what will he do. let's ask former secretary of state mike pompeo. what about the new news that's happened. it looks like come june sweden and finland will ask for admission. should we say welcome? >> we certainly should. it's the case vladimir putin can see nato is real, it's serious. it doesn't present an offensive threat to him. his claim that it presents risk to the russian people is silliness. sweden presents no risk to the russian people. i think they can see being in the mushy middle as ukraine was where it wasn't clear if the guarantees that were made in the budapest memorandum, if they would be real or not. my last thought is, it's great to see nato waking up. i pray these european countries get real religion and it's not just for moment. they are committed to spending 2% of their gdp and that's not enough. germans, france and all the others need to get to their commitments as well. brian: and get off russian gas. do you think they will have a different focus after the carnage we are seeing and what the russians are capable of and not capable of? >> i hope so. their political leaders have failed them. your point about energy is precisely right. we warned them in 2017 that building that pipeline and depending on russian gags would come back to haunt them and it has. i am hoping after this moment passions that they will go back and decide it's not worth it. we'll count on america to come in. they made promises to their fellow nato member states. i fear when this moment passes they will go back to where they have been the past 25 years. brian: they are living through this now, they are seeing innocent people being killed and tortured. my hope is they won't go back it to, their people won't let them. you said this about our main threat along with russia. >> the partner in russia's aggression, xi jinping is our greatest challenge cia has ever faced. brian: do you agree, more profound than the soviet union in the 60s and 70s. >> absolutely. i'm heartened to hear the director say that. xi is watching this. my guess is not only is he a silent partner with russia. and if we provide the ukrainians with the armaments they need. xi will be supporting russia. it may be that xi jinping made his bed and he can't let putin fail and won't. brian: do you think china is likely to attack taiwan? >> i don't think this changes xi's intentions. i will want to delay and make sure his generals weren't flying him. his words to he unify taiwan aren't going to change. he may wait just a little bit. but we should not forget for one moment. the chinese communist party presents the greatest single the external threat to the united states of america. he made the commitment that he will reunify his nation by drawing taiwan back in. he won't walk away from that because putin had a difficult time securing kyiv. brian: i believe we should do it with uniformed soldiers. how do you feel about that? >> the only guy there who made any sense was reagan. because he understood that inflation sma rinks the value of your money. what's in your wallets and pocketbooks. that's the definition of inflation. you lose purchasing power. you can't buy anything, what you thought you could buy a week ago, a month ago, a year ago. reagan understood that. that's why he was such a superb president. brian: can we learn by going back to the 1980s, how to solve this problem? >> the answer is yes. reagan did a couple things when he came into office. number one he told the fed chairman, paul volcker. once upon a time i worked for volcker as his secretary in new york. he told voark, pull back on the money supply, increase the value of the dollar. let me handle the politics. you get the inflation rate down. pull back on money supply, improve the value of the dollar. that was the key point. the burden of proof will be on the federal reserve. reagan cut tax rates. he lowered marginal tax rates across the board for businesses, for individuals, for capital gain. it didn't take effect for a while. but when it did, it increased the supply side of the economy. more people producing, more people working. think about this for a minute. if one definition of inflation is too much money chasing too few goods, he had volcker curb the money supply, but reagan increased the supply of goods. so that was anti-inflationary. those tax cuts created a 3 decade long prosperity. the final point, reagan deregulated and decontrolled the price of oil. reagan took out the price controls that were left over from nixon, ford and carter during the 70s. i remember james s lerks ssen ever. he said if you decontrol oil it will go to a hundred. i said it may go to a hundred, but it will go to 10 first. and guess what, the economy was booming. that was the reagan supply side free market prescription. it took a while, but he conquered inflation and started a three decade long boom. brian: reagan had substance and a lot of smart people around him, like a younger larry kudlow. who helped a guy named donald trump. can the taliban ever be trusted. shannon bream came all the way to new york for a "news duel" with me. hope she is nice. brian: president biden made the catastrophic decision to pull all-american troops out of afghanistan, leaving a humanitarian crisis in its wake. the tall baines just as brutal and bloodthirsty as ever. new report estimates this group carried out 500 revenge killing of afghans connected to the former regime. this man was captured while doing aid work in kabul. he has been free for two weeks and joins us now in studio. glad you are okay. how would you describe what you went through? >> just allies we were able to save 15,000 people. what is even more important, we evacuated 1,300 american citizens. if it wasn't for organizations like mine and other veterans helping those people get out. instead sneef it would be 1,300 americans in taliban captivity. brian: did you ever dream america would leave so many americans and allies behind? >> not in my dreams. there are approximately 100,000 allies we left behind. now everybody's attention is on ukraine. brian: the "new york times" has a study saying is the taliban really new? they are hunting down they say 500 former government workers, members of the government at some level local and national and killed them. is that 500 number gel with what you know? >> that's such a small number. i have been witness to it. we had 1,300 prisoners in the jail and they were disappearing every day. brian: have you seen american equipment being used? >> all of it. especially the armored vehicles and weapons. there is about 600,000 small arms. people say the taliban has changed. they have changed, they have become worse. they are training, they are equipping, they are preparing for the future. how everybody believes that the taliban has changed or the taliban is a different milder version of the taliban, but it's not. they have become a lot worse. in the 1990s when they came to power it was a band of people with old russian weapons. but it's a band of people who are highly trained, highly equipped, and motivated. brian: i have never seen anything so responsible in my life or read about it in my life. thanks for telling your story. we are not going to forget. the art of the con. america is obsessed with famous scammers. we get into the mind of a famous fraudster who inspired the movie "catch me if you can." >> i have a payroll check i would like to cash. >> my name is anna. she is either a rich german heiress or she is flat broke. >> when i first talked to him we had a bond. he was smart and funny. >> he posed as as socialite in an attempt to steal millions of dollars. $0,000, $30,000. >> 140,000. brian: the story of a fake heiress who swindled new york's elite. america seems fascinated with fraud because scams are running rampant in this country, like pandemic fraud. almost $80 million given to businesses through the government's paycheck production programs. $80 billion worth of fraudulent money handed out. the worst we have seen in a generation. why do people do this. my next guest may be able to help. he was depicted in the movie "catch me if you can." for committing crimes like this. >> do you concur? >> i'm sorry to have to tell you. >> i have a payroll check. >> tell me how much you are paying back? >> 1.3 million dollars. brian: frank, we remember the movie. are you surprised the american people are doing this in massive numbers and we seem to be fascinated by the process? >> a couple of things. it's 4,000 times easier to commit fraud than when i did it 50 years ago. today i believe if i was caught i would probably serve no time. so they are not actually sending people to prison for burglary, robbery, assault, murder. i don't think people are concerned about ripping somebody off and having to serve time. the reward is great but little threat of having to pay back or serve time for those crimes. brian: the fraud committed on the ppp program. they are flaunting it. look at some of these pictures. one guy bought himself a lamborghini. what is the thought process behind that? >> the problem with the unemployment insurance, the government gave $860 billion to the 50 states but said they were not liable for any fraud that may occur. so the state had to hire hundreds of people to disburse that money. no one ever checked it out. criminals realized. who has all the money? the government. who is the easiest person to steal from? the government. the government has become a target of people because they know they can get away with it. no bank pore company in america with losing $80 billion to fraud. they would go out of business. but the government continuously does that with medicare fraud, ppp fraud. unemployment fraud. i wrote that for the news wire that goes out to government agencies, and i predicted it. any time government disburses money 10% of that money goes to fraud. brian: what about values and ethics. you are talking about so-called average americans who don't have a history of criminal behavior somehow rationalizing that this is okay. where are the values and ethics?
