so, we had newt gingrich and mitt romney. both on the offensive over the last 24 hours. they know that six days is a short time and that's when the caucuses are. what have we been hearing from both of the candidates, mark? >> well, hala, you're absolutely right. so much on the line, so much at stake here. six days until january 3rd when iowa republicans will caucus and will really kick off what has been already a very long presidential season. well, newt gingrich had pledged not to go negative in this campaign. he had said that he would only go positive and talk about his plan to try to turn the american economy around. well, the gloves have come off and, in fact, he is going negative. yesterday on "the situation room" with wolf blitzer, he went right after mitt romney. in fact, let's listen to what newt gingrich had to say. >> all i say mitt is, if you want to run a negative campaign and you want to attack people, at least be man enough to own it. that's your staff and that's your organization. those are your millionaire friends paying for it and let's be clear. i am willing to fight for real job creation with a real reagan camp-style job creation program. you are a moderate massachusetts republican who, in fact, is very timid about job creation. let's get it on together and let's compare our two plans. >> you know, hala, it wasn't just mitt romney that newt gingrich was critical of. he was critical of ron paul. in fact, wolf asked him directly, would you support ron paul, if you won the republican presidential nomination and newt gingrich flatly said no. to be fair to newt gingrich, he is taking criticism from all sides right now. he's getting had hit by ron paul and he's getting hit by these independent expenditure groups, these so-called super pacs supporting mitt romney for the nomination and newt gingrich trying to fight back, although he still says he's staying positive. hala? >> he's taking it from all sides, right, mark? is this hurting them and is going negative also hurting them if he vowed not to go negative? >> well, it's a saying here in iowa that iowa voters do not like to see negative ads, but, in fact, negative ads do work. what we're seeing is these independent groups are the ones that are really doing a lot of the damage to newt gingrich. that's what it appears to be in recent polling that newt gingrich came out of no where. we thought his campaign was all done and he came out of no where in the beginning of december when herman cain fell and he left the race and that was the rise of newt gingrich. however, these negative ads do seem to be working, hala. >> all right, let's talk about gingrich. the virginia ballot. he's not the only one not to have made that virginia ballot. what is going to happen there with all these candidates who haven't made, who haven't gotten their name on the virginia ballot in time? >> yeah. let's just continue on the whole theme of being negative. we saw mitt romney being critical of newt gingrich for failing to collecting the 10,000 signatures that you need to get on the virginia ballot. this is a big blow to newt gingrich, as it was to rick santorum and as it was, as well, to rick perry. none of those three are going to be on the virginia ballot. mitt romney will be on the ballot, as will ron paul. well, mitt romney had some words about why newt gingrich wasn't on the ballot. let's hear what he had to say yesterday. >> i think you compare that to, what is it, pearl harbor. i think it's more like lucille ball at the chocolate factory. so, i mean, you got to get it organized. >> so, a dig by mitt romney at newt gingrich because newt gingrich does not have the organization that mitt romney has in place. hala, just in a few hours, our own wolf blitzer will be sitting down with mitt romney and talking about his run here in iowa and his run for the republican presidential nomination. hala? >> well, there we heard from mitt romney and we heard from newt gingrich and, as you mentioned there, mitt romney will sit down with wolf blitzer and you can see that interview at 4:00 p.m. eastern right here on cnn. mark preston, we'll catch up with you later. mark is part of our team in des moines, iowa. now, this week, president obama plans to ask congress to raise the debt limit by $1.2 trillion to fund the government through most of next year. now, it's part of that deal struck over the summer, so approval is expected. but the increase is likely to give republican candidates some of those fresh talking points on the campaign trail. and we'll see how many of those make it into the discourse in iowa over the next day or two. let's turn our attention now internationally to north korea and the carefully choreographed north koreaen-style staged events. the pageantry of a public funeral today for kim jong-il. a three-hour event dominating state-run television and featuring a tearful kim jong-un. now, there he is. he is the youngest son who is now known as the great successor. cnn's paula hancocks is in seoul, south korea, with more. all right, so, i imagine south koreans and really much of the region had a bit of worry when kim jong-il died thinking what is going to happen in terms of the succession. are those worries still out there or do they feel that the succession to kim jong-un is going smoothly, paula? >> well, hala, i think the concerns are still, but what we saw today in his funeral in this pomp and ceremony that north koreans do best is that at least north korea was trying to get the impression that everything is running smoothly. what we saw was kim jong-un walking alongside his father's hearse. we had his uncle behind him who we understand is going to be helping him in the first few years of his reign. the military on the other side of the hearse, which was meant to show that he has the backing of the military. all very choreographed by the north koreans. they wanted to show that this succession is going to script, as far as they're concerned. of course, this is just the public face. we have no idea what is really happening behind the scenes. we don't know if there are political battles and power struggles amongst the elite. and we don't know in the future if kim jong-un wants his work to get his power base will actually feel like he needs to carry out an attack or a provocative act in some way to try and show his strength or whether or not he will actually negotiate even more than his father did. so, i think these concerns around the region and around the world are still definitely there. but what we saw today, hala is really what we were expecting. the pomp, the ceremony, the tens of thousands of north koreans out on the streets braving the cold in a very snowy pyongyang watching the funeral procession. >> of course, the questions still out there regarding the nuclear talks, the development of nuclear power in north korea. thanks very much, paula hancocks is in seoul and south korea. the world is keeping a close eye on what's next for north korea. zain verjee is live in london with a look at what the headlines are saying about kim jong-il's country and the state of the country he is leaving behind. hi, there, zain. >> hi, hala. straight to the newspaper headlines and give you a flavor of what the analysis is. take a look at the "the daily telegraph." a typical north korean state funeral. it's an opinion piece that says the north korean regime displayed hundreds of thousands of mourners in a similar state of overwhelmed grief during the funeral of his father, whose coffin was also draped in a red flag. the other newspaper here "the guardian" and "the uk." thousands mourn north korean leader. may have helped answer key questions about the communist regime's immediate futamid fears that the rapid rise of the inexperienced kim jong-un could spark power struggle. will kim grow out from his father's shadow, it asks. an analysis piece that says, while having to grow out of the shadow of his father, the untested heir is now saddled with daunting undertakings such as shoring up the economy and ensuring firm support from his people and establishing a charismatic leadership. analysts we spoke to today, hala, said the important message people in north korea is one of continuity that kim jong-un will follow the policies that his father had and maintain the same kind of backing from his uncle, the region, the head of the military, all that trotted out behind him when they were going through the funeral procession. >> we'll know soon enough how smooth the transition is. as far as many countries are, we'll know what happens with these six-party nuclear talks. whether or not they get back on track and what happens on that level. zain, thanks very much. i'll see you a bit later. claiming syrian authorities have moved hundreds of detainees to secret military sites to hide them from outside observers. arab league monitors in the country now. they're there for a second day to see if the government is ending its bloody crackdown. this video allegedly shows syrian forces spraying water canyons at protesters on tuesday. protests and violence have erupted ahead of the arab league visit. mohammed jamjoom is following developments. the monitors are saying they aren't seeing anything frightening in the streets of homs or other parts of syria. of course, this is raising some eyebrows saying there are only ten of you in each hot spot and you are being acompacompanied be syrian government. >> that's right, hala. we were told observers would fan out to other citiy ies and we hd that in hama there were protests and clashes earlier in the day. now, we're being told, in fact, those visits were postponed for logistical reasons and causing more concerns among the activists and many of them are really convinced that what the syrian government is showing these observers is just a charade. it's not the real picture of what's going on there in syria right now. we heard yesterday that while observers were in the city activists and residents said crackdowns were still going on and thousands of protesters that were in places in the neighborhood there being fired upon with live ammunition and tear gas trying to disperse the crowd. when we spoke to arab league monitors earlier today and asked them, they said, you know, reports being written up and being delivered to the arab league. they knew these reports were confidential and they weren't talking about what they had seen or hadn't seen on the ground in syria. hala? >> the reports that detainees are being hidden from the observers and also we're hearing reports that residents in homs refuse to meet with some of these observers because they had the military with them. of course, they're afraid for their own safety if they go up to observers and they have members of the military and officers there standing by and listening in on conversations. >> well, that's right. first to your point about are they afraid to go up to the observers. the arab league monitors we spoke with yesterday said anybody could come up to them and talk to them. the arab league monitors continue to insist that they had the free access that they needed. but the activists that we spoke with, they were concerned about this. we did see videos emerging posted online by activist groups purporting to show members of this arab league delegation in the streets and showing residents coming up to them and one video, in particular, residents pleading to take these members to more embattled parts of the cities to see what was really going on. a big question mark to what they will be able to see. the activists still very concerned that they're not getting a full and accurate picture of what is going on. >> what we would love. we would love to go to syria and report on it for ourselves, but so far we haven't been given permission since that brief visit last july. thanks verymuch. mohammed jamooom in cairo, egypt. an important american ally in the region. it ends with him on a gurney in court. up next, we're talking about what's changed and what has stayed very much >> well, it certainly seems from those images and from everything that has been going on over the course of the last several months but in the last few weeks as much as things have changed in egypt, they certainly have not. young activists are continuing to stay in tahrir square and the streets as a permanent revolution against military rule, which they suspect for trying to salvage as much as they can of the mubarak regime. i think that there is a lot of evidence that that is, in fact, what the military strategy has been. >> when u.s. viewers watch these images and they think, wait a minute, in february we had this revolution and mubarak stepped down and democracy was supposed to flourish in that country and we did have a few rounds of legislative elections in egypt where the muslim brotherhood scored very well. so, what is the future then for that country after having gone through such a difficult and historic year? >> well, for anyone who is paying attention to what's going on in egypt, the idea that egypt would relatively smoothly transition from 60 years to a democracy was not necessarily dealing with the facts of the situation. i think that egypt is in for a long-term struggle for, as egyptians debate what kind of society that they want. and you can see that the military has a very different vision of the future of egypt, as the activists in tahrir square, which is very different from the muslim brotherhood, which you just mentioned, has done quite well in the most recent round of elections. so, this is going to be a long-term process in which egyptians work out their future and it's going to be marked by periodic spasms of violence and continuing protest and instability and uncertainty. >> when you look at the parties that do well when there are free elections. for instance, in tunisia, the country who sparked this whole arab spring movement. you have the relevant islamic parties that score well. is that what a democratic arab world will look like when elections are held? >> well, we're not sure. in the early going it seems that these islamist groups which are well organized and well resourced and have been so for quite some time certainly have an upper hand over new political parties that have emerged as a result of these uprisings. what will really be the tell tale sign of egypt's move towards a more political system is how egyptians go about writing the constitution and the content of that constitution. now, this is not going to be an easy process, by any stretch of the imagination. but the real focus now is going to be on the content of this constitution and that will, the development of egyptian institutions after the fall of mubarak will tell us what kind of society egypt will be. >> not just egypt, though, steven, as you know. what happens in the most populous arab country has an influence on the rest of the arab world. so, it's going to be so important what happened in 2012. we always appreciate your analysis. steven cook, thanks for joining us. >> thank you, hala. the u.s. is still considering a request from, speaking of the arab world, al sal saleh to come for treatment in new york. earlier in the day a senior obama administration official said this man you see there would be, in fact, let in. it state department is still trying to determine if he is eligible. he was badly injured in an attack on his palace in june. well, we've got another best of 2011 list ahead for you. we'll tell you which companies were the best performers on wall street this year and ones were the worst. and a russian fishing boat trapped for nearly two weeks in antarctic ice. it's finally free. hear who came to the rescue after this. it's me? "anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations." any disruption will not be tolerated. the u.s. navy maintains, as you know, hala, a number of warships in that region at all times and they're making it very clear that they will not tolerate iran shutting down that strait, which is international waters and a vital economic lifeline, hala. >> the strait of hormuz, once again, you'll see one big country there and that is saudi arabia. >> saudi arabia. >> saudi arabia. >> this is all about oil prices and the freedom of navigation of oil and other goods through this strait. oil over $100 a barrel. right now, of course, crude oil. the saudis are thought to be maybe to be unable to talk to the iranians. when we were out in the region with the chairman of the joint chiefs we made a stop with him, of course, in saudi arabia. he was making it very clear that he hoped that the saudis would be able to talk to the iranians and talk to them about their nuclear program and talk to them about their rhetoric and calm things down a bit. general martin dempsey, the chairman of the joint chiefs. the saudis now will be the linchpin if the saudis would make a move, would the saudis raise their oil production levels to try and bring the market backinto balance? this is, as much economic warfare as it is anything else. but the u.s. navy, the obama administration letting the u.s. navy this morning take the lead in talking about this that a disruption will not be tolerated and that the u.s. will not allow the strait to be shut down and very clearly the allies in that region, the persian gulf oil producing nations and the other smaller gulf nations in the region are making it clear, they don't want that to happen either. goods and services flow through those oil waterways and people want to see that commerce continue. hala? >> well, these gulf nations, saudi, they see iran as one of the biggest threats to them and economically, as well, with this saber rattling now. so, barbara, we'll get back to you with more on this story as more reaction comes out. we saw a lot of technical advances in 2011. you know about ipads, the new iphone, but what were some of the other things that changed our lives? a look at the year in tech, next. event dominated state run television. it featured a tearful kim jong un, the youngest son now known as the great successor. cnn's paula hancocks reports from seoul, south korea. >> reporter: walking alongside his father's coffin, the message could not be more clear. kim jong un, the supreme leader, leading the funeral procession for his father, kim jong il, the dear leader. key military and political leaders surround him showing publicly at least kim jong il's wish for a smooth succession has been granted. the coffin proceeded by a giant portrait of a smiling kim jong il was then driven through the snow laidend streets of pyongyang. tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of mourners lined the streets. soldiers bowed their heads, their caps in hand. men and women wailed and beat their chests as the coffin passed them by. at one point rushing forward to get closer to the procession. a well choreographed event filled with pomp and ceremony, adverse weather only adding to the occasion. kcna news agency saying it reminds the north korean people of a snowy day the leader was born. a thunder rouse military is a louse to send off the leader who rules his people with an iron fist for 17 years. a man who developed a regime based on a cult of personality and terror. as kim jong un watched the final military parades of the day, the question being asked around the world is how closely will he follow in his father's footsteps. paula hancocks, cnn, seoul. let's tri to answer that question and others that now hang over the seek yes at the time nuclear power. a former advisor to the national security council. how closely, victor, will kim jong un follow in his father's footsteps, kim jong il, do you think? >> i think fairly closely in terms of the ideology. what we've heard thus far is he's going to follow something called sung gun politics, military first politics. that was the case under kim jong il and it looks to be the case under kim jong un as well. >> let's look at these images once again of this funeral carefully choreographed and staged with public mourning. hundreds of thousands of north koreans out mourning their dear leader. when you study these images of the funeral, what do you think? >> well, like your package said, i think is very well choreographed. they have done this once before in the sense in july of 1994 the first leader of north korea suddenly died so i think it's even the same cars that they're using as the ones they used in 1994. so, you know, this is a society in which pictures and images that are well choreographed as a form of nationalism is very well practice it's not a surprise to me that they've carried this off very well. the real question is whether they'll be able to carry off the politics of the transition in the future. >> well, we didn't see the two elder brothers, for instance, when you look at the images, at least in what state tv ran. we didn't see the two elder brothers of kim jong un kil. what does that tell us. >> this youngest son, the one that was walking alongside the hers, is the key guy. he's the one that's going to be leading the country. the absence of these two is really interesting. a lot of palace politics here. in an asian system it's usually the eldest son who inherits the business. it's clearly not the case this time. we'll have to watch and see whether factions will develop within the country, whether there will be divides between the party and military. they will try very hard to hold everything together. >> it all boiled down to victor, the nuclear ambitions and the nuclear development program of that country. that's what the u.s. is worried about. it's a nuclear power, and it's secretive, and we don't know how it's going to go and how the succession will go and who will be in charge. >> that's exactly right. i mean, for 25 years our main concern with regard to north korea was denuclear rising them. i was involved in negotiations, as well as others, to try to do that. the additional problem we have now is if this leadership transition does not go well and there's a leadership vacuum, we have a whole different problem now, which is who has control of the nuclear weapons. that could be an even more daunting problem than trying to denuclearize them. >> right. if north korea weren't a nuclear power, i doubt it would be in the headlines as often as it is. thanks very much. monitors from the arab league are in syria for a second day as the government followed through on promises to stop its crackdown on its own citizens. we'll find out in a live report. the mayor of stamford, connecticut says this fire represented a terrible, terrible day for his city. when you hear what happened and how it happened, including the 911 calls, you'll know why. we'll be right back. >> human rights group is claiming syrian authorities have moved hundreds of detainees to secret military sights to hide them from outside observers. arab league monitors are in syria for a second day to see if the government is ending its bloody crackdown. look at these images. water cannons at protesters in whhomwhom whom a. we can't confirm it. they've done it ahead and during the arab league visits. mohammed jamjoom is following this. let's talk about the arab league monitors. they've been to homs. this has been the flash point of the antias sad movement in syria. we've heard from them saying they haven't seen anything, quote, frightening. >> reporter: that's right, hala. this was quoted by reuters news agency earlier today. they spoke to the general. he heads up this observers mission that is in homs right now. he was quoted as saying that he hadn't seen anything frightening and that what he had seen, the situation was reassuring. now we asked members of the arab league, we spoke to a member of the advanced team that was there last week, about this and we were told that he doubted that the general made these remarks because the team members there are down to confidentiality agreements and also that daily situation reports are written as to what the monitors are seeing there. this is really only -- these quotes are really only causing more concerns for activists in syria. they're already concerned by the fact that they believe that these monitors aren't really being given free access that they need to be given. they believe that the syrian government is only taking them to the places they will allow them to see. now with these quotes it's just really increasing the concerns about the level of credibility of these monitors. many people in syria, many activists and human rights groups in syria have been calling into question the credibility of the arab league, of these monitors in particular and also saying that you're only going to have about ten monitors to each flash point city that they visit. how effective is this kind of small group going to be in trying to deal with such a huge problem and such a growing and increasing crackdown. >> well, as you know, the arab league has never been viewed as anything more than a toothless, in some cases pointless organization protecting its own members and the head of this arab league delegation in syria is himself a sudanese general who worked in the administration of omar ba shir, the president of sudan. he has a warrant out for his arrest by the international criminal court. people are saying who is he to tell anyone whether crimes are being committed. >> reporter: that's right. this has been a growing chorus that we're hearing from opposition activist groups inside syria and outside syria. they especially have been leveling criticism at the choice to head this delegation. the general, somebody who is a sudanese military man, they've been saying that somebody who is in the military in sudan because of the situation in dar for has no bisque on a team that is supposed to go in and investigate whether war crimes have been going on in syria as the allegations have been coming out from these groups in syria. again, it's just one more thing that's calling into question how credible these people are. now these teams are also made up of medics, they're also made up of legal and military experts. most of the people we speak with in syria really doubt the credibility and effectiveness of these teams and this growing chorus of condemnation is continuing. >> thanks. turning to politics, next ron paul taking jabs from every direction. will it sway his die hard supporters? our political buzz panel weighs in. a they had a lot to celebrate in 2011. new york, for instance, legal lieszed same-sex marriage, but the couples are in for a rude awakening come tax time, right? explain that. >> you're right about that. hala, that's because the federal government still doesn't recognize same-sex marriage so let's say couples in new york, for example, or massachusetts, iowa, they can get the benefits of filing jointly on their state tax returns, but they have to file federal taxes as individuals, and when they do that, they're going to owe uncle sam more money than a straight couple. cnn money actually had h and r block crunch the numbers. let's say a typical couple filing separately with the primary income earner filing as head of household owes $15199 in federal taxes. that's $4900 more than a straight couple. same sex couples, they also face other disadvantages when they file tax returns this way, so for one a head of household can end up in a higher tax bracket and be entitled to lower standard deductions. when it comes to kids, the child tax credit phases out sooner for individual filers. finally, if you're a same sex couple you're saddled with extra paperwork. they still have to show the state what their federal taxes would look like if they could file jointly. sure, it's great news if you're in the tax prep industry. not so good for same-sex couples who have to jump through >> let's say he were. could you vote for him? >> no. >> will ron paul supporters be swayed by these shots from the gop field? let's start with you, maria. >> no, i don't think they will, hala, especially his hard-core supporters who are some of the most passionate, loyal supporters there are in politics today. what i think will happen with them is that these kinds of attacks will actually make them dig in because they feel that it's either a conspiracy by their rivals or by the media to knock ron paul off now especially that he's one of the front-runners. i do think if he wins iowa, coming out of there he will have to aggressively explain himself on the newsletter stuff if he's going to be a viable candidate. >> chris? >> no. ron paul has ardent supporters. they'll continue to support him, but there's a two-prong strategy here from the front-runner standpoint. number one, there's such an anti-government sentiment right now, what's happening is that the other front-runners, romney and gingrich, are trying to really tam p down support for paul. the second as spent of it is the best thing actually that can happen for the front-runners is that ron paul wins iowa because if he wins eye owe warnings then everyone throws their hands up in the air and says, see, i told you. iowa doesn't matter. >> okay. pete? >> first of all, rick santorum is right again. president obama -- ron paul is to the left of president obama on foreign policy, as are a lot of americans. president obama is in many waste continuing george bush's foreign policy. will ron paul supporters be swayed? no. they won't be swayed by the facts on anything. it's interesting, no matter where you are on a political spectrum, you agree with something ron paul has professed. newt gingrich shouldn't talk about anybody's past. he can make a million dollars selling what he has in his own closet. >> mitt romney picks up an endorsement from the "boston herald." the paper says he's a standout in a republican clown car field. six days to iowa. make your best bet. who is the next candidate to drop out of this crowded race? let's start with chris. >> well, first of all, i think it's interesting that romney gets an endorsement from "boston herald" when he's running in iowa, very interesting. i think in terms of dropping out, if anyone is going to drop out, i think it probably is going to be santorum, however, i don't think that anyone's going to drop out at this point. i think for somebody like perry, for example, he's not going to drop out because he's got money. the problem for santorum is iowa is possibly the only state he can win. he certainly can't win new hampshire. >> maria? >> first of all, can we talk about this endorsement? what kind of endorsement is that? i would not be tauting this endorsement if i were mitt romney. it's like saying this is the least clownish of this group. in terms of who leaves iowa, i think if anybody finishes under jon huntsman, they should pack up their bags and leave. if michele bachmann finishes last of the conservatives, she should pack up and leave, too, because the person who won the iowa straw poll back in august, if she now comes last of the conservatives, it's time for her to go. >> pete. frankly, i think least clownish is kind of a compliment. who do you think is going to drop out. >> that's what's so sad. i'll take it as a compliment. >> i've been called least clownish myself. it doesn't hurt that much. the clown car image is hilarious. have this idea of herman cain driving it into a ditch and then donald trump jumping in and out of it, sarah palin circling the clown car trying to see if there's a window open. who will drop out after iowa? i'm sorry not to be risky. i think it's going to be rick santorum. he'll leave professional politics and join some organization with the word family in it so he can control women's bodies and make sure gay people don't have quality in erica manipulating christ teachings for political gain. >> your buzzer beater everyone. mitt romney cracks a joke at gingrich's expense. here he is talking about newt's failure to qualify for the virginia ballot. >> i think you compare that to pearl harbor. i think it's more like lucille ball at the chocolate factory. you've got to get it organized. >> if you could compare the republican race as a whole with a sitcom, what would it be? maria? >> it's got to be the simpsons. they love to portray republicans like heartless millionaires, like montgomery burns or pathetic clowns. he ran as a republican saying you may want to vote for a democrat but you want a heartless republican. >> it's certainly more amusing than using a major attack during world war ii as an analogy. chris, what sitcom would it be? >> well, i'm the typical conservative here. i can't make up my mind. first of all mitt romney cracked a joke? what, did he get, i don't know, a swag transplant? so that's first of all. second of all, i
