>> we hired three extra, some keep an eye on things. all of our managers are on staff just to make sure everything is going smoothly. kim: des moines police are also adding officers to the downtown district during peak hours, around 2:00 a.m. a deadly shooting last month in that area sparked new security concerns over a lack of city-funded surveillance cameras. >> it doesn't affect me. it doesn't make me think twice. it's life. it happens. kim: partiers i talked to say, they feel safe with the current police presence. >> i think it's definitely a concern to look at. but you know it's new years eve. , you can never be too safe so you know you just gotta watch , out and just look out for is a safe place. kim: downtown community alliance says its been brainstorming new ideas to improve downtown , cameras. reporting from downtown des moines, kim st. onge, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. shaina: the number of homicides in des moines in 2015 was as decades. alyx: kcci's mark tauscheck spoke with police about why the number spiked this year. mark: in april, a bar fight in the parking lot outside gerri's bar and grill in des moines left andrew purcell unconscious and bleeding after being punched in the face, falling and hitting his head on the asphalt. he later died. police charged 29-year-old daniel patton with voluntary manslaughter. according to des moines police out of the 21 homicides in des moines this year purcell's death was the only homicide where the killer and the victim did not know each other. >> we find the one commonality in all these is there seems to be an exisiting personal relationship between the people involved prior to the incident that results in a murder. mark: police numbers show the 21 homicides this year are the first time over 20 since 1995 . police said the furthest back they have accurate statistics for is 1978 when there were 27. des moines police use fbi standards that record homicides, the intentional death of a . so the two officer-involved shootings are included in the 21 but instances of vehicular homicides like the drunk driver who struck and killed wade franck on grand avenue in august are not included. >> we do not have any kind of a homicide crime spree going on. it's just these personal relationships that got so volatile that at one point in time they resulted in a homicide . none of them are random, just picking one person randomly getting killed. shaina: des moines police tell -- alyx: des moines police tell kcci all 21 homicide cases have been closed, except for the last one that happened over the weekend. a player well known to iowa cyclone fans is facing serious charges. tcu quarterback trevone boykin is accused of assaulting a police officer. san antonio police say boykin was fighting with employees at a bar. when officers responded, police say he tried to punch an officer. from this season from this photo, talking to cyclone kid captain abby faber when tcu came to ames back in october. shaina: a massive breach of voter information. security researchers have discovered a massive data file containing personal information on 191 million voters left unsecured online. the information includes voters' names, addresses, political affiliations and voting history since the year 2000. this affects nearly everyone registered to vote in the united states. >> yes you are at risk in terms , of disclosing information. i don't think proper security protocols are in place and i think really everybody has a role in it. shaina: it is still not clear who built the database, but typically voter information must be obtained from each state. "the new york times" reports that as of wednesday night, the database was no longer accessible online. alyx: in commitment 2016 this morning, two top aides have stepped down from ben carson's campaign manager barry bennett and communications director doug watts stepped down this morning. bennett says he left because of mounting frustration that carson was listening more to his longtime business manager, armstrong williams, and not the advice of his paid campaign staff. feeling the bern, in the new year. shaina: hundreds of bernie sanders supporters started the party early yesterday with the man himself. kcci's vanessa peng has the story from the renaissance des moines savery hotel. >> happy new year. vanessa: hundreds of people rang in the new year with bernie sanders. >> i love seeing him on new years eve. there's nowhere else i would rather be. vanessa: the democratic presidential hopeful talked about his goals for the new year especially with the iowa , caucuses just about a month away. >> starting right here in iowa and a week later going to new , hampshire and then to nevada and then to south carolina we have an opportunity together to say that the united states government has got to represent of billionaires. vanessa: iowans we spoke to say as they reflect on the new year they are feeling the bern. ,>> i think it is pretty intense. it's pretty exciting that he's here in iowa. he showed up in des moines for new year's. i mean, people are jealous. >> it shows that our country is renewing this year and it shows that we can all come together and support him tonight. >> it's going to be a new beginning in and we know it if 2016 everybody pulls together votes, you're in. >> it's really like a nice kick off to the new year and really like a way to prove moines, we do have some clouds but no snow is falling. if you are anywhere from zero to 10 degrees across the state for wind chills. plenty of sunshine will mean plenty of road spray, and tomorrow more road melting with highs in the 30's. alyx: still ahead on kcci, countdown to kick-off is on. today is the big day for the iowa hawkeyes. how iowans are preparing for all of the day's events in pasadena. shaina: plus the uss iowa was , the home of the hawkeyes on new year's eve. we went on board the historic battleship with thousands of today's big game.ge, it takes three hundred americans working for a solid year, to make as much money as one top ceo. it's called the wage gap. and the republicans will make it worse by lowering taxes for those at the top and letting corporations write it is a cold start to the new year. wind chills anywhere from zero to 10 degrees. it feels like five now in audubon and the wind chill in knoxville is 12 degrees, but the temperatures will be warming up nicely today. clouds will be giving way to sunshine and a great afternoon, to 32 degrees, and more nice weather is on tap for the weekend. in california, they are expecting high temperatures in pasadena in the mid-60's. shaina: that sounds nice. we're just hours away from a hawkeye rose bowl. and we're counting down to kick off this morning on kcci. our coverage starts with steve karlin who got an up close look , at some of the iowans helping make the historic rose parade happen. steve: flowers are what power the rose palace in pasadena, california. it is one of the few places where the 44 floats you will see are painstakingly put together. >> when you look at it on television, you see ago by any think, that is beautiful, that you have no idea what went into that float. steve: len and allie do. >> a carnation and tiny petals steve: they are part of a west central iowa lutheran group who project every year for the past 13 years. >> everybody pays their own way. steve: they are called the pedal pushers, and their primary goal world float. but over the four days here, the 18 iowans will lend a hand wherever they can. >> this float on the road is the city of los angeles, and a lot of our people have put a lot of time in that one as well. >> my joy is seeing other people enjoy it for the first time. steve: the work is not too tedious that a timid tv reporter will not give it a try. as you are watching this and see pay special attention to this float. work of art. shaina: in the days after the parade the iowa petal pushers go , down to la's skid row where they hand out personal hygiene products to the homeless and serve them a meal. alyx: the iowa hawkeyes came face-to-face with their namesake in los angeles thursday. kcci's eric hanson takes us on board the uss iowa, with thousands of hawk fans. eric fly an iowa flag anywhere : this week in l.a. and you'll draw a crowd. but park a ship here named iowa and you'll overwhelm the decks with more black and gold than any ship at sea has ever seen. >> we were the first people in, now there's no way people can get in because the line is huge. eric marv hiddleson's been to 4 : hawkeye rose bowls, including the 1957 win as a student. but this? swarms of bumblebee colors this huge make him feel like he's 20 >> it just makes you feel good all over. it's so great in your heart. it's great to be a hawkeye and i bleed black and gold. eric holiday weekends often draw : a thousand on board. >> but to have this kind of turnout today is just beyond words. i mean this is double if not , triple any crowd size we've >> i don't know how the economy will survive with nobody at home. alyx: we are doing our best. there were about 21,000 on board the uss iowa thursday. a good day for them is normally the people who highs close to or above freezing. it is going to be a little bit road spray. it is 23 in ames and 16 degrees in audubon. factoring in the wind, we have wind chills close to zero in some neighborhoods. it feels like seven in ottumwa so dress warmly. we still have a few clouds across central iowa. no snow with these clouds, and they are heading out. sunshine on the way this afternoon. the weather is nice and quiet. any snow showers will be staying highs will be close to freezing and warmer to the southwest. over the weekend, temperatures continue to moderate, and even some 40's returned to the map from kansas to rapid city. right now in des moines, it is 24. the clouds are in place but they are moving out. the wind chill is that 10 degrees. the wind kind of takes your breath away. the freeway is nice and clear this morning. some of the side streets might be slippery. anything that tried to melt yesterday will be refrozen. plenty of sunshine, and the wind from the west will be a factor. highs on saturday in the low to mid 30's. sunday looks pretty good as well. and quite a few clouds, but the weather stays quiet until the end of the week around thursday or friday. a chance of rain or snow, as temperatures will be climbing back into the mid-and maybe upper 30's. the trend is actually pretty good. shaina: 30's do not seem too bad. news around the world now, a luxury hotel caught on fire, lighting up downtown dubai's skyline just ahead of its elaborate new year's eve celebration and fireworks display. alyx: chris martinez has the new information for us. chris: massive flames engulfed the address hotel, a luxury highrise in downtown dubai in the united arab emirates. people inside said it was chaos. >> the heat was so intense outside, it was unbelievable. and just people started to panic, crushing each other trying to go downstairs and jumping over railings. i couldn't believe how fast it actually happened. chris: the 63-story hotel and condominium is located near the world's tallest skyscraper, the burj khalifa, where tens of thousands gathered for a new >> i used to live on the 32nd floor. and i've spent new year's eve at the address. it's really the place to be. chris: the fire broke out two hours before midnight. officials rushed to evacuate the skyscraper as flames ripped through the building, consuming at least 20 floors in a matter of minutes. but some residents say the alarm didn't sound right away. >> it was slightly worrying that the alarm went off essentially when the building was properly on fire. chris: burning debris fell from the building as firefighters raced to contain the blaze. crowds could heard several explosions. >> i just heard a big bang. hang on. was it the fireworks? chris: officials say the hotel's sprinklers and internal fire-fighting systems helped to prevent the spread of the flames. despite the fire, dubai went ahead with its new year's eve celebration at midnight. chris martinez, cbs news. african-american men sparked outrage across the country. in north charleston, south carolina, walter scott was shot in the back. in baltimore, freddie gray died of spinal injuries in a police van after being taken into police custody and in chicago, newly released video of laquan mcdonald's 2014 death touched off community protests, and charges of murder against police officers. racial incidents sparked protests on several college campuses including the where the president resigned after the football team refused to play. boston marathon bomber dzhokar tsarnaev and aurora, colorado
