the us city of baltimore in shock tonight. a major bridge is struck by a container ship, and topples into the patapsco river. six people are missing. how could such an event happen? we'll bring you the latest. in the last few hours, the israeli government has recalled its negotiators from doha, the talks on a gaza truce it says "at a dead end". we will hear tonight from the head of the palestinian mission to the uk. donald trump needs every nickle he can find right now. and today things looked a little rosier. shares in the parent company of truth social, jumped 55% on the first day of trading. and how would the bbc survive without the licence fee. we will hear from the director general on his funding model for the future. good evening. for nearly fifty years the ships that have sailed, to and from baltimore, have passed the francis scott, key bridge without any dramas at all. until the early hours of this morning. this was the moment the dali, a 300m container ship collided with one of the supporting pillars. within seconds the entire central section of the bridge had collapsed into the water. we now know the ship was half an hour into itsjourney. bound for sri lanka. but suddenly and inexplicably it lost power and began drifting from the channel. the pilots issued a mayday as the maryland transportation authority raced to spot traffic that was heading onto the four lane carriageway. in the minutes before this was the conversation that was unfolding on the police despatch. everybody, the whole bridgejust collapsed. i cannot get to the other side, the bridge is down. thanks to the mayday call and the quick work of the authorities above a much bigger tragedy was avoided. but on the bridge was a construction crew who were fixing potholes. eight of them went into the water. one walked away unhurt, one is in a serious condition. six others remain unaccounted for. an eyewitness alice devilbliss heard the bridge collapse. her house shook as it plunged into the water. her husband is a construction worker, she is worried that some of those missing might be his friends. there is still seven people who are not going to be able to go home tonight and that is scary. my husband is to sometimes drive over that, the fact that his co—workers drive over that, that is terrifying. and it turned from a rescue to a recovery. i hope that they are able to find these people they hope they're able to give those families peace. the authorities say there is no thought that terrorism played a part in this. it is quite simply a freak accident. the maryland governor wes moore told the press the bridge was fully up to code and that crews were notified of the ships difficulties before the collision. the preliminary investigation points to an accident. we haven't seen any credible evidence of a terrorist attack. administration is working closely with leaders from all levels of government and society to respond to this crisis and the immediate aftermath. and also by building a state that is more resilient in a state that is more resilient in a state that is more resilient in a state that is more safe. and the economic hit to the mid west could be severe. the port of baltimore is one of the busiest in north america. last year the port handled a record 52 million tonnes of international cargo. more than 15 thousand people work in the port indirectly it employs 130 thousand. and the bridge is a vital transport link, more than 11 million vehicles take that route ever year. no surprise then that presidentjoe biden is promising the full commitment of the federal government. i have directed my team to reopen the port and reopen the bridge as soon as humanly possible and we are going to work hand—in—hand with the support of maryland and supported them for whatever they ask for. we will work to make sure our state gets the support he needs. the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge. our chief presenter sumi somaskanda has been there since early this morning. reports in the last hour that the ship had dropped anchor as it tried to avoid a collision with the bridge but once the tankers moving, it is very moving at a very fast speed in it appears something went terribly wrong and there is a made a call made and it was clear to those on board today at lost propulsion and lost control of the ship and they gave that distress call to let authorities know and they're able to stop some cars driving onto the bridge and that saved many lives but anything this chip tried to do to change its course at that moment did not work and to keep in mind, this is a 300 metre long ship around 96,000 tonnes and the speed of which was travelling with that weight in that sheer size and mass would have been almost impossible to stop at the last minute with others dramatic images of the ship impacting the bridge and collapsing right away and you can see it over my right shoulder and it is now stuck there, wedged between that debris of the francis scott key bridge and some of those sound bites from the transportation secretary in the governor and also from the president, it's going to take time to rebuild and there's this immediate need of figuring out what happened in the first need is to try to locate the six missing people with a search and rescue team and operations are still working on from the bridge south of the collapse and just about an hour ago, we say guard helicopter that had been circling on the side and passing above and they are widening the search radius as well and all we have heard from authorities that is their number one priority to try to recover the six people who are missing in the rescue operations have been ongoing for more than 12 hours and they will not stop after nightfall and that means within a few hours from now, it will become dark here and they will continue those operations but you are right, they're running up against time and conditions and and make the likelihood of recovering those six missing people even more difficult. —— eight celsius. let's go to washington we can speak to representative glenn ivey he represents maryland's fourth
