roof there is just gone. and that's what it looks like in mayfield as you go block to block. there is destruction like that across the state of kentucky and across the region. it all started friday night with the first twister touching down in arkansas and striking a nursing home. one person died. the governor called incident a miracle as the swarm of twisters tore a path 20 miles across kentucky. a candle factory was leveled with 110 people working a night shift. it's unclear how many were inside at the time. rescuers crawled over the dead to get to the living, a disaster scene. and we know it smelled like scented candles. eight confirmed dead. eight unaccounted for. in dawson springs, kentucky, the death toll stands at 13. there are still 100 people missing there. home after home destroyed. the mayor estimates 75% of the town is gone and described the scene in one word, chaos. right now more than 50,000 kentucky residents are without power. 18 counties are reporting damage. the governor of the state who lost members of his own family in this says there's not enough camera lens to show the path of absolute destruction. >> gone. we have glass broken. all the furniture is torn, broken. it's just sad. >> i want to find my wife. i want to find her if she's still somewhere safe. i hope she's somewhere safe. baby, please call me so we can get connected. please call me. >> windows breaking, dogs flying through the air. i didn't know who to do. walls caving in. it was scary. >> i just told her to close her eyes. she started counting. she was like hide and seek, mom? so we just counted until we didn't feel any more pressure, any more wind. >> in illinois, an amazon warehouse was completely leveled. employees only had an 11-minute warning before a tornado ripped through the building. search efforts are continuing for people still believed to be trapped. it is a heartbreaking scene as the level of destruction still remains unclear this morning. >> so we've been in mayfield now for a day talking to as many people as we can and learning some of the stories of the people who survived. tommy anderson and his family rode out the storm in a basement bathroom as the tornado was tearing his home to sleds. he described what he saw, heard, and felt that night. >> i watched the storm come. and then i watched rain, lightning and stuff. and then i saw when the city transformers or electrical station -- i saw when the transformers blew up. >> you saw a boom, boom? >> well, you couldn't hear necessarily the noise. but i've been in a lot of storms. when the transformers arkansas together, it's blue -- it's not red, but it's a blue color. i knew what that was. the lights blink, and then all the power goes off. about that same time, within a minute, you could feel the wind changing and the air changing. my son was with me. and i said it's time for us to get to shelter. so we stepped inside the shelter. >> what kind of shelter are you talking about? . >> well, it's a basement bathroom is what it is. but it's against the ground or whatever, the bathroom. downstairs. >> so how many of you were in there? . >> five of us and a cat. >> and then what? >> well, as soon as we closed the door, it tried to pull it back home. i guess the air pressure or whatever. so we pulled it closed. and then the air pressure, our ears popped. and then stuff started shaking and moving and we could hear the glass breaking, stuff flying around. just shaking and moving and the noise from the rumble of the wind and everything. you know, we don't have any idea what we're going to see when we come out. it probably lasted probably about two minutes at most. this was our front porch. you can see the railing here and one of the columns there. our front living room. this room we called our piano room. we had piano and instruments in there. >> where is the piano now? >> it's still in there. we hope to get it out without any more damage. the kitchen is here. the pwoeupbdz are blown out of it. and stuff just crazy. and back bedroom. . >> this is a bedroom right here? . >> it was. >> who slept here. well, it was a bedroom -- our boys slept -- our oldest son slept there when he was at home. he's been gone for a while. . >> okay. >> so he kind of let his boys take over that. . >> but this was a bedroom. >> yeah. and then on the other side, you see the other wall, that was another bedroom. that was our daughter's bedroom. you see the wall of it sticking out there. . >> and down here is the basement. this is where ultimately inside there, the bathroom that you stayed in was back under there? . >> yes. >> there's still walls in there. . >> yeah. it is. and then our cars -- our vehicles. >> you got yourself. you've got your family. >> that's right. that's exactly right. everything else is just stuff. >> so a couple things tommy told me there. their christmas tree survived the tornado. it was pushed over and moved all over the place. they were able to get it out. they have moved it to in-laws and they will have christmas there with the christmas tree that survived the tornado, which is just remarkable. one other thing. i asked tommy to take me inside to show me the bathroom. and he said he couldn't because his wife wouldn't let him because it looks like a tornado tore through the house is what he said. it's amazing he still has a sense of humor after all of this. joining me is sam brown, owner of gibson's pharmacy as well as his father was before him. the pharmacy is in mayfield now, and it is now in ruins. sam, thank you for being with us this morning. i am sorry for what happened to your pharmacy. but your family, how are they? >> thankfully, they are okay. our house survived the tornado. it just missed our house by a few hundred yards. but my family is safe. >> and you live just a few hundred yards from the candle factory? . >> just down the road. >> so it came close to you. >> my dad purchased it the year i was born. i'm 38. so it's all we've ever known. >> and what's it look like now? . >> a war scene. it just totally demolished. . >> after the tornado passed through your house, how long -- by your house, how long did it tay you to get your first look at the pharmacy? >> it took -- well, i started receiving photos from friends that had gotten word that they could get up here faster than i could. i got here. missed wife and i just as fast as we could. it was just trying to navigate through downed power lines. we were running over road signs that were just bent over into the road. my wife works there as well. and we just wanted to see the damage. you can't comprehend -- we couldn't comprehend it until we saw it in person. >> what was it like the moment you saw it? . >> heartbreaking. it really was. my dad worked a lot of years in that store. >> santa had come to the store earlier that day. . >> that's right. about five hours before the tornado hit, the lobby was full of families for the community. my kids were in there. and it's just, you know, it's packed. the parking lot is packed. and that was -- that's actually the very last video i have of the property is a lobby full of kids sitting on santa's lap. >> it's got to be a sweet memory. if the last memory you have of the pharmacy intact is of santa in there with the kids -- >> it is. my dad always looked forward to the day santa came, seeing the grandkids sitting on the lap. he always liked seeing the customers and people in the community bringing their kids in. and he would always chat with them. so that's just kind of what i tell myself is, you know, that was the day of the year dad really always looked forward to. >> you lost your father not long ago. >> i did. he passed away of cancer in february. he was a great guy. he provided a life for me that i've benefited from that pharmacy. and i just had dreams of doing the same for my kids. >> i'm so sorry for your loss. >> thank you. >> what would he want for you to do now with the pharmacy? . >> well, we're picking up. we have another location open on the other side of town. we're wanting to be up and running today and trying to just service the community the best we can. we've been working nonstop to get it going. >> that's what he would want. he would want you to serve the community the best you can. whether or not the building is still standing. . >> effort that. what other choice do we have? >> you're working to get prescriptions to the people of this town. in e in. >> exactly right. at the end of the day there is still a community that needs to be served. we have a great team. we're just working endlessly trying to get it going. >> and that's all you can do. that's all you can do. your son jonah, right, the beauty area inside was named after him. your wife named it after him. >> my wife lost 100% of her income. she is a pharmacist and the boutique. we named it shop jonah brown. yesterday he wanted to have his picture taken on top of the rubble where the boutique was. so she's heartbroken. it's hard making up in the middle of the night to your wife crying. . >> i'm sorry. it's so much loss. you look everywhere and there's loss. but you also look and you see people like you who are still working for the community, who know you have to be there for everybody. >> yeah. that's right. you know, we're not going anywhere. we're committed to the community. the community has been great to my family over my life. and we're going to serve it the best we can. . >> because you've been there for them four decades. they're going to be there for you. you're all going to be there for each other. and i know that jonah and his brother, they will have a chance at the pharmacy. you will make it right. you will get it rebuilt and you will be here for this town going forward. >> i sure hope so. >> sam, be well. again, we're so sorry for your physical loss but -- i'm glad that you have your wife and your kids. and i'm glad you're there for her. >> i'm thrilled at the end of the day my family is okay. >> now i know you're waking up crying, but it won't be long before you are waking up smiling and laughing. be well. thank you. all the best going forward. it's just one story in this town. but you get a sense of what people here are going through. and i just want to make one thing clear. and sam made it clear. there's a lot of loss here, but no one stopped. you're on the ground on the streets for five minutes. it takes five minutes before someone walks up and offers you water and a sandwich and a chance to try to do something for everyone else to rebuild. it's been a couple days but you would be amazed how much progress has been made. there is other news beyond this town and this state. we have new details about mark meadows and his actions during the insurrection, who he wanted on stand by to protect pro-trump people one day before the attack on the capitol plus, putting the rumors to rest. house speaker nancy pelosi may not retire. and boris johnson is under fire again for allegedly breaking covid laws during a christmas quiz party last year. there are only more questions after new pictures from emerged. find your rhythm. your happy place. find your breaking point. then break it. every emergen-c gives you a potent blend of nutrients so you can emerge your best with emergen-c. ♪ ♪ ♪ "how bizarre" by omc ♪ no annual fee on any discover card. ♪ ♪ ♪ this holiday, let them shine like never before. ♪ ♪ ♪ this is how we shine. ♪ find the perfect gift at zales. the diamond store. instantly clear everyday congestion with vicks sinex saline. for fast drug free relief vicks sinex. instantly clear everyday congestion. and try vicks sinex children's saline. safe and gentle relief for children's noses. before discovering nexium 24hr to treat her frequent heartburn... claire could only imagine enjoying chocolate cake. now, she can have her cake and eat it too. nexium 24hr stops acid before it starts for all-day, all-night protection. can you imagine 24 hours without heartburn? >> reporter: this is giving a lot of color the extent to which the former chief of staff went to utilize and every outlet available to him to try to overturn the election largely because that's what the president wanted. let's go back to the january 5th email, one of the fee kindings. a january 5th email in which mark meadows said this. the national guard would be present to protect pro-trump people and many more would be on stand by. what we know is the national guard did not arrive until hours after the fighting began. and there continue to be questions about who made the decisions, how they were made, and what was -- basic live responsible for the time lag between when the request was made and when the national guard ended up being activated and making their way to the capitol. there are others, mark meadows appointing an alternate slate of electors to nullify their votes which would overturn the election. here is a snippet. received text messages and emails regarding efforts to encourage republican legislators in certain states to send alternate shraeuts of electors, a plan in which one member of congress acknowledged was highly controversial and to which mark meadows responded, i love it. again, continue to be more and more examples of what we already know, that mark meadows went to great lengths to try to overturn the election. there are also new details about what was going on within the white house, within trump's orbit january 6th. one of those revelations, a media personality encouraged the former president to put out a statement once the fighting was going on at the capitol urging people to leave peacefully. additionally, a communication between mark medicine toes and a rally organizer that said to him, this is getting crazy. we really need to get some guidance here. i desperately need some guidance. and the resolution alludes to communications there. it goes on and on. ultimately, kaitlyn, this is the effort to get more information from mark meadows, especially about documents he's already provided. however, mark meadows contends their request for information is overly broad, that it has no legitimate purpose. >> yeah. of course he is now saying after he turned over these documents and these text messages. whitney wild. thank you so much. joining us is legal and national security asha rangappa, former special agent and lectures at yale university. i want to show you the broader picture of how intertwined the former chief of staff was leading up to the events of that day. it seems like shadowy figures outside the white house. now you are seeing how close it was inside the west wing as they were e planning this. >> yes. kaitlyn. i think what the resolution makes clear is mark meadows was kind of the ground zero for a lot of the different threats leading up to january 6th. they know he was receiving and sending messages about the national guard as we just heard, the delay in deploying them, fact that they were assigned to protect the people who were at the ellipse. but also the efforts to weaponize doj in terms of calling into question election results. also in terms of being in touch with rally organizers. so he has a lot of information to give. and what i'll add is the resolution makes clear is that the committee already has a lot of information. they have a picture here. and they have very, very specific lines of questioning for mark meadows in which he will have to name names and also provide the content of specific communications that he had with all of these people. >> well, and i wondered, what was your reaction to what we learned about the national guard, the fact that mark meadows was saying they would have the national guard there to protect the pro-trump people? i guess the question is protect them from whom? what questions does it raise about how long it took to get the national guard there? >> i would rewind one more loop. they actually contemplated the fact that the national guard might be necessary. i mean, you know, there's this building picture here that the idea that there would be some kind of big disruption on january 6th that might require a large law enforcement response, a national guard response, tells us they were anticipating something. potentially violent. and that they were planning out, they were gaming out how, you know, how to make this benefit trump. but it does shed light on the fact that the delay in the deployment of the national guard was not just some kind of miscommunication, which sounds like until now this has been the narrative, but something that was more deliberate. >> and what about this powerpoint? i think this is something that everyone has been talking about. it is something that mark meadows turned over to the committee. his attorney said he turned it over because it wasn't privileged. it was something he received but didn't do anything with. it is completely concerning. it was sent to the chief of staff at the white house at the time. and of course in part of it it talks about declaring a national emergency when it comes to how they wanted to contest these results. so mark meadows said he didn't actually do anything with this. what did you do with the fact that he had it in his hands in the first place? . >> yes, kaitlyn. there is a lot of crazy in the powerpoint. at least the version that's been circulating online. and i think what is striking about this is, again, this was formalized. you know, we have heard a lot of these conspiracy theories sort of circulating about in different ways. this is compiled all together. this was intended for everyone to get on the same page. and as you mentioned, there is a part in there about trump declaring a national emergency. now, kaitlyn, declaring a national emergency triggers a lot of stand-by statutes that gives the president extra power. what was going to be the precipitating event that would allow the president to do this? again, i think mark meadows, even if he didn't create the powerpoint, has a lot of answers to these questions. . >> of course now else he is not cooperating. we will see how it plays out with the committee. thank you. in bowling green, kentucky, many people are picking up the pieces after testify stating storms ripped through their communities. and the teen accused of killing his classmates in michigan due in court later today. the charges he faces ahead. this is your home. this is your family room slash gym. the guest bedroom slash music studio. the daybed slash dog bed. the living room slash yoga shanti slash regional office slash classroom. and this is the basement slash panic room. maybe what your family needs is a vacation home slash vacation home. find yours on the vrbo app. ♪ ♪ you pour your heart into everything you do, which is a lot. so take care of that heart with lipton. because sippin' on unsweetened lipton can help support a healthy heart. lipton. stop chuggin'. start sippin'. ♪ ♪ cases of anxiety in young adults are rising as experts warn of the effects on well-being caused by the pandemic. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ it's another day. and anything could happen. it could be the day you welcome 1,200 guests and all their devices. or it could be the day there's a cyberthreat. only comcast business' secure network solutions give you the power of sd-wan and advanced security integrated on our activecore platform so you can control your network from anywhere, anytime. it's network management redefined. every day in business is a big day. we'll keep you ready for what's next. comcast business powering possibilities. welcome back. i'm john berman in mayfield, kentucky. it's about 33 degrees here this morning. and the power is still out in town. so you can appreciate the challenges that the people here face. i did just hear water came back on to some parts of the community, which is welcomed as they try to rebuild every day. this deadly tornado outbreak destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses in bowling green, kentucky. you can see from this video the extensive damage. several people in the area are now without homes, power and other necessities. cnn's nick valencia live in bowling green with the very latest. nick, what are you seeing there? she will be making her first appearance in this case after a previous attorney had to be recused because of conflict of interest. it is the first time we will see the alleged shooter since his parents were arrested and charged with helping him get the gun, essentially buying the gun for him, prosecutors have said. today we are supposed to get some scheduling, talk of evidence, and the fact that the next steps in this case will require potentially a preliminary hearing scheduled for next week. the other thing we could be seeing is first indications of what kind of defense the alleged shooter hopes to mount, whether he will be separating himself in ways from his family, his parents. interestingly enough, his parents have hired their own lawyer. they are paying for the lawyer. the alleged shooter's lawyer is being appointed by the court. it seems there is already some separation between the family and the alleged shooter. >> i think people are going to watch that relationship so closely. of course now there is so much surveillance footage of this. they have seen so much of what has happened. shimon, thank you for joining us this morning. so this morning a snowballing political scandal in the united kingdom. the mirror newspaper published a photo from 2020 showing boris johnson hosting a christmas quiz show party despite covid restrictions at the time. cnn has not independently verified the details, but it is the latest example of uk officials throughouting their own covid rules. although johnson denies any rules were broken. we have the latest on this. salma. >> reporter: john, more and more details now mounting in that growing "body of evidence" that shows that parties, plural, took place at the prime minister's residence and offices last year during lockdown. the latest coming from the tabloid here, the mirror. i will show it to you from over the weekend. the still image we have of the prime minister playing a quiz. people dressed up beside him. and that headline, taking us for fools again. this is no longer, john, just about what parties took place, how many of them, who was in attendance, when did they take place. it's now about how the prime minister has handled this. because his strategy all along has been denial, denial, denial. no parties took place, no parties took place, despite the fact that we now have video, stills, multiple accounts to multiple news organizations. still the prime minister has denied any wrongdoing. now, he has launched an investigation into this. but you can imagine the public outrage. and it's difficult to see what on earth the prime minister could say or do at this point to make this controversy go away, to make it okay that senior downing street officials were eating cheese and drinking wine while hundreds of people in this country were dying of covid-19 alone in hospitals la of year. the first few tests of this will be in parliament tomorrow. the other thing to be concerned about is the uk is fighting omicron cases. health officials say the number of cases of omicron is doubling every two to three days. it's set to be the dominant strain. by the end of the month, it could put pressure on the health systems. that's why boris johnson is back in parliament tomorrow, trying to push through new coronavirus restrictions, new measures. and we already know that members of his own party, conservative back benchers will rebel against the measures. they're going to vote against their prime minister. and that's when we're going to start to see the cracks in the system. because if the prime minister cannot hold the support of his own party, that's when the possibility of a no confidence vote comes into place. it would require a mutiny, his own party turning against him. but that's the possibility now, john. . >> all right. thank you very much for that. back here in kentucky, devastation, heartbreak, but also, i should note, hope everywhere you look. communities across eight states picking up after a deadly tornado killed dozens. our live special coverage continues straight ahead. >> plus, history has been made with alabama's brice young. when this crimson tide
