heavy mist on the golden gate bridge tonight, but this is a prelude of what we will see by the end of the weekend. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson. abc news meteorologist sandhya patel joins us with a look at what is ahead. >> carolyn and dan, what's ahead is a storm. let's look at the big changes that are coming. the storm is in the development phase. the area of low pressure in the gulf of alaska will join together with this moisture north of hawaii. the storm is developing and will get here this week end. i will show what you it looks like at this hour. the marine layer has ramped up that has brought the cooling. it has extended into the bayside communities tonight. and as you look at the temperatures at this hour, they are in the 50s and the 60s. big changes ahead as i mentioned. i'll let you know if the wet weather, first significant rain of the season and the snow in the sierra will impact your weekend plans in a few minutes. carolyn? >> thank you. happening now the san mateo bridge is shutdown, and that means tens of thousands of people will have to make other plans to get across the bay. you are looking live at the san mateo bridge with not a car on it. thomas roman is on the bridge and could these weather changes affect their work there? >> that's right, carolyn. the tow plaza went through about 10 minutes after 10. take a look. the bridge is completely empty. now except for a couple of cal trans vehicles, the clock is ticking. cal trans says it can finish this seismic retrofit by 5:00 a.m. on monday weather permitting. cal trans trucks loaded with replacement beams are standing by at the toll plaza ready to begin this seismic work. cal trans says it is work that may thought be affected by the expected rains. >> i hope not. we should be past a certain point late saturday or early sunday. we are starting to put things back together to open this by 5:00 on monday morning. >> this is the bridge section that will be replaced with a polliester deck structure. it will be more flexible during an earthquake. on the weekend about 4,000 cars cross this bridge each hour. and that means people working will have to find alternate routes. it works this foster city. >> i get there and it will take an hour or more. >> the -- they begin on saturday at the san mateo event center. she man success con success assistant and audience knows the weekend. here is an idea, with a map showing you those alternate routes, now highway 237 to the south of the dunbar ton bridge and the bay bridge is an alternate route you should use. back here live at the san mateo bridge, since the giants won and will be playing on sunday, if you are headed out to the park, make sure that you pick another alternate route. you are not going to be able to use the caught completely by surprise with two outs in the fourth. he was magnificent on the mound. 7 and two-thirds and struck out six in a 5-0 giants victory. they are still down 3 games to two in the series. they are coming back to san francisco for a game six on sunday. the former oakland a often criticized failed to live up to his big contract and saved the day for the giants. wayne freedman is there will be a game 7, it will take place here on monday at 5:07. >> we are counting on it. as baseball season nears an end, it looks like hockey will never begin. all games canceled through november the maritime director james quan has been put on paid administrative leave and ordered to return from a business trip to china. yesterday port executive director omar benjamin was also placed on leave. a central figure in the gang rape of a richmond schoolgirl three years ago is on his way to state prison. miguel ortega pled guiltyfour fn four felony counts including aggravated sexual assault with great bodily injury. the 16-year-old girl was raped and beaten in 2009 outside richmond high school after leavance. homecoming dance. under the plea deal, he was sentenced to 32 years in state prison. >> we weighed the need for justice this this case with the needs and the sensitivities to the victim in this case. what would she go through if she were having -- going to have to testify. >> he wishes he could undo that night. he never wanted what happened to happen. >> five other defendants are still headed to trial. well, a hercules woman walking her dog suffered moderate injuries after here tonight. because of scheduling issues tomorrow we will see the earliest big game ever. add two more sporting events that have never been seen in the bay area before, and you have one very busy weekend in october. as far as these cal students are concerned, the big game is already on. but the actual kickoff of the big game between cal and stanford doesn't start until noon on saturday in berkeley. it is just one of several sporting events around the bay area. while cal and stanford are going at it, it will be in full swing with skateboarders grinding up picnic benches for the crowd and those like sketchy andy lewis showing off their skills. >> the hardest maneuver is doing a front flip on your feet and back on a 360. other things like a chest bounce where you land on your chest look at that for us.>> carolyn >> carolyn and dan, part of your weekend will be impacted by rain, but not immediately. we do have a marine layer in place. it is 1600 feet deep. and with the low clouds and thave mis also have mist and drizzle. as you head into your saturday morning prepare for the possibility of slick roadways. sun and clouds tomorrow and the rain arrives on sunday night. snow is expected on monday. if you have travel plans keep that in mind. tomorrow it will be a sunny and mild day. we will see a few clouds around from time to time. but this front here will stay to the north of us for your saturday. you don't have to worry about needing the rain gear for any outdoor plans. by sunday things will start to change. a cold front starts to approach. rain begins sunday night. we are talking about 7:00, 8:00 in the evening. as the cold front slides south, it is looking like a messy monday morning commute. the heart of the storm will be moving through the commute time. behind the front still scattered showers for your monday night and heading into tuesday. and the snow is going to be coming down in the sierra nevada. rainfall estimates up until 5:00 p.m. monday look like this. north bay mountains up to an inch of rain. this will be the first significant rain of the season. we are looking of a a half an inch to an inch in the santa cruz mountains. in most other areas you will see less than half an inch for the east bay. the south bay quarter to half an inch. winter storm watch will be going up late sunday night into monday for the sierra nevada. a foot of snow possible and six inches possible above 6500, and of course this will likely impact the path of interstate 80 and u.s. 50. if you have travel plans, carry the chains. or just hold off on your travels. tomorrow morning, starting off with the clouds and maybe misty and drizzly. temperatures in the mid50s to the low 60s. and as we show you your afternoon readings, 73 in area. 74 for campbell. on the peninsula, 71 in san mateo and palo alto. the coastal areas are quite mild. downtown san francisco, 70 degrees. south san francisco 69. and in the north bay, it is going to be a mix of sun and clouds. mid70s santa rosa and san rafael, head out toward the east bay. a narrow range of temperatures. 72 in oakland, newark. the inland communities, it will be beautiful. 75 in livermore and danville. but certainly cooler than average for this time of year. had to's high temperatures dropped a good 5 to 20 degrees. tomorrow we will hold them before we drop more on sunday. around the monterey bay, 72 in santa cruz. we have the big game tomorrow. and check out the forecast. cal versus stanford at memorial stadium. mild and 3:00. 70 degreese and we fast-forward to sunday. can't leave these guys out. game six, the san francisco giants up against the cardinals, breezy. 4:32, 60 degrees and the rain will stay to the north until around 8:00 or so. there will be some rain in the forecast on sunday night and heading into monday if you are going to the giants game. grab the umbrella. monday will be messy. tuesday scattered showers. a slight chance of showers on wednesday, and another possibility
