this is abc7 news. >> today was the day that officer liu was laid to rest in new york city. it is all on our minds, but how heavy our hearts are we have a job to do so we are going to do it. >> san francisco police chief tonight on concerns about officer safety after police shoot and kill a man who was carrying what turned out to be an air soft gun. good evening. it happened around 5:30 tonight outside the mission police station at 17th and valencia. abc7 news reporter is live in san francisco with the details. sergio? >> katie, when police opened fire this evening a few of their stray bullets went into the brick wall here at the elbow room. no one inside was injured. when they did open fire, it was because the man was standing right there at the exit to the parking lot to the police station. this is the first officer involved shooting in san francisco just four days into the new year. >> this shooting happened feet from the mission police station front door. residents in the neighborhood were startled by the popping sound of the gunshot. >> three pops. it was pretty close to each other. that's why my fiancee thought it was fireworks. >> on police radio you can hear the initial calls by officers. . >> one down. >> we have the whole block blocked off. >> he says the man officers shot is caucasian and in his 30s. he was in the restricted area beside the station house and had been told to leave. then three officers driving out of the police lot in a patrol car saw him again and that's when the situation escalated. >> they exited the car and went to approach him to tell him you can't be here. he went to his waist band where there was the butt of a gun and drew. the suspect was hit three times. >> it turns out he had an air soft bb or pellet gun and didn't fire at the police. but the man had a peculiar conversation with other officers earlier in the day. >> approached other officers and inqired -- inquired as to what kind of weapons we carry. the officers at the time found curious, but nothing played out at that time. >> following tonight's shooting a radio call went out reminding officers to remain vigilant. it is clear all departments across the country are on alert. >> today was the day that officer liu was laid to rest in new york city. it is all on our minds. >> the man was rushed to san francisco general hospital. he died shortly after surgery. abc7 news. >> he says he will hold a town hall meeting to discuss tonight's shooting sometime in the next few days. >> new at 11:00, two people are dead after a crash in unincorporated alameda county. it happened around 6:15 about seven miles east of 680. two eastbound cars crashed and ended up in the opposite lane where they were both hit by an suv. two children and an adult have minor injuries. another adult has major injuries. the road was closed for nearly four hours. new video of a hit-and-run collision that left a man with several broken bones including his vertebrae. it happened in oakland on new year's day. it was in the crosswalk at fraught veil and east 18th street. you see the man you can whatting across the street when a car comes up quickly and hits him. we will not show you the actual impact, but the video goes on to show the man being thrown into the air and hitting a parked car and landing next to the curb. the driver barely slowed down before speeding off. >> the golden gate bridge will be closed to cars next weekend for the installation of a moveable median barrier. it is an inconvenience to some and a financial setback to others. abc7 news reporter lilian kim is live at the golden gate bridge toll plaza with more on the upcoming closure. lilian? >> these are the zipper trucks that will be moving the moveable median barrier once it is installed next weekend. the machines arrived this weekend. it is part of a $30 million effort to prevent head on collisions on the golden gate bridge. in a matter of days, the plastic pylons that separate the northbound and southbound lanes will be replaced with a concrete median. the zipper truck will move the barrier on an as needed basis depending on the flow of traffic. it will take a whole weekend to install it. it is composed of 3,000 concrete units each weighing 1500 pounds. >> the engineers figured out it would take weeks if we close the center lanes. the bridge board of directors decided they would rip off the bandaid and do it in one fell swoop. >> the closure is from 12:01 on saturday to 4 a.m. on monday. merchants in sausalito are bracing for a slow weekend. they say more than half of their customers are tourists who drive over the bridge. >> they do have the option to ferry, walk, bike. >> but henry nguyen is not counting on it. he is closing his shop during the closure. >> we cannot do anything. >> the golden gate district is well aware that the economic impact which is why they chose to close the ban during what is traditionally a slow weekend, and while they say it will be inconvenient for a um could of days, in the end -- for a couple of days, in the end it will be a better bridge. abc7 news. >> turning to weather, lilian looked awfully cold out there at the toll plaza. drew is here with a first check of weather on live doppler 7hd. >> it will be another chilly night across the region. temperatures are falling into the 30s and the low 40s but it is not as cold as it has been in the past couple nights. those freeze warnings are in affect. 38 in san jose and 39 in oakland and 38 the overnight low in napa. nationwide temperatures are in for a warming trend. watch as the cool airy treats to the north and east. warm air infiltrates california and by wednesday the record 68 degrees in downtown san francisco. we could be beating the record. we will talk more about the warm air headed our way with the accu-weather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> you may be warming up here, but bitter cold temperatures will be sweeping across the eastern united states. a dip in the jet stream will be bringing in arctic air from canada in places like minnesota. the lows are forecast to plunge between mns 15 and -- minus 15 and minus 30 overnight. in georgia a tornado swept through the rural town of alma. it knocked down trees and destroyed two barns and a mobile home and two people were injured. new details, disas every relief for bay area residents and businesses uh eke dash -- affected by last week's storm. it makes loans available in san mateo alameda, san francisco, santa clara and santa cruz counties. they are eligible and you must apply by the march 3rd deadline. vallejo police are searching for this man. he is known to live in contra costa and solano county and it is considered to be armed and dangerous. police arrived at the motel 6 around 7:30 last night responding to a call that two men were fighting and one had gone to get a gun. hawthorne jumped off a two-story walkway nearly landing on an officer who tried to detain him but ended up pursuing him. hawthorne stole a car and tried to run over the officer and crashed through a locked gate. the officer shot at the car which was later found abandoned on sacramento avenue. there is a muddy mess left behind from a watermain break in san bruno. water gushed out near georgia and huntington avenue just after midnight. the water was almost as deep as the cars parked on the street. the main that was broke lead to the stairway of a home. crews spent the day making repairs and that home was the only one to lose water. construction begins again tomorrow on the central subway in union square. that means the two-block temporary plaza will be replaced with construction equipment. the green astro turf and the holiday gear went up during a break in construction. still to come on abc news at 11:00 honoring two decades of sportscasting from the iconic stuart scott. what he hept to -- what he meant to fans and athletes. and more problems for passengers on a nightmare flight stuck on the tarmac for 12 hours and it doesn't end there. the new problems they are facing. and the historic swearing in ceremony set to take place and the other biggy vent happening at the same the sports world is mourning the death of long-time espn anchor stuart scott. he died today at the age of 49 after a long battle with cancer. "good morning america" anchor robin roberts with the man who could call it like no one else. >> he is on a roll. >> derek jeter in first. >> more than being in the right place at the right time, he was a in you voice for a new time. >> boo-ya. that's it. that's what he brought to sports center. >> from his language to his look and his personality to his passion, stuart connected with the audience and broadened it at the same time, creating his own place in pop culture. >> welcome to sports center. i'm stuart scott booya. >> watching him as a black man and hearing things that i talk about with my other friends and feeling like okay i'm part of the conversation now. >> he sat down with two presidents, barack obama and bill clinton and he conducted one on one interviews with some of the biggest names in sports including tiger woods and michael jordan. stuart's path through work and life changed in 2007. doctors discovered a tumor. he under went two surgeries and months of chemotherapy. he believed he had beatenned it. four years late -- he had beaten it. four years later in 2011 cancer returned. stuart faced it again and again it returned in january of 2013. >> when you say you think it is something that you will never kick you don't want to know the prognosis, it doesn't matter to you? alert in a row. a spare the air alert means you can't burn wood manufactured logs or any other solid fuel. air quality is expected to improve midweek. as abc7 morning news anchor tells us they are focusing on one of the most common sources. >> if you have been stuck behind a smoking tail pipe you know where most of the air pollution comes from. tracking where it is going? that's his passion. >> this is a clegs of commercial -- a collection of commercial productions. >> professor cohen and his team are refining sensors known as carbon dioxide. >> i am swapping out the old generation board. >> over to shu and more on the very touching tributes coming out for stuart scott. >> he was one of the good stuart scott passed away this morning after a seven-year battle with cancer. a little college espn app. finally stuart scott passed away this morning after a seven-year battle with cancer at 49 years old. he was like no other at espn when he arrived and stayed true to himself throughout. here is reaction from the people closest to stuart. >> 49 fighting cancer three times not very fair. i'm sure he would want us to remember him for his passion and dignity, so we will and we love you. >> we choose not to say that stuart lost to cancer at the age of 49. instead we will simply say we all lost stuart. >> as an athlete, you don't like to think this. >> you do have favorites. and because he was always so fair the number one thing for me as a person who wanted to be a broadcaster. >> i will remember him for the true professional he was. the good, kind person he was the dad he was. he took more pride in that than anything little. it is tremendous loss. it jumped in my mind. >> the fact he has passed away is absolutely mind boggling and a travis stey. he battled cancer as bravely as anybody else. i know there are many people out there who are battling cancer right now and would want -- stuart would want you to keep fighting. keep fighting. he didn't lose this battle with cancer. he fought it as bravely as he possibly could, and as you go to bed tonight, flip your pillow over to the cool side and before you go to sleep as stuart would say, you pray to the big man for his beautiful daughters who he loved taelor and sidney pray for stuart and his family, his parents his siblings, his girlfriend, his ex-wife everybody who he loved and that includes you the sports fans. >> he was a pioneer and an inspiration to a lot of people of color who had never seen anybody like him on espn. he will be missed. unfortunately he went way too young. this abc7 sports report is
