live from cnn center, this is "cnn newsroom" with john vause. >> hello, everyone. welcome to our viewers in the united states joining us here on cnn international. around the world, the advice is mostly the same, the safest place to see in the new year will be at home surrounded by a small number of people. in many cities, public celebrations have been canceled, scaled back or tougher guidelines. hopes of partying like it was 2019 have been dashed with a surge in covid infections. despite a record daily count of 74,000 infections in new york state, the traditional ball drop in new york city still scheduled, but attendance capped at 15,000, and viewing areas will be off-limits until 3:00 p.m. the seven-day average of global infections is 1.2 million, the highest ever since the pandemic began. average daily cases in the u.s. have set a record for the third straight day. more than 355,000 on thursday. and children once thought to be immune from the worst of the coronavirus, now being admitted to hospital in the u.s. at a record rate, close to 400 every day. and right now, at least ten u.s. states and the district of columbia are reporting some of the highest patient numbers of the pandemic, and the peak of the omicron wave is yet to come. cnn's tom foreman reports from washington. >> reporter: with the pandemic clocking unprecedented numbers of infections, the fda expected to okay booster shots of the pfizer vaccine soon for 12 to 15-year-olds. the cdc has intensified its warning against cruise ship travel amid dozens of outbreaks. and health officials are advising caution on shore, too. >> i would not eat in an restaurant now without a mask. i would not go into a bar. if you go into a bar now, you are likely to get covid, whether you're vaccinated or not. if you're unvaccinated and you go into a war, you will come out infected. >> reporter: as predicted, the surge is not hitting everyone equally. >> if you are unvaccinated, you are ten times more likely to be a fatality. what we're hearing from hospitals across the nation, this is very consistent, is that the vast majority of the children being admitted are unvaccinated. >> reporter: so many people are being affected, many states are reporting near record highs. maryland hospital officials are calling for a limited emergency declaration. in new york city, the fire department has so many out sick, they are reminding people to call 911 only in true emergencies. and everywhere, the drumbeat for more testing is growing louder, especially with schools reopening next week. >> testing, testing, testing, testing all the time. so this is what we have to do, and you're see thing in new york and in d.c., you're seeing this in as many places as we can. >> reporter: in the meantime, two new reports indicate a booster shot of the johnson & johnson vaccine significantly lowers the risk of severe illness from the omicron variant. and health officials are pleading no matter which vaccine you choose, make sure you follow through with all the recommended doses and then get a booster, too. >> make sure you get vaccinated and get your booster dose. >> reporter: many health experts say the majority of those who received their vaccinations are the reason there aren't more hospitalizations during this surge. and they've been relatively low. but there is still plenty of them, and that's a big burden on hospital staffs everywhere that have been fighting this pandemic for a very long time. tom foreman, cnn, washington. >> dr. rodriguez is a board certified viral researcher. good to see you. >> thank you, john. >> let's start with covid and kids. in the united states, the secretary for health and human services said a record number of children are being infected and being treated in hospital. here he is. >> we thought our kids were safe because they didn't seem to be catching the infection the same way. today, i think you're hearing the news, more and more of our children are not only contracting covid, but they're being hospitalized. this stuff is real. >> so is it real enough now to authorize booster shots for kids 5 and older, as well as those 12 to 15? >> absolutely it is. i think we need to stop differentiating between older humans and younger humans. the virus dozen differentiate. it goes after humans. so anybody that has the right dna for the virus to attack will be attacked. therefore, everybody in the world, as far as i'm concerned, should eventually be vaccinated. we're just waiting to make sure that the vaccines are safe. but in essence, my answer to your question is, yes. >> we know that new years celebrations are being scaled back, but in new york city, the ball drop will happen but there are upgrated guidelines. unvaccinated minors under the age of 5 must be accompanied by a vaccinated adult to enter the event. the coronavirus avoids unvaccinated toddlers if there is a vaccinated parent? what is the sense to this? >> it's ridiculous. sometimes you think who the heck came one that rule? we're just sort of kowtowing to the lowest common denominator and trying to please everybody and we're helping nobody. so any parent who has a young child not vaccinated should not go into such a large group of people. >> at this point, should these celebrations be canceled? >> you know, in my opinion, yes. i mean, have we not learned a lesson over the last two years? every time we try to make an exception, every time we try to soften up the rules, we get bitten. we did it in july, when we -- the cdc prematurely said it was all right to take your mask off. there has to be a period of no progression of infections for us to feel safe. so yes, i do think that those large celebrations should be canceled at this point. >> we know that health officials in south africa confirming the worst of the omicron wave is over and confirming it was less severe than delta and was over in a shorter period of time. most people hear that and not a lot else. but it's important to listen to what you're about to hear. listen. >> an all-time peak for hospitalizations and half of them are children under 5. >> i'll be honest, it's unlike anything we have seen, even at the peak of the prior surges of covid. what we're experiencing right now is an absolute overwhelming of the emergency departments throughout the washington, d.c. area. >> what we're seeing in the hospital today is the same thing we have seen at the beginning of every single surge. so to hear that omicron is different and is not causing immense illness in people is not what we're seeing on the ground. >> that's just a small sample of what's happening across this country. we're sick and tired of being sick and tired, but we can't ignore the virus. how do you convince people that this is, in fact, serious? >> well, john, i used to have sort of some humor and say some people aren't going to believe it until they have to jump over dead bodies to get to the store. that's still hyperbole, but we're not far from that. this omicron may be milder, but ten times more people are getting infected. therefore, ten times more people are probably going to be going to the hospital. quite honestly, i sit here tonight with you, kind of hopeless and dejected and in shock for the first time in a long time. when i found out that yesterday there were almost 500,000 new cases in the united states, far surpassing anything. when you see the graphs, they're going straight up like a rocket. i think soon we will be seeing millions of people getting infected on a daily basis. the shame of it is, we have, at our disposal, something that can prevent that very quickly, and those are vaccines. due to politics or stubbornness or whatever, we're not taking advantage of that. and hopefully, it won't happen. but when history is written, they will be laughing saying, you know what? they had the cure and the treatment at their fingertips and they didn't use it. and that is a deadly shame. >> yet, at the very least. dr. rodriguez, thank you so much. all the best in the new year. >> thank you. likewise. one hard learned lesson of the pandemic has been the crucial need to stockpile ppe. masks, gloves, other personal protective equipment were in short supply when the pandemic began. for years, the u.s. has relied on cheap manufacturers in other countries. but that could soon be about to change. >> reporter: literally hot off the production line. the very firsthand mold being dip, the result, a reliable stream of medical grade gloves made in america. this is a big deal, because for decades, the u.s. has imported these gloves from cheap suppliers, almost entirely in asia. it took a pandemic to change that. businessman dilan radigan says he felt compelled to act. >> we just watched hundreds of thousands, more than 500,000 americans die, and many of them for no reason. i think bad decisions have been made in american manufacturing, specifically for critical assets like class one medical devices. the decision has been made to make sure that never happens again. >> reporter: when the pandemic exploded, a cnn investigation found counterfeit, substandard or even used medical gloves being imported to the u.s. by the tens of millions. prepandemic, there was only one glove producer in the u.s., in fayette, alabama. but the company struggled to even get the u.s. government to buy the gloves because they cost twice the price. 10% of the world's medical gloves are made in china, 20% in thailand, and 65% in malaysia, where the u.s. government lifted an import ban after finding evidence of forced labor earlier this year. how do you compete with slave labor? >> the technology allows me to do it in a way that i can compete with even the dirtiest user of slave labor. you want to be the customer of a slave labor company? i don't. you could have never done this 30 years ago, because the technology didn't exist. >> reporter: he's now ceo of the u.s. medical glove company, committed to paying workers $25 an hour, and free on site child care. there are about 100 of them now assembling new lines using all american-made parts. >> and that is a critical distinction between this company and others. >> reporter: the start-up, housed in a former caterpillar factory, is backed by a $63 million advance purchase order from the u.s. government. all old, washington is 13spendi $1.7 billion to help american companies manufacture ppe at home. another american startup, usa gloves outside houston, was created by former importers who found it almost impossible to buy gloves from abroad. they don't have any government investment yet, but once the machines are up and running next month, they hope to turn a profit from private sales, even with higher prices than asian brands. >> hospitals and clinics and even end users are willing to pay that slight premium. so we're prepared for a future pandemic. >> reporter: experts say it is saenld for the u.s. to make more ppe at home. the question is -- >> if people are willing to pay the peopleup in the medium term, or is this just a very short term memory and people will go back to thinking who is my lowest cost supplier? >> reporter: that may be what determines the success or failure of these new enterprises. whether they're expensive experiments or the beginning of a new era that reduces america's dependance of factories on the other side of the world. two wildfires in colorado have destroyed hundreds of homes and forced tens of thousands to flee. patients in two hospitals have been evacuated. the flames have burned 1600 acres, driven by dry air and hurricane force gusts. so clearly, this is an emergency in colorado which normally doesn't happen this time of year. >> exactly right, john. we've been following wildfires in colorado oerve ver the summe. you don't expect to see scenes like this in december, but an incredible number of factors came together. hundreds of homes destroyed, people evacuated, and it should get a little better soon. as far as there will be any more fire. but earlier today, we were watching this on our radar and able to see the smoke on the radar. normally we look at radar to see where there are storms. when you see yellows and greens, that will let you know it's raining. this is the smoke and you can see how widespread the smoke was expanding across the area. the marshall fire, 1600 acres. zero percent contained as of this point. we're hoping it gets some containment. the winds continue to blow. they just ended a wind advisory. all of this came together because of the very dry conditions. denver just recorded their latest snowfall earlier this month. the entire state has been in drought. and the areas of red that you see here, john, these are the areas that have been in the highest levels. three out of five level -- or four out of five level of drought. so that was kindling for this to occur. then you had the high winds. winds howling out of the rocky mountains, down into the foothills. 115-mile-per-hour wind gust, that's equivalent of a category 3 hurricane. will there be more wind? keep your eye on the areas of red. they will diminish overnight. but on the heels of the winds dying down, we also have snow. that might help put out some of the fire, but it's going to cause a recovery to be really tricky. lots of winter weather alerts across the rockies. this storm system is going to move very quickly. it will see the snow by tomorrow afternoon. and then we've got some severe weather, too, that could be developing in parts of the south. so a big mess out in the west. >> absolutely. gene, thank you. a truck driver sentenced to 110 years in prison for his role in the death of four people in a vehicle crash has had that sentence reduced by 100 years. the governor of colorado ordering him to be released in ten years. the truck driver was found guilty on multiple charges after a 2019 accident in a vehicle pileup. he told investigators the brakes of his tractor trailer failed while traveling 85 miles per h hour. millions signed a petition asking the governor for this sentence reduction. joe biden and vladamir putin had a lengthy phone call just weeks before both sides hold talks in geneva to solve the crisis over ukraine. those details just ahead. people everywhere living with type 2 diabetes are waking up to what's possible... with rybelsus®. the majority of people taking rybelsus® lowered their blood sugar and reached an a1c of less than 7. rybelsus® isn't for people with type 1 diabetes. don't take rybelsus® if you or your family ever had medullary thyroid cancer or have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, or if allergic to it. stop rybelsus® and get medical help right away if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, e tell your provider about vision problems or changes. taking rybelsus® with a sulfonylurea or insulin increases low blood sugar risk. side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may lead to dehydration, which may worsen kidney problems. wake up to the possibility of lower a1c with rybelsus®. you may pay as little as $10 for up to a 3-month prescription. ask your healthcare provider about rybelsus® today. the kremlin says it's satisfied with thursday's conversation between vladamir putin and joe biden. the white house says it was a serious and substantive conversation. during the phone call, joe biden again warned of dire economic consequences if russia invades ukraine. vladamir putin fired back saying that would be a colossal mistake. jeremy diamond has the latest. >> reporter: for the second time in a matter of weeks, joe biden and russian president vladamir putin getting on the phone together for a one on one conversation, focused particularly on those rising tensions between russia and ukraine. the prospect, of course, of a war between those two countries looming over the 50-minute conversation between the two leaders that took place on thursday. joe biden phoning in from his wilmington, delaware home. an administration official telling us the tone of the conversation was substantive and serious. and the white house press secretary jen psaki making clear that joe biden urged russia to deescalate tensions with ukraine, making clear that the united states and allies and partner also respond decisively if russia invades ukraine, saying joe biden reiterated that progress in these dialogues can occur only in an environment of deescalation rather than escalation. ultimately, joe biden's main object ticive here in this call to make sure the stark choice that vladamir putin faces. that is to say if he moves forward with this invasion, the u.s. will impose serious costs. significant, economic, and financial sanctions and a stepped up nato military presence and increased u.s. assistance to allies at russia's doorstep. on the other hand, the u.s. making clear and the president doing so in this conversation that the u.s. is committed to meaningful diplomacy. talks are set to take place between u.s. and russian officials beginning january 10. and lastly, bone thing that official was not able to say is what vladamir putin's intentions were following this call. instead, the u.s. instead of trying to judge his intention, focused on russian action. we have seen stepped up u.s. surveillance missions, two u.s. spy planes flying over even ukraine in just a matter of days. jeremy diamond, cnn, delaware. from brazil, 2021 has been a devastating year. the covid pandemic left more than 600,000 dead. parts of the amazon have been ravaged by wildfires. and many blame the brazilian president for both. many are now hoping that 2022 will be the year of reckoning for him. live from cnn center, this is "cnn newsroom" with john vause. >> hello, everyone. welcome to our viewers in the united states joining us here on cnn international. around the world, the advice is mostly the same, the safest place to see in the new year will be at home surrounded by a small number of people. in many cities, public celebrations have been canceled, scaled back or tougher guidelines. hopes of partying like it was 2019 have been dashed with a surge in covid infections. despite a record daily count of 74,000 infections in new york state, the traditional ball drop in new york city still scheduled, but attendance capped at 15,000, and viewing areas will be off-limits until 3:00 p.m. the seven-day average of global infections is 1.2 million, the highest ever since the pandemic began. average daily cases in the u.s. have set a record for the third straight day. more than 355,000 on thursday. and children once thought to be immune from the worst of the coronavirus, now being admitted to hospital in the u.s. at a record rate, close to 400 every day. and right now, at least ten u.s. states and the district of columbia are reporting some of the highest patient numbers of the pandemic, and the peak of the omicron wave is yet to come. cnn's tom foreman reports from washington. >> reporter: with the pandemic clocking unprecedented numbers of infections, the fda expected to okay booster shots of the pfizer vaccine soon for 12 to 15-year-olds. the cdc has intensified its warning against cruise ship travel amid dozens of outbreaks. and health officials are advising caution on shore, too. >> i would not eat in an restaurant now without a mask. i would not go into a bar. if you go into a bar now, you are likely to get covid, whether you're vaccinated or not. if you're unvaccinated and you go into a war, you will come out infected. >> reporter: as predicted, the surge is not hitting everyone equally. >> if you are unvaccinated, you are ten times more likely to be a fatality. what we're hearing from hospitals across the nation, this is very consistent, is that the vast majority of the children being admitted are unvaccinated. >> reporter: so many people are being affected, many states are reporting near record highs. maryland hospital officials are calling for a limited emergency declaration. in new york city, the fire department has so many out sick, they are reminding people to call 911 only in true emergencies. and everywhere, the drumbeat for more testing is growing louder, especially with schools reopening next week. >> testing, testing, testing, testing all the time. so this is what we have to do, and you're see thing in new york and in d.c., you're seeing this in as many places as we can. >> reporter: in the meantime, two new reports indicate a booster shot of the johnson & johnson vaccine significantly lowers the risk of severe illness from the omicron variant. and health officials are pleading no matter which vaccine you choose, make sure you follow through with all the recommended doses and then get a booster, too. >> make sure you get vaccinated and get your booster dose. >> reporter: many health experts say the majority of those who received their vaccinations are the reason there aren't more hospitalizations during this surge. and they've been relatively low. but there is still plenty of them, and that's a big burden on hospital staffs everywhere that have been fighting this pandemic for a very long time. tom foreman, cnn, washington. >> dr. rodriguez is a board certified viral researcher. good to see you. >> thank you, john. >> let's start with covid and kids. in the united states, the secretary for health and human services said a record number of children are being infected and being treated in hospital. here he is. >> we thought our kids were safe because they didn't seem to be catching the infection the same way. today, i think you're hearing the news, more and more of our children are not only contracting covid, but they're being hospitalized. this stuff is real. >> so is it real enough now to authorize booster shots for kids 5 and older, as well as those 12 to 15? >> absolutely it is. i think we need to stop differentiating between older humans and younger humans. the virus dozen differentiate. it goes after humans. so anybody that has the right dna for the virus to attack will be attacked. therefore, everybody in the world, as far as i'm concerned, should eventually be vaccinated. we're just waiting to make sure that the vaccines are safe. but in essence, my answer to your question is, yes. >> we know that new years celebrations are being scaled back, but in new york city, the ball drop will happen but there are upgrated guidelines. unvaccinated minors under the age of 5 must be accompanied by a vaccinated adult to enter the event. the coronavirus avoids unvaccinated toddlers if there is a vaccinated parent? what is the sense to this? >> it's ridiculous. sometimes you think who the heck came one that rule? we're just sort of kowtowing to the lowest common denominator and trying to please everybody and we're helping nobody. so any parent who has a young child not vaccinated should not go into such a large group of people. >> at this point, should these celebrations be canceled? >> you know, in my opinion, yes. i mean, have we not learned a lesson over the last two years? every time we try to make an exception, every time we try to soften up the rules, we get bitten. we did it in july, when we -- the cdc prematurely said it was all right to take your mask off. there has to be a period of no progression of infections for us to feel safe. so yes, i do think that those large celebrations should be canceled at this point. >> we know that health officials in south africa confirming the worst of the omicron wave is over and confirming it was less severe than delta and was over in a shorter period of time. most people hear that and not a lot else. but it's important to listen to what you're about to hear. listen. >> an all-time peak for hospitalizations and half of them are children under 5. >> i'll be honest, it's unlike anything we have seen, even at the peak of the prior surges of covid. what we're experiencing right now is an absolute overwhelming of the emergency departments throughout the washington, d.c. area. >> what we're seeing in the hospital today is the same thing we have seen at the beginning of every single surge. so to hear that omicron is different and is not causing immense illness in people is not what we're seeing on the ground. >> that's just a small sample of what's happening across this country. we're sick and tired of being sick and tired, but we can't ignore the virus. how do you convince people that this is, in fact, serious? >> well, john, i used to have sort of some humor and say some people aren't going to believe it until they have to jump over dead bodies to get to the store. that's still hyperbole, but we're not far from that. this omicron may be milder, but ten times more people are getting infected. therefore, ten times more people are probably going to be going to the hospital. quite honestly, i sit here tonight with you, kind of hopeless and dejected and in shock for the first time in a long time. when i found out that yesterday there were almost 500,000 new cases in the united states, far surpassing anything. when you see the graphs, they're going straight up like a rocket. i think soon we will be seeing millions of people getting infected on a daily basis. the shame of it is, we have, at our disposal, something that can prevent that very quickly, and those are vaccines. due to politics or stubbornness or whatever, we're not taking advantage of that. and hopefully, it won't happen. but when history is written, they will be laughing saying, you know what? they had the cure and the treatment at their fingertips and they didn't use it. and that is a deadly shame. >> yet, at the very least. dr. rodriguez, thank you so much. all the best in the new year. >> thank you. likewise. one hard learned lesson of the pandemic has been the crucial need to stockpile ppe. masks, gloves, other personal protective equipment were in short supply when the pandemic began. for years, the u.s. has relied on cheap manufacturers in other countries. but that could soon be about to change. >> reporter: literally hot off the production line. the very firsthand mold being dip, the result, a reliable stream of medical grade gloves made in america. this is a big deal, because for decades, the u.s. has imported these gloves from cheap suppliers, almost entirely in asia. it took a pandemic to change that. businessman dilan radigan says he felt compelled to act. >> we just watched hundreds of thousands, more than 500,000 americans die, and many of them for no reason. i think bad decisions have been made in american manufacturing, specifically for critical assets like class one medical devices. the decision has been made to make sure that never happens again. >> reporter: when the pandemic exploded, a cnn investigation found counterfeit, substandard or even used medical gloves being imported to the u.s. by the tens of millions. prepandemic, there was only one glove producer in the u.s., in fayette, alabama. but the company struggled to even get the u.s. government to buy the gloves because they cost twice the price.
