[laughter] >> ainsley: not that kind. >> brian: i have been to the in netherlands i have never seen anything like this. it is fantastic. steve and ainsley, you have been to a lot of kitchens, the sin itcinergy looks like someone's house. i don't feel like i'm in a diner. i feel like i'm in somebody's house. i feel like a bed and breakfast. i didn't really knock i just walked in without their permission. they accepted me. >> ainsley: they are fox viewers. you are welcome, brian. you are always welcome with them. they are wonderful. >> steve: brian, for the most part, you have maintained kind of a pickleball personality because you like to stay out of the kitchen. just saying you like to stay out of the kitchen. >> brian: right. absolutely. >> ainsley: brian, you are doing a great job. >> in a little while ronna mcdaniel will be here. >> ainsley: we were watching sean's reaction after the debate. staying behind and getting rations for the spin room. it's fun to hear the perspective from the people. because now it's gearing up why have been so looking forward to this. we have been talking about it for months. can you believe it's in the can now? today this morning we are talking about which candidates have resonated with us. which ones need to learn from this debate, for the next debate. which ones will be the first to drop out. it's so fun to be a part of this political process. >> steve: and especially with the big debate. because, as you were alluding to, brian stayed up all night lock, a lot of people don't realize we are hourly employees so we love to see a great big debate in the middle of the week. all right. in the meantime. >> i believe there is a song about my overtime that i'm going to earn. >> ainsley: yes. >> ainsley: oliver anthony touched on that. >> steve: first republicans primary debate is in the books with candidates clashing on a wide variety of topics like the border and abortion and funding for ukraine. >> ainsley: who made the biggest impression for you and your family and most of america and who fell flat? >> brian: well, if you didn't watch, no problem. we're going to recap it for you. alexis mcdams is live 20 minutes from me to break it down. alexis? i see you are having a great time at the diner i will come over and have bun one of those dutch baby pancakes. policy and trying to connect one-on-one with voters and trying to show off personalities out there on that stage, if we didn't that's to be seen today some people said first impression for some of the candidates including vivek ramaswamy who prides himself on not being an politician. as they are all throwing elbows up on that stage they really went after ramaswamy. watch. this let me address a question on everybody's mind at home tonight. who the heck is this skinny guy with a fun will last name and what the heck is he doing in the middle of the debate stage. i'm not a politician, you are right about that. i'm an entrepreneur. my parents came to this country with no money 40 years ago. i have gone on to found multi billion dollars companies. i did it while marrying my wife and raising two sons. following our faith in god. that is the american dream. >> the guy. >> bret: listen, listen. >> i have had enough. >> no, no. >> hold on. >> i have had enough already tonight of a guy who sounds like chatgpt standing up here. [boos] >> today ukraine is not a priority for the united states of america. >> the problem that vivek doesn't understand is he wants to hand ukraine to russia russia. he wants to let china eat taiwan. he wants to go and stop funding israel. he wants to make america less safe. under your watch you would make america less safe. you have no foreign policy experience and it shows. it shows. >> every time vivek's name was mentioned he had time to respond. so he really had the spotlight whether he was being slammed or not. a conversation about abortion, also, took center stage with the candidates. all identified as pro-life but they differed on the federal ban. >> we need to stop demonizing this issue so in order to do it. let's find consensus. >> nikki, you are my friend but consensus is the opposite of leadership. >> you are talking about a federal ban. be honest with the american people. >> i am being honest. >> we haven't had over 45 pro-life senators 100 years. no republican president can ban abortion no more than democrats can ban all the state laws. don't make men and women on their when you know we don't have 60 senate votes in the house. >> another top issue, border security as people across the country are really seeing the impact of an open border policy in their own cities you with the surge of migrants moving in. >> would you support sending u.s. special forces over the border into mexico? >> yes. and i will do it on day one you have the cartels controlling a lot of the part of your southern border. we have to reestablish the rule of law and on moving forward nikki haley says americans are ready for a fresh face in the white house. >> it is time for a new generational conservative leader. we have to look at the fact that three quarters of americans don't want a rematch between trump and biden and we have to face the fact that trump is the most disliked politician in americans. >> education is a top priority tim scott was on stage saying it's time to make a change when we're talking about teacher's unions. on education the only way we change education in this nation is to break the backs of the teacher's unions. they are standing in the door house of our kids, locking them into failing schools and locking them out of the greatest future they could have. >> but this morning as everyone wakes up across the country, they will be the ones to decide how things went out here. did they hear enough about the economy, border security and abortion did they think anything was left off that list or how did they perform on the debate stage. personal, how they connect. send it back to you. >> steve: thank you very much, alexis. thank you very much. you watch political things and won determine which of those people would i like to have a beer with, it's interesting because we had lee carter on a little while ago and we always talk about how it's the independents who wind up choosing the election because, you know, the people on the right love the right nominee. the people on the left love the left nominee. she said the two winners with independents were nikki haley and chris christie and she pointed out with independents a lot of people look into vivek ramaswamy. ainsley, to your point earlier, when you were towering with carley where a lot of people were googling, it's like who is this guy? i would like to know how did he get his money. >> ainsley: there is vivek right there. >> steve: there he is in the middle. that was lee carter's assessment of what happened. when you look at the papers today. here is a little recap of the headlines. the "new york post" said republican nominees hold refreshing and lively debate over issues that really effect americans and they're absolutely right. >> ainsley: refreshing. interesting. "new york times" vivek ramaswamy comes in hot, stealing the spotlight. >> washington examiner opinion page republican debate nikki haley wins and it's not particularly close. and finally. >> ainsley: "u.s.a. today" on trump-less debate stage ramaswamy and haley make themselves heard. those two were really the frontrunners in their mind nikki haley strong showing when she was really honest about the abortion issue because it's an abortion that they really don't want to talk about. many say just throw it to the states. she was fairly honest and said look, it's never going to happen. we don't have the votes for it. we need to talk about this. and then the debt. she was honest. desantis, you, pence, scott, tim scott, y'all raised the debt while y'all were in congress with that $2.2 trillion covid stimulus bill and trump added 8 trillion to the debt. she said it's time for an american -- a new american accountant in the white house. vivek, brian, really quickly, vivek when he walks out on stage so happy to be there. what up, peace out. how are you? he just looks fun. he was really energetic embraced it all. he was a surprise vocal point. >> steve: he was a surprise right there. >> brian: when he said everybody was bought and paid for on the stage aim yep nate add lot of people. foreign policy looks like -- it looks like it is done from maybe owe-maybe some type of survey of what republicans think and tired i guess of the way afghanistan war ended. they don't want to be involved in ukraine. also, governor desantis was solid. i think the most pressure going in was on governor desantis shoulders. does he deserve number two. donors pug back playing wait and see. they pleased enough to get back in or continue to fund his gain. and nobody has been attacked like he has i think the number is $20 million from the trump camp on desantis let alone many people like the "new york times" writing a hit piece on him and his family on a regular basis there's not enough like that. the other thing i felt it was definitely a trump crowd that was open. you mentioned trump. a lot of trump hats in the audience. a lot of trump hats in milwaukee. so his presence was felt. and i think the most learned thing was said by trey gowd. if you want trump on the stage, then find a way to close the gap. the 40 point gap. you do that he will show up. unless you do trump has hands full legal issues. front and center today. yesterday we saw rudy giuliani turn himself in and the mugshot presented. we will get that from the former president, steve. >> steve: and, in fact, that's our lead. in the former president not at yesterday's debate but his name was mentioned early and often. >> ainsley: trump is expected to turn turn him envelope into the fulton county jail on election interference down in fulton county, georgia. >> brian: that's why bryan llenas is outside the jail complex, brian? >> good morning, former president donald trump is expected to turn himself in for arrest some time this evening here at the fulton county jail. the area around the jail will be put into a hard lockdown. that includes a temporary no fly zone in this area. now, the sheriff says ultimately that he plans on treating the former president just like he would any other criminal defendant, and that includes the expectation that he will take the first presidential mugshot in history. now, trump's looming legal battles, well they played prominently last night. at the fox news debate in milwaukee. >> if former president trump is convicted in a court of law, would you still support him as your party's choice? please raise your hand if you would. [cheers] >> now, every candidate raised their hand except for former arkansas governor asa hutchinson you saw former new jersey governor chris christie put his hand halfway up ultimately he said he would support trump there was this heated exchange between former president mike pence and vivek ramaswamy. listen. >> join me in making a commitment. >> hold on. >> on day one you would pardon donald trump. dime pay it forward. that's right. >> donald trump convicted of these crimes. >> that's the difference between you and me i actually. >> now, so far nine of trump's 18 co-defendants have surrendered here. these are their mug shots including trump lawyers, john eastman, a smiling jenna ellis, sidney powell and the most notable rudy giuliani. the president will be released on $200,000 bond. defendants have until noon tomorrow to turn themselves here at the fulton county jail. a jail by the way that is under investigation by the department of justice for excessive violence and horrendous living conditions, guys. an inmate last year allegedly was eaten alive by bed bugs. >> steve: i hadn't heard that and, bryan, you can see that right behind bryan guardrail gate put on last night to tease they were going to talk about the former president and his legal troubles. one question a lot of people have today, bryan, is will the former president be mugshotted? >> yeah. we anticipate and expect, we are going to take the sheriff spatula bottom at his word that he will be being fingerprinted even have his weight taken. he will have to get on a scale. a medical evaluation, and a mugshot. so we will see if that happens. obviously at the end of the day, the secret service will have a lot to say about this. if it is in fact the case that he will be treated like everybody else. we can anticipate that mugshot the first of the four dimentsd first time he will take in a mugshot. >> ainsley: i doubt he will be smile. all his. this is something he is fed up with. >> steve: thank you very much for the live report from if you feel ton county. >> ainsley: you're going to have a busy day, thank you. >> steve: brian kilmeade mentioned trey gowdy. brian, i don't know if you everywhere watching trey in the pregame show with dana and bill about 8:30 last night. trey gowdy had a good observation and it was about how thcan the stage refer to the former president because, you know, some people were there and hit him hard nikki haley did, asa hutchison and chris christie but others like vivek were essentially proxies for him. >> ainsley: said he would pardon him. >> steve: trey gowdy said the thing about the former president is these candidates need to have essentially the same ideas but fewer indictments. >> ainsley: yeah. and, brian, didn't you notice the crowd going crazy any time someone -- someone said something negative about trump. the crowd would boo. like when chris christie said someone has to stop trump's conduct and he got a lot of boos and then he said you can't boo, you can boo but it doesn't change the truth. you could tell the crowd still big trump fans, so were they there to find out who they want as the change your minds? where do you see this going? >> well, i think they are open. i think a lot of people are open. but they really think to themselves, since these dimes came down, they are saying to themselves this is so over the top. as usual, when they deal with the president, they are actually making people go back and say okay, this is so over the top. i'm not going to stand for it. this is an attack on my party and my beliefs. it's not just about trump. the thing, also, mike pence did something interesting. when asked, are you going to pardon trump? he said number one, he wasn't been convicted. why do you think is he going to be convicted? number two is for me to actually pardon somebody, they have to show contrition reform my life and decides to give a second chance. if you ever see donald trump saying wow, i should have taken those documents or january 6th a bad idea? that's never going to happen. so if mike pence would become president that might be an issue. we'll see what happens. i have a sense, a lot of people think there might not be one trial before the election, it will just be looming over the entire event. meanwhile, hunter's name came up in the event. hunter because now the controversy around him is growing. and more than just a section of people saying it does involve the former vice president turn president. now it's revealed that hunter traveled to at least 13 countries with his vice president dad, one of which was serbia where he did one of his famous deals. was his dad involved in that? caleb, why? >> well, i think it would be really important for the frontrunner to go to the debate so we could really see how his ideas compare to the rest of the candidates. we got see if he is still in debate shape from three years ago. >> steve: who else held their hand up? right here. >> i just believe the democratic process. we are the voters. we need to be educated on all the issues. with that being said, a little caveat, i think that the debate would have looked differently if he was there so in a way it was good to get to note other candidates. >> i completely agree with you. because it was an opportunity to hear everybody talk a little bit about their policies as well. >> who was really surprised by nikki haley? >> i really liked her coming out of the debate. >> steve: you are a democrat. >> yes. but she was really someone that i can see actually winning the general election. she had a point of view that i think some of the independents and even democrats can get around as biden is just doing worse and worse for our country. >> steve: okay. sammy, you are a democrat as well. you are nodding as well. nikki haley was very pragmatic and had a moderate message and in a general election that's the kind of person you want to represent your party. >> yes. she had a good answer on abortion. you know, a realistic answer on abortion. i think that resonated with a lot of people. so on that point, you know, she was good. >> steve: can i see the hands? how many people thought that you hadn't really seen vivek ramaswamy before, but suddenly you are like googling him and things like that because you want to know more about him? all right. what is it about vivek last night that said hey, i have got to look into that guy. >> not a politician. he was funny. he was witty. he just said a lot of things that i like to hear. i agreed -- i couldn't believe i actually agreed on a lot of things that he actually said about ukraine. i mean, i think it's enough funding for ukraine right now we have start taking care of our own people. i like the fact that he said that he would support the border. the fact that he was mentioning family values. god first. it was just a lot of things that just really resonated with me. >> steve: you are okay with pulling the plug on ukraine funding. >> right now, yes. >> steve: and regarding his stance on israel? >> i mean, listen. he wet behind the ears, absolutely. we have had a lot of presidents like that. go back to kennedy. so was he. >> steve: sure. >> that's why we have advisers and he can have a cabinet if he were to be, you know, elected as president. that's what a cabinet is for to help him along. >> steve: you also -- you were a republican and surprised by him. >> i think vivek was exciting and genuine. he kept it simple. i liked that he is an outsider. he speaks his mind, which i liked. everybody else -- he thinks outside the box. everybody else is more of the same. >> steve: mary josephine i know wowe were just talking to you. looking at my notes looking for somebody ron desantis. you thought he was a little flat. >> i think he was terrible. there were a couple points he made at the end of the debate about firing the prosecutors that weren't harm on crime. mentioning george soros. but i just felt like the he didn't come across as genuine. he was very flat. there was nothing striking about him last night. he was really disappointing. >> steve: okay. yaitin. you were shaking your head as well. i know you are are a democrat. >> i'm an open school mom. i really, you know, like the fact that desantis handled the covid policies really well in florida i wanted to hear him break out and he didn't. it was a disappoints night, i think. >> steve: let's poll the audience. we will start down here with you. everybody just give me your winner from last night and your runner-up. all right. >> okay. i think nikki haley was my winner. she surprised me. she was my surprise candidate. i have been following her for years. i think she is strong on foreign policy. i think she was very strong in the debate. she stood her ground. my runner-up probably was vivek. >> steve: okay. >> like the rest of them. however i'm not a fan. he reminds me too much of obama. steve receive receive sammy? >> vivek and his stance on ukraine resonates with me. i think it's time that we should start taking care of americans and not going overseas. >> steve: you are a democrat who says pull the plug on ukraine. >> yes. steve joe biden may be watching right now. good morning, mr. president. >> and i'm a veteran as well. >> vivek. and then i would have to say nikki haley. >> steve: all right. >> vivek. i think vivek, he was the most attacked. if you leave out trump and biden they weren't there he was the most attacked and i think that he handles -- he doesn't get caught up in emotion. i notice that i like that. the objectivity, authenticity, genuine and exciting. >> steve: yiatin. >> nikki haley followed by vivek. >> caleb? >> i think vivek clearly won. he has a great economic policy. and i think nikki haley was the clear runner-up as well. she seemed really reasonable and really willing to work with others. >> steve: it's really interesting because going into the debate so many people thought ron desantis he has to perform. let's see how he does. but here we are, you know, thursday morning quarterbacking, and we're all talking about vivek and nikki. all right. great panel. thank you very much. by the way, who flew in on a helicopter? >> i am relieved it's over. i think it went incredibly well, thank you to fox. i think martha and bret did a great job. i love that we talked about policy. that's what people in wisconsin, here in this diner, people across the country want to hear us talk about. they are hurting under biden. >> brian: one thing i wish they asked nor questions about the effect of the crowd. you set a record last night with the crowd size. >> this is the largest attended primary debate ever in history. we had over 5,000 people there. it was a huge, huge number. and they were excited to come in and they flew. in they flew in to milwaukee to come see this debate. >> brian: i know you were hoping until monday that president trump would show up. do you think he made a mistake by not showing up even though you wanted him to, tactically, do you understand that he may or may not have made a mistake or made the right move in staying home? >> i understand the strategy his campaign is putting forward. they are saying, you know, we are up so much why should we risk being on the debate stage. i do want to see him on the debate stage. i have said this allot. i don't think it's just about the primary if he does end up being the nominee. we need make sure biden gets on the debate stage and also take this time to get in front of independent voters and the american people to contrast what our party stands for vs. what biden is doing. >> brian: so, in putting this together, you had the one minute answers, the 30 second follow-up. you had the 45 second closing statement. no opening statement. how much did the rnc have to do with the format? >> that's fox. we gave that to them. we did the credentialing for people coming into the audience and the criteria, right? the 1% polling threshold and 40,000 small dollar donors but fox came up with the format. >> brian: what's going to be the will format for fox business in september. >> 3% polling. we are going to continue to go up in the polling i think for every debate and 50,000 small dollar donors. >> brian: suarez, will hurd and jerry johnson didn't make the first debate do you recommend they drop out. >> when i called all of them saying they didn't meet the criteria we administered it without bias. we are a rule of law party. you have a chance do make if you go and get 3% that's still there i'm not going to recommend any of them drop out. but i will say all of them would be better than joe biden, even those who didn't make the stage. >> brian: i was shocked how aggressive mike pence was. i thought he did strong. vivek ramaswamy is the guy people are talking about. nikki haleyens performance was extremely good. it showed her great resume. ron desantis was solid. >> what are the biggest surprises for you are not supposed to pick the horse in the race. >> i know i don't think they talked about president trump that much. that did surprise me. >> brian: you wanted to hear more about trump. >> i didn't want to i just thought if he is the run fronter i was surprised they didn't talk about that more. i was surprised i think that was part of trump's calculus they would go after each other not after me if i'm not there. they did that i was very pleased to see them talk about abortion. democrats used that in 2022. spent 350 million on abortion. if our candidates aren't age to fend a response and put oresponse we are not going to win and they will do it again in 2024. i thought all of them did a good job on that. >> brian: so a federal 15 weeks should that be the message? should it be six weeks? should it be zero weeks? ronna what is the message. >> they were different on the federal. they all had a consensus that as a country we should all say when a baby feels pain at 15 weeks we should all agree that this is a bridge too far and we should not be having abortions. they called out the extremism of the democrats who support due date abortions and gender selected abortions. i think they put them on the defense and on the streaks on the issue. >> brian: one thing i'm seeing is bank your vote. you want people voting early. that's a lot different the former president don't trust it show up election day you have a different theme this year. >> president trump has done a video for bank your vote.com as has mike pence and many of these presidential candidates. we can't have 45 days of voting and think we are going to show up on election day and win. i put it this way, brian, if you have a game being played for four quarters you don't start scoring in the fourth. you want to be scoring in the first. it saves us a lot of money when high propensity voters vote that first day. we are not chasing them. we can go after independent and swing voters. test bank 81010: 20,000 you lost last time about 20,000 voters in wisconsin. >> yeah. it was tight. >> brian: and independents. >> run right through wisconsin. >> brian: great start a sprint become back here for the rnc in 11 months. >> exactly, thanks, brian. >> brian: thank you. thanks for getting up with us, too. still ahead on the show, mining pence may have said the most at yesterday's debate. will his talk translate to votes? [applause] >> ainsley: that was good. >> that was really good moment for him. republicans an a. independents a b, democrats a d. this was probably his biggest positive moment across the board. he was throughout the night somewhat polarizing. he definitely added to his republican base. there were some hard core republicans who loved everything he had to say. there were some independents were turned off by him and democrats in large part really rejected a lot of what he had to say. i think he is going to have some pretty big additions to the republican base and we're going to see that show up in the polls. >> ainsley: okay. martha asked all the candidates. she asked mike pence about the mental test, should a president have to take a mental and physical test. this is what mike pence said. it's pretty funny. >> well, it might be a good idea to have everybody in washington, d.c. pass a mental test.
