we have an update on a newsnight invesigation after six former metropolitcan police officers are charged after sending racsit messages on whatsapp. and.... you will not make a laughing stock of my family, or as quick as boiled asparagus, i'll have you out! out! i, claudius meets i—player as the bbc starts repeating this classic series. but will its sex and lies on videotape satisfy a modern audience? one of its stars, brian blessed, is here to celebrate it. and we won't be letting brian go without him giving a roaring endorsement of the lionesses before their semi—final match against australia tomorrow. stay tuned. good evening. newsnight can reveal that payments made to the daughter of captain tom, the late sir thomas moore, a hero in the pandemic who raised more than £40 million for charity, are being investigated by the captain tom foundation. it relates to hannah ingram—moore's time when she was interim ceo of the foundation in 2021—2022, when her family's company maytrix group was paid thousands of pounds in return for her appearances as judge of the "virgin media 02, captain tom foundation connector awards." newsnight understands that ms ingram—moore did not formally notify or seek appropriate approvals from the board of trustees prior to entering the commerical arrangement. this is not the first time since her father's death that ms ingram—moore has been embroiled in controversy, and the charities commision is already investigating potential conflicts of interest. here'sjoe. he was the international fundraising hero who provided hope at the height of the pandemic. captain tom moore raised more than £32 million for the nhs. # happy birthday, captain tom, daddy, grandpa...#. he turned 100 during lockdown, was knighted for his efforts, and by his side throughout, his daughter, hannah ingram moore. you can't start halfway. you start at the beginning. but she is now facing serious questions after bbc newsnight uncovered evidence that a family company received money for her appearances in connection with the charity. i'm delighted to be here at ashton vale club for young people to give them the third virgin media 02 captain tom foundation connector award. in 2021 and 2022, hannah ingram—moore helped judge a scheme to reward community projects. the name of the awards included the name of the charity, the captain tom foundation. the charity's logo appeared on the plaques. the legacy that my father has left not only this country but the world... hannah ingram—moore gave every appearance that she was representing the charity. at the time, she was its interim chief executive on a salary of £85,000. and a gold blue peter badge. and yet her significant appearance fee was paid not to the captain tom foundation, but to maytrix group, a company owned by hannah ingram— moore and her husband colin. bbc newsnight understands mrs ingram—moore has been under investigation by her late father's own charity for nine months, as she did not seek the board's approval before entering into that commercial arrangement with virgin media 02. a spokesperson for the trustees said, "this matter is subject of an ongoing internal investigation. the charity commission has been notified of the foundation's review of this matter, and the foundation will share its findings once the investigation has concluded." some with experience of small charities are concerned how this could affect them. i think it potentially has a huge impact for small charities because we're at a time where so many people are facing so many pressures on their finances, that choosing to give to a charity is a choice that can be hard for a lot of people at the moment. and if they don't do that because they don't have trust in where their money might end up, i think it's going to cause huge problems for those small charities who are the lifeblood of communities right across the country. virgin media 02 have confirmed the payment, but not the amount, they said in a statement, "when payment was made, we were not aware of any concerns about maytrix or the captain tom foundation that have since come to light after our campaign and relationship with captain tom finished." we asked hannah ingram—moore to respond to these allegations. she emailed, "you are awful. it's a total lie." six minutes later, she added, "apologies, that reply was for a scammer who has been creating havoc." she has not answered any of our questions about the thousands of pounds her company received. meanwhile, the charity commission has been investigating potential conflicts of interest between the captain tom foundation and the ingram—moores* companies for more than a year. hannah ingram—moore is no longer running the charity, but her husband colin is one of its three trustees and the charity commission has been investigating for more than a year whether those trustees have adequately managed conflicts of interest, including with private companies connected to the ingram—moore family. meanwhile, hannah and colin ingram—moore own consultancy company maytrix, which received the payment from virgin media 02. they also own club nook, the company which controversially registered the trademarks to captain tom, something the charity commission is also investigating. separately, the couple are fighting a demolition order after building an unauthorized home spa complex at their bedfordshire home. their initial plans had been for a captain tom foundation building, but the independent trustees have since said they had no knowledge of the charity's name being used in the planning application. this house was the setting for a remarkable charitable effort which captured the world's imagination. but now it's the focus of a series of questions about whether hannah ingram—moore and her husband benefited from what appeared to be charitable activity. the tens of millions of pounds captain tom raised for the nhs are not part of any investigation, but his legacy could now be tarnished by the actions of his daughter. and joe's here now. do we have any idea of how much money is involved — and how many appearances she made? in terms of the number of appearances i think it is for appearances i think it is for appearances and in terms of the money we just appearances and in terms of the money wejust do appearances and in terms of the money we just do not know at least not yet aside from the fact that it is in the thousands. we should point out that virgin media 02 are a significant companies are probably more than 2000 3000. but they had not told us, virgin media 02, and hannah ingram—moore has not told us and the trustees have not told us yet although they have said that they will publish the results of the investigation into that payment. and the charity commission which has the wider statutory inquiry into concerns about the charity are keeping quiet until the results of that. the ceo of the charity commission has said that this is about trust in small charities at a time when household budgets are small and there is this cost—of—living crisis so it'll be interesting when the report comes out probably in coming months. thank ou. and now sima has an update on another newsnight investigation — this one involving allegations of criminality. today six former metropolitan police officers were charged with sending racist messages on a whatsapp group. this programme uncovered dozens of messages by a member of the group chat last year. the coverage led to the met*s directorate of professional standards launching an investigation. sima, tell us more. last october the us may remember we carried out an investigation into whatsapp group. some of the messages in that chat included strong racial slurs and others referenced government policy of deporting migrants to rwanda. the duke and duchess of sussex appeared in several images alongside racist language. somejoked about several images alongside racist language. some joked about the flooding that hit pakistan last year killing almost 1700 people. following that investigation, today we hadn't six men have been charged women were removed from public spaces. girls high schools stood empty of students with education forbidden for teenage girls aged 11 and above. women were barred from universities. women are now unable to comfortably leave their homes without a male guardian as they could face being questioned by the taliban. they could not use public baths. in recent months, even women's hair salons have been shut down by the taliban. we met two sisters online to hear first—hand how it now feels to be a woman in afghanistan. one of the two had a masters degree but was made to quit herjob and the will meet as bbc four begins a repeat showing of the classic drama series first aired in 1976. ranked highly in polls of the best tv dramas of all time, it was told from the confines of a bbc television studio, adorned with lavish sets and a stellar cast, many of whom had been sitting in make—up since the early hours to make them look older. one of those actors, brian blessed, is here to regale us. first, here's what the fuss was about — with one or two spoilers and lashings of fake blood. this episode entitled reign of terror, deals graphically with a violent and bloody period in a tumultuous reign, and scenes towards the end of the episode, frankly, depict the murderous mayhem of the time. forget succession. i don't like it. you understand ? forget the sopranos. forget dynasty. i, claudius tells the history of the roman empire and is as bloodthirsty and dangerous a setting as has ever been created for the small screen. think the mafia in togas. i could kill you now. this was the bbc“s hugely successful effort to bring to life the novel by robert graves, in 1976, ancient rome visited shepherd's bush as an impressive cast, layered on the latex at the bbc“s television centre. you wouldn't be emperor if it weren't for me. a caesar salad of power, ambition, murder, and sex. told across decades, viewers were gripped by what in many respects was a feuding family soap opera. first of all, an emperor, i can't even rule my own family. let me go. your fat, drunken cow. plots were hatched. i want a catalogue of my daughter in law“s activities. food was poisoned. don“t touch the fig. and backs were stabbed as well as fronts. tiberius claudius. and telling the story in flashback was claudius with his limp and his stammer. i'm better when i'm rehearsed. if that head of yours doesn't stop twitching. i'll have it off! branded a half wit hhe was, in fact, the ultimate survivor, the ultimate politician ducking and diving as his relatives schemed and overlooked him. this is not a comedy theatre. do you want to live a long and useful life? in that case, exaggerate your stutter and your limp. but you are not such a fool. wine has made you bold, isn't it? you said you kept in with caligula because he was to be the next emperor. butf by then you're dead, what difference can it make to you? it took a while to win over the critics, but i, claudius was an instant hit with audiences. the series was enriched by numerous memorable scenes, many laced with dark comedy. married three times already. how many more marriages do you want? that's not my fault. i was widowed twice. how woman can get us a widow twice is beyond me. and it produced this unforgettable moment when brian blessed as augustus meets his end. director herbie wise told blessed he wanted to see rome die on his face and kept the camera on him unblinking for several minutes. i'm finished. tomorrow, bbc4 will put the machinations of ancient rome on screen again. but can it grab a new audience? when compared with modern tv dramas, will it fall like the roman empire? or, like claudius himself, outlive them all? long live the emperor! well, i“mjoined now by augustus himself, the now investigating. while hannah ingram—moore was the salaried interim ceo of the captain tom foundation, her family company was paid to judge awards connected to the foundation itself. also tonight. two years ago the taliban swept to power again in afghanistan after the chaotic withdrawal by the us. we speak to two women who fled the country to ask what can be done to help the women left behind. we have an update on a newsnight invesigation after six former metropolitcan police officers are charged after sending racsit messages on whatsapp. and.... you will not make a laughing stock of my family, or as quick as boiled asparagus, i'll have you out! out! i, claudius meets i—player as the bbc starts repeating this classic series. but will its sex and lies on videotape satisfy a modern audience? one of its stars, brian blessed, is here to celebrate it. and we won't be letting brian go without him giving a roaring endorsement of the lionesses before their semi—final match against australia tomorrow. stay tuned. good evening. newsnight can reveal that payments made to the daughter of captain tom, the late sir thomas moore, a hero in the pandemic who raised more than £40 million for charity, are being investigated by the captain tom foundation. it relates to hannah ingram—moore's time when she was interim ceo of the foundation in 2021—2022, when her family's company maytrix group was paid thousands of pounds in return for her appearances as judge of the "virgin media 02, captain tom foundation connector awards." newsnight understands that ms ingram—moore did not formally notify or seek appropriate approvals from the board of trustees prior to entering the commerical arrangement. this is not the first time since her father's death that ms ingram—moore has been embroiled in controversy, and the charities commision is already investigating potential conflicts of interest. here'sjoe. he was the international fundraising hero who provided hope at the height of the pandemic. captain tom moore raised more than £32 million for the nhs. # happy birthday, captain tom, daddy, grandpa...#. he turned 100 during lockdown, was knighted for his efforts, and by his side throughout, his daughter, hannah ingram moore. you can't start halfway. you start at the beginning. but she is now facing serious questions after bbc newsnight uncovered evidence that a family company received money for her appearances in connection with the charity. i'm delighted to be here at ashton vale club for young people to give them the third virgin media 02 captain tom foundation connector award. in 2021 and 2022, hannah ingram—moore helped judge a scheme to reward community projects. the name of the awards included the name of the charity, the captain tom foundation. the charity's logo appeared on the plaques. the legacy that my father has left not only this country but the world... hannah ingram—moore gave every appearance that she was representing the charity. at the time, she was its interim chief executive on a salary of £85,000. and a gold blue peter badge. and yet her significant appearance fee was paid not to the captain tom foundation, but to maytrix group, a company owned by hannah ingram— moore and her husband colin. bbc newsnight understands mrs ingram—moore has been under investigation by her late father's own charity for nine months, as she did not seek the board's approval before entering into that commercial arrangement with virgin media 02. a spokesperson for the trustees said, "this matter is subject of an ongoing internal investigation. the charity commission has been notified of the foundation's review of this matter, and the foundation will share its findings once the investigation has concluded." some with experience of small charities are concerned how this could affect them. i think it potentially has a huge impact for small charities because we're at a time where so many people are facing so many pressures on their finances, that choosing to give to a charity is a choice that can be hard for a lot of people at the moment. and if they don't do that because they don't have trust in where their money might end up, i think it's going to cause huge problems for those small charities who are the lifeblood of communities right across the country. virgin media 02 have confirmed the payment, but not the amount, they said in a statement, "when payment was made, we were not aware of any concerns about maytrix or the captain tom foundation that have since come to light after our campaign and relationship with captain tom finished." we asked hannah ingram—moore to respond to these allegations. she emailed, "you are awful. it's a total lie." six minutes later, she added, "apologies, that reply was for a scammer who has been creating havoc." she has not answered any of our questions about the thousands of pounds her company received. meanwhile, the charity commission has been investigating potential conflicts of interest between the captain tom foundation and the ingram—moores* companies for more than a year. hannah ingram—moore is no longer running the charity, but her husband colin is one of its three trustees and the charity commission has been investigating for more than a year whether those trustees have adequately managed conflicts of interest, including with private companies connected to the ingram—moore family. meanwhile, hannah and colin ingram—moore own consultancy company maytrix, which received the payment from virgin media 02. they also own club nook, the company which controversially registered the trademarks to captain tom, something the charity commission is also investigating. separately, the couple are fighting a demolition order after building an unauthorized home spa complex at their bedfordshire home. their initial plans had been for a captain tom foundation building, but the independent trustees have since said they had no knowledge of the charity's name being used in the planning application. this house was the setting for a remarkable charitable effort which captured the world's imagination. but now it's the focus of a series of questions about whether hannah ingram—moore and her husband benefited from what appeared to be charitable activity. the tens of millions of pounds captain tom raised for the nhs are not part of any investigation, but his legacy could now be tarnished by the actions of his daughter. and joe's here now. do we have any idea of how much money is involved — and how many appearances she made? in terms of the number of appearances i think it is for appearances i think it is for appearances and in terms of the money we just appearances and in terms of the money wejust do appearances and in terms of the money we just do not know at least not yet aside from the fact that it is in the thousands. we should point out that virgin media 02 are a significant companies are probably more than 2000 3000. but they had not told us, virgin media 02, and hannah ingram—moore has not told us and the trustees have not told us yet although they have said that they will publish the results of the investigation into that payment. and the charity commission which has the wider statutory inquiry into concerns about the charity are keeping quiet until the results of that. the ceo of the charity commission has said that this is about trust in small charities at a time when household budgets are small and there is this cost—of—living crisis so it'll be interesting when the report comes out probably in coming months. thank ou. and now sima has an update on another newsnight investigation — this one involving allegations of criminality. today six former metropolitan police officers were charged with sending racist messages on a whatsapp group. this programme uncovered dozens of messages by a member of the group chat last year. the coverage led to the met*s directorate of professional standards launching an investigation. sima, tell us more. last october the us may remember we carried out an investigation into whatsapp group. some of the messages in that chat included strong racial slurs and others referenced government policy of deporting migrants to rwanda. the duke and duchess of sussex appeared in several images alongside racist language. somejoked about several images alongside racist language. some joked about the flooding that hit pakistan last year killing almost 1700 people. following that investigation, today we hadn't six men have been charged under the communications act of 2003. they re former metropolitan police officers . upon their arrival the taliban moved quickly to sweep away cultural change which happened since the 2001 invasion. women were removed from public spaces. girls high schools stood empty of students with education forbidden for teenage girls aged 11 and above. women were barred from universities. women are now unable to comfortably leave their homes without a male guardian as they could face being questioned by the taliban. they could not use public baths. in recent months, even women's hair salons have will meet as bbc four begins a repeat showing of the classic drama series first aired in 1976. ranked highly in polls of the best tv dramas of all time, it was told from the confines of a bbc television studio, adorned with lavish sets and a stellar cast, many of whom had been sitting in make—up since the early hours to make them look older. one of those actors, brian blessed, is here to regale us. first, here's what the fuss was about — with one or two spoilers and lashings of fake blood. this episode entitled reign of terror, deals graphically with a violent and bloody period in a tumultuous reign, and scenes towards the end of the episode, frankly, depict the murderous mayhem of the time. forget succession. i don't like it. you understand ? forget the sopranos. forget dynasty. i, claudius tells the history of the roman empire and is as bloodthirsty and dangerous a setting as has ever been created for the small screen. think the mafia in togas. i could kill you now. this was the bbc“s hugely successful effort to bring to life the novel by robert graves, in 1976, ancient rome visited shepherd's bush as an impressive cast, layered on the latex at the bbc“s television centre. you wouldn't be emperor if it weren't for me. a caesar salad of power, ambition, murder, and sex. told across decades, viewers were gripped by what in many respects was a feuding family soap opera. first of all, an emperor, i can't even rule my own family. let me go. your fat, drunken cow. plots were hatched. i want a catalogue of my daughter in law“s activities. food was poisoned. don“t of yours doesn't stop twitching. i'll have it off! branded a half wit hhe was, in fact, the ultimate survivor, the ultimate politician ducking and diving as his relatives schemed and overlooked him. this is not a comedy theatre. do you want to live a long and useful life? in that case, exaggerate your stutter and your limp. but you are not such a fool. wine has made you bold, isn't it? you said you kept in with caligula because he was to be the next emperor. butf by then you're dead, what difference can it make to you? it took a while to win over the critics, but i, claudius was an instant hit with audiences. the series was enriched by numerous memorable scenes, many laced with dark comedy. married three times already. how many more marriages do you want? that's not my fault. i was widowed twice. how woman can get us a widow twice is beyond me. and it produced this unforgettable moment when brian blessed as augustus meets his end. director herbie wise told blessed he wanted to see rome die on his face and kept the camera on him unblinking for several minutes. i'm finished. tomorrow, bbc4 will put the machinations of ancient rome on screen again. but can it grab a new audience? when compared with modern tv dramas, will it fall like the roman empire? or, like claudius himself, outlive them all? long live the emperor! well, i“mjoined now by augustus himself, the
