shiver. midwest takes a polar plunge while the northeast braces for-- what else-- more snow. meet the paul o'sullivans, sharing music and the same name. >> i couldn't imagine my life without these guys. >> diaz: and later, covid or not, reasons to cheer this super bowl sunday. >> going to the super bowl, super bowl! this is the "cbs weekend news" from chicago. here's adriana diaz. >> diaz: good evening. in normal times, the super bowl is one of the country's great social occasions, as americans gather to take in the festivities on the field and off. but in the era of covid, there is tremendous risk. health experts warn that watch parties could jeopardize the fragile gains we've made since the worst wave of the pandemic. infections fell again this week in 42 states but deaths remain stubbornly high-- total cases near 27 million, the u.s. death toll now topping 461,000. to stay safe, officials recommend sticking with those in your household to watch tomorrow's game. cbs' jamie yuccas is in tampa with all of the covid adjustments being made so the game can go on. jamie, good evening. how's it going down there? >> reporter: the parties are in full swing in downtown tampa tonight. the n.f.l. experiences are all full. some of the guests there are the 7500 vaccinated healthcare workers who will be celebrated at tomorrow's game. the kansas city chiefs arrived in tampa just one day before the big game. the late arrival is just one change due to the pandemic. >> hand sanitizer. >> reporter: the n.f.l.'s peter o'reilly says the league has partnered with state and local health officials, along with the c.d.c., to keep sunday's 22,000 super bowl spectators healthy. >> we feel very confident our protocols. and we've got the learnings from moreere's been no cluster or spread coming out of any of those games. >> reporter: masks will be mandatory, and fans will be distanced in the stands. >> chiefs! ( laughing ) >> reporter: not a problem for these two hall of fame superfans. >> we love each other. >> we do >> but on sunday during the game you better sit far away from me, girl. >> reporter: florida has been hit hard by covid, with more than 1.7 million infections since the start of the pandemic. tampa's mayor jane castor issued a mask mandate, including at events held outside. people can face a $500 fine if they don't wear one. i gotta ask you, i've walked around here a little bit. there are a lot of people not wearing masks. how are you going to enforce it, especially outside? >> most people aren't used to wearing them outdoors, but our community will adhere. and then we expect that the visitors will as well. people arrive at the airport, the first thing they're going to hear is, "you need your sunscreen, your sunglasses and your mask." >> reporter: the stadium will host 7500 vaccinated healthcare workers, but one player, chief's offensive lineman laurent duvernay-tardif won't be on the field. a doctor, he opted out of the covid season, choosing instead to work in a long-term care facility in molecular. >> i follow my conviction. like i said no to that in order to promote health. and if you've got to be able to lead by example and make the tough call. >> reporter: fans will receive these black kn95 masks at the stadium tomorrow while healthcare workers will get a special white one. the game and the halftime show with the weeknd are meant to be a balance about respecting the cost of the pandemic while also creating some joy. adriana. >> diaz: jamie, thanks. the super bowl isn't the only thing happening sunday. many americans will also attend church. cbs' danya bacchus is in los angeles with the changes coming soon to services in california. danya, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. restrictions here on worship in california have fluctuated since march. soon, services can resume inside with limits on attendance and size. with the nation still in the grips of a pandemic, a win for religious groups in california: the united states supreme court last night ruled 6-3 to block governor newsom's ban on indoor services. pastor arthur hodge's church was part of the lawsuits. >> we're just ecstatic that we can legally, without threat or pressure, fine or arrest, we can go back to church. >> reporter: this as the rush to vaccinate continues with variant cases growing, threatening progress. to address the ongoing challenges of vaccine supply and who receives it, mega sites continue to open across the country. the n.f.l. now making the rest of its 30 stadiums available. in california, a site is dedicated to vaccinating those with limited access. >> and i just feel like i'm more protected if i take a vaccine, and i'm-- i'm not going to put anybody else at risk. >> reporter: new york's yankee stadium now a vaccination mega site for one of the city's hardest hit areas. >> the bronx has been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. and, so we have to go where the need is. >> reporter: the impact of covid-19 still devastating families everywhere, including paul hansen in utah, who lost his parent, oniel and patricia to the virus less than a day apart. >> i never dreamed when i first heard the word "covid" that it would cut so deeply into the lives of our family. >> reporter: they were just a few months away from their 72nd anniversary. >> it's bittersweet. it's exactly how mom and dad would have wanted to go. and they had been together their whole life. >> reporter: as restrictions here on indoor services are eased, mask mandates and social distancing requirements will also be lifted on sunday. we'll see how this all plays out in the weeks ahead. adriana. >> diaz: danya bacchus in los angeles, thank you. from covid relief to his predecessor to his son hunter. president biden had a lot to say to "cbs evening news" anchor norah o'donnell. they spoke in an exclusive interview airing ahead of the super bowl tomorrow. cbs' christina ruffini has a preview. >> reporter: president biden is spending his first weekend away from the white house at his home in delaware, where he had a brief checkup for a past foot injury and continued the march forward to get support for his covid relief plan. the plan includes funding for vaccination programs, extended unemployment benefits, and $1,400 stimulus payments to most americans. but republicans are pushing back, saying it's too expensive. >> o'donnell: you've said you're not compromising on the $1,400 checks. >> no. >> you made that promise. you're sticking to it. the big question is who gets the check. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview with cbs news, president biden said he would be willing to compromise who qualifies for those payments. >> i'm prepared to negotiate on that. but here's the deal: middle class folks need help. >> reporter: president biden also told cbs he does not believe former president trump should still be receiving intelligence briefings, the ones traditionally offered to past presidents. >> o'donnell: what's your worst fear if he continues to get these intelligence briefings? >> i'd rather not speculate out loud. i just think there's no need for him to have the intelligence briefing. what value is giving him an intelligence briefing? what impact does it have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something. >> reporter: and new tonight, president biden also discussed his son hunter. >> you know i'll bet there's not a family you know that doesn't have somebody in the family that had a drug problem or an alcohol problem. >> reporter: hunter addresses those problems in a new memoir. >> but the honesty with which he stepped forward and talked about the problem and the hope that-- it gave me hope reading it. i mean, it was like, my boy's back. you know what i mean? i'm-- i work all the time. >> diaz: the mother of five is trying to hang on to her landmark los angeles diner dupar's, after laying off 85 employees, most of them women, and closing their second location. >> we had sales of only $4.95 a day, a slice of pie. someone would come by just for a slice of pie. it was very sad that, you know, we had to let go of all those long-term staff. it wasn't something that i wanted to do. >> diaz: women held a majority of service jobs lost in the pandemic. and due to the demands of schooling, four times as many women left the workforce this fall as men. in december alone, 156,000 jobs were lost, all of them from women. annie warshaw is a consultant in career equity. >> but it doesn't matter if your productivity is high if people feel like they're doing a bad job. so giving parents, specifically moms, the support so that they understand that my work cares, can have really big impacts ultimately keeping moms from drops out. >> diaz: some people are calling this recession a "she-session." >> absolutely. we're having to make choices that none of us have ever even bargained with: do you continue to work or do you focus on your children?
