i'm dana perino. this is "america's newsroom." it was a great weekend but there was a lot of news and a lot of troubling news as well across the board. we'll have it all for you this hour. border patrol records show nearly two dozen known or suspected terrorists were caught at the sourn border last year. that's a small snapshot of the surge. >> bill: border agents encountered more than 221,000 migrants in the month of march alone. a 24% increase from last year. the most encounters in any month since february of 2000. >> dana: half of them were expelled under the title 42 border policy it allowed them to turn away over a million migrants during the pandemic but it is set to expire next month. they project up the 18,000 migrants will try to cross the border every day. >> bill: a grow list of of democrats. texas democrat henry cuellar. >> he can't say we have a public health issue here and say everything is is fine at t border and then lift the title 42, which is the health order. 221,000 people this last month and certainly right now the cartels are looking at title 42. the moment they lift that you will see a lot more people coming across. >> bill: this is where we start on the border. bill melugin live in eagle pass, texas who had the story first. good morning. >> good morning to you. according to a cbp record i obtained through a freedom of information act request there were at least 23 known or suspected terrorists caught here at our southern border in 2021. we'll dive into the numbers for you. this shows there were approximately 23 hits on the tsdb. the terrorist screening database. four in san diego sector, four in yuma, two to tucson. three in el paso, four in del rio and four in the rio grande valley center. they put together the database. these are only the ones they know about and caught. if you look at file video here we'll explain why it is such a concern. in the last six months alone here at the border there have been more than 300,000 known gotaways. border patrol can't be everywhere at once. people are getting through in major numbers. that's one of the reasons why former ice director tom homan says the terrorist numbers, the guys caught at the border last year are a major concern and he says dhs secretary mayorkas has to start considering the border crisis as a national security issue. take a listen. >> he knows 23 people have been arrested at the border. he knows that. he is the secretary of homeland security. at what point does this man have enough integrity to tell the white house i cannot keep this border open no matter what because we have created a national security issue. if he had any intig tee at all he would tell the white house no we need to secure the border. >> guys, if we can actually dip out of the photos now and take a live camera that we have here in eagle pass and go to it now we have a roving cameraman set up here. a mass release of migrants about to take place right here at a local ngo. something we've been reporting on for months now that the federal government, border patrol facilities in del rio sector completely over capacity and doing mass releases day in and out. we've shown them to you in brownsville and rio grande valley and now in the del rio sector as well in eagle pass. it's mostly single adults being released happening by the hundreds every day up here. back out here live those march numbers you guys were talking about show that the federal government released more than 80,000 illegal immigrants into the u.s. in the month of march alone. that is not counting the more than 60,000 gotaways during the month of march. you add those two numbers together it's 140,000 people who got into the country illegally and are still in the country right now. >> bill: there is no good news in that report. bill melugin back on the border on this monday morning. >> dana: one of president biden's closest senate allies is one of the democrats expressing concerns about ending title 42. >> i hope it will be reconsidered. we need to come together and show our values that we can secure our border and improve the inhumane immigration system. the immigration system that so many of us have worked to try to address for years. >> dana: let's bring in marc thiessen. fox news contributor. i want to show you there is many democrats who have basically tried to distance themselves from the biden administration and said to the white house we do not think this is a good idea. i think you and i agree an something. when senator kuhn who is very close to president biden says this. it was the white house saying go out and float this trial balloon and see how we'll do with trying to not end title 42. what do you think? >> i agree. no one closer to fellow delaware democrat. if he is saying this there may be a sign they'll reverse this. this is political kryptonite for democrat. the poll came out last week and showed 56% americans oppose lifting title 42. the most unpopular decision joe biden made as president. we're talking about afghanistan withdrawal, everything else. this will be the most unpopular decision he has made. you have the vulnerable democrats like mark kelly in arizona, one in nevada and hassan is concerned about it in new hampshire. it's because of fentanyl. not just a surge of illegal migrants but fentanyl. they reached record level of deaths in 2021 now exceeding up murders and homicides and gun shootings across the country as cause of death. the border disaster has an impact across the country and have an impact across the country at the polls. >> bill: what needs to be emphasized the democrats were calling for this as you rightly point out chris coons. he a brother in arms in the state of delaware. beto o'rourke is against in. henry cuellar. with that's as a back drop here is kevin mccarthy with perhaps a line of campaigning for republicans before the mid-terms. >> what americans want, need and deserve is a clear, common sense alternative. that's what is happening with the house republicans. we will secure our border to stop this immigration crisis but more importantly to stop the fentanyl coming into america. that's the difference of why the president's approval ratings are so oh low and why american will make a new course and republicans will take the majority. >> bill: border, drugs. how likely is it, marc, when republicans take control of the house, senate and white house someday they will make it a policy to finish the wall? >> i have think it's very likely. and also restore the remain in mexico policy. restore the safe third country agreements that president trump negotiated where people have to apply for asylum. this is the problem that we should not be depending on a public health measure to prevent us from having an open border. joe biden has been protected from the consequences of his decisions at the border by title 42, by the pandemic because he got rid of the remain in mexico policy where people had to apply for asylum and got rid of the safe third country agreements and stopped deportations. the only thing that has prevented an absolute deluge of people coming across the border has been title 42. if he lifts that, americans will finally -- if we think the border has been a disaster for the last year it will be a disaster they've never seen and they will pay a political price. >> the point is republicans will make you can't trust democrats if they control the house, senate and white house. thanks for coming back on a monday morning. >> dana: so the other thing the "wall street journal" wrote this morning something i think is a point we should emphasize. we made it a few times here and we do it on the five as well. biden's immigration damage. by rescinding title 42 he is doing more to help restrictionist. it may force mr. biden to continue title 42. if he won't do that he ought to drop his attempt to remain in mexico and -- the alternative is more border chaos and more fuel for what democrats are facing in november. it seems like the white house will back down on it. because they floated this in the last several weeks now, you've had caravans starting to form that are planning to arrive around may 23. now you will be -- let's say the biden administration pulls back but you have all the people on the border. what have you done? you add more problems. it hurts legal immigration and the process. >> bill: that it does. meanwhile this now. seven are dead and 11 injured in lviv after russia's military launched missiles into the city. considered a relatively safe haven for refugees fleeing other parts of the country. matt finn is on the ground near the train station and fire station that was hit. what did you see? >> we saw a lot today. this tire shop is one of four locations struck by a missile here in lviv today. there is still cleanup and investigation going on now. lviv's mayor says three out of the four missile strikes today were civilian locations, not military. seven people are dead so far. lviv mayor said the deaths are the first wartime deaths within the city since this war began. so far four deaths tallied within this tire repair shop. 11 other people injured. in a short while ago the owner of the shop allowed us to tour the damage. 15 to 20 people were on the property at the time of the missile strike and talked to one man says he is a live because he just arrived to work at the time of the strike of the blast. he said his younger co-workers died, some of them in their 30s. also right behind this tire shop is a hotel. the windows were blasted out. we went inside that hotel and talked to a young man, a refugee from kharkiv. he said his sister and baby were taken to the hospital. this tire shop is directly above a busy train track. there is a question of whether russians were targeting the tracks. ukrainians are using train tracks to transport military gear and migrants using trains to get in and out of lviv. it all began around 8:45 this morning. the crew saw large black plumes of smoke. 48 hours ago we were live on air when the air raid sirens went off. four russian cruise missiles were intercepted sadly. this town of lviv is made up of 800,000 people. it is on the far western side of this country close to the country of poland and there are a lot of refugees here. we went to the train station here on saturday and there were thousands of people cramming into trains. some were coming from as far east as kyiv and some were leaving this town headed to poland. some heartbreaking stories of mostly women and children some with young toddlers and newborns trying to escape the danger that is clearly present here in lviv. >> bill: what a sight that is it matt finn on the ground in lviv. back at home a weekend crime wave sweeping the country. shoppers running for their lives at a shopping mall. suspect already is released on bond. >> dana: unreal. a trail of blood in an upscale new york neighborhood leads police to this footage. the body of a mom in a duffel bag blocks from her home. >> bill: will elon musk buy twitter? >> we have to deal with the facts. i don't like to speculate too much at this point. we have a dead mother and wife. so let's look at the facts that we have. sad fact is that well north of 90% of the time the victim knows her killer. so that begins to take us out of the random situation that could have occurred here which is much more difficult to solve. then we have a couple of these clues. text message that broke late last night. the text message came from the victim's phone to the husband. consider what must have happened there. the killer would have to know the husband's actual name, quite likely. because you are in your spouse's phone as husband. with the fact also that therefore the victim would likely have to have access to that phone means that we begin to come out of something random again and what i said at the top begin to get a little closer to something that is within the parameters of her life. that narrows things down. we have a pretty good idea of the where. it is the house. by now the police will know more than the house, they will know the room. you also have a good idea of the when, right? now what they need to do is in that relatively narrow time frame put somebody on the spot then in that location and it is going to be in my estimation we can begin to shrink the playing field to something that's relevant to some vector within her life. >> bill: the text message was sent to the father, the husband. and the text message said your whole family is next. >> dana: so do you think nypd know more than we do obviously and they're very good at what they do. how soon do you think they'll be able to actually have a person of interest or suspect or an arrest? >> they may now. again it is tough to predict in a case like this but i would think that they will solve this pretty soon. >> dana: we're looking at this picture here. the body bag being dragged in a duffel -- it's a duffel bag, a body inside being dragged down a street. is this something you would think is premeditated or possibly not? like something a crime of passion, anger? >> the latter. if you think about it the duffel bog, the hockey bag was probably at the scene and worked for the perpetrator to move the body. it was obviously not very well planned out if it was planned. the body was only moved to a half mile from the location, left on a well trodden path. i know there has been a lot of speculation online about a hit. this was something relatively spontaneous that arose out of a situation of passion. >> bill: maybe we'll get some answers today. >> dana: love having you. thank you. russia launches a deadly assault in lviv considered a safe hub for more refugees. what does it signal about putin's invasion strategy? we will ask jack keane. >> not only do we need to defund but dismantle and start anew. >> i'm for defunding the police. a reall occasion of funds. >> dana: cori bush still calling to defund the police. missouri democrat spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on private security for herself. i saved 25%. booyah. and now you're relaxing! we're working from home. save up to 25% when you bundle home and auto with allstate. ♪simply irresistible♪ ♪ ♪ ♪simply irresistible♪ applebee's irresist-a-bowls are back. now starting at $8.99. now that's eatin' good in the neighborhood. >> well, first of all obviously as bill pointed out the main effort is the donbas region. ground warfare. high-end conventional on open, flat terrain which clearly favors the attacker and in this case the russians obviously are trying to come in the back door of where ukraine is defending against the russians in the donbas area. so our viewers know, this is the area where the russian separatists and russians have been since 2014. so they are very familiar with the area. supply lines are much shorter to russia. they have a commander there who has been in the area for six years and it's in the southern area here that he has been in charge of since february the 24th when the invasion began. he is the one commander who has had success. so this is about to take place within the next couple of weeks. i believe the fighting will be very fierce. it is critical that we get the weapons in the hands of the ukrainians that they've asked for. the administration is finally getting those kinds of weapons to them. certainly. we applaud that. other countries are doing it as well. they are also as you pointed out, they are continuing their air bombardment campaign. they want the ukrainians to feel vulnerable in the major cities throughout ukraine. they know full well that lviv is a major refugee center for many people in ukraine who don't want to leave the country but want to leave the area of operations where their lives are being threatened. so that's the picture that's in front of us. putin certainly wants the whole southern coast is what he would like to have. he is going to start certainly by making certain he gets control of the donbas region. we cannot underestimate the determination and the skill and will of the ukrainians in this fight. >> bill: on the point about getting the weapons where they need to go, i thought the signal from biden last thursday about the $800 million additional aid puts us well over a billion dollar in the war against putin is significant. we're knee deep. if not all in, we are in in a substantial way. how do we know if the $800 million gets to those soldiers who are dug in in the donbas and southeastern ukraine? >> well, there has been some evidence presented on fox that some of the weapons in the past and some that are ongoing now have not reached everybody. the challenge we have here is very long supply lines and we're not in charge of that. the weapons come in, we load it to ukrainian trucks at the polish border and off they go to provide those weapons to their troops who are already being deployed some place. there are bottlenecks in their system. we can't guarantee of getting in the hands of the fighter. we can guarantee it getting in the hands of the transporter who is ukrainian and taking it to the fighter. the good news when you look at the shopping list of weapons. these are the weapons that zelenskyy has been asking for. they are on that list and the challenge we will have is sustaining it. we'll go to more nato weapons and former soviet union weapons because we're running out of those. there are countries who have a lot of it but not willing to help us, like india and vietnam. they have russian equipment. but yes, sustaining it is going to be absolutely crucial as we are going forward here. >> dana: it feels like a momentous week. thank you for kicking us off. we'll see you again before the end of the week. thank you. >> have a great week. >> bill: from the middle east israeli police clashing with palestinians at a holy site in jerusalem. the unrest after a weekend of violence in the old ci as passover and ramadan and easter sunday all overlap. dan springer is live in jerusalem with the late oeft on that today. dan. >> hi, bill. israel is on high alert as tensions are building over the last several weeks and months as it seems like every day there is some sort of a clash. the big concern is one of these clashes will lead to a wider conflict. early this morning israeli forces were conducting a raid in the west bank looking for weapons and suspects that have carried out deadly attacks in recent weeks. dozens of palestinians threw rocks and explosives at the soerlsd. troops responded with gunfire and critically injured two palestinians. they also made 11 arrests. these types of raids are more common this year. they've arrested more than 1100 palestinians. jerusalem has been the other hot spot centered on a couple of holy sites. during a time of key holy days. today there was a large gathering at the western wall but everything was peaceful. that was not the case on sunday or last friday when violence broke out between mainly young palestinians who were throwing rocks at israeli police and jews who they were escorting to the temple mount for a vits. more than a dozen people injured sunday and 150 friday. a year ago there was an 11-day war that rockets were fired into jerusalem. the hope is this won't happen this time and cooler heads will prevail. >> bill: we'll watch it. nice to have you in jirs lem. >> dana: democrats are starting to worry about a possible bloodbath in november as president biden's approval rating sinks as inflation rises. the long covid labor market. millions who stayed home because of the pandemic are not eager to return to work. dagan mcdowell is here next. >> tech: that's service on your time. schedule now. >> singers: ♪ safelite repair, safelite replace. ♪ i brought in ensure max protein, with thirty grams of protein. those who tried me felt more energy in just two weeks!
