>> let's get right to cbs reporter weijia jang who is live on capitol hill. this comes after more than half of franken's own party in the senate said enough is enough. >> reporter: kenny, there was an avalanche of calls for him to resign after more women came forward. during the speech today he didn't admit to any allegations and i said he knows in his heart he hasn't done anything as a senator to dishonor the institution. senator al franken announced his resignation from the senate floor where he has served since2008. >> even on the worst day of my political life, is i feel like it's all been worth it. >> reporter: multiple women have come forward accusing senator franken of sexual misconduct. radio news anchor leann tweeden claimed franken forcibly kissed her and placed his hands over her chest during a 2006 tour of the uso. he apologize and said he would take part in the investigation against him. >> reporter: some of the allegations against me are not true. others i remember very differently. >> reporter: wednesday 35 of his democratic colleagues announced they had seen enough and called for franken to resign. >> it was difficult for each of us to come to this point. >> reporter: many of franken's colleagues says the issue of sexual harassment extends well beyond the halls of congress and they hope this case can spark a cultural change in america. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: but they added, lawmakers should be held to a higher standard. [ indiscernible ] >> we need to raise the bar to a higher standard. >> reporter: franken says despite leaving office, he will continue to speak out on issues he says are important. during his remarks, franken also took a shot at president trump saying it is ironic that the president remains in the oval office even though there are sexual allegations against him and franken also pointed out the republican party continues to support senate candidate roy moore, who also faces allegations. >> so his departure leaves a senate seat open. who will fit it in minnesota? >> reporter: there are already some names being floated out there of democratic leaders from that state. and it is the democratic senator who will ultimately make the call and a front- runner now is his lieutenant governor tina smith, but so far, nothing is official. whoever it is will have the seat until there is a special election next year. >> thank you. breaking news now in new mexico. a school shooting has left three people dead. this happened in aztec near the four corners region and nav and navajo nation. it's not confirmed if the gunman was a student. in the bay area an elderly man is dead and wife in the hospital victims of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning in bernal heights neighborhood of san francisco. jackie ward shows us the detectors had just been installe. >> reporter: carbon monoxide detectors were installed in this homeless than two months ago but it wasn't enough to save a man's life. after 4 a.m. a carbon monoxide detector sounded off alerting the people who live here at 301 moultrie that they there were unsafe levels of carbon monoxide in their home. >> we looked at the back and saw that the instructions are to call 911 so we did. >> reporter: theresa lives in the second floor apartment and has for nine years as well as the couple below her. >> we're sitting around taking care of each other praying for those two. nicest people. did their little errands, cared for each other. >> reporter: when the fire department arrived on scenes and forced inside the lower unit, they found a woman unconscious by the door. first responders and responders did cpr on the husband before pronouncing him dead. the woman is in the hospital at st. francis memorial. neighbors in the tight-knit community are now making sure their co and smoke detectors are working properly something that should be tested once a month. >> it's sad. you know? it's a shame. i'll have to be more careful. >> reporter: this case is still under investigation but preliminary findings lead pg&e to believe this was caused by incomplete combustion of the water heater, to prevent the right amount of gas or oxygen from getting into the heater and escaping. if you are unsure of the safety of any of your appliances in your home, pg&e has free inspections. just call them at their toll- free number. jackie ward, kpix 5. the fire department says that every home in san francisco is required to have carbon monoxide detectors. new at noon, four people displaced after a one-alarm fire broke out in san francisco this morning. firefighters say that the blaze affected two homes on 31st avenue. smoke was seen billowing in the sunset district. a closer look you can see the front windows shattered on the home on the ride with glass across the driveway. he cause is under investigation. oakland city workers are on strike for a third day. kpix 5's jessica flores is at city hall where another tense closed door contract negotiation is about to begin. >> reporter: the strike is taking a toll on the city. just look at this trash piling up. these workers say they want to go back to work but say that the city's offer is unfair. [ chanting ] >> reporter: they are chanting to city hall where wage negotiations between the city and the union are at a standstill and they are all frustrated. >> they are frustrated. we shouldn't go out here. >> i continue to be extremely disappointed that the unions have chosen to strike when we have not reached impasse. that is very unusual. it is an unfair labor practice. >> reporter: for a two-year contract, the unions want an 8% raise. the city so far says it can only afford to guarantee a 4% raise with up to 2% more tied to revenue growth. the union says the workers are getting priced out of their own city. >> what we're really asking the city to do is help us to break even. we just want to be able to afford to live in a city that we love and want to serve. >> reporter: the city council met yesterday to try to end the strike. they couldn't reach a deal. the city council again will have a closed-door session at 1 p.m. today inside city hall. in oakland, jessica flores, kpix 5. >> the city's projections show meeting the union's demands could lead to layoffs and a $20 million deficit. but the union says the city is underprojecting revenue. firefighters are now struggling for a fourth day to get a hand on the wildfires raging in southern california. the number of evacuations are still in effect thousands of them. the thomas fire is the largest, but the skirball, creek and rye fires to the south and west are threatening thousands of homes. here are the latest numbers. more than 100,000 acres burned with minimal containment. at least 200 structures are destroyed. and more than 260 public and charter schools in the area are closed for the rest of the week. reporter kenneth craig joins us now with an update from the fire lines. kenneth. >> reporter: anne and kenny, the devastation out here is truly astonishing. it's even hard to believe that you're seeing it firsthand, especially in neighborhoods like this one where it's safe to say about half the homes are no longer standing. so many people left their homes really with just the clothes on their backs and when they return, they will find nothing left. firefighters faced a wall of flames early this morning at the thomas fire in ventura county. it is the largest of four wildfires that have been devouring homes and is now threatening the city of ojai. forecasters warned winds could hit 80 miles an hour today. but los angeles officials say so far, conditions are better than anticipated. >> the expected high winds from last night were calmer than we had some projections of. >> reporter: with the fire spreading quickly authorities are issuing new evacuation orders every day. the fires have forced more than 200,000 people from their homes. some communities like this one in ventura, some residents are returning to find their home leveled and the home next door untouched. at least 200 homes have burned to the ground. laura sanders has been searching for cherished belongings in the rubble of her shadow hills home. >> i found a whole bunch of books, looked like books, and as soon as you touch it, it disintegrated records the fires are disrupting the lives of thousands of people in los angeles. some highways are closed and with smoke drifting for miles, dozens of schools are shut down for the rest of the week as crews fight hard to get the massive blazes under control. the winds have picked up here today. but nowhere near the 70-mile-an- hour winds officials were expecting and that is a good thing. about 5,000 firefighters are fighting these flames. >> thank you. what happened after an officer approached a four- legged traffic victim?
