five days ago, spain's women's football team were the toast of the world, after beating england to win the world cup. but the celebrations since then have been somewhat overshadowed by the behaviour of luis rubiales, the head of spain's football federation. this image of him kissing the captain jenni hermoso on the lips during the presentation has gone viral. he was also seen grabbing his crotch as he celebrated at the final whistle. it was widely reported that he would resign at an emergency meeting called by the spanish fa but he has refused to go, claiming he is the victim of a social assassination. the spanish government has now started legal action to have him suspended. and dozens of players say they won't play any matches until he's removed. guy hedgecoe is following the story in madrid 7 and his report contains some footage you may find offensive. when the spanish team lifted the world cup last sunday, it was a historic moment. but the way in which the national football much this episode may have damaged spain's image as a modern sports superpower. big development on this story in the last few minutes, because we've had the first formal statement from jenni mo so, i've retweeted it if you want to read it in full, but i'm going to pull out the most impertinent bits of it, concerning what happened today, i don't want to interfere with the legal process but i feel obliged to condemned the words of ruby alice become a part of the manipulative conch or wood which he has generated, i'm certain that at no moment did the conversation mr ruby alice refers to happen, much less that the kiss was consensual. i felt vulnerable and victim of an impulsive, driven, sexist out of place to act without any consent on my part. simply put, i was not respected. joining me to discuss this further is football reporter alex ibaceta. alex, what do you make of this? it's all as expected, statement released earlier from the players, all as expected, statement released earlierfrom the players, stated very similar wording of it, speaking for herself is a bit stronger, and the fact that she is, everything that has been set on her behalf is false. the federation... quotes from her, i think this is the strongest communication, she does mention the words, while she is the one expressing the words, these are the words of every football player who has given her necessarily withdraw but she didn't necessarily withdraw but she didn't come forward with any clarification on it. this makes it abundantly clear that in her view she is the victim of an assault. yeah, look, it's a complicated thing. the federation does have a lot of grip over the players and what was needed at the end of the day i thought she had every right to settle down for a few days. one, to celebrate the greatest acute achievement of her career, sit down and reflect and know that she will was going to do this, she had every right to wait a few days. there was no reason she should had been pressured to speak up, it's her words at the end of the day, and she should have done that on her own time. it's come to fruits that she waited, because now she was able to do it not alone, not pressured and after essentially everything has unfolded, what ruby alice has said today, so i think she had every right to wait a few days.- today, so i think she had every right to wait a few that us rates may have to rise further to rein in inflation. the benchmark interest rate is currently at 5.25%, the highest in 22 years, after 11 consecutive rate hikes since early 2022. us inflation was 3.2% in the year tojuly. while that's lower than in many western countries, it's still above the fed's 2% target. let's have a listen to what fed chairjerome powell had to say at a gathering of central bankers atjackson hole. it is the fed's job to bring inflation down to our 2% goal and we will do so. we have taken policy significantly over the past year, although inflation has moved down from its peak, a welcome development, it remains too high. we are prepared to raise rates further if appropriate, and intend to hold policy at a restrictive level until we are confident that inflation is moving sustainably down toward our objective. we can cross live to new york to speak to bloomberg anchor and markets correspondent kriti gupta. to mike to come good to see you. it seems counterintuitive that the continued strength of the us economy is a reason to put interest rates up even further. is a reason to put interest rates up even further-— is a reason to put interest rates further. why is that the case? while the ripple effects are cruciall while the ripple effects are crucial here because even if you do see strength in the us economy and this really applies to any economy in the world, sometimes growing too fast can be a problem because it means prices are going to grow too fast as well. when wages don't, it means eggs are going to get more expensive not less expensive. we are already seeing examples of that for example in the housing market, the rental market, urban cities, even food inflation for some parts of the country is making grocery bills really, really hard to afford even though we are still only saying a 3% year—over—year increase from a year ago when it comes to inflation which as you pointed out, is one of the lowest in the world. it's still not lowest in the world. it's still not low enough for a lot of consumers in america. ~ , ., * america. well, you're right, the inflation curve _ america. well, you're right, the inflation powell's comments atjackson hole, sure we are not gone, things are looking good right now but we need to make sure they keep looking good, if you look at some of the data there are pieces of the economy, oil prices for example, gasoline prices, that are starting to take higher not by a massive margin butjust enough to have a few folks worried about it in washington, dc. the problem is in congress, they are worried that the federal reserve is going to go too far and essentially move the entire country in a recession. as you know we have a presidential election next week —— i mean next expensive especially when you had stimulus checks the year prior and things actually got very very cheap. the fact that you could spend yours stimulus check on paying down student debt, your mortgages, your car payment, or evenjust student debt, your mortgages, your car payment, or even just have a little extra spending money and then go in extreme reverse for the following two years, i that the federal reserve has historically been known as banker to the rest of the world, the federal reserve slows down and perhaps the bank of england and the ecb will as well. that's not going to be the case this time, i think the bank of england is such a great example because as you pointed out the inflation story is much worse in england and in the rest of the uk, as it is compared to the us or even the rest of the continental europe, that's going to be an issue when it comes to whether or not the bank of england, andrew bailey at the helm of it can really follow the lead that jay powell add more evidence to the idea that brain and bowel health are intimately linked. and researchers say understanding why gut issues happen might allow earlier treatment of parkinson's. joining me is that one thing causes another, but what this study which is published in thejournal... take patients who had a diagnosis of parkinson's disease, people who didn't have parkinson's disease and patients that had other medical problems, and compare the six years building up to that diagnosis of parkinson's disease and look at symptoms that seem to be more common. what they found was symptoms of stomach problems and gastrointestinal issues that you highlighted, and those were much more common in the patients that went on to get parkinson's disease than they were within people who didn't. we don't know whether the... affecting the nervous system and other signals in the intestines and other signals in the intestines and causing the symptoms, or whether it's the other way around and something changes in the intestines and that in turn sets in train the process that will ultimately cause parkinson's disease in those patients. but it certainly an intriguing result and it chimes with other bits of research which have found similar results previously. just to be clear, are we then suggesting that there is a possibility that people with gut problems are at greater risk of developing parkinson's7 tt problems are at greater risk of developing parkinson's?- problems are at greater risk of developing parkinson's? if you take the hypothesis _ developing parkinson's? if you take the hypothesis that _ developing parkinson's? if you take the hypothesis that some _ developing parkinson's? if you take the hypothesis that some scientists have advanced that something changes in the gastrointestinal system, this because it's richly connected to and with the nerves to the brain stem, could be the origin of the process that causes parkinson's disease, perhaps it some scientists have dubbed it a gateway into the parts of the brain affected by parkinson's disease. if the disease starts in the gut, it may manifest as the symptoms first and then transmit higher into the nervous system and manifest as parkinson's disease there. or on the other hand, perhaps there. or on the other hand, perhaps the nervous system is affected, it causes the process is going to ultimately cause the symptoms of parkinson's disease, but secondarily also causes the symptoms of parkinson's disease, but secondarily also causes these gut problems. and those are seen first, the parkinson's comes later. at the moment we are not sure and there's evidence to support both ideas. while that intrigues me, because i have spoken before on the programme about my mum *s diagnosis, she had an empty and we had to go to the hospital to sort out her stomach problems before it was ever diagnosed. so is itjust so late confined to parkinson's7 the confined to parkinson's? the research and there are associations between other neurodegenerative diseases and problems in the gut, but again we don't know if our these associations the processes that are leading to those designers jumped diseases are also affecting the nervous system in the gut, and that in turn changes the spectrum of microorganisms in the gut, and that affects things, or is something fundamentally different in the intestine from the beginning and that makes you more vulnerable to these other conditions becoming manifest. at the moment we don't know. one intriguing finding published in this study, it's not clinically significant as insta statistically, we can't say absolutely rock solid. but there was an intriguing observation that people who had had their appendix removed were about half as likely to develop parkinson's disease as people who hadn't. suggesting that perhaps the appendix is an incubator for the microorganisms are perhaps proteins or substances made by those microorganisms that might the cdc said to today that it does respond to tests and anti—virals, so no need to panic. thank you so much chris for being with us, we'll take a quick break, we'll be hello there. it's been a pretty decent day today across the south—east quadrant of england. plenty of sunshine around. elsewhere, we've seen lots of showers, and some of them have been torrential, with some thunder and lightning mixed in. that's how it's going to remain into the weekend for most of us — sunny spells, scattered showers — because of low pressure nearby. now, the winds will be stronger across northern and western areas for the next couple of days. lighter winds, though, further east. as you can see, fewer isobars there. so the showers which we've had through the day will tend to fade away across many areas, but they'll still continue across northern scotland, parts of northern england, northern ireland and around irish sea coasts. but other areas will remain dry. but a cooler night to come, i think, certainly under clearer skies, temperatures of 7—11 degrees. into the start of our weekend, and we start off with quite a bit of sunshine around. rain, though, showers from the word go across the northern half of scotland. showers will develop widely across england and wales and northern ireland through saturday afternoon, and some of them will be heavy and thundery. lighter winds further east, a bit fresher further west. top temperatures, 21—22 degrees. mid—to—high teens further north, so it will feel cool, particularly when the showers come along. as we head through saturday night, most of the showers fade away. certainly the heavy ones will. but we'll continue to see thicker cloud, some patchy rain across northern and western areas. and, again, a fairly fresh night to come. i think out of town, temperatures in single figures for many, but just about double figures in towns and cities. and then as we head into sunday, we've got this weather front pushing into western areas. that's going to bring an area of more substantial, patchy rain and cloud to northern ireland initially, then to western scotland, but it's a weakening feature, very quickly weakening, so it will be no more than a band of cloud as it crosses the irish sea. but elsewhere on sunday, sunshine and showers once again. top temperatures, 21 degrees, mid—to—high teens further north. that weather front, then, literally fades away as it spreads across britain on monday. remember, monday is a bank holiday for many of us. so once we lose that weather front, that band of cloud, we could actually see quite a bit of sunshine around for england and wales. a bit more cloud for scotland, northern ireland. but even here, there'll be some sunnier moments. temperatures maybe a little bit higher on monday, 21—22 degrees here, high teens further north. but with low pressure always fairly close by as we move through the rest of the new week, it will stay generally unsettled. sunshine and showers and feeling a little bit fresher than of late. hello, i'm christian fraser, and this is the context. it is an amazing image, and i think it's going to go down in history as one of the most famous
