And its something were not too accustomed to a young. Good morning. There stephanie. Good morning, everybody. And as we speak right now is a pretty potent storm category. Number 4. Now, this is not unheard of or unprecedented. Its happened before we actually had that happened in 1939. And just a year or so ago, we had the same situation happened as well. By the time it gets here will be a Tropical Storm. But as you can see, a very strong one category for one of the bigger issues with this, probably for people in socal. This will be very reminiscent of a bad winter storm dropping south. So the heavy rains, theyre going to have the winds going on and what youre seeing here is the eye where the center of the storm is. Most of the weather tends to be off towards the east. But the center of the storm is marching through baja, california will enter california inland. That didnt happen in 1939. Actually came in from the pacific. Thats rare to actually come in directly from the ocean. But that also happened about a year ago or so. So as you can see by this point, its becoming a Tropical Storm. So at that point, again, the heavy rains and the winds again, reminiscent of like a winter type like storm port of a los angeles. That stuff like that that you dont normally think about. This is going to be a rough weekend for those folks. All right. By 11 00pm on sunday. Heres the progress. There you have the eye. Monday is going to be a little dicey are for you. So meanwhile, for the bay area where just west enough that perhaps most of the weather will bypass us and look at quick it moves that. But even though you to see a tropical low at that point, thats still all that moisture. The atmosphere has told george the situation is its taking it away from us. So its not going to be lingering in our atmosphere that could spark off Severe Weather for a series of days. Heres futurecast for marine layer goes away. There are some of the deeper moisture from the south getting up the Central Valley. So as early as this afternoon, folks down there might get a couple of scattered Thunder Showers due to this tropical system. Were being sprayed a little bit on sunday store. Putting that in our forecast by sunday night. The mountains very involved. This is quickly moving. And as you can see, it exits stage just turning into monday will still keep maybe a little sprinkles. Do for us into monday. A little bit as a possibility. Cant rule out any impact until we get to around tuesday or so. But the big days to look for basically sunday afternoon through monday for that possibility of some Thunder Showers. Live shot of the east bay shoreline. We have that marine layer fog in place. Storm tracker 4. Again, its just the marine layer hanging around forecast today calls for 70 San Francisco. 75 oakland, san jose coming in at 85. Well have a closer inspection of those numbers. Checking out your 4 zone forecast. But, stephanie, we want to hit the hurricane here pretty hard category 4. Thats pretty potent. But again, by the time it gets up to california, it will be a Tropical Storm is going to a lot of punch. Check the water of serve temperatures down around san diego. Theyre about 70 71. Typical for this time of year. But for tropical systems, they need him. But 80 or 80 something and whatever to support them. So it just cant be supporting this kind of weather. Ok, got it. So some good news for us to get people in Southern California. Better make sure that all buttoned up and prepared in the event for the bay areas going to be very, very, very modest. Its really the mountains. And then Southern California, those are going to be a and this is good, too, because the Colorado River valley needs this. Yeah. Lake mead youre getting a drink. Haha. Southern california officials are urging people to get ready now before that massive storm hits. John fenoglio has the latest. Get ready. Southern california. This is potentially an unprecedented extreme weather event for los angeles, Southern California and the rest of the west coast. Hurricane hilary is heading our way and officials are warning residents to prepare now for potentially dangerous weather conditions sunday and monday. Region is expected to receive anywhere from 2 to 4 inches of rain totaling across la county with up to 7 inches possible in the San Gabriel Mountains and the foothills. That means possible flash flooding, mudslides, power outages, even the possibility of isolated tornadoes. A flood watch will be in effect over the weekend with the threat of flooding in some areas as early as saturday. Hillary is expected to weaken to a Tropical Storm by the time it reaches sow cow. However, Emergency Management Officials Say it could still pack a powerful punch with sustained winds of 40 to 60 miles per hour. Theres a significant threat. La city and county officials warning residents to be ready to hunker down, saying the window to prepare is quickly closing. I want to keep hitting home the point of how important it is to prepare, especially we know that this is coming. That means having enough supplies for several days without power, including packaged foods, at least 3 gallons of water per person. Extra medications, a hand crank no radio flashlights and batteries, phone chargers, copies of Important Documents and a first aid kit just to name a few. Forecasters say some areas could experience a years worth of rain in just 2 days making recent burn scar susceptible to debris flows, places like Rolling Hills estates where hillsides failed and destroyed at least a dozen homes last month are especially vulnerable. Lee county sheriff robert luna says his agency is hoping for the best while preparing for a worstcase scenario. We do urge residents to please stay informed through the county website news and social media. Please prepare. Please take this seriously. We are not use hurricane preparation, but its another example of climate change. So we have to be prepared for climate events that were not used to stay safe. Stay off the streets in los angeles. John fenoglio kron. 4 news. Preparation really is so key, especially given what we know how massive this storm is going to be. And dave, youve been tracking this for quite some time now. I mean, should we expect a lot of impact here in the bay area . Well, for the bay area, no, not so much of the interesting thing about these things are as when its over water like that. Its a very stable and to now it hasnt made landfall yet, although its impact is already being felt in Southern California in terms of rain and Thunder Showers. Just give you a quick idea where we stand right now. Max winds are one. 25, the new report puts into category 3 swat dropped a little bit, but its still fairly intense. But as you heard earlier, its going to become a Tropical Storm when its in Southern California. Thats expected probably by tomorrow. Now, even though its a Tropical Storm, what you have is over land becomes unstable and you have all that moisture to deal with. So its basically like monsoon stuff happening all at once. That does mean localized flooding. As you heard about the be locally heavy rain winds, you can get winds well beyond hurricane strength, even though its just a Tropical Storm. I say just in quotation marks. Lets watch this as it makes its pathway forward. As you also heard here, this is Tropical Storm warnings for Southern California. Boyce folks, this San Diego Weather Service and one Tropical Storm warning. Never do that here. You know. So first time they probably had issue that for a while actually comes the hurricane center. But least a week broadcast it. Heres about where it is just before it gets into Southern California, the category one but expected to become a Tropical Storm by the time it gets over to the u. S. Side, theres the klopp of where you see the heavy rainfall going on for the most part say Central Valley points to the south. Those Higher Elevations got to watch out. If youre on the great find, for example, youre going up to 5,000 feet of elevation. All that means is all that surface moisture gets pushed up and you get or graphic lifting or just up sloping and you get more rain coming out. Its the same thing happens in the mountains on the monsoon. So just up everything that you hear about when you see Something Like this, its a Tropical Storm by this point. Looks like its around the vegas area with rains following it. The impact for the bay very, very modest. Also because of quick movements going to help everybody out to get that moisture out of here. Therefore, its not going to be around during daytime heating to spark off locally Severe Weather. Lets go back to future cast for take care of the marine layer this afternoon. Were looking good. Theres the moisture just starting to make its way up through the mountains. You can see around tahoe, yosemite, we go to tonight. We might have a stray shower even by tomorrow morning, clearing out its wake. We still have the tropical moisture towards the east. Again, we clear out for the afternoon and then as we go into monday, again, with all this moisture spewing around, it may come back to us and might see a little stray shower perhaps overnight into monday before things start to clear on tuesday, theres a look at your high temperatures. 75 oakland, 85. Meanwhile for san to be back a little bit. Check out the 4 zone forecast. Get more into the weeds and what we can expect for today. But the big issue again, stephanie, is a good thing is this thing is moving quickly. It has heavy rains that are associated with it. So i would say people there plan on maybe like all your fire preparation, stuff. All the stuff you do see in the winter type months when you see bad storm come barreling down there with lots of winds and lots of rain just program, all of that going forward, even though its tropical in nature and environment is not free suitable. So it becomes very unstable throws a lot of moisture around it. So a lot of people are going to share in some of this as we go for, like places like nevada, they see a tropical system never, you right idea. Very interesting. Thank you so much, dave. You that. All right. What weve got going on to the Southern California kron. 4 morning news continues. All right. Welc back. Taking a live look now at conditions in walnut creek. Looking nice and sunny out there and quite a bit of traffic at 9. 13 this saturday morning. Lets check in now with day for more on what we need to know before we step outdoors. A good morning stephanie. Good morning, everybody. Were also watching hurricane hilary, although its impact on us is going to be very, very modest. Heres the latest stats that we have on it going on. Max winds are one. 25. Thats the near the center of circulation. By the way. And theres your pressure. Its fairly low to even for an atlantic hurricane. So there we have the progress of lets move this forward. All these yellows or oranges, rather, you see that orange stuff. That means Tropical Storm warning. You dont see the pain in socal at all. That means a county like Riverside County has a Tropical Storm warning going on. Never thought ever say that in my life. But anyway, its inland and they didnt used to issue what those for inland counties. All right. Heres the Rain Coverage that were looking at. This is now tomorrow. Were looking at still category one. It says across the border, heavy rains that will be focused off towards the east as well because thats where most of the moisture is going to be. Lets go forward with this thing here now. Were at sunday that sunday at 05 00pm up here. This starts to get late on sunday early on monday. Again, most of the rain well be in our mountains. From a great, great fine. And then also up to around tahoe as well. Well get some of this activity again. Were talking tomorrow and tomorrow night through nevada, the impact for the bay area. Very modest. We might get a few showers tomorrow morning. Well clear out in the afternoon and potentially in the back side of this in the monday might have some scattered showers as well. Scattered showers as well. Here is a northern nevada and going to be up to oregon. Probably before we get tuesday. So it shows you this things moving quickly taking most of the moisture with it. Lets get closer to home here. Marine layer is gone. Theres the arrival of hillary. Couple little stray showers late tonight might have something tomorrow morning to note couple scattered showers. Theres your deeper moisture continues to move. And it looks like theres some training action going on that used to cause flash flooding. And we might even have some locally Severe Weather associated with that. And then as you can see by monday, predawn, this system is almost entirely exit, california. Today were talking 70 San Francisco. 85 for san jose. 75 for oakland kind of narrowing things down a little bit for us today. Its sunny, hot, inland 90s going on, typical kind of program tomorrow might have an early shower. Thunder shower question. Mark. Okay. After we get past the Morning Hours, we open up nicely for the day and then tomorrow night clouds come back again. We might have that little scattered shower for monday, but most of the balance of the week, mostly sunny and hot by the middle of next week. Weve got middle 90s in the east bay 80s. Meanwhile, up to the north, its not quite cook. And if you will, is just on the warm side, were just kind of warm here, stephanie, youre cooking. All right, dave. Yes, were definitely cooking something delicious here. Now you have likely seen Green Goddess dressing on the shelves at your local grocery store. But did you know the original recipe was created right here in San Francisco at the palace hotel . Well, this coming wednesday, the hotel is celebrating the one 100th birthday of the dressing with Green Goddess dae jung. Joining us live now is executive chef at the palace. So tell thom u. S. Roads. Good morning to you. Good morning. Thank you for inviting me. Of course. Were so happy to have you to show off Green Goddess dressing. So first of all, tell us a bit about the history of this dressing. Its very special. Well, and there are 3 people, a cast of characters that we need to really think for this dressing. One of is fully parlous archer. And then george, excuse me, george, our list, William Archer and flee pro William Archer was the actual person who actually invented the play green very interesting. So george, our list was one of the lead actors in the role and then flee pro mayor. He was actually the executive chef 100 years ago at the palace hotel, which very unique. He was the that was moments we had a they had a gala. Gala event out of Household Hotel commemorate the green got his george are less went to fully and asked him. Is there something that you can make to present on the menu . So that we can, you know, can remember the green got his plate right turned george and said george, hey, no problem. Weve got staying. He takes goes back to lab, lab or tory, aka the kitchen and started working on the Green Goddess recipe back then back then it essentially mannys bays and sour cream. Garlic lemon juice. Some anchovies and a little bit herbs and 100 years kind of like, you know, change is the recipe. So i kind all, yes, holes with that being said, made it a little bit lighter. We took out the man is in the sour cream. We need a little more so its lighter. Its more or b by adding paragon into it. And thats basically what weve been for today. We still kept the it sounds like that was a pretty popular. Yeah. Part of the whole now we know that the tell you guys are celebrating this coming wednesday with the special event. Yes, special menu. Yeah. So walk us through what people can expect as well. So were having a gala event of her own and thats going to be on wednesday, a and we are going to celebrate the proclamation from london breed that the 23rd is going to be green. Got to stay. So that youre goddess day. All right. And so this is something that people can expect when they stop by. Absolutely. And so show us show us what they what they expect to see. So essentially, have all the ingredients for the the revised version of the pals and of the palace crab salad in the Green Goddess dressing. Essentially we take and putting our blender. All right. Our herbs, chives, you make it all from scratch. Absolutely. Yeah. Parsley will putin signed and 10, a little more bases as we have tara gonna put inside as well. Now. Its very fragrant. Yes, it is. In addition that will use a little bit of spinach plants that gives it that really bright, vibrant, you know, avocado green garlic. Onions. And where do you source all of your ingredients we use vendors sourced locally within 50 miles of San Francisco, local farmer. Yes. And then the world famous there they a little bit of acid from a limb and a little bit vinegar as and thats basically it. So what well do next is turn on the blender and puree all these ingredients and slowly, most of fy in our all of oil. Wow. Okay. Then we season as we need and, you know, basically turn on view. And then to the magic of tv boom, we it how long does it take for you to produce enough Green Goddess dressing, too. Feed all customers who come we we make it in 5 gallon increments. 5 as well. Sometimes will make 10 and you 2 or 3 batches at a time. So and we go through that we use them for other things. We use them for a sandwich spread, which is really tasty. Dressing on his hands on a sandwich. With chicken or or salmon or Something Like that. In addition to that, we also use it for crude its a Great Community dipped interest day. Its just so incredible to me how Green Goddess dressing it has its roots in San Francisco. Its just so need that that history is rooted here in the bay area. Yeah, absolutely. Its its its an honor to be able to. To carry on the tradition. I tell you what, well do a little sample of what its going to look like. What a show us youd like to have. You generally. Thats a prepared. Okay. So with our dressing itself, were going to playing chef here take a little bit of the dressing. Put it in the middle of the plate and kind of artistically spread it around the plate. So we get some pretty nurse. Yeah, on there, its not too go. How do you generally decide what the designs are going to look like to every time i eat at a nice restaurant an establishment like yours, for so impressed it looks like part play. Sometimes sometimes it comes from areas of the of just some time in social media, sometimes from sometimes i look at the skin of bark of a tree. And i think how can i do that on a desert or how can i do that . On on bread or Something Like, yeah, its a design. It comes from everywhere looking out you know, spacey look at the moon in the in the surface of the moon. Okay. So, you know, formula really knows. Just where where in seattle so we the version that were serving at the hotel for the palace grounds is kind of a deconstructed version were not tossing it with dressing cause. The dressing is already on the bottom of the plate. Rangers addressing on the bottom. We put our salad on a then we take our condiments that were putting on to the plate as well. We introduce cucumber for a little bit of texture, gives a little crunch. Yes, freshness. And we and our crab. Fresh dungeness crab meat that we put on a as so and this is or standard the palace hotel. And if people want a vegetarian option, they can probably absolutely absolutely. And if someone is allergic to to crustaceans, then we have chicken and also salmon as well. Just going to move this driver so people can see your hand. You handiwork. Okay. We also put some tiny vegetables on here to give it some a little bit of pop. A little bit of adorable. And you have a little beat. May be care. It. So it gives it you know some mistakes. Yeah, and some colors. Are some crunch . Yeah. Little garnish with our. Watermelon and then finally. Some felt panel confetti. And thatll come fed. There you thats fun, breathing circus of ingredients. There. And thats essentially our salad. Very simple. Very. Its pretty easy to make. And the dressing pretty easy to make sounds pretty easy to assemble. And it tastes pretty good. All right. Thank you so much for showing us this beautiful work of a plate. Executive chef Thomas Rhodes with the palace hotel. Thank you for joining us. Thank you so much. All right. Well be right back. Eveverery y bubusisines dedeseservrveses a a g gre. Hawaii is a popular Tourist Destination for bay area. Travelers. And while some may be reconsidering their plan, trips, hawaiis governor shared this message about vacationing on the islands. We humbly ask that people please not travel to the area affected by the disaster in west maui until further notice. However. All other areas of maui and the rest of hawaii are safe and open to visitors. And we continue to welcome and encourage travel to our beautiful state. Which will support the local economy and help speed the recovery of those who have already suffered so much. Again, while the governor is encouraging travel to the islands, he is emphasizing people should not plan a trip to west maui as Recovery Efforts continue there. Joining us live now to discuss is our travel enthusiasts to dana redd men. Good morning to you, dan, good morning. You know, this is a scenario we know all too well in the bay area. Weve had multiple wildfires in recent years that have changed our landscapes as well. Nonessential travel to map to west maui is strongly discouraged right we cant say that enough strongly discouraged to west valley. If you have enough cap Upcoming Trip planned to spots near line at lake on pauline pili couple lua reschedule it for another time. Resources are being dedicated to Recovery Efforts. Hotels owners of Vacation Rentals are being encouraged to help displaced residents. Many hotels in west maui have stopped taking reservations. There will come a time where economy visitors again, that will be something that is needed. But west maui is not there yet. If you have plans to visit other parts of maui, they are open. They are safe spots like he wild louis, if you have any uncertainty and its understandable if you would have uncertainty. Weve all seen weve all seen the footage reach out to the hotel that you booked at that you booked with reached out to to the Tour Operator that you booked with. Ask them. How its best to proceed there. Theyre going to guide you accordingly. Theyre going to explain the reasoning behind it. Striking an economic balance here in regards to tourism is absolutely important. Its also incredibly, incredibly important to understand the travel is still welcome on the other Hawaiian Islands. The islands of hawaii of kauai, elan i oahu molokai. So if you postpone maui, maybe this is a great opportunity to visit an island. Thats new to you. You know, on an island like hawaii. Okay. Yeah. And you were just there about a month about a month ago. Every Hawaiian Island is special for its own reason. Maybe youve gone to certain places before, but this is a great opportunity to try something new. What sets apart the island of hawaii to me is the unique wildlife experiences that you can have their one of my favorite experiences swimming with manta rays. Reef man says. Theyre huge. Thats just the best way to put it. They can have a wingspan of 12 to 14 feet. They have. They are just amazing. Amazing. They have no barbs. They have no stingers. They eat plankton they are not a threat to people. But yes, when you see one, it will take your breath away. It will absolutely take your breath away. Advocates offers moonlight snorkeling tours right from the beach. Theres no boat involved. Staff are absolutely passionate about protecting manta rays, educatiig visitors. Its kind becoming a wildlife advocate is what you walk away from. And its a lesson that will stay with you long after you get home. I if you look at the footage, theyre coming really close scooping up that plant theyre not thinking about you. Theyre thinking about dinner is essentially what it comes down to. Im seeing hawaiian green sea to sea turtles is also on many travelers. Wish list all what a cutie right there. There oodles of tours that you can book. But the bottom line is you never know when youre going to see one. I met this turtle. I jumped in the water. Early one morning for a quick swim behind the fairmont orchid. He just happened to be there hanging and its absolutely exciting to watch them. Do simple things like yeah, but it is extremely important to be respectful to give them space. Hawaiian green sea turtles are endangered species. You can forget about that easily. If you see them multiple times on vacation. But it is important to understand, you know, harassing them, touching them is against federal law. Just hang back and she in with you. Enjoy the moment will be bragging about it to your friends. If youre lucky enough to have a camera, youll be showing them all sorts of pictures as well. Another unique thing on hawaii island. Its also home to a really unique one of a kind farm that raises see horses. So cool you are says and sea dragons or home aquariums want aquariums. Now the idea here is preventing endangered seahorses from being taken from the wild on a tour at ocean writer, sea horse farm visitors, baby horses, pregnant males. You even get an opportunity toward the end to let a curious sea calm and wrap itself around your fingers. Again. Respectful tourism opportunities that you will take home lessons about conservation, that you will take home. And if you are a wild life lover, he will be extremely happy about the vacation choice you have made absolutely. And the key word here is respect up slightly as well. Absolutely. Respect for the wildlife. The local culture. Absolutely. Its interesting, too and we we you and i were talking a little bit earlier, but during the commercial break, but the important still that tourism has on the locally salute. Lee, why its so important to the recovery and folks in the bay area can understand that folks in wine country, in particular, we saw this years ago when we had when we had the wildfires, certain things have to stop west maui will be closed for some time and hell let us know when its ok to come back. Other sections of the island are open. People need jobs. They need the economy to keep going. Tourism is an important part of the economy. Important reminder from our dana redmond this morning. Our travel expert, thank you for joining us. Thank you. All right. Well, kron fours Parent Company nexstar is partnering with the red cross to help people affected by the hawaii wildfires.
