. tiger woods recovering in a los angeles hospital after suffering serious legging injuries following a high-speed roll over crash in his suv. the l.a., excuse me, l.a. county sheriff saying the airbags and seat belt saved his life. they used a pry bar, and axe to get him out. two former presidents wishing him well. barack obama saying he has learned to never count tiger out and donald trump saying he hopes woods gets better and talked about his television ratings. we are in los angeles and we will go through what happened and what officials are saying tonight. >> person trapped. sheriff on scene. >> reporter: the emergency dispatch call came just after 7:00 a.m. pacific time. >> vehicle on the side of the road. >> reporter: that vehicle was a silver suv that lay mangled on its side, inside was golf legend tyi tiger woods. >> i was able to get my upper body through the windshield. >> reporter: the car had flipped, with the driver side door on the ground. deputy's goal keep the injured woods alert. >> when i got there he was lucid, i was able to ask him his name and where he was and what time of day it was. i did not need to keep him conscious. what i was more focused on was when to keep him talking. >> reporter: a law enforcement force is said that woods suffer suffered from nonlife threatening injuries which included fractures in his legs. firefighters say he was transported to harbor ucla hospital. but at the time of the crash, clear, and the roadway -- >> no skid marks and no breaking. the first contact was with the center median and from there, then cross in to the opposing lane of traffic. hit the curb. hit a tree and there was several roll-overs in the process. >> reporter: the words genesis invitational are visible on the suv's door. tiger woods was listed as a tournament host for the event that ended on sunday, not far from the crash site, at the tournament woods told cbs sports he was looking forward to the masters tournament in april. after fighting through five back surgeries in recent years. >> so tiger, seven weeks from today, final round of the masters, you going to be there? >> god i hope so. i have on to get there first. >> you feel like you -- >> a lot of it is based on my surgeons and my doctors and my therapists and making sure that i do it correctly and this is the only back i got. >> reporter: reaction cross the sports world came quickly across social meade and from had his fellow professional golfers. >> i'm sick to my stomach. you know, it hurts to see one of your, now my closest friends, getting in an accident and i hope he is all right. just worried for his kids. you know, i'm sure they are struggling. >> reporter: and shock from the entertainment world. before news of the crash, three different celebrities had posted photos, golfing with woods. among them this video from former nba star, dwyane wade. an iconic athlete who broke barriers in sports and culture for decades now faces another challenge. >> good evening to you, josh campbell with us as well at harvard ucla medical center. good to see you, i'm going to start with you. the sheriff's department, giving a lot of detail about the accident. including this specific stretch of road. what are they saying about it? >> well, this is an area no one for having speed issues. and if you look at a map of where this crash happenhappened an area with a lot of hills and grading issues. this particular roadway had such speed issues because of the grading that they had two truck pull-offs. i want you to listen to the description of this particular roadway. >> that specific stretch of roadway is one of our trouble spots. our locals know that it's a hot spot for traffic collisions as well as speed. in my experience, as a deputy, who is traffic trained and working traffic car, i have seen many collisions. the nature of his collision, the fact that he was wearing his seat belt, it greatly increased the likelihood that it saved his life. >> reporter: now this earlier in the investigation they cannot say the speed is a factor, but i want to remind you what you heard from the sheriff's department that there were no brakes, and no skid marks at the scene of the accident, don. >> let's go to josh now, josh, let's talk about, you are at the hospital, what is the latest on tiger's continue? >> well, at the hour, he is recovering from the very serious injuries. behind me, he was taken to the local level 1 trauma center here. this is servicing the south bay area. to give you a sense of injuries, we heard from law enforcement earlier in the day, he had likely received a compound fracture to both or one of his legs. the injuries are reported now shattered ankle, two broken legs, two fractured legs. very, very serious injuries. as you look at the images of the vehicle, the suv that roll ready over, it is just nothing short of a miracle that these injuries were not more severe and perhaps fatal in the words of authority when you look at the vehicle going down hill in a high rate of spees, crossing over in to a median and in to a wooded area. remarkable that the injuries were not more serious. >> that vehicle is demolishes. you are right about that. and josh, woods had just undergone his fifth back surgery earlier this year. what was his condition like before the accident? >> youtiger woods is no stranger for injuries. he underwent back surgery last month, as you mentioned, the fifth back surgery of his career. he spoke with cbs this past weekend and he was asked whether or not he would be well enough to take part in the masters which is set on to take place in augusta in april and he thought he hoped that he would be and it raises questions of what his recovery will be. >> i want to bring in cnn contributor and sports broadcasting legend, bob costas. here we are. you have covered tiger for decades. what did you think when you heard of the crash and what do you think now? >> well, i'm not going to draw any conclusions about what led to the crash or what tiger's state of mind might have been. all of that will be clear enough in the coming days. we have gotten more clarity over the last few abhors than we when the story first broke. so, my first thought was the same as yours. just about everyone else's, oh, my gosh. look at the visual. look at the condition the car is in. and i hope the crash is not life threatening or where it will impair him going forward as a person. not so much as a golfer. but as a person. now it appears clear that even though these are traumatic injuries he will be able to lead a normal life. whether he will be able to resume a golf career is very much in doubt. that was in doubt already because at age 45, he had five back surgeries. he had had other back surgeries to his leg. he was a guy who was not nearly what he was at his peak. and hoping just to be able to get back and compete. that was in doubt to begin with and now, it's in very, very severe doubt. >> you think about it, five back surgeries, bob. i mean, that is, that is a lot. andthe arc of tiger's career, how does this crash stack up? he has faced so many challenges. how does that stack up? >> well, again, we don't know his exact condition. once he comes through surgery and comes through rehab, obviously he will not play any golf this year. i guess anything is in the realm of possibility. if you are just talking about his competitive heart and his willingness to accept a challenge. that is not in question. but this may not be a challenge that is surmountable in terms of him coming back to compete. as i spoke earlier on various other cnn programs, his excellence is one thing. it's beyond excellence, he is among the all-time elite in any sport. and obviously, he has personal charisma and magnatism and his story now takes on such texture, even without this chapter. what he represented, even though he was not an ali, or ashe, orca r -- or kareem or others that you could mention. he was not specific oriented, but his presence, especially in the beginning of his career was symbolically important. then he the scandal and he to come back from that and he the physical challenges and where it was a almost a foregone conclusion, where he won 14 majors less than a decade and he was still in his 30s. it was a foregone conclusion that he would zoom past nicklaus 18. and now it looks his like 15 wo be the number. look at 15, it's a decade after he fell out of the rankings he comes back a majorer and wins at augusta. he has that. i said to jake tapper earlier, if you were shooting a movie about tiger woods life, the closer scene would not be this car accident, and it would not be the way his life came crashing down around him in 2009, it would be that moment on the 18th green in augusta in 2019. >> a couple things here. you said that his presence was sim symbolically significant. let's talk about that, and his wins. that was 2015. he broke racial barriers with his success, no doubt, what the did it mean to see him, bob, put on the green jacket for the first time in 1997 s? >> i mentioned this to don berman so i apologize for those who it will be repetitive. only seven years before tiger woods wins the masters. there had been other notable black golfers. lee elder. but none with the competitive success and presence of tiger woods. so, now, here's tiger woods. not only winning. basically his coming out party to the world. not only winning but shattering the masters record in the process. blowing the field away. when he comes walking up the 18th fairway. anybody who is paying attention and knows any of the back story has to be struck by the symbolism. there was about augusta. which i want to say is magnificent in many ways. there's a southern gentility in the best sense. >> i have gone to the masters a number of times and the cheese sandwiches and not even to mention the food, go on. >> it's a thrill to play the course. etcetera. all the history, but there was for a very long time echos of the antebellum south and the jim crow south. none of -- they didn't have a female member until 2010, somewhere around there. all of the members were white men. all of staff virtually were black. so, the symbolism of this black man prevailing over an entirely white field in that setting, he didn't have to take a stand. his mere presence said something. >> yeah. bob costas, thank you so much, i appreciate you being on. doesn't matter. the other guys don't count, it's just this show that counts. thank you, bob. i appreciate it. >> that's what jill thinks too, don. >> jill is his wife, and i'm her favorite so i like that. at least i'm someone's favorite besides my mom. tell jill i said hello. >> all right, don, thanks. >> bye-bye, tigers was a super star in a sport that was overwhelmingly white. what does that accident mean for his legacy. >> didn't expect anything like that to happen, from everything that i know about tiger, you know, i'm sure he will recover and he will do everything in his power to come back. new aveeno® restorative skin therapy. with our highest concentration of prebiotic oat intensely moisturizes over time to improve skin's resilience. aveeno® healthy. it's our nature™. the harry's razor is not the same our razors have 5 german-engineered blades designed to stay sharp so you can enjoy lasting comfort and we never upcharge you for high quality harry's. available in store and at harrys.com feeling sluggish or weighed down? >> it's been really significant. i mean, i think, it not only gave the game a different look, but a different feel, tiger woods brought to the sport of g golf. you saw a lot of younger golfers begin to pattern their habits after tiger woods. suddenly you have black people watching golf, that was not watching golf before. and it's just gave everything just a different texture, and through that, through his lens and success and excellence, you know, people were able to point to some very problema tic areas and blind spots and they owe him for that. >> what about in society, you talk about the affect that he had on the game himself. what about society at large and when it comes to race or social issues. >> well, i mean, i think there's no question that when it comes to black people in general, people of color. they tend to put us in a box. the idea of him being a dominant successful golfer. he was not just successful. i think people really as time goes on, under estimate how dominating he was. we are talking about somebody who at one point held all the major championships. 82pga tour victories. five masters. >> wow. >> i mean, this was something you will never see again. i mean, i remember when i was at espn and don, whenever tiger was in a major tournament, the legitimate question we would ask and dewait, tiger on the field, and post times we took tiger, that doesn't happen anymore. so i think his excellence that people were able to view not just black people, black men in particular. so, he just really, you know, it really just brought home, just kind of a transendent affect that he had on athletics with his excellence. >> he weathered storms. he a comeback and obviously he is human. but there was this, what somebody would call an epic fall from grace. this was in 2009 after his affairs came to light. then this apology, watch this. >> i know i have bitterly disappointed all of you. i have made you question who i am and how i could have done the things i did. i am embarrassed that i have put you in this position. for all that i have done, i am so sorry. i was unfaith. i had affairs. i cheated. what i did is not acceptable. and i am the only person to blame. >> interesting, i mean, many people remember where they were. i remember being in the newsroom and watching that. that changed him. how did that change, how did he change after that experience? >> well, don, i just have to keep it real with you. as i always do anyway. when we think about this man actually having to go on a national plat for. >> right. i know what you are going to say. >> it's like, dude, if professional athletes had to apologize every time they cheated, you would never have a show, don, they would be on air all day. >> you jameel, if every time th average person cheated, that's why people get divorces, that's why the divorce rate is so high, people cheat all the time. i'm sorry to interrupt. >> i say it all to say, that was an unfortunate lesson that tiger woods had to learn and unfortunately for a lot of black athletes who get to his level of success. there's going to be a moment where they are coming for you and to think that if the worst thing you have on tiger woods' resume is that he cheated and it's not to belittle what it can did -- what it did to his family, or his former wife. but we have seen worse. and the way it got treated is a study in to media in itself. and it was a humbling for him. but it was a humbling that certain people seem very interested in seeing happen given his level and rise and success. and i'm not saying that it was not a story, but again, let's put it in to context, somebody apologized, held a media news conference for cheating. that's what it was. i can say it, don, that's what it was. >> that's why we love having you on, again, it's not to say it did not impact his family and wife, bought tut there were perspectives. >> there were sponsors that dropped him over that. over that. come on, man, all right, on okay. i get it. >> jameel, love having you, thank you. appreciate it. >> always a pleasure, don. >> speaking out for the first time, the people responsible for keeping the capitol safe, testifying on the hill today. >> i was just stunned that you know, i have officers that were out there literally fighting for their lives and you know, we are kind of going through, you know, what seemed like an exercise to really check the boxes -- what do you look for when you trade? i want free access to research. yep, td ameritrade's got that. free access to every platform. mhm, yeah, that too. i don't want any trade minimums. yeah, i totally agree, they don't have any of those. i want to know what i'm paying upfront. yes, absolutely. do you just say yes to everything? >> it very well could be. don, if i'm running the fbi today, i have great concerns about that. and i would be asking three questions. first question is, are we collecting the right intelligence about this domestic extremist threat in the united states? there's all kinds of information out there that people were really getting ramped up for this protest and was the fbi aware of it. second, with the intelligence we are collecting, are we making the right assessments. that gets to the heart of the question you are asking, were assumptions made, do you think that because these were mostly political supporters of the president, they did not have too much to worry about. did they place too much emphasis that there was no sign of counter protesters so they thought it would be peaceful. those are the questions i would be asking. and a final question is, how were we communicating what we know to our partners and we now know it's not done well. >> shouldn't capitol hill security and all the people testifying today, shouldn't they have seen it coming? >> well, they should have had a better view of the intelligence that appears to have been available. and they should have taken much more stringent measure says to protect the capitol. senator hassan had one of the best questions today, when she asked why didn't the department of homeland security declare this, this event a national special security event, nsse, simply by doing that would have ramped the preparation and the coordination way up, probably to a level that would have prevented this attack. good question to be asked of the dhs, as to why they didn't take the step? >> and why didn't they have so much security in other places i'm a told, like malls and that sort of thing, when the threat, which came from, you know, the threat assessment said it was all go withing to happen in the capitol and it was preplanned. that was interesting as well, officials are confirming that white supremacists were involved in the insurrection and we have known that the they are a serious threat for a while. is enough being done to stop these domestic terrorists, andrew? >> we are clearly in a wave of domestic terrorism extremism, and particularly right wing groups. racially motivated groups, anti-government groups. director ray testified to that affect last summer in front of congress. the question is what are we sdsdo i -- whatwe doing about it? i think we need to bring as much attention to it as we did for the 9/11 issues. we have to acknowledge that it's the biggest threat and we need to do something about it. >> why is it so hard for that to happen? the fbi has been saying it for years and people don't take it seriously. what is going on? >> you have to ask, don, whether some of that reluctance is based on the well known often reported fact that the former president did not want to hear about the threat. there's no coincidence that some of the groups are, were big support ers of president trump and conservative causes. is there a political motivation to turn a blind eye to the significance of the threat? i think that is something that we need to get to the bottom of. and we are not going to do it in a senate hearing. we need a dedicated bipartisan commission to peel back the onion. >> he lost the senate, they cannot give him up, they can't quit him. what pence is saying about trump tonight, that's next. the harry's razor is not the same our razors have 5 german-engineered blades designed to stay sharp so you can enjoy lasting comfort and we never upcharge you for high quality harry's. available in store and at harrys.com tonight, i'll be eating the al pastor burrito from boca burritos right here in aurora. (trill sound) covid's still a threat. and on reopening schools, we know what happens when we don't put safety first. ignore proper ventilation or rates of community spread, and the virus worsens. fail to provide masks or class sizes that allow for social distancing, and classrooms close back down. a successful reopening requires real safety and accountability measures. including prioritizing vaccines for educators. parents and educators agree: reopen schools. putting safety first. so is far, vice president mike pence is telling conservative lawmakers that he has no ill will against donald trump after the january 6th insur insurrection, no ill will? okay. protesters were screaming hang mike pence, he said that he has a friendship with the president and will launch a campaign to defend the president's record. you cannot make it up. form communications director for senator ted cruz, hi, amanda, you had a good week. >> it's been a week. >> oh, my gosh. okay. so, good evening to both of you. amanda, trump knew his vp was in danger on january 6th. he did nothing about it. pence is still crawling back. what is, what does it say about trump's grip on the gop? what is going on? >> yeah, this, there's, everyone was hyping the civil war that was coming, and it was never going to happen. as long as donald trump is around, there's no internal debate. there's only surrender, after surrender, after surrender. and look at mike pence. i knew the whole time that his silence is going to be strategic. we really could have used him to maybe speak out through impeachmenter considering he was both someone who witnessed first hand all the events that led up to the insurrection and then became a target of it. that would have been a good time for him to provide some testimony. but, he didn't. because ultimately, he still cares about political power. and that, that was so disturbing. and i just can't get around the fact that like, okay, he is not really doing to defend himself. but he still wants to be in some position of political power when he is not going to defend anyone else. because these problems are not going away. it's where i'm so disturbed by the whole thing. >> i wonder what that power is. he is not going to be president. i don't know, maybe he thinks in his head, he is go wing to be. really but his actions have been cow cowardly, especially when it comes to this. i want you to take a listen of what liz cheney said is. >> what happened on that day, must never happen gecagain, and must not look away or trivialize it, it's important for republicans to make clear that we are not the party of white supremacy, you certainly saw anti-semitism, you saw the symbols of holocaust denial at the capitol that day. you saw confederate flag being carried through the rotunda, we as republicans in particular, have a duty and obligation to stand against that and stand against insurrection. >> as you know, brendan, according to ron johnson, none of that happened. none of what liz cheney is saying is true. where are the, do you think republicans will listen and where are the liz cheneys in your party? >> yeah, she is fighting a lonely fight and got bless her had, i thank her for doing it. look, there's a lot of republicans who have a few incentives here to really dismiss this event from anyone's memory. one, of course, they want to eliminate their culpablity, in bringing it on and challenging the electoral college. and they know that, donald trump's biggest liability to get r re-elected president which they all seem willing to help him do is the event of january the 6th. it will be the biggest hurdle that he will have to over come to be president again. you are seeing with ron johnson and conservative media, they are trying to have everyone forget what happeneder, minimize what happened. so when it all comes back around, oh, that's old news. it was not so bad. you know, let's forget about it. let's move on. let's unite. all those things. now, i think, you can't, what liz cheney said is so fundamental for more than republican politics. it's fundamental for the country. but there's not a lot of liz cheneys because it's political suicide to run out and criticize the president. even if you do not want to criticize the president. when you are a party that is basically operating on working to only get, working class white voters, you don't have a lot of margins to write off people. now, i don't think most republicans want white supremacist votes. but a lot of them seem to think it's okay to accept them. because you are operating under such narrow political margins you cannot write anybody off. >> she could be the first native american to be a cabinet secretary. but they are worrieder about a tweet. they are concerned about tweets now. okay. a friend of the interior secretary nominee deb holland speaks out next. sarah shopped for the lowest mortgage rate and chose amerisave, the one choice she'll never regret... ...unlike buying a do-it-yourself orthodontics kit... or marrying eddie... visit amerisave.com now. lower mortgage rates mean higher savings. bottom line is, mom's love that land o' frost premium sliced meats have no by-products.
