funeral Services there. He belonged to a union that was not on strike but some of its members, including karen fwrget have joined the picket line. She recalls daniels sense of humor and shepards dedication to his work. Truckers complained that the recent changes at the port leave them waiting in their rigs for hours while they wait to unload. The last time the mayors Gang Task Force asked for suggestions from the kmcommunity, they said they needed programs targeted for girls because they were joining gangs at a much higher rate. They also needed to target children by the age of 6. A gang member that i talked with today says that the right city programs can help turn lives around. This 29yearold man who well call robert is working to leave 16 years of gang life and crime behind. He grew up in a neighborhood and family where being in a gang wasnt a way of life, it was the way of life. I grew up in a neighborhood, and we all grew up together, we stuck together. Just the way we lived. Reporter according to the mayors Gang Task Force, there are more than 6,500 verified gang members not counting their associates. There are more than 100 gangs in san jose. More than 200 in Santa Clara County. And more than half of the gang members who commit crimes are under the age of 19. The San Jose Police department is focusing a lot of resources on gang suppression and its working. Between january and september of this year, gangrelated Violent Crimes dropped by 16 over last year. The student was pointing a fun at the teacher after the teacher told him to put it down, and then the student fired a shot at the teacher and the teacher fell and everybody ran away. The two students also shot during the ordeal are recovering at a hospital tonight. The suspect apparently then killed himself. The school will remain closed for the rest of the week. Todays shooting happened while attorney general eric holder was telling the Nations Police chiefs that fatalities from active shooting incidents have soared over the past five years. You control one with your apple device and can race against friends or against a robotic car that controls itself. Reporter breast milk is a hot commodity because of its long list of benefits to newborns which is why some moms who are unable to provide their own milk hit the internet looking to buy breast milk from strangers. This unidentified buyer has a safety checklist in mind when buying breast milk online. I generally ask them what kind of medications they take, if they have any conditions i need to know about, what kind of diet they have. Reporter but that may not be enough. Investigators at nationwide Childrens Hospital in ohio tested more than 100 samples of breast milk purchased over the internet and found most of it was tainted. 64 contained staph and 36 of the samples had strep. Thats not all. Many of the samples had very, very high levels of bacterial contamination. Reporter researchers found the longer it took to ship, the more bacteria they found. Mothers milk bank in san jose provides half a million ounces of donated breast milk to infants in 13 states, but before that milk ever reaches a babys mouth, the donor is screened and must undergo a blood test for hiv and other diseases. And the screening doesnt stop there. The problem and the issue is that human milk is wonderful as is from the breast, but when you collect the milk, when you store it, and you put it away in bags and freeze it, there are all opportunities of the milk becoming contaminated with bacteria. Reporter which is why the bank pasteurizes all donated milk then sends it to the Santa Clara Countys health lab for additional bacteria testing.
