New this morning, a new close call for some san jose homeowners overnight after a fire swept through their backyard. You can see it was a dramatic scene. Today in the bay Sharon Katsuda is live for us in japantown with what happened. Sharon . Reporter well, kris and marcus, the fire broke out just down the block here on 12th street. Firefighters say the blaze started on the 600 block of 12th street. Trash caused the fire to quickly spread to other neighbors back yards. The guy was banging on the door trying to get the older people out of their house and they went in the back and started unraveling the water hose in the backyard right here, and they started pulling it through and we it was like inferno, like churning, spinning, and just went in the back and started helping. Reporter we just saw red cross out on scene. They couldnt give details how many neighbors needed help overnight. So far, weve heard no injuries in this fire. New this morning, this is what remains after a fire threatened homes in another san jose neighborhood, in the their of marchant drive and fleming avenue last night in the citys feast foothills. It appears all that burned was vegetation. No structures were damaged but it was pretty close. New this morning, were tracking whats described as one of the strongest hurricanes ever in the atlantic. This we want to show you a live picture of the bahamas right now, where dorian made landfall there as a monster category 5 hurricane. Those winds reaching 165 Miles Per Hour, and it is expected to keep pounding the area through most of the day, thats because that storm is stalled out, moving only about 1 mile per hour. Residents there will have to contend with those winds for at least 24 hours, and right now, dorian is dangling off the florida coast, and is expected to eventually turn north. That means that florida may avoid a direct hit. Right now, there are no deaths being attributed in the bahamas because of dorian but as today in the bays thom gen ken reports t has shredded homes and left some islands completely without power. A strange sight of events unfolding on the grounds of Oakland International airport and this morning investigators are trying to find out more about the suspect in this. Police say it started yesterday when an Alameda County sheriffs deputy tried to pull over a driver. The driver took off onto an airport access road and rammed a security gate at more than 50 miles an hour. Shortly after driving onto the tarmac, the man then ran toward the water. Crews spent hours scouring the area, but they believe he may have drowned. Deputies are still looking to determine a motive. Theres always just a Mental Health factor, was this just one person acting out, and i think we need to learn who this person is before we can even begin to make a determination. Not seeing necessarily a nexus to domestic terror or International Terror at this point. It really appears to be some type of lone individual acting very bizarrely. There was very little impact at the airport on this busy travel weekend and no one else was hurt. San jose police are looking for three men they say ran from the scene of a street racing crash, this happened saturday night near feel . And rosenbaum avenues. Investigators say a jeep and bmw were racing when the driver of that jeep lost control, slamming into a tree. A 33yearold and a 26yearold man, they both were killed. Witnesses rushed to try to help the victims. Family members say that the pair had just left a family gathering. Theyre my nephews, both of them, both of the victims were cousins. The family is just devastated. Terrible, terrible loss. Accident. Police say three men inside the bmw stopped, got out, looked at this crash scene, then they took off. If you know where they might be, youre asked to call police. This week, jurors in the ghostship warehouse fire trial will resume deliberations after they got a twoweek break. Three jurors were dismissed last month and then we had a preplanned break, which was already scheduled before jurors could reach a verdict. You see right there, dozens marched to peoples park for a rally, sparked by conservative activists amber cummings, coming to berkeley to denounce revolution books for its communist ideas. Protesters confronted her and a handful of her supporters outside the store, marchers then gathered for a rally at the park. So we all used to say we want to protect our independence and local book store and make sure our values are maintained in the city which include access to water and open space such as peoples park. The past rightwing activists have threatened to burn down revolution books. No one was hurt during the rallies and no arrests were made. Most california students are back in their classrooms for the new school year, despite the holiday today. Safety experts are trying to draw attention to an epidemic among drivers everywhere, which is putting Young Children at risk. The recent incident captured on a cell phone says it all. A young girl in houston steps off a cool bus after her first day of kindergarten and a car just blows right past that bus with the stop sign extended, nearly hitting that little girl. Some upper 60s for many areas, so yes, it is a warm start. Upper 50s in the north bay. In cupertino expect it to be right at about 67 degrees. 75 degrees at 10 00, and then reaching 85 at 2 00 today, and our high temperatures for the south bay reaching into the low 90s once again in morgan hill. Downtown us san jose to the low 80s. Low 90s remaining in the inland east bay microclimates and for parts of the peninsula, redwood city reaching 83, while San Francisco mostly mid60s and some low 70s. In the north bay, were up to 87 in napa, and ukiah reaching 94 degrees. So still hot in some areas. As you get dressed maybe short sleeves and if you can, just make it a beach day, because a lot of people will be heading out to enjoy labor day, and this is a look at our santa cruz forecast, where we will be quite warm, and going to be slightly cooler right there the at the boardwalk but overall a nice warm day to make it a beach day. Temperatures inland reach into the low 90s. Were going to see it cooling down for the rest of the week, so on this labor day well see some of our warmer spots only making it into the low 80s by the middle of the week, in San Francisco, some low 70s for the next couple of days, and then some upper 60s for the rest of the week as many more people head back to work. Overall we have a lot of green road sensors for the south bay, parts of the peninsula. Ive had a couple of issues in the east bay. First an accident on 880 southbound near the 66th avenue offramp and that is still there, and looks like it hasnt slowed anything down, and then we also have another incident on highway 4, so we are not seeing that causing any issues, but this one may be a little bit more of a problem on i80 going eastbound, as you get ready to approach the bay bridge, so well be watching out for that. And caltrans are working on major upgrades between orinda and walnut creek stations. That means two eastbound lanes of highway 24 are closed near the lafayette station. B. A. R. T. Tracks are shut down between all three stations, with a bus bridge running in between, so it will just take you longer. For more similar weekend closures will happen between now and the end of october. Firefighters are recovering in the south bay this morning, this is after being air lifted from south monterey county. Three firefighters suffered burns while fighting that fire in greenfield off highway 101. Some of them were flown to san jose. 15 acres burned in that fire. It was marked under control by 5 00 last night. This morning, comedian and actor kevin hart is still recovering after being in a serious crash, this happened over the weekend. Hart was in a car with two others. They were driving on the windy mulholland drive in los angeles, when they veered off the road, over an embankment and rolled down the hill. In that picture you see right there, these are from the scene a short time after the crash. Car went off right there, kevin hart. Hart and the driver were air lifted to the hospital. According to chp, both suffered major back injuries. Troopers say the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of that crash. Now to the Daring Rescue of a man who spent 24 hours alone on a hiking trail near tahoe. He got stuck near the El Dorado National forest last week. Chp rescue crew had to use a helicopter to reach him. You can see the hiker in the middle of the screen waving there for the rescuers. Rescue crews say the man went camping with his family and decided to go on a hike alone. The Family Called Police when he didnt return to the camp site. Fortunately the man was not hurt but those eagle eyes those rescuers had to have to find him. I bet he was so happy when he saw them. Unbelievable. There are bears there. 4 52.
