Jimmy Myrick Jr. Governor's Courage Award bestowed on Melissa Silverman

A Special Olympics Maryland athlete was surprised Friday upon receiving the Jimmy Myrick Jr. Governor's Courage Award.Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and top state police officials thanked Polar Bear Plunge participants and Special Olympics Maryland athletes for keeping the plunge going in these difficult times.Usually, when we think of the Polar Bear Plunge, we think of a dip out at Sandy Point State Park. This year, because of the global coronavirus pandemic, the plunge has gone virtual.Officials held a subdued opening ceremony Friday afternoon in Annapolis."I want to congratulate everyone for working so hard this year to put together a truly one-of-a-kind Polar Bear Plunge," Hogan said."This virtual plunge, it takes a different format, but it’s all for the same cause of supporting Special Olympics Maryland and the 8,700 athletes so they can go play this summer," Maryland State Police Superintendent Col. Jerry Jones said.Hogan presented the Jimmy Myrick Jr. Governor's Courage Award to Special Olympics athlete Melissa Silverman, who was completely caught off guard."Jimmy was a very good friend of mine, and I just want to thank (everyone), once again for this wonderful award," Silverman said.When asked whether he'd be plunging virtually, the governor jokingly said: "Maybe I’ll plunge in a hot bathtub later on."Watch the ceremony in its entirety:​
