Panama City Florida approves land purchase for workforce housing

Approving the lowest of two appraisals, the city approved $537,000 for the purchase of six parcels on a total of 2.49 acres zoned for commercial use at 309 Elm Ave. in Millville. Bracing for any conversation about the price tag, elected officials kept their eyes on the future residential use.
"It's a commercial property and so it's worth whatever it's worth," said Commissioner Jenna Haligas. But, she added, Panama City residents should "keep in mind this is for the greater vision of revitalizing and giving breath to Millville."
"Staff feels a development in this area would not only increase property values, but also improve quality of life for citizens who will live in close proximity to the park and kayak launch," Michael Johnson, the city's director of Community Development Block Grants and state Housing Incentives Program, wrote in the request for approval.
