of the globe. now a bri project could be a railway in kenya, a port in sri lanka, a bridge in the maldives. the largest project so far has been the china pakistan economic corridor. a $60 billion network of roads railways and pipelines, going through a deserty mountain pass on the china pakistan border. the second thing you need to know is that it has two official names. one for inside china and one for outside. initially it was called one belt, one road which sounds great in chinese. the problem is in english it sounds a bit bossy, that china is dictating to the rest of the world. so a few years ago the official english name was changed to the slightly blander but definitely less threatening belt and road initiative. the third thing is that it is controversial for some. china has ploughed more than $1 trillion into developing countries. there are trains, airports and roads that literally would not exist were it not for chinese investment. ultimately, nothing comes for free. is it a so—called debt trap where a recipient struggles to pay back the loan and china ownership —— takes ownership of the infrastructure? china says this is nonsense. it is the same bilateral lending the western countries do through the world angle imf and there are plenty of independent observers who say it is not in the interest of china to lend money to countries that cannot pay it back. at any case, it is part of the vision for china's place in the world and there will be billions of people paying attention to how the initiative develops over the next ten year. let's ta ke let's take you now to beige and with live pictures coming in. the russian president vladimir putin is expected to arrive there. the plane has arrived and a guard of honour has lined up. we have seen part of the russian delegation alighting from the airport —— aircraft, waiting for the russian president to emerge herein ageing. the third belt and road forum will be hosted today. vladimir putin is there and that is important because he has rarely undertaken any foreign trip since the start of the war with ukraine after the international criminal court issued arrest warrants. this trip will be his first trip outside what was the former soviet union. there will be leaders from africa and other nations in attendance. i spoke to the china director of an intelligence union that told me how around the world there are mixed feelings about there are mixed feelings about the belt and road initiative. you are exactly right. how you view the last ten years depends on where you are viewing it from. in beijing this week we expect china to put forth the bri as a gift for the world. they claim it is created jobs and a0 million people have been lifted out of poverty. america and its allies see it as less benign as a political tool that they believe is used to boost the global standing of china and giving its companies a leg up globally while poorer countries are saddled with debt. one thing we will also see is the way the bri is changing. china has learned some lessons over the last ten years as have some of the countries participating in the bri in various ways. with the chinese economy doing the way it is with the lack of liquidity in the general slowdown, how do you see the initiative going forward? fine initiative going forward? one ofthe initiative going forward? one of the interesting _ initiative going forward? (me: of the interesting challenges for china at the moment, particularly as china has learned that lending without risk assessment in the global south has brought challenges and this is not unlike what lenders experience bed imf or elsewhere that debt repayment can be be complicated. the challenge in terms of the chinese domestic economy is that local governments and municipal level saddled with a large amount of debt so china really cannot forgive debt, for example, in zambia or sri lanka if they cannot do the same in any of its provinces at home. let's had now to india where vehicle exports or a 70% decline. the two wheel segment saw its biggest disruption. our corresponded with the details. most of the automotive exports from india at a south asian countries, latin america and parts of africa. of which have been adversely affected due to geopolitical issues. but fuel prices since last year have hit finances in developing economies and many have seen foreign—exchange challenges. the reason why exports from india have suffered. the most hit has been for two wheels where exports fell by over 20% in the april— september period. we will come back to that in a moment but let's return now to beijing where the russian president vladimir putin is just arriving there. he has arrived in fact in beijing to meet with his chinese counterpart, xijinping, a counterpart, xi jinping, a widely counterpart, xijinping, a widely watched trip showing the deep mutual trust. it comes one day before joe deep mutual trust. it comes one day beforejoe biden is expected to reach israel so it is important to see that this visit in that context as well as a major crisis in the middle east plays out. it is notjust about the russian president visiting beijing for the belt and road initiative at the larger geopolitical concerns that are currently engulfing the region and its ramifications result in something that analysts will watch out for. putin and his entourage flew in on tuesday morning and these other live pictures coming in and, in fact, this is significant because this is his first visit outside the former soviet union. he has really taken any foreign trips of late, especially after the arrest warrants that were issued by the international criminal court. that is why this visit is going to be very, very significant. those are the live pictures coming out of beijing. all eyes will be on that two—day belt and road forum that china is hosting and the russian president is currently there for. that is the big story that we will continue to track here on the bbc. let's take you through to a story coming out of australia. on the wages they are and the problems that migrant workers have been facing and why they are not reporting wage problems that they have. phil mercer has more. an army of temporary workers helps to keep australia's economy moving. more than 1.5 million migrants are on short term employment visas. many are international students and backpackers. some are exploited by unscrupulous bosses. camillo is from columbia. for months he was underpaid working in hospitality in sydney. they exploit me because i do not really know my rights. they look at me like an idiot, why are you paying less than other staff? it is not because of me, it is because of them, they are doing things wrong, not me. overseas workers often fear that if they complain they will be reported by their employer and add into trouble with immigration authorities. migrants are extremely vulnerable when it comes to wage theft. most of them do not understand the legal system and they fear that reporting the situation that they have been exploited may lead to serious problems such as visa cancellation. the government wants the new laws to give migrants more protection and to make it easier for them to speak out. but as it stands, employers, who exploit their staff, are rarely caught and it is not just a problem for migrants. it is estimated that between three and 9% of all workers are paid below the minimum wage. exploitation has been identified in many sectors including agriculture, hospitality and construction. prosecutions for wage theft in australia are rare. for some companies, workplace abuse is lucrative. many of the businesses that we expose have a business model based on exploitation. they know they can get these young people in, a below minimum rate and i think it trashes our reputation. there are people who say do not go to australia, go to canada and get paid better. proposed new laws would make it a criminal offence to deliberately underpay workers but business groups say the changes would punish companies who make honest mistakes over wages because of complex employment regulations. it is estimated that wage theft is costing workers in australia more than $540 million a year. phil mercer, bbc news, sydney. and that is it for this edition of the asia business report. you can get more on our website. thank you for watching. voiceover: bringing you different storiesl from across the uk. 15—year—old leonie has made so many of these bracelets. she has autism and making the delicate patterns requires intense focus, calming her down after a difficult day. she was diagnosed at 11 but it took years to get support. how many times have i cried to you?
