lie. now, the national spotlight is on voter suppression tactics, and voting rights activists such as stacey abrams are running for state office. last year we were at the height of the pandemic, and although the first vaccine had just been administered, it would be months until it was available to everyone. now, hopefully hospitalizations and ventilators won't become a reality for most of us because now we're all boosted, right? so, as we reflect on 2021 and look into the crystal ball of 2022, i'm going to be my optimistic self and see the glass as half full. joining me now for some inspiration this sunday, dr. barry c. black, 62nd chaplain of the united states senate, and bishop michael curry, presiding bishop of the episcopal church. gentlemen, welcome to "the sunday show." please forgive my attire this day after christmas. but i really thank you both for coming back to "the sunday show." chaplain black, let me start with you. like i said, this is the day after christmas. and christmas time the holidays are tough and can be tough for a lot of people and certainly over the year that we have had it has been tough. words of inspiration for people getting up this sunday morning. >> well, i would say to people, remember the reason for the season. and to me, the most important christmas gift that i have received is not the bow ties i often get, the clip ones that you try to avoid, but the nip it in the bud bow tie, but i get the realization that god cared so much for humanity that he came on a mission to extricate us from a predicament of certain destruction. and i love that. i love feeling special and feeling important. the pivotal moment in my life, jonathan, came when my mother gave me a nickel for memorizing 1 peter 1:18 saying, we are redeemed not with perishable things such as silver and gold, but with the blood of jesus christ. and i tell you, that makes christmas special. it makes me want to shout. i sing christmas carols in july. that's how much i love christmas. and if you can't get inebriated with joy from the realization that the transcendent entered our murky world, there is nothing i can do to help you. >> bishop curry, i think i heard you chuckling there in the background. your words of inspiration for people this sunday morning. >> i can hardly do better than my brother chaplain black. he got inebriated with the spirit. i love that one. but i got to tell you, he's so right. if you think back on the first christmas, even in the -- in the gospels themselves, in matthew's version in the coming of jesus christ into the world, it was a miracle that happened in the middle of a mess. on the one hand, you had joseph struggling to believe the miracle that god was coming into the world through his -- his espoused wife. yet to be his wife. and yet he eventually accepted the miracle, but at first he thought it was a mess, that this was god coming into the world, and it was coming in god's way, not the human way. but more than that, if you look at the story in matthew, there is a king named herrod sitting on the throne in the area where jesus was born, this king heard rumors there was a child king, a child messiah to be born and he set out on a process of destroying this child for as he thought he was a rival to the throne and the bible says he killed hebrew jewish baby boys in a mad genocidal attempt. jesus was born in the midst of a human mess, of the powers of the world, seeking to thwart the way of god's love and god's light in the world and jesus was born anyway. that gives me hope. that's where our faith is grounded. not just in the happy stuff. but grounded in the reality that we have got a god who knows how to deal with trouble, and knows how to take a mess and working with us can make a miracle out of that mess. that's what christmas is about. and that's why i want to join the angel choir and sing gloria in excelsio deo. >> even though this is the day after christmas and this is sunday morning, there might be a lot of viewers out there for whom christianity is not their -- is not the religion that they practice. there are also folks who might not be a part of organized religion, but are spiritual. and then there might be people out there who are atheists. given we have been through covid, we still are dealing with the after effects of the insurrection at the capitol. and folks feeling anxious about the state of our democracy and whether we're going to be able to keep it as a result of a whole bunch of laws that are being passed or in the case of voting rights not being passed as of yet. what can you say to those folks to at a minimum keep their hope alive that things will get better and that the country will hang together? chaplain black? >> well, i would say whether you are a christian or a buddhist or hindu, whatever your religious tradition may be, nearly every religious tradition that has a sacred literature teaches the efficacy of prayer. i believe tennison was right when he said more things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of. and i really believe that regardless of your faith, if you call on the transcendent, you are going to seeing some happen. i believe that that is one of the ways to move the arm of the transcendent. now if you are an atheist, i would tell you to probably embrace some of the philosophies of the greco roman stoics, and the foundation of stoicism is know what you can control, and know what you can't control. you can't control external forces that come against you. but you can control your response to those external forces. and i've got to slip it in, i know we're talking to a diverse group of people and their perspectives, but calvary, i know that word disturbs some folks, calvary is an example of overwhelming external forces coming at someone, and when the smoke clears, it was show time for the one who was supposed to be executed. put in the zoom, he said, it is my time now. father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. so we choose how we're going to respond, jonathan. don't get me happy again. i started getting happy when the bishop used alliteration, miracle in the midst. but we, regardless of our philosophical or religious proclivities, we determine how we're going to respond. and that is what victor franco was talking about in his man in search of meaning. the father of local therapy. he said regarding the nazis and he said you can -- you can kill me, but you can't harm me. i determine how i respond. i got to back off, jonathan. it is getting too much for me right in here. >> i was going to say, also, because we are so over time, i wish, bishop curry, you have to blame chaplain black for me not being able to ask you a final question. bishop michael curry, thank you for coming back to "the sunday show." dr. barry black, thank you for coming back to "the sunday show." coming up, what was the biggest story of 2021? >> jonathan, we got the biggest story of the year, six days in to 2021. the insurrection. and for me it is twofold. it is the depth and the planning involved on the part of elected officials and members of trump's cabinet. it is so much worse than a lot of people imagined. and we can't even get our heads around what we still don't know. that was a power point, you know, this is a multipronged efforts of many republicans brainstorming how to overturn an election and cheat 81 million voters. if other nations did that, the u.s. would be talking about imposing sanctions. we knew this was well planned. no tourist brings home a noose to d.c. for a sight-seeing trip. the insurrection didn't end when the perpetrators left the capitol. the insurrection wasn't stopped. the rebellion wasn't crushed. it moved to republican legislations in numerous states where restrictive voting acts are being enacted and it moved from school boards, it continues to go on. and i think something we also can't forget is the long stench of the insurrection. half the republicans still believe the big lie. a third of republicans believe violence is necessary to achieve their political means. so for me, there is no other story and the year that has so many big stories can come close to the insurrection. >> tara setmire, for you, biggest story of 2021. >> i agree with renee. we have never seen anything like this in our country's history and we literally saw within minutes the peaceful transition of power, the 250 reign of our democracy on the brink. if it wasn't for the heroic efforts of officer goodman, we have no idea how much more tragic that day could have been as far as, you know, with him directing the crowd in a different direction, protecting the vice president, mitt romney. what we saw that day, how our police officers there were overrun, how, you know, no one -- a woman lost her life trying to break into the speaker's lobby. what we saw that day was so harrowing. we saw a rebel flag of the confederacy being flown inside our capitol. we didn't even see that during the civil war. i agree with renee, we cannot ignore the significance of what happened that day, and for me, i look at it as a former republican, someone who spent 27 years of my adult life in the republican party, i look at that and think how could the republican party not repudiate it. how could they not finally say enough is enough after something like that? and yet they did not. they continued to embrace donald trump. and the malignancy of trumpism. it was a practice run. and we're looking at the consequences that need to come from this, so i look at the january 6th commission and i'm glad to see them moving along and, you know, things are starting to get done here. we really need to see significant consequences for what happened, and for democrats even on the state level, renee mentioned this, it didn't end there, because we see what is happening now at the state and local levels. what the republicans are doing is they're laying the predicate for people to not believe in the integrity of our elections, so that when the next time this comes around, then what happens? so that is the biggest story is not only what happened that day, but also the way in which a major party in this country decided to embrace the authoritarian and ill liberalism of what brought that to the forefront instead of walking away from it. that's such a danger to our democracy moving forward. >> john, for you, is it january 6th? >> yeah. i was there. and i was in the capitol that day and, i mean, i agree with everything my colleagues said, and i will say a couple of things, one, i was -- i was in the rotunda, the big round part of the capitol, when i was the only reporter there at one point when they're trying to break in the east capitol doors and i saw capitol police running around with machine guns and they made a decision not to open fire on those rioters, those insurrectionists, and i'm still haunted by that, to be honest with you, because i, you know, if they had opened fire, they would have probably taken a lot of lives, probably would have been a lot of people killed and who knows what kind of weapons were in that crowd there could have been a shootout at the united states capitol on, you know, on a real insurrection, a real bloody insurrection. and in a way, i have it stuck in my mind, that's what those insurrectionists wanted. they wanted martyr. they kind of wanted martyrs. they were okay with if people got killed in the capitol. after that whole day they brought us back in, you know, seven or eight hours later and the house and the senate continued to vote -- certify the electoral college victory of now president biden. and 140 republicans voted objected. we just had an insurrection. we just -- i worked in the capitol for 30 years. and i still can't get over that. they still -- 140 of them voted against certifying biden's election, you know. and, like, they couldn't -- they couldn't put it -- they couldn't take in what had just happened and do the right thing. and i still can't get past that. and so i'm kind of haunted by january 6th. what happened, what could happen, what it means, and trump is still out there. trump is never -- trump is still the head of the republican party. they go down and hold events in mar-a-lago because they want trump's approval. his isolation and his castigation lasted what, about a month? my panel is back with me now to break it all down. renee, tara and john. okay, john, i'll come to you first. as you said in the last block, you worked up there for 30 something years, you said three decades, but i've been talking a long time, since the insurrection, that there san is an atmosphere of menace on capitol hill. has that atmosphere of menace dissipated or increased since january 6th? >> i don't know really how to evaluate that. i mean, there is -- i mean, recently we had the president and vice president on the hill and a person with a gun at the same time. in the weeks and months after january 6th, i mean, it was -- the hill was unrecognizable to me. there were thousands of national guard troops. i feel like it is better, but, you know, then poor officer billy evans got killed at the gate. there is still incidents, threats out there. from members, you know, i think the tension between members, i mean, i started covering congress in, you know, pre-newt gingrich era and it was so toxic then. it is not even -- it is not even comparable. today, what we have is an order of magnitude greater by several orders of magnitude greater. they generally -- they generally -- house democrats are generally -- some are generally afraid of their republican colleagues, that they are a physical threat to them. i just -- there are still metal detectors outside the house chambers. so could i say it is better? or worse? i think -- i don't know. i think a year later the level of distrust is bad as it has ever been and, you know, just scratch the surface and it is right there. >> so, tara, i'm reminded of something mitch mcconnell said earlier in the year when there is talk about, you know, doing away with the filibuster. and he went to the floor and said, basically, y'all better watch out, because if you do it now, when we come back into power, it is going to be scorched earth. like, that's not an idle threat. if republicans become the majority in the house or the senate, it is going to be scorched earth. >> 100%. listen, however you feel about mitch mcconnell, he knows what the hell he's doing as senate majority leader. i mean, you can argue that mitch mcconnell still is running the senate, even as minority leader this year, with how dysfunctional the senate has been under chuck schumer's leadership, unfortunately. but, listen, the republicans have already demonstrated what they'll do. when the democrats first changed the rules for judicial nominations, when harry reid was leader, they did it because they wanted to unlock the gridlock concerning obama's federal judges, right. what did the republicans do. they said, okay, hold my beer. and then what did they do, they got rid of the filibuster majority rules for supreme court nominees. so, you think that -- you think that mitch mcconnell is not going get rid of the filibuster all together to push forward whatever legislative agenda republicans want. of course they will. he already said in front of donors, republican donors, they're not putting forth the legislative agenda for the 2022. they're going sit back and attack democrats and just sit there and wait until they take power again. so, you know, it is a wake-up call. you don't think that in the house if you get a majority -- a speaker of the house mccarthy who i don't think that's ever going to happen. i shocked you when i said -- >> you blew my mind. >> or one of the other, you know, political -- out there on the republican side, but don't think they will try to impeach joe biden or kamala harris or both of them at the same time. they have no interest in governing. the republicans are a nongoverning party. they want to own the libs and put forth authoritarian means to win elections. that's not a joke. we see it happening. >> i'm glad you brought that up. on the house side, if you do get a speaker jim jordan, a speaker marjorie taylor greene, let's be fanciful here, speaker madison cawthorn, it is not going to happen, but if the house -- if republicans take over the house, doesn't tara have a point, that all hell's going to break loose and they could file articles of impeachment against the president and the vice president? >> okay, can i just say, first, jonathan, speaker jim jordan? hush yourself. don't even put that out into the universe. >> tara, don't play mean. >> i mean, all hell will break loose. nothing will get done. this will be a vengeance fantasy that quentin tarantino could not have dreamt of. it is going to be payback time. mcconnell has said it, trump has certainly said it, and that's what this is about. it is always about amassing power for the sake of power. but we need to always be clear, the malignancy that is now the republican party has been lying in wait for years. and now it is really coming to the fore. trump didn't create it. all he did was exploit it. and so i keep thinking back to when there would be some sort of terrorist attack and there was a muslim group behind it and people would say, where are all the good muslims?
