facing an apathetic french public . for the french election in 20 years. >> it will be up to us to work together to achieve this unity. which will enable us to live more happily in france and beat the challenges that await us in the years to come. they will certainly not be quiet. >> so, le pen last night was quick to come out after the vote was clear. she didn't exactly compete, but she acknowledged who won. she celebrated her parties much improved showing since last vote, which indeed it was. and she said, she claimed they are well-positioned for june's parliamentary elections. >> translator: this result constitutes for our french leaders, as well as european leaders, a great defiance from the french people towards them, which they can't ignore. and that, of a widely shared aspiration for big change. the french have showed their desire for a counter power. >> our other top story this hour, the trip by two top u.s. officials to ukraine where they met with volodymyr zelenskyy. ukraine's government has released this video of the secretary of state, anthony lincoln and lloyd austin being greeted by mr. zelinski. and they are the highest level u.s. officials to visit ukraine since russia's invasion began. facebook a short time ago in poland, after returning from keefe. lincoln said russia is trying to brutalize parts of ukraine still, and for more on this, let's bring suarez in. that's in ukraine, just across the polish border. >> reporter: christiane, we have had the secretary of state, anthony lincoln, as well as he said, lloyd austin, who spoke in the last hour or so, having met with volodymyr zelenskyy at the presidential palace. the meeting, we were told was productive and engaging. a meeting that lasted about three hours, speaking to the press from poland. just across the border. secretary blink in, said that russia continues to subject and continues to subjugate parts of the country. and also, brutalized parts of the country. he also praised the courage, the immense courage of the ukrainian civilians, as well as the troops in ukraine, calling him in his words, magnificent. and really praising them for pushing back against russian aggression. >> massive pressure against russia. solidarity with more than 30 countries. engaging in these efforts. it is having real results. and we are seeing that, when it comes to russia's war aims, russia is feeling, ukraine is succeeding. the bottom line is this, we don't know how the rest of this war will unfold, but we do know that the sovereign, independent ukraine will be around a lot longer than vladimir putin is on the scene. >> strong words there from to give you enough to win this fight, and pours into the negotiating table. we will have more now on macron's victory in this historic election overnight. as we said, 50% for -- 49% for his far right challenger. it was a pretty pic showing for her, but he did pull it off. jim bitterman, who joins us from paris here with a little bit of the pulse of the voter. jim. i thought i would go through a little bit of things, i know you've been through the newspapers this morning, but there were a couple of things i spotted that were kind of interesting. spot was taken after lasting selection. and in that spot paul, they discovered that about 20% of the french word disappointed with the results of the election. 20% are relieved and 18% said that they are angry. and an unbelievable 77% believe that there's going to be trouble for -- in the coming months. but, there's one number i think that maybe we should point to too and that is 44. that is mr. -- age. we have talked a lot about the fact that he is the first president to get reelectctctct 20 years. but in fact, the other presidents that were reelected, were much older than when they were reelected. in fact, -- was suffering from cancer. we did not know that. his final term was short. so mr. macron is in a better position to really come in this country and come into this country with some good ideas just because of his age. >> and jim, one can't avoid the context. many people say at least, his allies, that actually the war in ukraine and his leadership, and the stakes were so high, that actually, it did help propel him to this victory. >> well, i think that's absolutely right. getting the french believe that they like to have the vision of the world vision, and not a lot of other countries have that. the united states may have a world vision, but you don't see the same sort of thing from germany, or italy. l, ench are proud of the fact that they have a world leader for a president. i think that mr. macron has kind of demonstrated that. >> jim, thank you. just to repeat, president biden, he has congratulated president macron as well. france being our oldest ally, a key partner in addressing global challenges and he said he continues to look forward to working with president macron, not just on ukraine, but on supporting the global democracy movement, that he really has made a mission of his presidency there in the united states. so let's talk more about his victory and what it means. joining me in paris is sylvie kaufman. she is predatory had. you've talked to you before about the stakes. and just to talk to you about the spread of the margin. >> i think we can call it another french paradox, because this is a very clear, and sound victory. he managed to pull it off. it was difficult, and it was not a done deal at all. 58, 59%, really quite a good margin. i think. and yet, there's no triumphant mood. it's kind of sobering as a victory. so i think he knows that there are many, many challenges ahead. and we know, french people in the french voters know that it is not going to be an easy second term. >> so, jim was repeating and reporting some of the initial polls that have come out that -- has done a little bit of a swan dive as you say, about 17 percent say that they are still pretty angry. and that these next few weeks you know, as he gets his next cabinet together, if he fights the legislative elections, and probably lays out his mission for the next five years, it's going to be crucial how he lays out. what he chooses to focus on. >> you, so you know, there's no doubt about it. this is a divided country. this is a polarized country. i think this is something in the united states you are quite familiar with. this mood of the country. end of the society. macron's first term was really marked by crisis. it was crisis after crisis. we have the yellow vest, we had covid-19. we had the war in ukraine, for everybody which had a big impact here too, because of energy crisis and so on. there was strikes, so you know, it has been difficult as a first term. in the french society, i think is really winded in a way. it's a fragile condition. so, everybody is aware of this. there is anger, there is frustration. and macron's speech last night showed that he was aware of this. he knows. i don't think he is under much illusion about the political crisis, you know, we also have a very fragile political system, which he hoped to -- save, basically. but he has not helped to rebuild it. and that's one of his tasks ahead. this political system has to be rebuilt. the mainstream political parties have gone, they have collapsed. the socialist party, the center- right party. they are completely gone. and the far right is now kind of the new mainstream. >> and we have not talked about the far left either. because you know, i don't know whether they were many of the abstentions. but in the first round, nearly around 55% of the vote, the majority in a sense went for the two extremes. i would ask you something. you talked about devices politics. and yet, maybe not. aiming, people were worried that the pen would pull off a brexit or a trump with that kind of explosion in mainstream politics. in france did not do that. >> there are some strong lines in french politics. in the european union is one of those lines. that's quite comforting in a way. it's a fundamental belief in france that the european union has to be strengthened. and that's why -- had to soften her tone and have more moderate views and you know, she did not advocate brexit anymore. so that's one thing. another thing is, despite its fragility, and its frustrations, if you look at the behavior of the french people during the covid-19 crisis, you know, we had very strict lockdowns. everybody laughed about these forms we had to fill in everything. people just respected it. there were no riots here. we love riots. there were no riots about -- >> unlike in the united states. >> about vaccines. you know, mandatory vaccine. so you know, that's another interesting thing about the french society that this tradition of protesting. and there's definitely frustrations. the cost of leaving is an issue. and that's why i think -- scored so high, much more because of this because of any addition to her far right beliefs. i don't think there's so much sympathy for this. but, it is still society which is holding. >> and she is, let's face it, the far right did a really strong showing more than ever. >> it is a fact, and it is a worrisome fact. and i think -- is aware of this. but you know, we will have to see what the figures are when we refine figures, whether this is really a vote for the far right, or just a protest. >> very interesting. sydney kaufman, thank you so much. and now, we are going to have breaking news coverage, which h continues, but we are going g to take a break first. so there were some protests right now, angry over the french reelection results. some even shot fireworks at police, president emmanuel macron easily defeated the far right leader. he did acknowledge that there were divisions in the country. he knew that some people do not vote for him, but against her. in addition, voter turnout was low, suggesting that many were unsatisfied with both candidates. neither that the last, there were celebrations of relief. been many many -- he secured 59% of the vote. and he found the first french president to win reelection in the last 20 years. the numbers give him a second term, but not necessarily a knockout win. his opponent got 41% of the vote and as we have been saying, it is the closest fra candidate has ever gotten to winning the french presidency. now, -- is a french journalist and she is the editor of the woman's right to use -- impact. she's joining me to talk about this. let's first talk about the election results, and kind of what we have just been saying. there were some people, i hate to make a huge big deal about a little bit of protest. but, some of the after polling shows that there is still a high dissatisfaction level. and -- did acknowledge that. in his victory speech lessening. how do you see that play out? >> i think it's interesting that he did mention, because this was sort of the rare active melody, and fair to say for the president, who does have his fair share of arrogance. people are often very angry. we see it in the streets. but essentially, the country functions. and macron has maintained pretty good personal likable personality. some of our colleagues, save the ft side of cooper says he lists all the successes of the macron years, whether it's in the unemployment rate, the reformists of aspects. is clear management of not just the covid pandemic, both of the war in ukraine. all of these big crises that have happened, but have hit his presidency, and yet, perennially, the french feel dissatisfied. do you think that's just as it is, and it will always be like that? >> it's hard to know if it will always be away. i think there is a way in this country of holding your government to account, often. and often come on the streets. i don't know if that's necessarily a bad thing. but i think this is something that macron is going to have to grapple with. i know we have seen it with -- and we will see more of it, i think. it's going to be one of the many challenges that he has. >> so the -- protests started with the promise that macron had laid out of raising fuel taxes to be environmental. to try to break down the carbon and pollution. what does that mean, given that everybody raises the -- now to a program where he says he wants to concentrate on the environment. he wants to be young people's desire for a greener, safer planet. >> i think the problem with what happened with the -- is macron did not really realize how that fuel price rise was going to affect france. we do have a cost-of-living crisis here. so i think there is possibility for him to act for the environment, but has to be understanding that it's going to hit some people harder than others. you make sure that that is built into -- >> is what we have for -- who is the minister. he said the same thing, to continue policies, but to make sure that there are protections for those who can at least, who can at least withstand it. given the fact that you know, it's a clichc, but you are a women's magazine. you talk about gender issues. mary -- the first serious female candidate, she came very close to the far right candidate to winning. but with the is meant for this country and for gender issues. i think it would have been a disaster. i think -- wanted to ban that headscarf in the street. in a country where women are really at the forefront of problems with islamophobia. i think 70% of its are against women. so we are already in a very difficult environment second she was in the first female president, but i do not think it would have been a good thing for women in this country. >> so let's talk about muslim women. she thinks she is talking into some nationwide islamophobia. although she did not talk to -- and that's the center. trying to soften her image. nonetheless, her immigration policies were incredibly harsh. and, to an extent, the criticism of -- and others is that the right has determined the debate on immigration. enforced everybody towards that very hard to find. do you think that will continue? is that an important issue going forward immigration. >> i think it's going to be interesting, because the first term, he was really always at the far a couple looking over his shoulder for his reelection campaign. is not going to be reelected this time. so he really can govern, i think more freely. it remains to be seen what his real kind of feelings and policies are on this issue. >> and what about again, young people and bringing them in. i guess everybody is just really almost can't believe the fact that nearly 60%, 55 or so percent voted for the extremes, including young people, plus the abstention rate. we will have to see how that breaks down, and who was staying in imbalanced. how does one bring the young people outside, who feel as we just heard from the previous test that there's a little bit of a democracy fatigue, that nothing seems to work for them. at least, that's what they think. >> i think young people have seen that nothing has changed in longtime. i think that one thing that we could do is to reach out, to pursue a very serious environment. we consistently see that climate change is one of the most interesting changes. i think that's going to see that young people are quite jaded. after two interruptions in a row. and not much choice. and yet, the reforms in the employment. i think young people are still thinking about their retirement and that's looking pretty sketchy at the moment. pension reform is one thing that macron is definitely going to have to do this term. it looks like next generations are not going to have the same cushy retirement as other generations had. >> claris award in ukraine, and this is cnn. >> welcome back to our viewers in the united states, and all around the world. we are here, and i'm christiana -- in paris. covering the aftermath of the french election. they've become the first in the highest level officials to travel to ukraine since the conflict began. the meeting was initially scheduled for 90 minutes, but we hear lasted about three hours during a news conference last hour, in neighboring poland, antony blinken gave a stinging review of russia's brutal campaign in ukraine. >> russia continues to try to brutalize parts of the country. and the death and construction that we continue to see is horrific. but, ukrainians are standing up, they are standing strong, and they are doing that with the support that we have coordinated from literally all around the world. russia has thought, as its principal aim to totally subjugate you can commit to take away its sovereignty. to take away its independence. that has failed. >> reporter: they said they are committed to maintaining ukraine's independence and sovereignty. in the meantime, a ukraine official says that russian troops are forming an offensive strike formation from the curse on region. as moscow re-centers efforts are tried to take southern ukraine them. to that end, rush is also launching new attacks on the besieged city of marial paul. after being unable to do so on sunday. and indeed, the u.s. secretary of defense said that they are committed to helping ukraine win this fight. adding that they want to do everything to help ukraine, while they try to also lay the groundwork for any negotiation should one take place. now, here in paris, emmanuel macron in france has been the key leader of the coalition against though were in ukraine. and he is celebrating today a comfortable reelection victory. he secured 59% in sunday's runoff and he is become the first french president in 20 years to win reelection. his victory has supporters of a strong united both candidates touched on that remark. >> we have so much to do, and though were in ukraine is a reminder that we are going through tragic times when friends must speak out, show the clarity of its choices and build and strengthen all areas and we will do so. we also need, my friends, to be kind, and respectful. because our country is full of so many doubts, so many divisions. that we need to be strong, and the noble will not be left can't. >> the five years will do nothing to dispel the content that -- is held. more than ever, i will pursue my commitment to france, and the french with a determination, and the will that you know that i have. >> reporter: now, as international support came in, so it did too from the us president, joe biden, who praised the election victory of emmanuel macron, calling him one of america's oldest and most steadfast allies, and looking forward to continuing to work with macron on the war in ukraine. and on the democracy project, worldwide. joining me now, here to discuss his danielle -- she is a member of the french national assembly. and she is also a former spokesperson for -- and --. that is the party of the far left candidate -- danielle, welcome to the program. i think the name of that party is quite significant, given how much -- who is considered far left won in the first round. so how do you translate the name of your party in english? >> well, it's sort of france untamed. we are not far left, because they were far left during the first candidate. we are the left. the actual left. gathering all those people who believe in progress, who believe in equality in france. >> accept that you are far left of the traditional, social leftist party. so one of the things that many people were quite amazed by is that -- your candidate came within a couple of percentage points of actually beating le pen and facing emmanuel macron in the runoff. when you think he was not able to cobble together a coalition with other members of the left to actually do that? >> i think we managed pretty well. when you consider that we have the entire system against us. considering that emmanuel macron had been helping the far right actually getting to the second that he said that, he was helping marine le pen. because he knew that facing marine le pen would help him with the winning of the second election. so we -- nobody expected us to get such a result. and now, that's the third round of the presidential election. we set it, we are managing to get together. we have agreed with the communist party, and we will manage to get this alliance. we are the third block insight, on the political landscape now, and the idea is to get --, the prime minister, because the majority of the people don't want emmanuel macron to have the majority of the parliamentary election. >> this interesting. tell us about the parliamentary elections you are already currently a member. and you are running for your reelection. you say you want jean-luc -- marine le pen says she is going to rally her national party, which is far right, to be the opposition in parliament. >> the thing is, we proved, during the past five years, that we are the opposition. marine le pen was elected. she was invisible. she did not do anything. she did not oppose any of the antisocial, antidemocratic policies that mr. -- elected. and even though it were a small group, we proved to millions of people. enough, i think that's the reason why so many people voted for -- because we were vocal about our opposition. and we were also able to show that we had connected with the need of the people. and now, we are in the process, as i said, to get together. with other forces, in order to get the majority. and i think that people realize that we need to have a strong, parliamentary branch in a system that is very unbalanced. the -- system are putting the president as like the presidential monarch. and the french people don't like montague that much. so we went to do that if possible. and we proved it with the screw. and now, it's possible actually to prevent mr. emmanuel macron to actually out power the majority in the national -- >> how do you think that would help people? would it be like gridlock, if you have two sanction post visions? or what is his aim if his party does get a big enough victory in the assembly in order for him to be the prime minister? we're well, we aim to actually implement our platform. which was about facing the custom living and getting the necessary policies in order to face climate change, for instance, those are the issues the people are really sensitive. closer to be able to get the majority of the people they like to hang out. the retirement age. it would be already there 25% of the poorest people are dead by the time that they are supposed to get retirement. so, there are many things that we can actually do. when it was to strengthen our country, which is very divided. with a lot of resistance, there still a lot of -- against the policies. and, we need to reunite, and start reenacting our proud form. to realign the country. >> reuniting is really an important thing, which he has also made his mission. we will see danielle -- member of the national assembly, thank you so much for joining us. our breaking news coverage continues, after this shorort break. two
