pete, what do we know about at&t's decision? >> reporter: this is a huge development from at&t. it along with verizon is really behind the 5g push which is set to roll out tomorrow across the country far and wide, but issue here is that there are really serious aviation safety concerns that have been brought up by air. . they say the problem will lead to thousands of cancellations and delays and diverted flights. the big issue is with the 5g radio spectrum. it is so close, airlines say to radar altimeters, to what they use, a highly sensitive instrument that pilots use in critical phases of flight t.sends a radio beam down to the ground and bounces back up to the airplane to give them a hyper accurate reading of how close they are to the ground. airlines say they need this, especially in low visibility conditions. on a day like yesterday there, would have been 1,100 delays and diversions if this does cause errors, if this 5g system does cause errors with the radar altimeters. now at&t has agreed to stop the rollout near certain airports. we don't know for how long and we also don't know which airports. in a statement though, at&t calls out faa and the aviation industry for not acting on this fast enough. this was already delayed once. now this is coming at the 11th hour. in a statement at&t says the faa and the aviation industry did not utilize two years they had to responsibly plan for this deployment, so a lot of frustration from the telecom industry against the aviation industry. it's been a big back and forth here. we know that the white house interceded today. there were meeting today between the biden administration, the department of transportation, faa, fcc, aviation groups, electronics manufacturers as well, and we know those all centered on trying to build a buffer zone like what at&t is describing here keeping those towers either turned off or at a lower power near the critical moments right before an airplane meets the runway, so this is a pretty big development on this coming at a very late stage with this deployment only around the corner. ana? >> mary, obviously other countries have already figured out how to handle this situation, countries like japan, for example, already have 5g, so why are we here right now? shouldn't this all have been dealt with a while ago? >> absolutely it should have been dealt with a while ago. i like to describe this as the overnight emergency that was two decades in the making. you know, the problem is at several points along the way, airlines, boeing, others did sound the alarm. most particularly the alarm bells were sounding as early as 2018 exactly on this subject, but the department of transportation, the fcc were in a standoff. they were back and forth with each oh, but at the critical moment, the fcc said it didn't have in its records the federal aviation administration objections. they blamed it on a clerical error, but, you know, this has been known for some time, and as pete correctly, you know, laid this out for everybody but in layman's terms what, could be compromised is the aircraft knowing its altitude, how high is up, and so this affects not only air traffic separation, instrument landings, also one of the most important safety features we have which is ground proximity warring, how close are you to terrain or other obstacles, so it's a big deal. we never should have been put in this last-minute position, and, remember, it was the united states government that auctioned off this 5g spectrum back in 2020, so now for the government to say oh, well, wait a minute, private industry, have you to wait. the government caused this problem. >> mary, do you see a quick fix here? >> well, actually, a quick fix 20 years in the making. yes. what the federal aviation administration has to do is evaluate the systems and the aircraft to make sure that they are properly shielded from interference transmissions. just like your old radio dial. if you're trying to tune in 400 and the -- and you know 59gy spectrum from the telephone is using 3.7, you did get interference. now what the faa has to do is make sure that the aircraft equipment and the federal aviation administration equipment can properly screen out close but not exact signals, and that should solve the problem. france dealt with this by just simply excluding many so of the 5g neither airports but the reason it's so much worse in the united states is we have, you know, thousands more airports, and many times more the air traffic. in japan they have a few major airport to deal with. in our country we have thousands. >> and, pete, i know i looked at my phone as soon as i saw this news and i saw i have 5g service right now so a lot of people may be wondering i thought we already got 5g. how does this, if at all, impact our current communications in stalled service? >> a bit of a sleight of hand by communications companies which has been marketing 5g though it's not necessarily out just yes. you know, this is such a huge rollout that they have about talking about for such a long time, and the aviation industry, i went to see how they test all of this, and you can see the bleed-through that mary talks about between the frequencies used for 5g, the c-band spectrum what they call it and the frequencies used for the radar altimeters. there's really serious concern here even thought the telecom industry says, y, yes, this has about rolled out in a lot of different places and that the fears are really unfounded, that there haven't been any incidents or accidents linked to 5g in the past, especially in the other places of the world, that the u.s. is prepared for this, that this can happen safely, so there are really two sides to this argument here. what it's coming down to though is this argument playing out at the 11th hour. we'll see exactly what happens, and for how long this delay is for, by the way. this was already delayed two weeks. we'll see if verizon gloms on to this as well. a lot of 5gers to set to turn on tomorrow. we haven't heard boo from them yet. thank you both very much. gas prices are creeping back up. a troubling sign for drivers and president biden as analysts predict oil prices will keep spiking. cnn business reporter matt egan will join us. president biden, we all remember, took action to lower gas prices back in december. he tapped the strategic petroleum reserve. gas prices went down a couple of cents a gallon. maybe this was around thanksgiving. but this didn't last long, why? >> it doesn't last long at all and that's because despite all the hype around the announcement this was never going to solve the underlying issue. it was always going to be more than a band-aid than an actual game changer. while the president did announce the release of 50 billion barrels from the strategic only reserve. keep in mind that's only 12 hours of world supplies, and so oil prices did fall around 10% leading up to the president's announcement and then they kept falling because of omicron. they have since fully recovered those losses. the hit from omicron to the oil market in terms of demand was less than expected and so we've seen gas prices come back up. today the average is at 3.31 a gallon. only 11 cents below the peak and nearly a dollar more than a year ago. ana, the high cost of living is clearly creating a lot of anxiety among americans, and the fact that gas prices are starting to head back up is only going to make that matter worse. >> just a quick follow-up on gas prices specifically. you have goldman sachs now saying oil could jump to $100 a barrel this year so that doesn't bode well for gas prices. what more can the biden administration do? >> well, presidents have very limited options here. there will some ideas being bandied about. they all have drawbacks. up white house official told me that tools continue to remain on the table for us to address prices. this is something that the administration is continuing to watch and monitor very closely. so what are those tools? well, biden could take another swing at this by releasing more barrels from the oil reserve but the fact that we're talking about two months after the first attempt shows how limited this is and biden could ban oil exports but we're told that that would backfire because oil is a globally traded commodity and prices are set by market. maybe it you could get opec and its allies to pump more oil but the united states and saudi arabia don't have great relations right now, and so far the diplomacy has not really panned out. so aina, there really are no easy answers here. >> it's not just gas we're seeing going up. orange juice costs run. inflation is hitting luxury items like peloton but what's interesting is the reasons behind the price hikes vari. so it's not a one-size-fits-all solution to get inflation under control. >> reporter: definitely not a one sides fits all solution because there are a lot of different factors. a lot is related to covid. let's think about peloton. they cited supply chain issues behind their decision to raise prices. peloton's bike which was around $1,500 will go for $1,p 50 and peloton's tread mail is going from 2,500 to $2,850. and orange juice was already at multi-year highs because of covid and now they are going even higher and forecasters are trimming their expectations for florida's harvest. the usd a is now calling for the smallest florida orange harvest since the 1940s and they are blaming bad weather overseas and this disease known assisi truss greening that's spoiling the crop. ana, these are two more examples of the cost of living of going up. >> like when it rains, it pours. the markets down 600 points plus. what's behind the drop? >> the plan to fight inflation. the fact that the fed is removing the easy money punch bowl that has been juicing the stock market during the whole pandemic. back in march of 2020 the fed promised to buy-120 billion bonds each month which essentially forced investors to bet on stocks, but now they are reversing this because they need to cool off inflation. they have to catch up to inflation, and so that has sent the bond market, we've seen the ten-year treasury yields climb today to two-year high. the higher that treasury yields go the more thunder they will steal from the stock market. ana, there shows after monster gains in 2020 and 2021 the ride in the stock market will be a bit rougher in 2022. >> moments ago the white house warned russia could launch an attack on ukraine at any point, and the biden administration is weighing a major step to deter russia from invading. cnn has learned the white house is considering beefing up ukraine's military by potentially helping to provide more weapons and anti-aircraft system in the case of a potential inflation. gamt is once again ramping up. secretary of state antony blinken will meet with his russian counterpart in kiev this week. joining us now is white house reporter natasha bertrand and we have senior national correspondent matthew chance with us in ukraine. natasha, tell us more about this potential military boost and why the biden administration is considering this step. >> reporter: yeah. ana, what we're seeing is kind of a shift in mentality by the biden administration from a focus pry marivel on deterring a russian invasion to actually supporting ukranian forces in the event that russia does invade and then implements kind of a long-term occupation of the country, so what we're hearing is that the administration has started weighing options to provide support to ukranian forces to push back on that occupation in order to allow them to sustain a longer-term resistance to russian forces being in that country and that including additional items like air defense systems and those would come from nato allies and special ops forces are rotating in and out of ukraine, the idea that maybe they can provide support and training as well as other agencies like the cia, so there's kind of a shift happening here and pessimism whereby the administration sees it as more likely than not that russia nainsaid. jen sakey saying that it's. >> how is ukraine prepping for a possible invasion? >> well, i mean, they are playing it quite cool, if i can put it that way. we're not seeing any additional deployments towards the -- towards the rebel-controlled areas or with the border with russia in the east of the country where there's that active war zone. they are calling up reservists or civilian volunteers and offering them classroom training as well as battlefield training are, but, you know, one of the criticisms that's been leveled at the government here is they are perhaps not doing enough to prepare for what could be, you know, a sort of extension crisis, a massive russian invasion that would -- on the other hand, it's unclear they it there's been another potential front opening in the conflict with russia and neighboring belarus deciding that they are going to stage joint military drills so the southern border of belarus, if you follow me, is actually the northern border of ukraine so it seems that russian forces, rebels, belarussian forces are now kind of surrounding ukraine. >> reporter: matthew, thank you for that real imrecall and thanks tore sharing in this ongoing geopolitical battle. >> here to break it all down is ian bremer. the fact that the white house is weighing new options, thinking about sending more arms to ukraine, ammunition, mortars, anti-take mifshlgs et cetera, is this then an expected piece of the deterrent straptgy? does it signal an invasion is imminent? what's your read? >> no, it signals that they are very concerned about the possibility of an invasion and they don't know what putin is going to do, and i'm not sure that putin knows what he's going to do. certainly the people you talk to, they are close to the russian president saying they haven't made up hays mind yes and -- in terms of the soiber attacks we saw onied, the. reduction from the embassy is keys. in. they are trying to put more pressure on the americans to get some support for our demands that the russian government has been making. they say the status quo on ukraine is unacceptable and they want the americans to engage with them. there has been high devil. >> the german chancellor expects are wrsh, but do you so any reason for optimism? >> the biggest reason for optimism is when president met with president putin back in june, the u.s. set that agenda and the one top priority that the president had for russia was to stop the attacks, cyber attacks, by russian criminal syndicates against american critical infrastructure, right after the colonial pipeline hit, and biden said that he would give putin and the russians a few months to do that, but had expected it would get done or there would be escalation. now the kremlin has indeed reined in those organizations, we haven't seen the attacks against the critical infrastructure and on friday, literally the day that ukranian -- that the ukranian government faced attacks from russia on the cyber side, the russian security forced announced that they had arrested 14 members of this cyber gang and that they had actually put an end to the operations of that organization, so this is clearly the --ness putin saying, well, mr. president, when you made a demand we made good on it. it's very clear that the russian president is sending a message to the americans that he would at least like to consider an off-ramp to the escalation that we're seeing and that should make us at the very least recognize that there is no inevitability about an invasion of ukraine. >> and so we know that the u.s. secretary of state will be meeting with his russian counterpart this week and if diplomacy ultimately fails and putin does invade. we know major hanks inningses but what do you think could be there for u.s. and nato? >> nothing. .has said the u.s. would not come to defend if the russians were to attack. nothing we'd ever risk world war iii over. biden ensures that the russian government understands that, so the risk of escalation between these two major nuclear powers is fairly limited. on the other hand, there would be military response. you would probably see a permanent base -- a deployment of range nuclear weapons and troops up to the russian border and you would see more an there's plenty of things that the russians would do if there was a full invasion of ukraine, and there would also be significant costs to the russians just in terms of occupying a territory that is fundamentally hostile towards russia, and this would not be popular on the ground in russia so there's a lot of reasons why putin should be thinking twice about a maximum military invasion, and the fact that putin has warned the americans that he would consider military and technical responses doesn't mean that that has to be a full invasion of ukraine. there are many other things that the russians could do that are smaller in terms of escalation, like, for example, sending tanks into the okay piled donbas where putin accuses the ukranians of committing genocide against russian passport holders. he could do things like that that would not necessarily trip the extraordinary escalation from the u.s. and nato. >> but it does emphasize how complicated and dynamic this situation is. so great to have you with us, and your expertise is very much appreciated. thanks for taking the time. covid cases are dropping along the east coast. sadly in other parts of the country icu beds are in short supply. and a pro-trump candidate who loves the big lie is running to the top official in a critical state. doney o'sullivan has that story. and what you need to know about the massive asteroid that's about to whiz by planet earth. real cowboys get customized car insurance with liberty mutual, so we only pay for what we need. -hey tex, -wooo. can someone else get a turn? >> nick violence yeah, thank you. just into the cnn newsroom, the website where you can order free covid-19 at-home tests from the government is up and running. the site was quietly launched today. we just checked. it does work. go to www..covidtests.gov, and that's where can you order your tests. each household can order a maximum of four tests to be shipped directly to your home. joining us now is dr. paul offiat, director of the vaccine education center at children's hospital of philadelphia. he's also a member of the fda vaccine advisory committee. doctor, given just how many people have been infected now with this omicron wave plus the believes, plus more vaccinations, the silver running that this virus runs low on fuel. the vast majority esentially have some immunities so we could go from a pandemic to an endemic phase but we're hearing dr. fauci say hold on that. remains an open question if that's where we're approaching now. how do you see it and spain how we eventually get there. >> so, if you look at last winter when we didn't have much population immunity, right. december, january, very few people were immunized, far fewer people had been naturally infected. nonetheless when we got to sort mid-february you clearly saw a decline in hospitalizations and clearly saw a decline in the number of cars and covid is a winter virus, then it came down, summer, fall and then it came and now we're where we were last year but we're better off. instead of having 4,000 deaths, 4,500 deaths, we have 1,500 deaths a day, 2,000 deaths a day and you would expect that what happened last winter that by the time we hit no later than mid-february we'll see a decline and it will come down again and we'll see where we are next win thor when there's more population immunity. it seems the answer is obvious to how to get out of it. we're not going to boost our way out of this pandemic or test our way out of this pandemic. can only vaccinate and until we get the 80 million or so people to not get at vaccine we'll be in trouble and most of the people -- the group that's least likely to be vaccinated are people under 30 so we need to get young people vaccinated. >> there has been some confusion over sort of those who are supposed to be guiding us through this pandemic and what's happening in terms of the administration's messaging, former deputy fda commissioner dr. joshua sharpstein has a new op-ed detailing how the cdc and fda can work better together and also in communicating with the american public, and one example is on child vaccines. he writes this. it's astonishing that vaccine manufacturers have become the leading source for updates at regular cdc briefings, the fda staff could explain the progress of key studies on vaccines for children under 5. there's no justification for keeping such information confidential. your response? >> no, i a grow with that to some extent. it feels like at times the pharmaceutical companies have become public health agencies because they are telling us when the next variant-specific vaccine is going to come out. what we would like to see and we do have the people in place to do that, you want to see most of the messaging coming out of the cdc, as least i would. look back at 2009 during the influenza pandemic, the wine flu pandemic, richard besser, the head of the cdc, he was out there in front of the public answering questions from the media every other day and it was comforting. rochelle with a lenczycki is superb at what she does, a brilliant person, great researcher, educator and clinician, and most of the data coming out that we care about meaning do the vaccines protect against omicron, to what extent and how long do you shed infectious virus, that all comes from the cdc so would i like to see dr. walensky out there every other day helping direct messaging. she's the perfect person to do it. >> let's talk about how to keep schools open. so much discussion lately and yet today there's still more than 1,800 schools nationwide not currently offering in-person learning but here's the harm. according to a new report out today that analyzed dozens of studies from 11 different countries when schools closed distress, anxiety and bad health behaviors like more screen time, less physical activity, it all happens, so what's the message here for school leaders? >> we all agree children should go back to school. they have probably been most hurt in lack of socialization and activities more than any other group and off-site learning is far less effective than on site learning so we all agree with that. nonetheless we don't vaccinate our children. right. i mean, 50% of 12 to 15-year-olds aren't vaccinated. 0% of 5 to 11-year-olds aren't vaccinated. this is the best thing to do to keep our children safe. we want to keep them safe in school. vaccines are the thing to do that and yet we choose not vaccinate our children. i just don't understand it. >> real quickly a follow to that. i've heard from parents who are hesitant, who cite some of the data. in fact, we have the american academy of pediatrics latest statistics show among states that are reporting, .00% and .02% of all child covid-19 cases have resulted in death so it's such a slim majority. can you explain to those parents who see numbers like this and explain why they should still choose to vaccinate their children. >> it's a common virus, so even a small percentage of something that's common can result in a lot of hospitalations and deaths. you know, it's not just about deaths. it's hospitalations, icu admissions. first of all about, 1,000 children less than 18 years of age died. that's certainly far more than we would see every year from measles or influenza or chicken pox for which we also have vaccines. this vaccine has been out in millions and millions of children. you know its safety parole file. you know its efficacy profile. there's no more secrets anymore with these vaccines so let's get our kids vaccinated. >> doctor, great to have you here. thanks for all that you do and for being here with us. senator kirsten sinema is blocking her party's voting rights legislation but her state could be where they need it the most. a look at two trump-backed republicans running to run elections in sinema's home state of arizona. it's still the eat fresh refresh™ and subway's refreshing everything like the new baja turkey avocado with smashed avocado, oven-roasted turkey, and baja chipotle sauce. it's three great things together. wait! who else is known for nailing threes? take a look at this. these are satellite images taken before and after the eruption. entire communities are now completely covered in this thick blanket of volcanic dust, and some buildings have collapsed. tonga's prime minister says that in addition to massive ash clouds, some areas were hit by 15-meter tsunami waves, wiping out every single home on at least one island. the full extent of the crisis, though, is still unknown. all of this ash is preventing planes from landing at the capital's airport. and the island's key communication cable has been severed, essentially cutting off tonga from the outside world. scientists say the eruption is a once in a millennium event so massive, in fact, that super sonic air pressure waves could be seen from space and were felt as far away as the uk. remarkably, just three deaths have been reported so far. but that number could still grow as aid workers gain access to the island. nasa is calling it a potentially hazardous asteroid. it is
