and the way that they played was not up to the united level. i think a lot of attention will turn to names like zinedine zidane, brendan rodgers as we have heard. we had in his press conference that he was not interested in the job. conference that he was not interested in thejob. but conference that he was not interested in the job. but you see with the attraction that a club like manchester united can pull from certain managers, whether they will be tempted in that respect. zinedine zidane the former real madrid manager was very successful there, three—time champions league winner at real madrid, his name has been touted as a potential united manager. the ajax manager who has been doing great work in the dutch league and the champions league too. so many names are being thrown into the hat for the manchester united job. it is a hugejob for the hat for the manchester united job. it is a huge job for whoever comes in and takes over, it needs to be someone of huge stature and pedigree, some who a lot of the fans will want, a big name to bring them back to the level they are used to seeing. back to the level they are used to seeina. , ., ., , ., seeing. they have now been a been a long time since they have had that era and that sort of success. jose mourinho won a couple of trophies, the league cup and europa league. but when ferguson first left, david moyes took over and that did not end very well for him there. but he is doing well at west ham, they are flying high. but united have not had replacement of sir alex ferguson's ilk since he left, effectively. jose mourinho was the one who was supposed to bring the glory days back. solskjaer coming in now and the balance when he was first brought in 2018, the bounce that he took over with and how they progressed under him, the fans really were hoping the glory days could come under solskjaer. unfortunately for them, he was found out tactically, found out a little bit in terms of where his tactical acumen may be lacked in comparison to other managers of previous years that they had had. and to the way the season is going at the moment with so many teams who are pushing and firing on all cylinders, manchester city and liverpooljust manchester city and liverpool just to manchester city and liverpooljust to name two, manchester united have been found wanting and that defeats to liverpool recently shows that manchester united were not at the races under solskjaer. it is time for a change and they have taken the initiative and made the call effectively after these results. a lot of fans may have thought it would happen sooner, but today we are hearing in the news that he has been sacked and i think now the attention will turn to who is his replacement. attention will turn to who is his repiacement-— attention will turn to who is his relacement. ., ~ , ., , . replacement. thank you very much, gavin. replacement. thank you very much, gavin- during _ replacement. thank you very much, interestin: this development? there are a few interesting facts _ this development? there are a few interesting facts that _ this development? there are a few interesting facts that are _ this development? there are a few interesting facts that are emerging j interesting facts that are emerging festival first of all, mike phelan, who has been solskjaer's assistant manager and also kiran mckenna, who like michael carrick, has been a first—team coach, they are staying on at the moment to help carrick prepare the team for tuesday's champions league game against villa real and presumably the premier league game at chelsea next weekend. it also says in the club club are looking for someone to take over on an interim basis until the end of the season. that makes it appear that they may be looking at someone who is currently in a job, they may find it difficult to get out both the job. find it difficult to get out both thejob. to get find it difficult to get out both the job. to get them find it difficult to get out both thejob. to get them out find it difficult to get out both the job. to get them out of their position. that would raise the possibility of someone like moritz yeo or tino —— ratio pochettino at p56 yeo or tino —— ratio pochettino at psg or the ajax manager, they are probably not available now. i think, as gavin was saying, the decision was virtually automatic. manchester united have sustained heavy defeats over the last, well, ten weeks really. and really the position after yesterday was untenable. it is interesting that in the statement, he says that solskjaer will always be a legend at manchester united and it is with regret that the club have had to take this decision. it really was not a decision that the envisaged having to make ten weeks ago, but it is something that has been forced on them. find ago, but it is something that has been forced on them.— been forced on them. and it is a reminder of— been forced on them. and it is a reminder of how _ been forced on them. and it is a reminder of how brutal - been forced on them. and it is a reminder of how brutal that - been forced on them. and it is a l reminder of how brutal that game been forced on them. and it is a - reminder of how brutal that game is, when the results are not being delivered, how quickly a manager's fortunes can turn around. in terms of the blame being laid at his door though, how fair is that? what has happened in these last ten weeks? what has happened in the last ten weeks is that a squad that has been put together at huge cost, that brought in one of the greatest player that has ever played in cristiano ronaldo, paid £75 million for an england internationaljadon sancho and another £50 million for a world cup winner with france's raphael varane, they have been put into an already expensive squad and they have catastrophically underperformed. there are question marks to be answered with individual players who are playing nothing like they are capable of, but, ultimately, at any football club, managers arejudged on results ultimately, at any football club, managers are judged on results and results have not been good enough. as i say, i think the surprise is the speed with which this has happened. because by the middle of september, nobody could have foreseen this. manchester united were at the top of the table, but as you say, it is a brutal, brutal business, that is why solskjaer has gone. it business, that is why solsk'aer has one. ., , ., , , business, that is why solsk'aer has one. ., _ , gone. it will obviously be important _ gone. it will obviously be important to work out exactly why it is - gone. it will obviously be important to work out exactly why it is that i to work out exactly why it is that those individual players are not playing as well as they are capable of playing. and therefore what the particular skills of the new manager will need to bring in to make this team gel. have been suggestions about what it is? what was going on and why they were not playing at the level they should? it and why they were not playing at the level they should?— level they should? it felt, if you thins level they should? it felt, if you things actually. _ level they should? it felt, if you things actually. it _ level they should? it felt, if you things actually. it felt _ level they should? it felt, if you things actually. it felt that - level they should? it felt, if you things actually. it felt that they | things actually. it felt that they were not adhering to any that solskjaer was laying out. also looked as though the players are shorn of confidence, any time they would try and do something, they are concerned about the ramifications of making a mistake. which is fatal the any professional sports person. in addition, some of the players clearly are not good enough, they are not worth the amount of money manchester united have paid for them. there are three strands to that, those strands will not be easy to sort out. i guess the idea is that whoever comes in, well, initially carrick, or the person who comes into the end of the season will be able to motivate and be able to coach, because the criticism has been that the team have been devoid of a coherent coaching strategy in the way that i must say chelsea under thomas to show or manchester city under pep guardiola or liverpool and jurgen klopp have. that seems to be lacking in manchester united and beyond that, it will be about recruitment and getting the right players for the right positions. at the moment, it is about trying to get over some short—term hurdles, they are tuesday's game against the real and the next week's game against chelsea. ., . . ., _, the next week's game against chelsea. ., . . ., , chelsea. how much change could be in the team under— chelsea. how much change could be in the team under a _ chelsea. how much change could be in the team under a new _ chelsea. how much change could be in the team under a new manager? - chelsea. how much change could be in the team under a new manager? it - the team under a new manager? it will be interesting, yesterday, donny van de beek, a dutch international who has been completely overlooked virtually by solskjaer, he came into the team at half—time with the side desperate to try and turn the game around. he scored and had a good game. he will be hopeful of a game. maybejesse lingard, who has turned down contract talks, contract talks have collapsed between lingard and the club because he does not see a future at old trafford. maybe he will get a game, maybe someone like dean henderson will get a game. even though david de gea has been one of the best players at manchester united this season. there are a number of players who have been on the outside looking in who don't feel as though they were going to get the chance to play under solskjaer. there has been one of the criticisms. maybe those players will be looked at afresh now. but the fact that michael carrick and the other members of the coaching staff are in charge suggests it might not be too much different in the short term. someone coming in until the end of the season certainly will look to do that.— end of the season certainly will look to do that. * , ., ., look to do that. and you mentioned our look to do that. and you mentioned your thought _ look to do that. and you mentioned your thought that _ look to do that. and you mentioned your thought that they _ look to do that. and you mentioned your thought that they will - look to do that. and you mentioned your thought that they will be - your thought that they will be likely to be looking at a big name who is not currently available because they are looking for an interim managerfirst up. who because they are looking for an interim manager first up. who would be, you mentioned three names, who would be the obvious prize pick for the club, for the fans? i would be the obvious prize pick for the club, for the fans?— the club, for the fans? i think the obvious one. _ the club, for the fans? i think the obvious one, who _ the club, for the fans? i think the obvious one, who has _ the club, for the fans? i think the obvious one, who has been - the club, for the fans? i think the | obvious one, who has been linked with manchester united many times is pochettino. he has done such a fantasticjob pochettino. he has done such a fantastic job at southampton, pochettino. he has done such a fantasticjob at southampton, and largely did a brilliantjob at tottenham, taking them to the champions league final. he has also been viewed as a potential manchester united manager. the fact is that manchester united did have the opportunity to appoint pochettino when he left tottenham but instead opted to give ole gunnar solskjaer an extended run as manager. i understand that pochettino would quite be open to moving to manchester united, but he is under contract at paris saint—germain at the moment. we will have to see how that works out will stop erik ten hag at ajax is another interesting one because ajax have been very much at the forefront of an improvement in their fortunes over the last few years. and brendan rodgers we know all about, he did a fantasticjob at both celtic and leicester, amazingly until this season when his side have not performed very well either, apart from against manchester united. which was a game that they won. the interesting thing at the moment will be who comes in as an interim, one name that has been floated towards me is the former manchester united defender who was formerly in charge of psg and the french national squad. i wonder if someone like him could come in and help the club in the short term. you are looking at someone like that. a manager in moscow who made his name as a technical director more than a manager, he is someone else who may come in until the end of the season. clearly someone has got to sort the mess of manchester united out, because with four wins in 13 games, the defeats have been suffering, they have been no any other prizes that they want to win at the end of the season. unless something changes very, very quickly. the season. unless something changes very. very quickly-— very, very quickly. thank you very much, very, very quickly. thank you very much. simon- _ the mystery surrounding the whereabouts of the missing chinese tennis star peng shuai has taken another twist. a new video has been posted online which appears to show the 35—year—old at a youth tennis tournament in beijing. the women's tennis association says the footage, released on sunday by state media, is insufficient and does not address their concerns over her safety. the former doubles world number one had not been seen or heard from publicly since she posted online accusing the former vice—premier zhang gaoli of coercing her into sex. the video was shared on social media site twitter by a reporter from the global times in china. peng is seen signing oversized tennis balls for children at the at the fila kidsjunior tennis challenger finals, a tournment organised by china open. but the authenticity of these images has not been independently verified. james reynolds has the latest. this unverified video was posted by the editor of a state—run newspaper. the footage claims to show peng shuai, in the white top, having dinner last night at a beijing restaurant with her coach and friends. the tennis player is shown listening, but not speaking. the video raises many questions. the clip starts with someone off screen saying "now is the perfect time, ok, now is perfect." then, there's a two—second pause, and then the coach goes into this remark in which he hammers home that it is november 21st. so it seems incredibly scripted, and even they didn't cut out the director's cue at the very beginning of the video. so the whole thing is incredibly bizarre, but creepy and sinister. the same editor then posted this video, purporting to show peng shuai, who's second on the left, being introduced this morning at a youth tennis tournament in china's capital. the state media also released these unverified and undated stills on friday, but this rapid accumulation of state—provided material does not convince the increasing numbers who are calling for independent proof. in a statement released last night, the foreign office said: peng shuai, a winner of two grand slam doubles tournaments, including wimbledon, is well—known on the tennis circuit. the women's tennis association has threatened to cancel its many events in china unless it can assure itself of her well—being. james reynolds, bbc news. our china correspondent, john sudworth, is following developments from taipei. we have hurt in the women's tennis association already saying that they do not believe that the appearance of this eventin believe that the appearance of this event in beijing this morning answers their concerns at all. of course in the real issue here is that even if this video, unlike the other material so far released by chinese state media, even if this one has the appearance of authenticity, even though photos of peng shuai appeared on the official media account of the tournament organisers this morning, it does indeed suggest she was there in person, looking relatively pleased to be there, smiling and waving at the crowd. it is proof of her whereabouts for the first time in one month, but it is not proof of her freedom. one month, but it is not proof of herfreedom. if does not one month, but it is not proof of her freedom. if does not tell us that she is not there under duress, if does not tell us that she is able to be where she wants to be and say what she wants to say. that question of independent proof of her freedom is still an answer, that is why i think we have the women's tennis association saying it is not satisfied. the province of china is given this allegation, they are in a bind that the more they try to deliver evidence that makes everything look normal, the more questions there are. the uk health secretary sajid javid has said some people may have died as a result of potential racial bias in the design and use of some medical devices. the government has launched a review into the issue following research suggesting that, during the pandemic, patients from some ethnic minorities have been at greater risk of receiving inaccurate results from oximeters, which measure oxygen in the blood. ministers want to know whether this also prevented people from being given the most appropriate treatment for covid—19. i think possibly yes. i don't have the full facts, and these oximeters are being used in every country and they have the same problem. the reason is that a lot of these medical devices, some of the drugs and procedures and textbooks most of them are put together in a majority white countries. and i think this is a systemic issue around this. some
