But the real problems weret Oakland International airport. Hundreds of people had to return to pick up their bags this morning after the power outage. This was a huge mess and we got some answers. Some airports around the country had their busiest day of the thanksgiving Holiday Season already. For Oakland International, today is it. Today is their busiest day. So you can imagine, it was not good timing to have this power outage last night. Claiming your luggage may be the most annoying part of anyones journey. Add to that trying to find your bags today after they arrived without you the night before. Came down here and had to wait 30 minutes before we were told wed have to come back this morning to pick up our bags. A major power outage crippled Oakland International for several hours last night. Power was restored by 10 00 p. M. Planes remained on the tarmac. Baggage claim area was in the dark, so was security. A spokesperson said there was never danger of anyone getting past security because screenings were halted. The power failure even triggered the fire alarm visible there in red. 1400 passengers had to be rebooked. Danielle matthews on her way home to oakland was left stranded in phoenix. No hotel. No food vouchers, nothing. Sleeping in the airport with hundreds of other angry people. Maria lopez was promised by the airline they would deliver her bags to her home in cloverdale. They say its the 24th fatality involving a vehicle collision with a pedestrian this year. Pedestrian safety clearing an issue. Tragedy has struck, too many times. Reporter speaking of that big picture, the number of deaths here in san jose much higher than both San Francisco and oakland. Those concerns are definitely growing after that pedestrian was struck and killed in san jose. City officials are doing everything they can to address the issue but say it is an uphill battle. In the bay areas largest city, another trafficrelated fatality has left this normally quiet neighborhood in disbelief. Probably still be alive. Just before 4 30 this morning, police found a man lying facedown near a curve near rue bino drive and fox worthy avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene. I know we take for granted every day what we have. Not everyone thinks theyll get hit by a car. The victim not identified was the 53rd person to die in a vehicle collision in san jose this year. What makes it more troubling, he was the 7th pedestrian to be hit and killed this month alone. We know we have to do much more and we need to do better to keep our residents safe and thats both with Police Officers getting out in Traffic Enforcement units and changing the configuration of road designs. Whenever theres an accident, the department of transportation sends someone out to see what can be done to make it better. Were putting pedestrian imrovements all over the city to alert motorists. Youll see more of the beacons that flash for a pedestrian to cross. But urban planning experts say theres more pressure on our infrastructure than ever before.
