party, the party of yachts and country clubs and billionaires whose goal is to pay zero in taxes so they don't have to foot the bill for you or anyone to drive on the road. that party has aggressively branded itself as the working class party for years. and republicans do that because it works. white working class americans began voting in large numbers in the 1960s and '70s, pushed largely in the gop camp not by their own desire but the democrats moving on civil rights. but the push, the glopping up of whis voters who had for a long time been democrats, republicans mopping up those voters helped to secure one florida man's presidential victory. people refer to the donald who was born with $317 billion in his golden pockets and who had a golden toilet as a working class billionaire, bananas but it still works. and the con remains in full effect. >> the most significant political change in the past decade has been that the heart and soul of the republican party, we are a working class party. >> the republican party grew with the blue collar worker. it was a forgotten man and woman that trump listened to the voice that no one listened to. >> the president tried to make the republican party a working class party. the president tried to focus on the concerns, the needs, the family security and their jobs. he was right to do so. >> hear the whistles this. the dog whistles. the republicans are pouring gas line on the social anxiety. the social anxiety, that the media was lulled into economic anxiety in 2016 as they gear up for 2022. but folks, it's alive. it's also a scam, which is why underneath the blue collar venn vaneer. you see a gender neutral potato, and the cancel culture, and $15,000 a head to attend. there are no working class union people there. but saying little to nothing at the conference about protecting your mortgage or your health care or your job, but the most clear cut sign of their staggering hypocrisy is they are standing in the ray of a piece of legislation that will stand in the way and sooif their lives. that is the nearly $2 trillion covid relief bill that is currently debated in the senate. we are close to seven mours from the voterama, the long, long process of passing a bill in the senate. it includes $1400 checks and unemployment benefits set to last until mid march. and ron johnson, in an episode of that was a waste of time, forced clerks to win 628 pages of the bill, and delayed the proceedings by 11 hours while he left and went on his way. and mitch mcconnell called the bill wildly expensive even though he supported the trump tax plan that involved the same amount of money. today, democrats seem to agree to lowering the unemployment benefit to $300 a week, and coverage until september. president biden was for $400 a week, and this is what senator mcconnell has to say about that. >> this isn't state p insurance. it's borrowing from our kids and grand kids for a cash bonus for not working. >> joining us is medi hassan. sunday, god listens to prayers, and carlos, former republican congressman from florida. it's true. medi, i will start with you. i feel like i have to remind people about how popular -- here are two polls. one poll shows 76% of americans want the win. 89% and democrats and 60% of republicans. the other poll. it's 68 still in total. this is a popular bill and yet you have republicans who are in $174,000 in fresh money they probably don't spend because they are multimillionaires. you don't need $300. it blows my mind. your thoughts. >> i'm so glad you open the show with that topic. it frustrates the hell out of me. the shtick the party of workers, the party of little guys. you played the clip on ted cruz on fox news. he claimed they were the party -- democrats have let down unions. do you remember the last time ted cruz voted for anything pro labor union. he wanted to bring in a national right to work law. he never voted for an crease in minimal wage. will not vote for paid parental leave. they talk about blue collar working class. it's white working class they are referring to. not the working class as a whole. they are talking about white working class voters and they talk the talk. you have a covid relief bill. they don't want to vote for increased minimum wage. i mean, it's absurd for them to dlim be a worker's party when they have no interest in work. mitch mcconnell ran through the tax cuts, the same amount that went to millionaires and billionaires. he is a champion of workers. if ted cruz went to the ritz-carlton, the well known working class vacation. and don't believe your eyes and ears, believe us. >> it's wild. i mean, carlos, i know your district very well. key west, some very affluent parts of miami, southern miami. it's seesawed between democrats and republicans. but overall, you kind of live that in congress. you have very wealthy donors in key west who just want tax cuts. they want the taxes to be as low as possible and you have regular people who are thinking, i wish i can get a tax cut. they are not at the tax rate where they can think about it. but the idea of rich people, the key west type, saying it's obscene for people to get an extra 300 bucks, for people to get $1400 to them. but it's everything to people who are broke. don't you find it just obscene just as a thing? >> well, joy, i know this area but you know it too. this is your old stomping grounds, and i will say, you're putting your finger on the identity crisis the republican party is having. the republican trump is never a populism party. trump's goal was to get elected and be popular. if i had to bet, trump would sign it in law. yet you have senators like ron johnson, someone who worships at the altar of donald trump, rejecting the bill, and now, americans will be 345ed whole this bill but you kind of see how the republicans are struggling. they don't have trump telling them what it's okay to do anymore. so they're kind of directionless. that is what we're seeing in response to this american rescue plan. some of them went in the white house and wanted to negotiate something. now they are pulling back. this a party that really doesn't have a policy compass and they are wondering what to do. >> i feel it's opposite day every day. the party wants to regulate the internet so people cannot tweet bad things about donald trump, and regulate that people cannot cancel people off twitter. they are sudden by physically responsible. it's too expensive for who? the wealthy taxpayers who say i don't want to pay for health care. i don't want to pay taxes. everything is the opposite. so i have to ask you when you look at the fact that democrats are try fog negotiate with people, they are trying to say, let's have bipartisanship, and mitt romney, the most heroic republican ever because he said two of three words against donald trump, he is also super rich and against minimum wage. they are all against it. i don't know what we do on the other side of this if we have so many democrats saying, but, but, but i want them to be my friends. >> we know focus on the democrats like those who behave absurdly. and you have tina smith saying i was supportive on the filibuster, and now i no longer am. they are not radical democrats. they have been radicalized. and you know, you talk about what they're up to right now. this is the party of the worker at a time when american workers are suffering like they have never suffered before. and switch on fox news. don't, but if you do, you will see dr. seuss instead of doctors on the front line. mr. potato head. instead of mr. smith. they pretend to care about things like the deficit. republicans caring about the deficit is like the royal family pretending to care about meghan markle. they don't care. thai don't about the deficit. they don't care about anything. and joe biden, one thing he is doing well, he is -- put his eye on the prize and he said, we're doing this. we're doing this bill. i would love for to you come along for the ride. but we're doing it. because we have to -- and that message discipline is rare from democrats. we had it from biden. >> you're absolutely right. you're absolutely right on that. go ahead, carlos. >> just briefly, i will say, i am a fan of bipartisanship. i always tried to work with democrats when i was in congress. but it is true if one party, republicans refuse to agree to anything, it becomes very difficult to work -- >> let me ask you a question. let me ask you a question. a lot of people say they are fans of bipartisanship. an idea is either right for the country or it's wrong. if it's right, you will come along for it. but bipartisanship, it's point lts. but for you, do you think that if -- i know you're in the other 3w0 body but if the senate god rid -- you would get bipartisanship. if they knew democrats would pass whatever they wanted, then republicans who wanted something would have to come to the table. there would be nowhere else to go. don't you think getting rid of the filibuster would produce the things you like? >> that's a theory and we never tried it. i guess we have to try to see. i agree that bipartisanship is not an act. it's a means far durable policy. if you pass something with 60 votes, it's more likely it's going to stick. if you get it through congress, it's more like lie that will stick rather than executive order. the goal is to pass bushible policy. that is where it's important. bipartisanship is not an end. getting along is not an end. getting good results for the american beam, delivers policy, that is an end and if bipartisanship can help, that is great. i do understand both houses controlling and sometimes the only option the party has. they are exercising it now. >> the two things to counter what you are saying, i know you mean it in good faith. daca, affordable care act, and the republicans like to go to the doctor and dentist. look at the then governor of kentucky when he said i'm going to get rid of what he called connect, and people figured out that was obama care, and he tried to get rid of it, it was gone in a heart beat. the last thing i will ask you is about the democrats. there is an issue that people have to vote their state. if you go through the eight democrats who voted against the 15 minimum wage. which is hugely popular. i get you have the delaware senators voting against it. both new hampshire senators -- together, and manchin, they have very republican states. mark kelly, the very popular astronaut in arizona voted the other way. why didn't he shoet the way she did. i feel there is a thing in democrats that went thome be on the other side. i don't know what that is about. do you this? >> no, i think that is one of great get questions -- yeah, 2014, that is still a tweet up. wage the minimum wage. that was six, seven years ago. i think it's going to be one of the definger questions in politics. is it ideology, is it left and right as you mentioned. have the people just come to believe the kind of savvy centrist world view, to stick to my view rather than vote in the interest of my constituents, and i think it's not just people in the state, but across the country. our politics are broken when 70% of the public support a bill and not a single republican in the house or is not support it. that is broken democracy. >> i will tell you two things quickly. manchin, saying to their party, if you do x, y, z, i will vote for the bill. the problem is they will extract changes and amendments and making the bill weaker and still not vote for the bill. there is a problem. if people are not -- bipartisanship, it's probably the media. thank you very much. kafr lose, great to talk to you. my home my from the m-i-a. up next on the reid out, the former president said she hired only the best people. and one of the best people was just charged with beating a police officer in the january 6th maga wouldn't exist without white people. and white people are done being bullied. >> okay, then. and yet, not a peep of criticism from any of his fellow republican politicians. ha! and why that makes paul >> you know, if their conduct is limited to organizing a rally, that is probably first amendment speech. the question is whether there is evidence that goes behind that. that says any members of congress were involved in aiding and abetting rioters, helping them find locations inside the capitol. encouraging them to move past police line. as in all cases, it comes down to details. that is why it's so important we have investigations on a number of fronts so we with get to the truth. >> and what concerns you the most? as you look at this, elizabeth, when you put all the pieces together -- we can't put it together because we have a pieces. but you have the pentagon seeming really reticent, and the secretary of army reticent to respond. you have law enforcement hobbled. the national gord hobbled and you have the brother of michael flynn, also a general, on a call in which they seem to limit the response, and his brother is one of the people saying, no, you should use marshal law to stay in power. these pieces to me are really terrifying and we came really, really close to what amounts pass a coup. is that too hysterical to react that way? >> i don't think it is, joy. i think it's -- i realize in a court of law, the prosecution has to prove that case. that needs to happen but when you have a government employee, when you take that oath, the burden is on you to explain your actions to the american people and explain why you made the decisions that you did, and we really haven't heard from the individuals you mentioned, the second of defense. michael flynn's brother, to fully understand their side of the story. from what we know right now there are really two answers. either you had a situation of a number of new appointees that had come in the department of defense that were not equip to do their job, and transitions take time. even if they had not, perhaps they didn't know enough about how the department worked, and thus, they made some really bad judgment calls. i think that is being generous. but until we have all the facts that is a plausible scenario. the other scenario, that this was intentional. there was a scenario they were getting it get out of hand because they thought the president wanted thome do that or they were going for the marshal law declaration. it's not clear to me which it is. we need to hear from the people of the department of defense that either made the bad judgment call or were participating in something. >> we need a commission with subpoena power. >> can i just add -- >> sure. >> the real question here is what did they hope to game by delaying?
