Lets show you what it looked like here a short time ago. They were loud. They were purposeful. Is may day a holiday . In San Francisco and within the immigrant community its a holiday. Hence the festivities in the civic plaza today, many of these people immigrant workers. All of them were celebrating a raise in San Franciscos minimum wage 11 . 05 to 15. Its a step in the right direction. Tell that to anyone working for minimum wage in this city that sees Everything Else going up including rents. Very hard. I have i used to have two jobs and my husband also has two jobs. And Jessica Garcia has a small child as well. She makes salad on bush street in San Francisco. A Small Business that is hiring though on the other side of this issue, owner julian chang says hed love to hire even more people. Hes an immigrant from france and says in the state where the minh yum wage minimum wage 9 12. 25 is steep. Its hard. Hard to make ends meet and hard to provide the jobs that make the ends meet and the world go around. We have to do it. We have a little one. My children didnt know what was going to happen. Laura . Hi larry. They did effectively shut down the port this morning and then they did march from the port here to city hall. This is where the march ended. There was a rally about two hours long and then everyone dispersed. Everything today was completely peaceful. The hope is it stays that way tonight. [ cheering ] reporter demonstrators began gathering early at the port of oakland for may day activity and a day thats traditionally about labor, but has morphed into something larger than that. The goal essentially herefa is to form the humanity of black people, brown people and oppressed people throughout america. Reporter after the port rally several hundred people took to the streets marching first through west oakland picking up supporters along the way. [ indiscernible ] reporter organized by labor, hundreds of signs reveal a broad mix of community concern. Working care people care deeply about what happens and theyre being mistreated. Police brutality, were losing our lives to the people who are supposed to protect and serve. Police were on hand to escort marchers and reported no incidents. I wish that we can just stay peaceful. I dont want us breaking windows and destroying our own community because that solves nothing. More events are scheduled for this evening in downtown oakland. One of those is set to begin at 7 00 downtown. The other here at 8 00 at city hall. Police do not expect any problem, but they tell us they will have extra staffing on hand to handle any potential problems. Laura anthony, abc 7 news. Now to baltimore where the family of of freddie gray is reacting to the decision to charge Six Police Officers in his death. Gray died while in Police Custody and the charges come after a police investigation. Abc News ReporterMarcy Gonzalez is live. The family says this is just the first step in seeking justice. Reporter yes larry and ama they call this a momentous day, ranging from false imprisonment to seconddegree murder. Hundreds of protesters marched from Baltimore City hall to the jail where those officers are now being held. Reporter celebrations in the streets of baltimore. Today is a momentous step on the road to justice for freddie. Reporter reacting to todays announcement from the states attorney. The findings of our comprehensive, thorough and independent investigation coupled with the medical examiners determination that mr. Grays death was a homicide has led us to believe that we have probable cause to file criminal charges. Criminal charges filed against all six officers involved in freddie grays april 12th arrest. The most serious charge seconddegree murder filed by officer Caesar Goodson where gray suffered that deadly spinal cord injury. The indictment saying gray should not have been arrested in the first place and once he was officers never put a seat belt on him and later ignored his repeated pleas for medical help. I was sickened and heart broken by the statement of charges that we heard today because no one in our city is above the law. The police union calls the prosecutors findings a rush to judgment. No officer injured mr. Gray, caused harm to mr. Gray and they are truly saddened by his death. These officers did nothing wrong. President obama praised the peaceful calls for accountability leading up to this significant step. Thats what people around the country expect. Instead of justno justice no peace, its the beginning of justice. The mayor says she has ordered the Police Commission tore suspend them all. Live in baltimore, Marcy Gonzalez, abc 7 news. Maryland made quite an impression during todays news conference. She has social media abuzz with one person saying Camilla Harris and Marilyn Mosby she is 35 years old and just took office four months ago and comes from a family of law enforcement. Her mother father and grandfather were all police officers. This is her right here with her mom about 25 years ago. She has two daughters and is married to the city councilman who represents the neighborhood where freddie gray was arrested. Mosby said today that is not a conflict of interest. She says its her duty to uphold the law in every neighborhood. Police departments across the country will get help to keep an eye on their officers as well as the suspects theyre arresting thanks to the department of justice. This morning it launched a 20 Million Program to help Police Departments big and small purchase 50,000 body cameras. The American Civil Liberties union and privacy attorneys have expressed some concern for officers wearing those cameras as well as people being recorded by police.
