Transcripts For CNN Election Day in America 20240706

thursday, who knows. let's take a look at some of the key states that will be voting and ultimately determine the shape of congress. let's start out in arizona. a state that took days to project the 2020 presidential winner. interestingly in arizona, the later ballots were good for the gop in 2020, which was a reversal of what happened in 2018. and this one they're going to be talking about. some states, later ballots are related to gop. and some states are good for the democrats. let's go to one of those states where it's better for the democrats in 2020 and 2021. you may remember there was in fact a 2021 senate runoff in georgia. and it was not determined who won those runoffs, and told the wednesday after the election. so it took a long time to count. it took even longer that general election back in november of 2020. here, the later counted ballots were good for the democrats in 2021, and in 2020. remember biden keeps getting gaining gaining. then ultimately biden over to trump. heard from arizona where he had early advantage until biden barely held on. let's go to nevada, under the state of the southwest. again, another state took days to protect the 2020 presidential winner. they later canter ballot, like in arizona, we are good for the gop in 2020. or unclear if that will hold this year, you're gonna have to wait and see. is we got to be a prologue. >> let's go to pennsylvania. a status right there. the commonwealth of pennsylvania near there to my heart. i love the state of pennsylvania where the commonwealth of pennsylvania. i want to get the haiti mess. it's a taste projected 20 to the presidential winner. they later candid ballots were good for democrats in 2020. as those late mail-in ballots came and we think it's going to be what happens this time around. but we're not exactly sure. but keep an eye on pennsylvania causes such important state. in terms of controlled it as a senate. i just wanna point out some important house races will call closing for 8 pm. these districts will probably get the vote counted fairly quickly. so could give us a good idea of where the house is going. these are some really tight races. north carolina's 13 district. ohio's 13th district. virgin seventh and virgin second greszler. these are racism really going to be watching gives a good understanding early on and how these evenings go. back to you guys. >> okay, it's very much very. now i want to bring it postelection, or rank. let's frank, you are so wonderful to join us. as we launch election day. we -- first things i want to officially be cnn's very first guest on election day. we i've 12:02 am. he's coast time. and max frequently watching indiana. which is it interesting race which favorite to democrats. it's a very strong republican there. the seat is a pro biden seat, we but the public has been running strong. we will also look at the cincinnati ohio district of steve chabot. and he's been a congressman since 1994. who's been losing one race above 15 years ago. there are number places are like this. i i think it is more important, at this moment, to talk about what happens if the election isn't decided in a few hours. or even in a few days. annegret the corresponded. we a lot of these races in pennsylvania we're not gonna know by bennett. we're not gonna know by 7 am the next morning, in georgia. which requires a runoff if no one gets or 50%. we may not know for weeks. and people have to let all the votes be counted. what >> concerns you the most but the fact we won't know tomorrow? we >> and we know we're gonna be demanding to know the outcome. and that we assume that if it takes this long time that there are games being played for the ballots. i don't want to repeat of 2020. which is why i am so grateful to have this have with the wall. that we have to lower the decibel level. we have to say to people that, but, we have the highest early vote ever. in this country. more people cast more ballots and more different ways. in polling places that it's ever happened. voter suppression is not happening. and voter corruption is not happening. with the possible exception, and i'll call it out, a philadelphia. let's see what they do. but this idea of our election system big so broken. we are actual democracies at stake. and i'm afraid that we are now having or reaching a point or actually have americans doubly versatile actions anymore. that is a disaster. >> i don't marzipan. or this week is going to change. that right? people are so distrustful of this system, and doesn't help that some candidates have openly said that they're not going to accept or it's all that they don't win. >> honestly, i'm trying to think of the best word to describe that. that is pathetic. your parents teach you, as a child, how to lose. i hope they do. that we don't like loud, brash, of not just winners. and we don't like sore losers. as a country we've always been on the side of the underdog, the people win and lose elections. you wouldn't do sporting events. and life events south, you get the job, you don't get the, job he move on. i think it is absolutely correct for news organizations to hold the candidates accountable because when you've got more than half a percentage of the vote, abide by all the rules and regulations of an election. and someone loses by half a percent, they still lost. and you live to fight again. and if you forget to remind people that a gracious loser is as important as a victorious winner. and that with grace and respect and dignity. we leave a proper legacy for the next generation. unfortunately had embarrassment in 2020, and afraid we could have a few dozen 2022. >> from the person candidates airs. last, frank. we were fortified milley people voted. what do you make about that has more than the past two midterms. >> and some states like georgia, its advantage for the democrats. in ohio and florida. it's advantageous -- his trying for the heisman season. i spent reelection participation that we've seen in the last 50 or 100 years. that's a healthy democracy. she respect that and see that to remind those who have not voted, that everybody else is voting. it is participating. and this trump democratic system depends on an active and well informed and well-intentioned electorate. so to me, it is a good, sign not a bad sign that a democracy is working. and that the way that we count the vote in the ballots. and where we count the votes, when hands that rather than detract from it. >> frank, great talking to. thank you for being our first guest on election day. and we will talk to many times this week, i am sure. we >> we think about we are now on election day. and for all the candidates they've been waiting, they've been caffeinated. they've been thinking about the day. here we are a few hours, we still know nothing. and a few hours we couldn't know more. we have cnn's john vermont and charlie dent and election day. we may not have all the answers the next ten, 12, more hours. but this is the day that many voters will not be undecided. whether doctrine about, who they were to vote for. what you can be watching for, maria? >> at the grid going to be watching for the turn of the day of. we've been talk about the record turnout in the early vote. and i am chilled about that because that, right now, has put democrats over and above republicans by almost 4.5 million votes. that has given democrats across the board and campaigns ability to build a fire wall. and the ability to be able to now go after their low propensity voters the day of elections beginning. as opposed to three hours before the polls close. that is a huge strategic advantage for a campaign. now, i'd also indicates, to me that enthusiasm is absolutely there for democrats. we are matching it, if not going over what republicans are. so the whole doom and gloom about back in with a season for democrats is not showing up. we see is the red wave still eminent? on the day of election? we know that erupted the folks in the voting they've election. there's a piece the washington post said they're kind of nowhere that they sort of messed up the early vote and they're trying to get people in the war of the week at the vote. we want to see when a turn others across the board and saved democrats in that judges hold across the board in this very competitive election and what should not have been a very competitive election. charlie? this is where democrats are playing -- would be a rough night for them. a question of how bad. democrats are playing defense. we'll have to defend rhode island. they have to defend connecticut hawkers underperforming in new york. republicans pick up as many as five seats. that is harsh reality. republicans would have to beat many democrats to get the majority. in fact, they've been has to be done in them. so i think it's going to be a tough night. i'm not here to make any ground prediction about a red ripple. tomorrow the bill robinson side then the democrat side. because they're running to win. i'd run against a midterm election when it wasn't favorable. it is a hard thing to beat history. good luck, turnout numbers, and seen some turnout numbers that are not particularly helpful. to the democrats, as well. -- >> republicans are putting these races away. you should absolutely -- republicans should've been put in this away months ago. and they are not, voters are not convinced of this moment in time that they should be giving control of congress to republicans. that's, right around the fence, and so many races. that may give us hope it election cycle or relations have any. >> we look at it and think about all that's happened in the last minute. you're right to think about there are open seats. republicans only need to have a net gain of five seats in the congress to be able to take the majority. i mean, in the house, one of the senate. but i wonder if the closest of these races, what does that say to you. as on these battleground states is not as if anyone is a clear runaway. is it about the quality of candidates? are we in a situation where once again it is reminiscent of the lesser of two evils? the different areas? or we have a point where, look, people are really really appealing. >> first, of all let me, say they don't just want anybody on the first election day panel. -- >> i was gonna say that. absolutely. >> look, there's two different things. there's a house in the senate, they behave very differently. and midterm elections. senate elections don't necessarily move the way the waves to the reason is because there are much bigger campaigns bigger figures or off and more well-known in their states. so in the recent answer your question is. why is it is quote as maria suggesting some cases? part of it is candid quality. mitch mcconnell did not get many of the candidates he wanted some of these key states. it's been closer. and the home side of pennsylvania there are scenarios you could've imagined where republican would be running 5 to 10 points, and 5 to 7 points ahead now. then pennsylvania. mehmet oz is not. in georgia, the incoming democrat raphael warnock is a very strong seed. it's a very strong candidate. obviously as we close race because this is the most purple purple state. so seen as a strong candidate. that is the kind of thing you see. they're in the house overall trends tend to matter more. the economic trends can sink as a combat presidents party. joe biden's party, the democratic party, what's keeping him up could be the dobbs ruling. maybe that would have democrats keep the house from the ababa as shellacking of 63 seats? i can't read my writing in 2010. this could keep that in the twenties or the teens. there so the other thing is redistricting. which is more and more people split the people. the fewer fewer districts can swing. >> there may be 25, 30, truly competitive house seats. that is it. there aren't that many. and republicans, well, they exceeded expectations to 2020. they got the low hanging fruit in the last election. so the picnic would be hard. they're not gonna have a big's wave is 2010. maybe if they win 2025 seats they will have 240, which is 37 states, maybe. that's a pretty big majority. if they perform at that level. >> if you look at the trends, this year, and the house specials. democrats have completely overperformed. if you look at new york 19, republican should've won there. pat ride one, focus on abortion. i think there's underlying career that people are discounting that the dobbs energy is absolutely still. there >> special elections really have no impact on what's going to happen in the fall. we saw that in 2010. we lost a special election -- needed. democrats will integrate 2010. only to get wiped out four months later. i mean i've seen this happen many times. >> everybody is talking about control congress, but what about the dozens of governors races across the country. we're gonna bring those down, next. >> within the republican party i think there are people looking at kari lake as someone who could be the future of the party, if it is not on the scientists. she is someone who generated a great deal of energy and within the republican party, despite the fact that she is. or she flirts with that fridge. of the republican party that a lot of people lined to be scary. the election denying fringe there. but she has proven herself to be a strong, candidate in terms of the skills it takes to communicate with people. i think that still counts for something. >> i don't think she is 30. i think she is in the long term relationship with that front. she's one of famously said that, when that's multiple times, whether she would accept the results of the election. she kept saying, i will win that election, and i will accept those results and refused to say that when you lost should accept those results. and to continuously talks about the 2020 election was rigged and that there is going to be something there with fraud. i'm frank's talking about this. but that is something that everyone needs to be very concerned about, as americans. that indicate with him is that he can call the republicans because have known that the democratic party that has ever said that they would not accept the results of an election. kari lake is the person they represent that in republican party. i think it's dangerous, i think it's scary. it's a very good chance of winning. i'm told, when i talk to the helps campaign earlier. that the narrative has swung more and careless direction than what the data actually shows. there's a marris poll out today that has any hopes up one. >> you're saying the hopes campaign believes that momentum for carrie like? >> no, the media narrative is focusing more on that momentum than what they actually shows. i wish it shows that katie hobbs is up one. and the conversations with voters in the hopes campaign they are very concerned about this issue of democracy. and there's hope there. again, very topsy-turvy election. we don't know what's could happen. >> if you contrast kari lake, she's much more polished media savvy version of doug mastriano. election deniers. she has real skills. frankly, proponents are the underwhelming candidate from what i can tell. if you contrast to say mastriano and pennsylvania, he just way out there. and just has run the most unconventional, unorthodox campaign of ever seen in the media. it is bizarre. the whole thing is bizarre. and he's going to get beat. but, he is saying the same things in many respects as she is on election denial. , she's got great candidates skills and she's probably going to prevail. >> the interesting thing about kari lake katie hobbs is we have people who are starting to be the election the dire, obviously, kari lake. i get someone whose job it was to certify the election. >> the election guru. >> >> you've had these races so it's almost like an idea of maybe it's not a debate. but about these very issues. and i wonder, how much that will impact the voters of arizona? the idea of a abating notion of -- xi won't even debate. what was him aqua to dignify her with the debate. others would say they are afraid. we wonder how the voters will feel that. >> you just never know. obviously, you've seen cases where people, there people pennsylvania who think that john fetterman shouldn't have debated oz at all. that avoids the bait who had been better off. it's impossible to know whether katie hobbs or benefit or not? i think voters always benefit from seeing as much of the candidates as they can. campaigns will do whatever they think benefits them. period. i would say, if kari lake does manage to win. it may show the limits of what voters perceive in terms of the threats to democracy, or how effective concern over the threat democracy will be as a campaign issue. because, to be fair, nested flirting. she's denied it. and it's clear. and people see it. full stop. she may still win. and that's what the voters don't know this. the voters know her position on this, at this point in arizona. but they still may elector. >> look at nevada. just north of arizona. republicans may win their. >> we'll see, both the six is very close, we'll see. we >> don't put your money in the powerball yet we. everyone stay -- how much of the quality of the candidates factor into how voters pat castor ballots for today. that will be next. electronic voice: it's a cat. >> hey there, alison. it's no longer this mare let -- they are now this full court press trying to get every vote that they cannot. for tomorrow here. with who are active on the campaign trail. we saw rafa warnock, in his closing remarks to the voters earlier tonight in columbus georgia. we said this really is a choice between democrat republican. as much as a moral choice. between what is right and wrong. he stated confidence but express there might be a runoff here in georgia either candidate gets 50% or runoff is triggered. that runoff will be december 6th. meanwhile, republican challenger, herschel walker. he seemed to scoff at the idea of a runoff. boldly predicting that when it's all said and done he will be the rightful winner. he blasted warnock as-able candidate and said that georgians are really tied from trees and joe biden over georgians tomorrow is going to be more later today, it's good to be the real test on the test of whether georgia as a true battleground state. and democrats would like to think so. especially after what happened 2020 with joe biden winning here. the first democratic president since clinton back in 92 to win the state. they also said to progressive senators to washington. already, and 17 days of early voting whether 2.2 million votes have been cast. and the polls are close. polls expect open here later today at 7 am. >> thank you dick. >> i want to go to you. speak about accounts in areas. i think only one of two that to trump biden in the recent election. so what are you hearing now in the hours before the polling centers are set to open? >> hi laura it's an important state. i think democrats best opportunity to take the counties, two counties away from trump to biden in 2020. has been called something as a bellwether county because it echoes the demographics of the state, and it often ends up echoing the result of the state. officials here have said they're ready. early voting has been big in the state as well. whether million early votes have been cast. that is more than 20% of the total vote. back in 2018. and the 28 had been terms. and their final pitches, remember dallas, the republican candidate at a rally in montgomery county just south of air between hair and philadelphia. competition with him and nikki haley hit fetterman on issues like the economy, the border, and called on his supporters, once again to reach out to conservative democrats and independents, and to go beyond the republican party. the republican friends. to get them to come out to support odds. that woman had his final pitch at a union hall in pittsburgh talking about finding oz back to josé. that's hitting him on this idea of being a carpetbagger. i found them to just get out, get out to the polls. we spoke here with the kind executive, mockler hair in and of hampton county but what they expect here. they believe the turnout is going to be higher than usual, because they're seeing a lot of voter enthusiasm, they are seeing a lot of in d.c. evident and they're saying they're ready. here's what he had to say. >> mark county council has invested heavily in the millions of dollars and helping us prepare to meet the new burdens of pennsylvania have mail-in voting ballots. so, we've bought a high-speed letter opener, we've had several high-speed scanners, we really made investments in our election infrastructure to make sure that we cannot only be accurate but fast. >> and one thing that we heard from this official. in the nearby lehigh county. here's what we've seen in the past. as is a lot more democrats. about three times as many democrats requested mail-in ballots as republicans. so fetterman's campaign is already warning supporters, coming on a memo, saying the looks and results can take a while to shake out here. you could see it appears that there is a wet mirage they've called it. there could be democratic votes that are mail-in votes. then being counted later. of course, pennsylvania is a state where they're not allowed to open those mail-in ballots. until 7 am. when the polls open. laura, alison. >> thanks, nick thank you. athena also high on carolina are also set for big senate shutdowns. i want to bring that john berman, maria cardona, and charlie dent. we are looking at this idea where we are. the polls, obviously, where many people have voted early already. but the question keeps coming back is who's on the ballot and the quality of the candidates to win their. and i'm wondering from your perspective, do you see -- in pennsylvania where this is been a showdown with him again. in this election cycle. do you see that his being the crux of the issue for so many voters? >> the candidates? >> the quality may not be there? >> candidates still matter. i would argue that the matter. less because of the voting patterns in this country. i think they matter more in the senate. republicans certainly have had candid to policy issues. that said, a lot of candidates can still win. i have happen to represent to northampton county. that's my district we that is a swinging sheet. with the counties had voted for donald trump. >> by the way, watch north canton to it. that might be the most important county in the country. and 2020, have hampton county we just said they kind of pretty fast. they had all the mail-in votes counted by about 7 am. the morning after the election. i knew, at that moment, the biden won pennsylvania. if you won that counted by handful of votes. i watch a county, it's a bellwether we it is trended republican but it is be a heavy democratic county. not more. as holmes of the best i'm still corporation my father worked for 30 years. i know that area very well. it is my blood. >> do you mean watch pennsylvania? watch a particular area? see who controls the senate. what do you mean in terms of pennsylvania politics specifically? >> i don't want to go as far say whoever wins northampton county will win pennsylvania but they'll probably be the case. it's probably the most competitive house races in the country. that is not connect right now. and that is also i two women, susan wild which he shall are running for it. that's what we want to watch. over $25 million are spent between the two campaigns. >> do you get a cat? i >> wish. but i think i know a lot we -- >> would put a caveat on what charlie said. because actually do think the candidate quality matters. the reason i think that we have a really didn't. i still think that convention was the, and the history part of this election. and this of be a complete and total right wife for public as we're not seeing right now. i do agree that candid qualities matter to the public and party anymore. we're seeing that in georgia. where everyone -- >> united's that, do you agree with it? >> i'll say that fetterman is not a particular good candidate. i'll be very honest with you. >> he may not like i'm personally but -- >> now i think this is a weak candidate. >> mehmet oz is someone who has done things that have hurt people. and puppies i. we and then carry like, we just talked about her, and elections enters, and we talk about all of them. and people want to take away women's rights to choose and make them second-class citizens. that's a democracy. all these issues, i think, are front and center for democrats, progressives, independents, and frankly, some common sense republicans who don't believe that these kinds of candida tax represent their party. liz cheney, for example. and while i think that this is a cycle where candidate quality does matter for people outside hard-core republicans. we saw that in georgia, they are running to herschel walker, and he is just -- i'm sorry, he's just not a very nice human being, if we are to believe everything that he is accused of doing. and [inaudible] >> john the one thing on this?
