that there are no members of the australian defence force involved in this incident. our focus as a government and as a department of defence is very much on incident response and on making sure that every support and assistance is given at this difficult time. our reporter in sydney, phil mercer, has the latest. officials have confirmed that three us marines have died in this aircraft crash. this took place on the tiwi islands, about 60 kilometres to the north of darwin, the capital city of australia's northern territory. so right at the north in the middle of australia, on melville island, one of the tiwi islands, this vertical take—off aircraft has crashed. this is an osprey, one of two us vertical take—off aircraft that have been involved in military drills between australian forces and us military forces in the northern territory. we understand that 23 people were on board. three us marines have been confirmed to have been killed. at least five others have been flown to the royal darwin hospital, that is the biggest hospital in the city of darwin, which has initiated its highest emergency response after this aircraft crash here in australia earlier today. and the people that have been injured have been flown to a hospital in darwin? yes, and we understand that at least one is undergoing surgery and hospital officials are saying they do expect more patients to arrive. what we have seen is this aircraft came down on melville island, as i say, about 60 kilometres to the north of the australian mainland in the northern territory. initially there were a great deal of other army aircraft and military personnel rushing to the scene. some of those injured have been treated on melville island but we do expect more to be transferred to that hospital in darwin. now, all of these troops and military personnel were taking part in broad military exercises involving the us, australia, east timor and also indonesia as well, and we did hear before from the australian prime minister anthony albanese saying that this was a regrettable incident and the australian government is expected to make a further update, or give a further update, on this accident in the next few hours. our reporter in sydney, phil mercer. here in the uk, nadine dorries, the conservative mp and former minister, has resigned as a member of parliament with a scathing attack on the prime minister, rishi sunak. ms dorries had said she would resign injune after claiming that downing street had blocked her receiving a peerage, something which number 10 denied. but she had remained as an mp, saying she was continuing to work for her constituents despite coming under pressure from other mps to go through with her promise to leave the house of commons. she has also released a resignation statement saying that rishi sunak has demeaned his office by whipping up a public frenzy against her. and she also accuses mr sunak of running a zombie parliament with a government which is adrift. she also claims he has squandered the good will of the nation. our political correspondent helen catt told me that the resignation letter attacking the prime minister didn't come as much of a shock. it is unsurprising in a sense, in that we knew these are the views that nadine dorries held. she was a very, very close ally of the former prime minister borisjohnson, and her reason for not standing down until now has been that she wanted to find out more about why she hadn't got a peerage that she had been perhaps promised by borisjohnson, and it has been pretty clear over the summer that she laid the blame for that at rishi sunak*s door. i think what's surprising about her letter, though, is quite how personal it is and how she also accuses him of having been behind whipping up what she sees as a frenzy against her over the summer. so it's quite strong language. how representative is she of parts of the conservative party? how much of a problem is this for the prime minister? well, it's always a problem when you've got a formerly senior member of your party attacking you in public. it looks like you have a divided party. and certainly that's something the leader of the liberal democrats this morning has been seizing on in his broadcast interviews, he has been talking about it showing division within the party. quite how representative she is of the party as a whole, i think is debatable. as i said, she was very closely tied to borisjohnson, the former prime minister, and those who supported him within the party. so i think to that extent, she reflects some of the anger that came off the back of him stepping down as prime minister, two prime ministers ago now. so there is that, but is it an indication of broader discontent within the party? i think we should be a bit wary of seeing it as that so much. i mean, certainly it seemed before they all broke up for the summer recess that mps had started to be starting to pull behind rishi sunak and that will be increasingly important for the government as it goes into the run—up to the next general election, which we are expecting to happen at some point next year. yes, helen, so her resignation does leave a gap, doesn't it, in terms of representing her constituency? it does. so she has started the process of resigning, so actually, the letter to the prime minister isn't part of the formal process of an mp resigning. that was just the way for nadine dorries to put those views out there. the formal process is that she has written to the chancellor. you can'tjust resign as an mp, you have to, instead there's this sort of arcane mechanism where you have to ask to be appointed to a job that would discount you, and that's known as being the steward of the chiltern hundreds. so she has written to the chancellor and asked for that. the chancellor will need to prove that for her to then formally have resigned. and then after that parliament, there will have to be a writ introduced to parliament which gets parliament to agree to hold a by—election to replace her. parliament isn't due back from its summer recess until a week tomorrow, so it's still a little bit longer, really, before that process of a by—election will kick off. are the timing of it will be within the government's control. usually a writ is moved in parliament within three months of someone*s seat becoming vacant, so we will have to see how quickly or otherwise the government decides it wants to move on this. that was our political correspondent helen catt. zimbabwe's president, emmerson mnangagwa, has been re—elected to serve a second term with just over half of the total vote. the opposition claims there has been widespread vote—rigging, and international observers say the vote has fallen short of democratic standards. well, mr mnangagwa, known as the crocodile, which referes to his ruthless nature, faces many challenges. zimbabwe still faces high inflation, currently running at an annual rate of over 70%, as well as poverty. the electoral commission say his main challenger, nelson chamisa, secured 44% of the vote. our correspondent shingai nyoka is in harare and has more on the election result. those election results were announced. they were announced last night. president emmerson mnangagwa won close to 53% of the votes. his main rival, the citizen coalition for change, opposition leader nelson chamisa, got 44% of the votes. but he immediately rejected those results. they said that they... ..that the results were hastily put together, that they weren't validated by them. and so yesterday, when everybody was waiting for the election results, the opposition party had said it wouldn't validate those elections and now we're just waiting now to hear what their step is. the options are very difficult for the opposition. they might go to the courts. they have seven days within which to lodge an appeal at the constitutional court. but this echoes what happened in 2018, with the same two candidates, mr mnangagwa and mr chamisa, who entered the court to try to overturn the results and the constitutional court upheld mr mnangagwa's victory. and so they really don't have confidence in the court system but they said they're going to announce their next step very soon. that was shingai nyoka in harare for us. hopewell chin'ono is an award winning journalist and documentary film—maker in harare. he says the zimbabwe election was marred by number voting irregularities. it wasn't a surprise that president mnangagwa's party and his administration would rig the election. it wasn't a surprise that the way they rigged the election was so brazen, because they have done that in the past. you had a situation where in areas which are mainly opposition strongholds, they didn't have election material, that is ballot papers, for over 12 hours, and this was a form of rigging, called voter suppression where voters end up giving up and they go home without voting. you had a situation in rural areas which are stronghold of the ruling zanu—pf, strongholds in the sense they are able to manipulate the electorate there using food hand—outs and fear and intimidation. you had an outfit called faz, f—a—z, which was working with the state security secret service agents to intimidate people. they set out a plan to put desks next to polling stations, they would take down the names of the rural folk who were going in to vote and take their id numbers and tell them, "we will know who you voted for because we have taken down your details." so that was another form of rigging that was taking place. and then you had a situation where prior to the election day itself, the opposition was not allowed to hold all of its rallies. they were denied over 100 times, each time they wanted to have a rally, using a draconian law which says that everyone who wants to congregate or assemble, they have to get permission from the police. so everything was stacked against the opposition in regards to how the election process was run. one of ukraine's most celebrated fighter pilots, and two other airmen, have been killed in a mid—air crash. andrii pilshchikov won fame taking part in close range aerial battles over kyiv during the early phase of russia's invasion, flying under the call—sign "juice." the ukrainian military called the airmen*s deaths "painful and irreparable" losses, and paid tribute to mr pilshchikov as a young officer with "mega knowledge and mega talent". the crash involved two l—39 training planes flying over northern ukraine. president volodymyr zelensky led tributes to the crash victims. in an address he praised them as defenders of "ukraine's free sky" and vowing an investigation into what happened. the ukrainian president also acknowledged how much andrii pilshchikov had done for the country — and he said, "ukraine will never forget everyone who defended the free sky of ukraine". well, last year andrii pilshchikov spoke to the bbc about the work he and his fellow pilolts were doing — especially the difficulty of shooting down russian cruise missiles — lets listen to some of what he said. your mission is to save lives, he's been cheated out of becoming the world champion. before he was eventually stopped by ukraine's oleksander usyk in the ninth round of their title fight in poland, dubois had floored the champion himself. but it was called a low blow and therefore didn't count. ade adedoyin watched usyk retain his three belts in vrotswav. this was a huge occasion for ukrainians corner an opportunity to see a national hero so close to home. credit to daniel dubois who wasn't overawed by the occasion, but it was usyk who took control early in the fight and seem to be cruising towards a comfortable victory. then came the moment of controversy in the first round. usyk was down, and the first round. usyk was down, and the referee ruled it a low blow and gave him plenty of time to recover. when he did get up, he looked visibly upset and there was a change in tempo of the fight. he applied a lot of pressure to daniel dubois who eventually made down on the eighth round. he made the count but went down again in the night, and this time the referee waved it off. usyk delivered the fight the crowd came to see, but daniel dubois felt he was robbed of what should have been a certain victory in the fifth with a third win from three later at sheffield united, while the game of the day involves two teams who'll hope to push city this time around — newcastle and liverpool. super development under eddie howe, i have to say. smart business. you don't want to miss anybody, but really good business. super intense style, massive atmosphere there. so this is a tough one. aside from manchester city, there are three other defending champions in europe who play later on sunday. harry kane will make his home bundesliga debut for bayern munich against augsburg. serie a winners napoli play sassuolo. while in spain, barcelona take on villarreal, having already dropped points in their opening two matches of the new season. their manager, xavi, added his voice to those criticising the spanish federation president luis rubiales for his behavoiur after the women's world cup final, saying it was unacceptable. the first of the final eight gold medals of the world athletics championships in budapest has gone to uganda's victor kiplangat in the men's marathon. they were off early to avoid the worst of the heat in the hungarian capital and kiplangat surged away in the final few miles to win in two hours, eight minutes and 53 seconds. sunday is the last day of the championships. the formula i world champion max verstappen has put himself in the perfect position to keep the home fans happy at the dutch grand prix. he's on pole again in his red bull, qualifying half a second quicker than mclaren*s lando norris. verstappen is chasing a record—equalling ninth grand prix win in a row. mercedes' george russell will start third. it is never easy, you know, when the track is still drying to get the best out of it, but that lap felt quite decent, and you could just feel it, the adrenaline is going through your body, and of course the fans all expected to put it on pole, but it is never that straightforward, and especially not in qualifying like this. and rory mcilroy*s hopes of back—to—back fedex cup victories look to be over. he trails norwegian leader victor hovland by 11 shots. hovland will take a hefty advantage into sunday's final round of the tour championship. he's six ahead of the field after shooting a four—under—par third round of 66. leaving him 20 under overall. the winner not only the season—ending title, but also $18 million in prize money. it is one of the richest events in golf. and that's all the sport for now. cheers, huw. the head coach of spain's women's football team, jorge vilda, has condemned the behaviour of the country's football federation president after luis rubiales was suspended by fifa for kissing playerjenni hermoso at the world cup final last week. she's accused mr rubiales of kissing her on the lips without consent after spain's victory last sunday. the federation has threatened her with legal action saying she was "misrepresenting reality". mr rubiales has faced a wave of condemnation for his actions but has refused to resign. on saturday, 11 members of the national team's coaching staff quit in protest of his behaviour. mr rubiales has been suspended from participation in football by the sport's world governing body, fifa. our correspondent zoe conway reports. luis rubiales is looking increasingly isolated. his kiss ofjenni hermoso has led to his suspension by fifa, and now the team's coach, jorge vilda, has condemned his behaviour, saying in a statement: only on friday, vilda was in the audience applauding as luis rubiales told an emergency meeting of the country's football federation that he would not resign. no voy a dimitir. no voy a dimitir, no voy a dimitir. he continues to insist the kiss was consensual and has vowed to defend himself until the truth prevails. but within the game, pressure is mounting. growing numbers of players and managers are taking the side ofjenni hermoso, who says she did not consent to the kiss. the cadiz team carried a banner onto the pitch saying, "we arejenni". the seville team had written on their t—shirts "#seacabo". it means "it's over". in other words, they want him to go. it's so unfair that one of the highest moments in spanish sport, not only women's sport but spanish sport, the second world cup that we won, has been stolen because of this behaviour. this is unacceptable, and i think this is not spain. the speed with which the sweetness of victory has turned sour is breathtaking. right now spain does not even have a women's team because they're refusing to play. the team's coaches are on strike too, and the spanish government is so fearful the chaos willjeopardise its bid to host the 2030 world cup... ..that the sports minister, victor francos, has told reporters he has contacted fifa to plead that spain's bid must not be affected. in america, players in the national women's soccer league are wearing wristbands saying, "with you, jenni". this dispute is now about so much more than the future of spanish football. it is about the role of women in the global game. zoe conway, bbc news. throughout the past month, we've been reporting from the largest arts festival in the world — the edinburgh festival course of today, some of them could be heavy and potentially sundry in the east, but we are expecting slightly drier and brighter day tomorrow. we are going to see some late summer sunshine around, but there are also going to be some showers, particularly through the course of today. some of them could be heavy, potentially thundery in the east, but we are expecting a slightly drier and brighter day tomorrow as this area of high pressure in the atlantic starts to topple in. but what we've got today, we've got a front approaching here from the west and low pressure sitting out to the east of the uk. so heading through the day, then, we'll see heavy showers cropping up for parts of northern england through the east midlands, down towards the southeast. these could well be heavy, bringing some rumbles of thunder, lightning and some large hail. but things are looking a little bit drier for parts of central southern england into wales. we've got this frontal system bringing more cloud for the southwest of england, northern ireland and western scotland. patchy rain across this zone. but for the east of scotland, some sunshine and temperatures between about 1a to 22 degrees out there today. we could catch a passing shower at reading and at leeds festivals today, but it shouldn't be raining for long i think. and those showers will tend to ease away into the evening hours. and the chance of one or two heavy showers today at the notting hill carnival, too. but if you're heading to notting hill tomorrow, you've got more chance of staying dry with some sunshine around, too. through the evening hours, the showers in the east fade away. this zone of cloud and patchy rain drifts eastwards, but it's tending to peter out overnight. so some clear spells, some mist and fog patches here and there and temperatures down into mid single figures for one or two more rural spots in the north and the west. so that's how we start monday. monday, a bank holiday for many of us, of course, is looking drier and brighter. so some more sunshine, some areas of cloud and a few showers drifting across parts of england, i think through the morning. so an improvement for scotland and for northern ireland compared to recent days. looking ahead then into tuesday and we've got low pressure sweeping across the uk, higher pressure tries to move in from the atlantic so that's squeezing away the heaviest of the showers. but we'll see this line of cloud and a few spells of light rain crossing parts of england and wales and then more heavy, blustery showers across the north west of scotland. but certainly some sunshine in between these areas of any showers and temperatures 15 to 22 degrees. it looks like many of us should see a drier day on wednesday, but then the weather looks unsettled for the remainder of the week. a bit up and down, sunshine, heavy showers, temperatures typical for the time of year. bye bye. this is bbc news. the headlines: us officials say three us
